Thanks for the belated well wishes! I just wanted to get through the day, then I could feel safe in admitting to being in my thirties! Yes, I admitted it to my wife! For the past two years my statement has been "I'm celebrating the first anniversary of my 29th birhtday!" and so on...
Der John- I like the station! Do I see an RDC at the station? What type RDC is it? Straight passenger, or does it have an RPO and Baggage?
Keith- I am in awe STILL about those rocks!
Todd- I can understand the whole "I overdid it" thing... I also can't seem to figure out at what point you say "WHEN" it's done! During the summer after I graduated high school I decided it was time to repaint my goalie helmet (Roller Hockey). I used Krylon Silver, and gave it a good two coatings. I guess I didn't wait long enough for the first coat to dry (and probably both coates were too heavy) When I finally threw the helmet out two years ago, I could still move the paint around, it NEVER fully cured... If I had just done several extremely light coatings instead of the two heavy ones, maybe, just maybe it would have come out better! DOH!
Ulrich- What do you call those Locos in the top two photo's? NJ Transit has imported a ton of them (55 in all) and called them "ALP-46" and "ALP-46A" I have attempting to find the actual name for them, but not had much luck here... I would love to pick one up for my layout (As I am thinking of making the Transit portion and electrified line) but can't find them here in USA ( I've been able to find them in O scale but not HO... DURN IT)
Oh, and just read the post about the 100MPH speed! We only get up to that on the Northeast Corridor, apparently Transit has a fixation with 80MPH!!! They could run so much better service if they increased the speed just those 20 MPH's!!! Oh well, since when does a company do what would make more fiscal sense anymore? Oops again...
"Johnboy"- They are dropping the class behind us, for what reason I cannot explain for certain, only in speculation. The general consensus here is THAT Transit believes it has more than enough people to run the railroad smoothly, including those still in training, and that the class was expendable. Evidently they have pulled this sort of thing before. They went THREE years before starting another LETP class. The extra-list people loved it because they started making more money... If things go the way the Engineers think it will, a lot of the older guys are going to start retiring, leaving more jobs open, and making the list move quite a bit! THAT would be excellent for me and my classmates as this would mean we would be working more! I continue to pray that the Lord provides for my classmates and I the employment that we currently have! And I am thankful that He has continued that employment for me!

Maybe that is where it needs to go? Dunno. Think I'll sit with Todd there in the meantime until somebody else comes up with the right answer...

Jerry, good to hear that your S-I-L got himself a job. There's not an abundance around here, either, but then again, I always found it took a lot of looking, putting in applications, calling back, etc. before landing some job. (My ...) Like that ore train, by the way!
Todd, is that limestone rock in your pic, or what? I'm a when it comes to identifying rocks (other than, "That's purdy!"). The hard part in your photo is that you have all the light reflected by the water, which warshes out the color of the rocks (to my eyes, at least), making it look lighter when trying to match it on a drier piece of plaster/Hydrocal/dentrite, etc. Best wishes on getting what you want, and if you don't - it's YOUR railroad, by golly! And it looks like your two gals were having fun (even if it wore you and Grandma out).
DerJohn, I think I mislabeled your photo that I liked - I meant the one at the bottom of your posts (looked reminiscent of Star Trek or something like that). My bad...!

Was thinking about trying to get over your way for the weekend after this next one (when I'm off again).

His GP30 is looking nice. I'm kinda partial to GP35's as they started to build them just exactly {by a month} the time I was born. SO GP35's, including the static Conrail one on display at The RR Museum of PA at Strasburg was built about the time I arrived on this fair planet.

howmus I was surprised How much I already knew. The class ended up with an "open Book" test which we had to pass. I am proud to say, I PASSED!!! Ended up with a 91 (out of 100) on it which was as good as many of the old pros. New book, new test. Some of the questions were a bit vague. One of the True False questions was, "Three short whistle blasts mean the train is about to move. True, False". Well I read that and said, Too easy! So I looked up the actual rules in both the New Rule Book, and the Personal Train Order Manual. It said "If the train is moving 3 shorts mean immediate stop. If the train is not moving it means back up 2 car lengths, or move in reverse direction". So I put False.... Got it wrong. I pointed not that the rulebook says something more complex, and he gave me credit. Everything else I missed, I had been given partial credit for. Anyway I am now certified for several crew positions (All that don't require the brake class - which is going on right now)

Nice phone and it has these things called “APPS”. Well for you DCC guys out there I just downloaded the JMRI Throttle APP for my phone. Yes now my phone is a DCC throttle.

