Good morning. It's 61 and partly cloudy. Later it will be 81 and mostly sunny, which I think I like much better.

Wednesday the docs took me off the antibiotic Vancomycin and put me on another antibiotic, Zyvox, which I start using yesterday. It has a heck of a kick but no more than the vancomycin had at the start. When I feel up to it I have to go to the hospital to have a blood test done to determine how much of the Vancomycin is still in my system. According to UPS tracking my new Nikon L18 camera should be coming today. USPS tracking shows that the new GP30 has cleared Chicago. I took some time yesterday to set up a cake pan full of 91% alcohol an dput some tank cars in to soak and covered the pan. When I checked it later the paint had been neatly stripped. I gave the cars a gentle scrub in the alcohol with a toothbrush then set them out to dry. The remaining alcohol was poured back into the bottles from which it came where it will stay until the next time I need to strip some cars.

Good morning all. Say, I tell you what, if the punishment for accidently feeding trolls is a nap, I’m gonna keep on doin’ it! (just kidding) Had about an hour long one yesterday. Felt gooooood. Been tired lately. Don't know why. I think I need more jalapeno poppers. Cream cheese ones.

Today I’m heading to the basement first off. Maybe. Hopefully. I want to cast a couple of rock faces at least. I have the grocery truck to deal with and I should mow before work at 5. I also need to go through my truck as it needs the oil changed and a tune up- (with plugs) and it’s time for a set of wires this time around too. I hate changing the cap and rotor on the thing, it’s got that cab forward idea going on which puts the distributor under the cowl. Can’t see, just feel. Oh well, I'm used to that. It could be worse, at least I can reach it.

Speaking of rocks, Keith- Hey thanks for the offer, but I got me a book or two and a dvd with scenic tips already. I hope you find it before you buy another. I know the situation well. I am experiencing it with my stapler right now.

Have I told of my progress in the last week or two? No? Well bring your coffee, sit down a spell and have a listen……..

I made up a spray bottle of wet water.

Have a Great Day!!!!

Good morning.  Its sunny for now, and some storms this afternoon.

I feel a bit better this morning.  Just drinking liquids.  I have to go into work this morning, and that's about the plan for me today.

Hope everybody has a good morning.

Good Morning All,

Cool and rainy this morning. We're to have rain all weekend on and off but at least no fall out from volcanic ash yet. DIL is still in hospital but her lung function is back up to 94% now. Hopefully they'll let her out this weekend.

Der - APU is auxilliary power unit - a diesel genset self contained with a large water tank, heater, and pump in addition to the generator. Some also have an air compressor as well to keep the brakes charged so you don't have to wait for the air to pump up after a shutdown.

Nick - nice shot of my favorite subject in my favorite city. I'm one of the nut jobs that races around Schenley Park in vintage cars every July. Would it be ok to use the shot as a screen saver on my puter?

Rob - best bet for a lot of what you're looking for in vehicles is the 1/87 prototype group. I'll try to find the link or ask my friend who is active with them. There's lots of stuff scattered all over the net, but it's sometimes hard to find when it's not WS or Preiser. Sylavn Models is a good source also. In the meantime, I'll keep a lookout.

Galaxy - that would be a hand blown clear virgin glass 1 qt paper cap milk bottle Jeff is providing.. No?

Ray - we'll keep you and yours in our prayers.

Time to  pick up tools and so some w..k. In my spare time I'm making a set of links for my Focus to replace the factory stuff which is non adjustable. Can't go fast if I can't adjust it.   CUL, J.R.

A friend of mine set me up with a friend of his that was visiting from out of town to show her around Pittsburgh.  She likes neat old buildings, so I thought "oh we have no shortage."

I believe this was at the end of Smallman St where the NS line curves onto the Fort Wayne Bridge.  Ghost of bygone days!

Elsewhere in the Strip District, the PRR name lives on.

Always on the lookout for modeling projects.  This guy just screams for it.  I took a lot more pictures for modelling ideas, but this one is just too good to not share.  Almost any layout has space for something like that, and its right in the heart of a major metropolitian area.

Twilight does not like my camera, so this is dim and noisy.  I hit the shutter sooner than I'd have liked, but the way the city, the Fort Pitt Bridge, and the train fit together isnt that bad.

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a cup of decafe to settle the nerves....  I'll go sit in the back booth and just relax for a bit.