Ulrich, do not breath too deep. That ash will find you. I remember when Mount Saint Helens blew. I was over a thousand miles from it, but drove through the dust with the bus all night that had settled over our area. Guess that was back in the late 70s. My boys the next day when they were running on the lawn had little puffs of ash dust coming up from their shoes, looked like a cartoon and they were going really fast.

Ray - right on! You have found the ash! Btw, those "little" electric trains have a power output of roundabout 8,000 hp and are able to accelerate a regular 8 coach passenger train from 0 to 60 mph in less than 12 seconds. The more powerful version (like the blue one) has up to 12,000 hp. Electric traction requires a lot less hardware.... This family of locos has turned into a bestseller in Europe. Even the Swiss Federal Railway buys them, which led to the demise of the Swiss loco industry. No more Swiss "Crocodile".
Sam may find it interesting that our regular local passenger trains travel at a speed of 100 mph.

Ulrich, you asked for more pics.. sorry.. I only have one... but its where I am now. And darn it~! lol.. I am at the point where I am cutting sidewalks and getting them for painting.. I keep wondering when the fun part is gonna start... NOT~ I'm having fun.. experimenting..trying to give the curb a slight bevel.. and a rounded edge. And also cut .. well score the foam.. and put the lines that sidewalks.. and a curb edge has. If you got all that~, I'm going to paint them gray.. then stain it will either a black craft paint.. or the india ink. Thats it.
I plan on cutting thin cuts into the foam so as to give the cut/lined look of sidewalks.. but have not determined the correct size. Any ideas of how a sidewalk should look. You know .. the 'Score lines' they place in sidewalks so they dont' crack. Well thats where I am. Hmmmmm.
If you look close .. I've got some old concrete rails/walls for the upper street.
We've got some rain coming.. a cold front. Just to remind us.. its only Spring.
On a side note: Milk lovers only. I love to drink milk in the spring time. Ever notice how good milk tastes during the spring.. yeppers.. them cows have been feeding on Spring rain grass... and yummy. I can even taste the milk if the cows were eating clove or hay during the summer or fall. Just some farm boy out of the midwest. .. lol.

Do a bit of grocery shopping, weed the herb garden, cut some more asparagus spears, and... GET TO W*RK ON MY PHOTOGRAPHY CLINIC!!! Uh, sorry for shouting.....

Looks like overall everyone is fine, and I'm glad.
We're still in Michigan. This week the plan is to drive from Detroit area to Grand Rapids with a stop in Lansing. Later, will stop in Benton Harbor and then home via Indiana. Full schedule, but I am finding time to assemble downtown building kits. Also, Shelley's b'day is this week and we are celebrating. We went to Zehnders in Frankenmuth.

Ulrich - hope the teaching job comes through. I think with the underlying heart trubs, a teaching job would be ideal for you. FYI, there are ways of securing screws in particle and flake board but theyare more a pita than a solution.

Good morning all. Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 64. Northeast wind between 5 and 7 mph.
Played around with some plaster scraps last night. I've decided that just a light black wash is almost there so, I'm going to try a grey wash light enough just to take the whiteness out of the rock. Followed of course by a black. Then see how I like that.

Sam- HAPPY late BIRTHDAY!!
Keith- Yes I did use black. I've narrowed the problem down to three possibilities. One, I used a brush instead of a foam brush. Two, It's my luck. You see, when I use a scrap piece of plaster it looks fine, or in this case after seeing the pictures, wrong, but yet.... right.... Anyway, when I use the same colors and method on the actual project. It isn't the same. And three, the one I lean to as the biggest problem because, well, it's what I do, I'm not applying the colors correctly. The dob method is what I use and on a small piece of scrap I'm able to fight the urged to "over dob" a color because well, it's just a piece of scrap and I'm just looking to see if the colors are going to be right. But, when I get to the real project, which is much bigger, I'm prone to say, "I think it needs more" before I see if it does. So I over dob in size and density. SO, what I'm going to do is, attempt to erase the colors and try again, this time as I said above. Like I said, I'll get it. As soon as I let go and trust what those who have done it more times so far than I ever will, I'll get it. Like salt, ‘tis easier to add later, than take away. Now if I can just do that instead of just say it.
Lee- Now that's a great idea. Using shirts as polarity markers! (takes off hat) Brilliant!

"Rust, whats not to love?"
Got an email last night my N-scale decoders’ w/sound is in for those HO-scale GE 44 T critters I bought in January. These decoders are brand new releases (Digitrax) and come with a 1” x 1” speaker. The cabs of the critters have just over 1” x 1” space in the roof so I hope they fit.I had a coupon from Hobby Town, So I bought the WS hobo campsite and laid scenery down last night for that. I also finished the ballast work for the engine facilities. Next phase will be to detail the turntable bridge and add proper handrails to it. I had an issue; how to mark the rail polarity on the bridge. I found a simple solution; one RR worker with a green shirt on one end of the bridge and on the other ends a RR worker with a red shirt. I see in several old movies RR crews had a “spotter” to double check track alignment, so this will be prototypical to some extent. My other option is to spend $35 on an automatic reverser circuit.Todd that is a great picture! Defiantly a keeper. John, great station, I just didn’t want to dedicate that large of a passenger platform on my layout, maybe if I buy a bigger house in the next couple of years….Sam, Happy belated birthday!

Took my car to the garage this morning - my car needs a repair, but it will not be as "dear" as I thought it would be. Still a drain on the budget, which I somehow have to compensate - I hope it will not be delaying my MRR plans. I still have the DIY cheque, which should cover the better part of the cost for the benchwork, now that I have that freebie door as a basis.
Keith - your doing a wonderful job with those rocks - can hardly wait to see them in place! More pictures, please.

TMarsh I've completed my part of the house cleaning, as far as I know at least, it's not over yet. The manly vacuum sweeper (aaaaaall METAL baby. Except for the plastic parts) has been utilized in a manly way. Ug. Keith- I spoke incorrectly, the correct term should be "wash". That's what I do. I say paint and I know it's wrong it just comes out that way. To me, and it's wrong I know and confusing to others, if you change the color of something you are doing one of two things. Painting, or staining. Actually, if I use any incorrect term, I suppose I should use staining. (which to me is not incorrect) Hm. I'll give that a wash . But see, it's not as much how I use it or what I use as much as the colors I use. I don't know what color I'm going for and if I did I wouldn't know what colors to add to make that color or actually coloration. I know I want a cross between greyish east coast to midwestern and western desert. I know it when I see it but without a zillion different suggestions and pictures from people saying "this it?" I'll just have to get iot on my own by experimenting. My Burnt Umber to me combined with the Yellow ochre, where it did, looks pink to me. My eyes (color astigmatism. Hard to explain unless you have it, but yes I do see colors as you do, for the most part.) obviously for some reason really pick out the red. If it's not, then to me it does and that's not what I want. I'll get it soon. Now I have to get some salt water eraser going and see how that clears my canvas. so to speak. Todd, I thought mine sorta looked like that as well ...and/when I read the part highlighted in blue.. the first thing I said.. "Yeah.. Todd, but did you add the Flat Black or Smoke Gray wash?" "I'm coming over tomorrow if ya haven't figured it out." . lol.. I wish~! Some kind of dark charcol other than black black. I would tend to think.. the charcol black wash would tame the pink.. into something you are seeking. At least for not other reason.. to see the dark wash start to blend in the other two. Todd.. I'd also like to remind you .. when I was hitting the panic button.. don't you remember.. ? You said.."Now keith.. take in a deep breath.... now blow it out your..." well I can't remember it all~ it something like that. Even Jeanne would say.. "Todd... just call him Hispanic Panic.. and he'll quiet down! But I really gave it some thought here. I don't recall you stating what type of paints you are using. I also have Craft paints.. and I am wondering if thats what you are using. If so.. I would have a totally different approach to using them. Its a technique I learned from Jeanne and her mom.. in the Plaster Crafts business. Its called .. Staining and Antiquing plaster.. lol. No kidding. Oh its using a wash .. but its more of preserving each wash.. with lets say .. Dullcote. Then if you make a mistake.. you can wash off only the wash .. you are doing. But you still have the last wash you preserved with the Dullcote. Takes time in between drying times of the wash and dullcote. And then again if you are using the WS paints.. / Wash. .. the only thing.. that Jeanne thought was the most important was getting it wet. The colors.. well I don't think thats the problem.. in fact.. picking two with a charcol wash.. might almost get ya there.. we shall talk about it tomorrow. If ya care to.. ~ lol. But in Pirates cove.. well there were many alcoves.. and tunnels.. and you could even go under that big mound through a fairly large tunnel.. far from being a short tunnel. Nowadays, its been barred up with wrought iron.. welded shut. But as a boy, we camped along the coast in many of these places.. fires on the beach. I wanted to show all of you the rock formations I grew up seeing.. as a boy. Funny thing.. I show my neighbor across the street.. the rock formation (Alvalanche City) and my neighbor says.. "You know.. this reminds me of Palos Verdes (along the beach). I replied.. exactly. Ok.. its twelve midnight.. wel in one minute.. I turn into a Toad.. gotta go.
I've completed my part of the house cleaning, as far as I know at least, it's not over yet. The manly vacuum sweeper (aaaaaall METAL baby. Except for the plastic parts) has been utilized in a manly way. Ug.
Keith- I spoke incorrectly, the correct term should be "wash". That's what I do. I say paint and I know it's wrong it just comes out that way. To me, and it's wrong I know and confusing to others, if you change the color of something you are doing one of two things. Painting, or staining. Actually, if I use any incorrect term, I suppose I should use staining. (which to me is not incorrect) Hm. I'll give that a wash . But see, it's not as much how I use it or what I use as much as the colors I use. I don't know what color I'm going for and if I did I wouldn't know what colors to add to make that color or actually coloration. I know I want a cross between greyish east coast to midwestern and western desert. I know it when I see it but without a zillion different suggestions and pictures from people saying "this it?" I'll just have to get iot on my own by experimenting. My Burnt Umber to me combined with the Yellow ochre, where it did, looks pink to me. My eyes (color astigmatism. Hard to explain unless you have it, but yes I do see colors as you do, for the most part.) obviously for some reason really pick out the red. If it's not, then to me it does and that's not what I want. I'll get it soon. Now I have to get some salt water eraser going and see how that clears my canvas. so to speak.
Todd, I thought mine sorta looked like that as well ...and/when I read the part highlighted in blue.. the first thing I said.. "Yeah.. Todd, but did you add the Flat Black or Smoke Gray wash?" "I'm coming over tomorrow if ya haven't figured it out." . lol.. I wish~! Some kind of dark charcol other than black black.
I would tend to think.. the charcol black wash would tame the pink.. into something you are seeking. At least for not other reason.. to see the dark wash start to blend in the other two.
Todd.. I'd also like to remind you .. when I was hitting the panic button.. don't you remember.. ? You said.."Now keith.. take in a deep breath.... now blow it out your..." well I can't remember it all~ it something like that.