Just got home from the meeting of the Rochester Chapter of the National Railroad Hysterical Historical Society.   Had a short meeting and a great program on the Buffalo Creek RR.  It was all of 5 miles long, but at one point had 26 locomotives and 2000 boxcars!  They moved a monstrous tonnage of goods around the Buffalo port in their heyday.  It is said that they actually wore out some of the boxcars that never left the line in less than 3 years....  Anyway, good meeting.

Keith: That terminal block thingy looks neat.  Nice and compact. I have some three pronged adapter things that fit between the sections of the regular plastic terminal strips (à la Radio Shack THAT Ray is talking about) which do a decent job of making as many sections of those things common.

Probably from Radidio Shack.....  I have used a good many of them.  Like this:

This is a 4 space terminal strip.  You can see the "jumper strips" on the top.  I cut them and use them as needed.  In this case I have 2 sets of 4 terminals to hook wires two.  4 screws are wired together on each side.  Notice when this photo was taken only 4 of the possible 8 were being used.  here is another photo showing a bit more complex wireing and the use of them with the Tortoise Motors:

Kieth there are many, many different types of the terminal strips, so decide which type you would be most comfortable with.  Personally I like the type shown in the photos......  (Well yeah!  Right!)  You can get them fairly inexpensive at  the electronics company I linked to earlier, but I don't think the "jumpers" are sold by them.  The Radio Shack ones will fit if you get the same size.  have fun!

All evening I have had the same feeling of being sick deep in my stomack that I had 23 years ago when my Wife died of cancer.......  I am hoping and praying that whatever my DIL's mom has is curable!!!  Please keep her in your prayers.

Have a good night!

Good *yawn* Evening... bucket of coffee please, to-go.

Welp, I've got most of the stuff done for THAT THAT I'd planned to do. Still stuck on the 6th grade International Fair. I'm thinking mostly pics with a small blurb. Somehow, quoting a kid as saying "they grow a lot of stuff" in regards to the agricultural practices of a nation...doesn't quite seem to cut it.

I'm going to have to beg for an extension on the polytickians gabfest from last Saturday... too tired to deal with THAT one.

I interviewed two fantastic ladies from the North Liberty American Legion Auxilliary, Post 1976 for an upcoming article. Two hours of talking with them, 10 minutes of "content." Plus, hung around an additional hour just shooting the breeze with them and others in the warm evening of smoker land.

Tomorrow, I might get to cover Americorps volunteers doing a series of controlled burns at Coralville Lake, IF the weather cooperates. I'll either have to do "face time" then go, or will get to postpone/cancel "facetime." Might be shooting a track meet in the afternoon...don't know for sure yet, depends on what THAT decides.

*yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn*

I'd best get to doing something...even if it's wrong.

Good night, and best wishes for all in need, distress, mourning, or turmoil...

Haven't been in. Too tired to stay now.

Game tomorrow, so I likely won't be in. I'll have all Saturday to myself, so I'll be in then.

Good late evening Diners: I'll have a Malted shake, and a fried egg sandwich , toasted on whole wheat. Please and Thank You.

Lee:

"they can go fly a milk bottle!" I love it; I may need to borrow that line!!!!!!!
Heard one the other day on a BBC program called something like "Britain from above"...."Mad as cheese" - and that's the crazy not the angry mad. Hadn't come across that before.
How do you N-visible guys keep from going blind with details like that????
Thanks, and my present weapon of choice is a $ Store pair of x 2½ glasses. I've toyed with the idea of those magnifying visors, but fright quankly can't see paying good layout money for those while the glasses still do the trick. Oh, THAT, and laying off the joy juice I guess!Clown

Chris:

Are you to the point where you're sorry you asked yet???
Not sorrow, rather satisfaction! Big Smile I think I've now got enough to make a reasonable stab at this - when I return to the building phase of the project - station painting is the current "to do". Approve

Ulrich: I know well the feeling of uselessness and being wasted. I've found however that nothing in the way of experience is wasted, and that I've been led into things (contract work specifically) that I had no idea existed, but for which my particular skill sets seem to have been tailor made. I'll leave you to identify the "Tailor"! Angel  Troop losses are difficult - and.... (Edit out what turned into a too political rant) ...Let's just leave it that. I think Canada's mission in Afghanistan is worthwhile and needed, but is not being helped by current revelations. My sympathies for the families of your lads killed this week, and the nation as a whole. That goes for the casualties of all the countries involved in helping the Afghan people.Angel

Getting back to trains, but keeping the previous discussion in mind, I think it was TrolleyRob sent these the other day.  They were west of Toronto, which, come to think of it is about where he is! Big Smile. Good to live in a country where taking such shots doesn't get you........

Jeff:

The first time I had my nephew change them out. I told him the gap had to be set at 70 thousandths. He didn't listen and set the gap at 50 thousandths. Naturally it burned the tips off the plugs. That 20 thousandths of an inch makes a world of difference.
...an application of the law of inverse squares? Just curious. Question

Keith: That terminal block thingy looks neat.  Nice and compact. I have some three pronged adapter things that fit between the sections of the regular plastic terminal strips (à la Radio Shack THAT Ray is talking about) which do a decent job of making as many sections of those things common.. Can't remember exactly where I got them, some train show electrical gubbins table I expect. Used some just last month - still some few left to go.

JR:

Der - the little stands look like water and air or sand. Usually there is also an electric box to access where the locomotives get tied up for the night.
..thanks for this info - specifically are we talking about the blue hydrant-like-things? Also thanks for the other info. Where this stand is won't be an over-night stop place, I think, but electrical boxes make a lot of sense, and shouldn't be hard to do. BTW, APU?Dunce I've put both your suggestions and Chris' further down the page into a WORD.doc file under My Documents>Trains>Articles Thumbs Up Thanks guys!Bow

Rob:

Wife approved of the placement for the future plowed field (more like a corner suggesting one)
....don't forget the "headland" for turning equipment at the ends of the rows![shock] eats up real estate, but makes the Estate look real! Tongue

About time to wrap it up for another day. Only real mrr today was painting the white lines at the edges of the platforms on the Sydney Annex station - I'd forgotten to do those yesterday.  Reading the weathering articles in the May MR has me inspired - I'm eyeing the brown flaky ash at the top and edges of the burnt out stuff in the wood stove - poor man's pastels is what I'm thinking.  Any-one know why that wouldn't work?  Anyway, Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all those in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

In the meantime try some nyquil OTC, and maybe  some ibuprofen. Hope you feel better soon! WE will say an extra pray for you when then prayer candle is lit for all those who need it.

Jeffrey W. hope your battery lasts a long time and so does your starter. BTW when was IT last replaced?

Blazzin

Jeff.. ,lol... I put in a new battery Ford Aerostar last year.. my friend swore up and down.. that is was the alternator.   He said... it will quit in 9 months.. again~.. and you will still have to replace the alternator.  I hate to admit it.. but I think he was right ... 11 months later. Now to replace one... yikes.. is this gonna be easy?  Will I have to 'polarize' something?  I even hate to lift the hood of the van.. its that depressing for me.. if you know what I mean.  Anyone?  lol.

Been there, done that. In  the last 2years I have bemoaned the costs of replacing things of 10-12 years of age orriginal equipment things on my 98 Gr Caravan, with a few %($))^%# thrown in for giggles. Still needs new struts and shocks, about another $1,200 +/-. It's not always the amount of money I get quoted, but its the "+" that gets me ever time. I went out and bought a new to me 06 Kia Sedona minivan to replace the 92 Taurus we have which has its own woes taht we wont even think about sinking money into. WE will still keep the caravan that needs more work cuz its newer and we KNOW what all has been replaced/fixed and hope it runs for another 6- 8 years . Now if I can eliminate the payments on the KIA as quickly as possible.....cuz I hate payments!

Sir Madog

I am out of a job now for over a year and each day reduces the chances to find one. I have long given up looking for a job that suits my level of qualification, but being "over-qualified" does not help the situation either.

ALthough I am on disability, Sometimes it is nice to be in the "some college"  or "2 yr degree" category, enough to get a basic job flipping burgersif need be, but also high enough to be considered for jobs that do require a bit more education and having some years of experience of work behind you. I do feel for those who are over-qualified, chin up because something will come along for you. I understand some people to get a job leave off some college or grad school degrees in order to "dumb down" for a lower job-any- job-that- puts- food- on- the- table-job.

Well guys have a great evening!

Smile! it can only get worse or better!

Jeff.. I shall be on it shortly.. sooner than you think.  You think something like that can be taken in and rebuilt?  I bet the guy would even test it for me.. maybe.. it there is such a thing.  But I thank you.. lol.. you know.. I'm gonna go tell Jeanne.. Jeff says.. we can do it. Might as well check the belts and see if they need be replacing.. since I'll / we'll be down in there.  Thanks Jeff

I used to rebuild alternators and starters quite a bit back in much younger days. I built street rods as a hobby back then. It was child's play to take two or three alternators or starters apart and build a good one. Only difference now is the alternators have the voltage regulators built into them. If you take your alternator or starter to Autozone they'll test it for you free. They can also do a load test on the alternator to make sure it's putting out what it should.