Thank you for the supportive prayers! I'm hoping all the people in the class behind me find jobs quickly... I know that SEPTA and AMTRAK are both hiring. I can't believe that they only got 12 hours notice that they were out of a job! NJ Transit REQUIRES that you give your previous employer two weeks notice when you are hired into the company. They also require two weeks notice that you are quiting... Why couldn't they give the same DARN respectful treatment to those guys??? Company's have no sense of LOYALTY anymore when it comes to personnel, use you and THROW you away when they don't need you anylonger... Oops snuck up on me again!
My birthday went well! Went to church, hung out with my beautiful wife and watched a couple movies, went to Olive Garden with the wife, her folks, her uncle, and family friend! Watched a few more movies!
I wasn't looking forward to this b-day, hence why I didn't want to talk about it until it was over... Glad to have been blessed to be on this earth for the past 32 years... Hope to see another 32 at least!

Good Evening All,
Spent much of the day resting between chores. My cold is diminishing in severity so I should be back in the shop tomorrow. We also finally got the take out radiators, furnace and water heater loaded on the pick up to take to the scrap yard. Neighbors were real patient as they could all see the arrangement of scrap parts across our back yards. Also got the first batch of pegboard up in the basement and did a bit of tidy up down there as well. We keep picking at the "stuff" partly done each step getting us closer to having the house done.
Joe - kudos to your team and coach. It was especially touching that you could think of others even while not doing so well yourselves.
Jerry - that's an impressive coal drag. Nice job.
Jeff - nice addition to the roster. Hope you get over this latest setback soon. I can sympathize as my foot still goes numb and I have to grab something to keep from falling. Not as serious problem as any of your several, but I get some insight.
Todd - paint, stain, it all comes out in the wash, no? The good thing is you can usually keep adding once it's dry until you get the effect you desire. For sure the formation you show is mostly gray with some pink/red highlights.
Keith - for what it's worth the link at the bottom of your entries highlights two lines deep though it copies and pastes fine. Where are your casting tutorials in all that or am I just imagining it all? I love the detail in the castings. Was it carved or from mold of the real thing? The hints for a backdrop concave radiused curved formation form are ingenious.
Ray - Congrats on qualifying. Probably a good thing the rules changed on standing outside the equipment. I came into the yard once to w..k on the RS-11 we're redoing only to find some parent (in the loosest form of the word) was letting their kid use the locomotive as a jungle gym. And they got annoyed when told they had to keep junior off the equipment.
Der - I've had good luck with both the Testors clear glazing cement and the Micromark copy for individual panes especially in N.