 Afternoon again!

Went over to my son's house as planned, and he had taken the day off from work.  His wife took an emergency day from teaching to be with her Mom at Strong Hospital.  Latest word is that they removed a mass from one of her kidneys and they won't know the results until sometime tomorrow.  The family is already arguing about where she should stay when she gets out of the hospital, who should be taking care of her dogs, etc.  Some are making decisions on their own without talking to the rest of the family.....  My son was not a happy camper when i saw him.  I assured him I would do what ever I can to Help the family out in any way I can!  "The best made plans of ........."

Blazzin
Ray, I want you to know.. your post made me go out and mow the lawn yesterday.

Oh! I'm sorry!  Didn't mean to do THAT! Whistling

Oh, BTW, Kieth, Here is a link to a place I have purchased electronic items from for the layout in the past.  You interested in Terminal Strips?  Here are some (Only 33 pages of different types...):  http://www.mouser.com/_/?Keyword=Terminal+Strips   I have close to 100 terminal strips from 2 position ones to 8 position ones all over under the layout.  There is a 6 position one on each of the 64 tortoise machines and others at every location i split off the wiring from.  You ask about building a control panel.  It really depends on how you are going to be operating the layout.  I know some folks who have 1 major central control panel, and everything is operated from there.  Others have several smaller panels with local control.  Some a mixture of the above (Mostly large club layouts), and others have the controls on the fascia around the layout.  I have the last as it is 1925 down there and train crews have to throw their own turnouts.  Most of the toggle switches on the SLOW are for setting turnout positions, and so work very well on the fascia right by the turnout.  I have one other "control panel" consisting at the moment of 3 toggles by my work desk.  They are used for the very limited signaling and layout lighting (in buildings) control.  There is no right or wrong way to do this, and I would tell you to look at how and what you will be controlling with the board, and what you want to do for easy layout control.

Catch you all in a bit!

Sure is quiet on the farm now. Luigi was a bit of a barker and would get the other dogs going. Thank you all for the condolences! We're down to 2 old Pyrenees and 1 very arthritic dachshund-mix, down from 12 or 13 dogs.

Chris - what you need is a version of what my neighbor the ad man referred to as "another blast from the b.s.horn". Scatter enough verbs and adjetives around and "Bobs' your uncle".

 Laugh

I think I misplaced the BS horn...it's on my desk somewhere under track meet results, soccer match results, notes from jibber-jabbering poly-tick-ians... If FEMA will pay full-price to rebuild a 100+ year old piece of scrap iron resembling a bridge...will they pay to clear debris from my desk???? Likely not.

*sigh*

Thanks for the laugh JR...kinda needed it!

Ray, Todd... I thank you.  So they are also called 'Terminal strips'?  Wow.. thanks.  Although, I still like the one on ebay.. it is a 9 position and I like the mounts.  But that isn't stopping me from going down to an electronics store and seeing what they have.  But I do like those mounts.  Ok.. ok.. one more.. so aside from connecting the transformer to the works..and the correct attaching.. (color wires).. let me guess.. so the next evolution.. is some kind of board?  With perhaps switches.. and blocks..?  Is the fog starting to clear here.. am I seeing a bigger picture.. omg.. no its not a Kodak moment.. but a Helen Keller .. I can !  Well understand now.. what I read.. or should I say glance over.

Ray, I want you to know.. your post made me go out and mow the lawn yesterday.  It started out cold.. I swear it was cloudy and cold.. but by the time I got done the sweat was dripping off the back of my neck.

Todd.. I never got around to painting the rock fascia.. can't find the darn video/dvd on WS lanscaping.  Its my second time I've lost the darn thing.  Not the same one~  yeppers... lost the 2nd one that I went out and bought.

So~ if you haven't started.. and I go out and buy a 3rd one.. and find the second.. and if you haven't started your rock painting.. heck I'll send ya one .. for free!  So I guess there's some good for you not getting started on the rocks.. lol.  And when I find the very first one.. that will be up for grabs as well.  Its just such a good video for me.. well twice now.. I've placed it in a 'Good Spot~'  so good and safe.. I can't find em.!

Thanks Jeff

Keith - that's a ground bar for GFI fuse boxes - home despot or similar for the price of the shipping (it won't have the fancy yellow plastic pedestals).Smile a 1/4" furniture stud can do the same job with a couple of washers - just something metal to tie all the same type lines to. A proper buss bar can be seperated into individual circuits and act as a junction block.