Nice camera too - I've not had one that edits like that internally. I'm not fond of the "AUTO" setting in MS Office Picture Manager - generally changes things for the worse IMHO. Good thing there's a re-do button!
I was busy of and on all day Saturday painting the main station building for my passenger yard. Got it nearly done, and the glazing is next. I bought it on evilBay as a built-up. Whoever put the kit together either didn't have a steady hand, was in too much of a hurry, or didn't care, as almost every important joint is out of true. (...and yes, there are mornings when one feels like that too! LOL) I'm not happy with the dark concrete colour I chose, so I think I'll re-do that lighter. Pics when presentable. Late Saturday night I had to watch the Bay hawk-like with my anti-sniper rocket launcher, and - Well, well, I won, but there was indeed a last 10 seconds sniper attack! I'd raised the max twice in the last 20 minutes - good thing! So now the MT has 3 modern tank cars purchased in the last 10 days (two NIB) totaling less than one would be in the LHS, and the combined shipping less than the gas to go to the LHS to get one!
Ray: that engine house just gets better ‘n better. A real pleasure to watch a master at work! I like all the 2x4s in the walls - how high is that thing inside?

It's getting late on Sunday now - the East Sydney Station is pretty much done. The glazing took a while as I had to make individual panes for each window frame, rather than being able to over several window frames with a larger piece of window "glass". The reason is the way the kit was designed - the frames, even those actually joined together, are glued to the structure between the windows themselves. So each window frame has to have its own glass. Here's a shot with the camera pointed out from the back of the layout. I had to use a mirror to see the view screen! That's my wrist at top left! I used flash to get some light under the awning here.
Just a few minutes before another eBay auction closes - and if I win, I'm through for at least the end of the month - budget splurged. So, I'll say goodnight and God Bless, Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.

Well the party's over the kids are gone and the mess is mostly cleaned up. Dogs crashed out on the floor, grandma's resting in the chair before tackling the dishes and Grandpa's wondering how long before bedtime.
This won the vote for best picture taken. Sometime today Brookey, the Grand daughter, has gotten over her shyness with Missy and they had a blast. Especially with hot dogs and bubbles.
As you can tell, the wintertime heaving has not been repaired yet and I know what you're thinking. Where's the grass Brenda was pulling yesterday. I wonder the same thing myself. But I ain't a askin'!
Todd, yea the razor worked fine for me, but I needed something for on the road. I’ve been using a laptop and air card. With the IPhone starting at $49 for the phone that was cheaper than a new laptop and continuing the $60/month service fee for the air card. Both my kids are Severe to Profound in their hearing loss so just a phone won’t work for me. I did spend the extra money to get a 16 GB IPhone, that was a little extravagant but I guess I’m worth it, LOL. The joke at work was “you’ll never use more than 10% of the phones capabilities”. I think I’m at 60% now.

I got out of bed bright and early (6:15AM) this morning had breakfast, and the rest of the coffee in the pot and I headed out for the Rochester Institute of Technology for the Rule Book class. I arrived about 45 minutes early so I waited in my car for some others to arrive and then followed them into the basement of the Library where the class was held.
Surprisingly I was able to understand the guy who was presenting very well. Some people I can understand very well and others almost not at all with my hearing loss. The main presenter is an Engineer for CSX at the Rochester Yard and a volunteer at the museum. This was the first year we have had combined rules classes with the New York Museum of Transportation and the Rochester and Genesee Valley RR Museum even though we share trackage.... The BOD of both museums decided THAT becuase trolleys will soon be able to go all the way down to the R&GV and one of our small locos being put on line will be light enough to be able to use the Loop Track at the NYMT, we should be sharing one rule book.
We also had several changes in operations, such as we will no longer let anyone ride outside on the deck of any loco. Good! Too many parents think their 5 year old kid can hang on by themselves even though the railing is above their heads. Or the parent that lets their kids walk around on the deck to the other side of the engine without a parent going with them. I have seen too many close calls on THAT one. The final straw for the new rule was the catastrophic engine failure of CN 2699. They figure our old worn out diesels are more prone to that kind of failure than a newer prime mover and guests would be much safer in the cab or in the caboose if anything like that were to happen.....
I see I wrote a book here, so I will shut up and eat my RBF!

I'm not asking for someone to give me the colors and I'm not modeling this scene, I just want the rock colors. I decided to look for an actual picture of the rocks instead of relying on memory. Like weathering, it's the preferred practice, and I certainly see why. My memeory ain't what it used to be. I obviously have my memories jumbled. Now that I have found a picure to go by, it will be easier to get the end result by adding different colors. I shall dump the yellow ochre in favor of a grey to start. Coould have sworn there was more of a sandy coloring like grey toned desert rock. Maybe I'm thinking of the sandy sediment at the banks of some creeks and confusing it with rock. With me, who knows.