Chris - what you need is a version of what my neighbor the ad man referred to as "another blast from the b.s.horn". Scatter enough verbs and adjetives around and "Bobs' your uncle".

Replaced the burnt out battery shutoff switch, now we can use the trailer lift gate again. Another coffee and back to w..k.  Confused J.R.

Whistling

Hi Blazzin,

I have been using these for quite some time and they work great. They save lots of wire. As shown there are several different styles but they all do the same thing. I especially find them useful on grounding, where you want many lines converging to one grounding point.

 Good afternoon.

Well I left early from work, just feeling like crap.  Took my temp., and its 100.0 degrees.   Called my wife and she will call the family doc.  The problem is......I have no insurance.  I guess its "over the counter" for me.

Der - the little stands look like water and air or sand. Usually there is also an electric box to access where the locomotives get tied up for the night. Some roads in colder climes have central heating with hot coolant lines to and from the motor to keep the engine warm while it's shut down. There is now an APU being marketed that can do the same thing (heats and circulates coolant whilst and at the same time keeping the battery charge up.

Something else, in case JOHN doesn't have enough little details to create... an "engine monitor" was (is?) also used in colder weather. The CNW had something set up in the North Yard for frigid cold overnights when a switch job wasn't w**king.I believe it was as simple as a phone box on a pole with a cable coiled up in it. Not sure how it attached to the locomotive. I know there's a blurb about it either in one of the timetables or Central Division Special Orders. Might have to go do some digging since writer's block has set-in (taking a non-event and trying to make an interesting bit of "content" out of it).

***EDIT***

Found it! In '89 System Timetable No.10 said: "When engines are tied up at points where mechanical forces are not employed, or on duty, engine is kept running and an 'engine watcher' or annunciator is provided, engineer must plug annunciator cable into jumper cable receptacle. Also, engineer must inspect engine carefully when taking up service to be sure that plug-in devices are disconnected before moving engine.

I haven't found it yet, but I know I saw something describing a box on a pole with a 50' cable coiled up inside it.

By '92 and , they had apparently found a better way: "When a low-horsepower engine is left running and unattended because it will be subject to freezing temperatures, the "engine monitor unit" (located on the control stand) will sound an alarm via radio if the engine shuts down."

Now if only I could get past this block!!!!!!!!!!!!

Afternoon,

Almost time to head out to my son's house, so I figured I will need a RBF to give me the energy to contend and keep up with my granddaughters........

Hmmmmmm.   What do I think?  I think I can buy the same thing for what he wants to charge just to ship it to me.....  Right over at Radio Shack. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103229  All it appears to be is a terminal strip.  Did I miss something?  Oh and by the way Radio Shack is just about the most expensive place to buy stuff.  There are several electronics supply places on line you can buy a few dozen at a time and get a much better deal.

Got the lawn done and did the trimming this morning.  Got back in here just in time to see our old friend back in and making a mess as again...........Angry  The mods got it cleaned up quickly.  Thank you Mods!

Hope you all have a great afternoon.  Catch you all later!

Good Afternoon All,

Just a regular coffee to go please. Don't want to participate in the bizarre car problems thing as it brings back too many memories. Lets just say that Murphy is a permanent resident at the race track.

Best thing to do with trolls is to expose them to sunlight. Real or virtual it freezes them right up, eh?

Hmmm - maybe Jeff could use an APU as well with the infrequent use and extra draw of all his special   automotive equipment. Perhaps just one of the solar charging systems with desulfator will suffice. Smile

Well, time to take my coffee and toodle off back into the shop. CUL, J.R.

Keith- Well, for it's purpose, looks pretty swell. Like a miniature ground bar in the fuse box.

Jeff- Ah. I see.

Welp. Came inside from doing some yard work and made an oopsy a few minutes ago, as a punishment I guess I'll send myself over for a nap. Warm outside but a cool breeze inside. Especially across my lazy chair. Makes me ..........

OK... here's one.. I'd like your honest opinions... lol.  Even the 'lurkers' in the corner of the diner who listen but never say a word~

  SHORTING SWITCHES

Now in the interest of learning.. and sparking other ideas.. only for the educational purposes am I posting this pic.  I in no means am interested in putting in plugs for someone.. but only to add to the enlightenment of the hobby. ( I also have written permission to use his photo)(if anyone needs it)  Yeah~  Shorting Switches.. "So thats what its called..." lol.  As a newbie.. maybe a list of easy terms and definitions.. with pics would help.  But when a newbie reads something.. and doesnt' have a pic.. well count on an extra thousand words.
