Morning ya'll.

I had an intresting taste of dorm-cooking for my breakfast. I made a pair of peanut butter, chocalate chip, marshmallow creme, and vanilla frosting sandwhiches. It was good, but my gut hurt for a little bit after eating it.

BTW, here's some "in progress" shots of my car:

Never did put pics up of the new car I got after I wrecked my 1997 Mustang. These are all "after" and "in progress" shotts.

Rob, I'll also ditto Lee's response to newer power. Except for the Life-like part. If it doesn't have either Proto 1000 or Proto 2000 on the box, it's probably junk. P2K locos can be had for $30 or less fairly easily.

Dick, It was suposed to snow yesterday, but it just rained since it went into the 50s by the time it started coming down. I may get another chance soon, it's supposed to be in the 20s for a few days and there may be more precipitation.

Good snowy morning.  It wasn't to bad getting to work, but a mess on the way home.  A ciuple of trucks got stuck right below the warehouse this morning.  Took them 30 minutes to get up the hill.  Its just a mess, and maybe more coming.  PLUS..................The townships around here are running out of rock salt.  Some towns have run out.

Well not much planned for me today.  Maybe clean up some, and thats about it.

Jim......That is the book I checked out.  They have a lot of ideas, and I will have to try a few.

Hope everybody has a good morning.

Good Morning. Couldn't get signed in this morning. Didn't get any more snow to speak of thankfully. Just some blowing and drifting. Other than that things are normal here. Still cold and the dog's eatin boogers out of the trash basket. Shredded Kleenex' all over the floor. Weird dog.

Jim- No, no separation needed. I don't follow football, or any sport for that matter, I just pick a team and play along.

PC- Good to see you've been workin' on the RR

Maybe I'll head down to the train room before my day starts. Well, it's already started but before I do anything. Well, I'm already doing something, I mean before I have to do.... Oh forget it.

Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning. It's 21 and cloudy. The high today will be 36 and partly cloudy.

Attended a fire dept meeting last night. Standard stuff, Bunker gear inspection. I got more exercise there in two hours than I usually get here in a week. Nothing special on the schedule for today. I'll have to jack up the right front of the car today so I can put the low pressure power steering line back together. I went of the edge of the road last night and as that particular line line extends below the frame it got pulled apart. It's just a simple matter of putting the steel and rubber lines back together and reclamping them.

JR,

For the same price as a 2-8-4 MTH I can buy a 2-8-8-4 Life-Like that has just as much sound, detail, and power that I would want from a locomotive.  You are right the BLI is better than the Bachmann, however I'm not impressed with the new ATLAS locomotives.  We had a (new) Atlas GP-38 running that could only pull 10 cars on a flat layout at low speed, sad that my (new) Bachmann 2-10-4 hauling 35 hoppers (with a proper caboose) out performed that locomotive.

So Phil - good morning ! Hows the layout coming? Any thoughts on the N & W suggestion?

Well, I got the jigsaw puzzle that is the staging yard put together.  It's in place, but still needs wired up.  The feeds are in, so I just need to break out the soldering gun and get to it.  As far as the N&W deal, I'm pretty set on my mic coast Maine location.  N&W and C&O (Gotta love those big coal drags through the mountains!) would probably be geat second choices for me though.

Good Morning All,

A coffee and some blueberry pancakes please Zoe. No need to rush around this morning as we're not going out past the shop in this snow. We're to get 1 to 2 " or 4 to 6" depending on who you listen to but it's coming down in a fairly serious manner just now. Driving in with the 2wd Excursion and the worlds second worst passenger (next to UnoWho) went alright since the schools are on delay and the saumuri mommies aren't out there yet yelling at the kids, texting and attempting to steer all at once.

New digs are nice tied up over here by the sanding island - lots of action to see out the window. Been busy with the house so not keeping up with posts again - hope y'all are doin ok.

Rob - I ditto Lees' response on the newer power. I loved my BLI I-5 and blueline M1A before I put them away. They just run like clocks good slow response and very smooth. I have also a couple of Bachman Spectrum steam locomotives that run well but not anywhere near the BLI stuff. I haven't gotten any MTH as they seem to have gone off in the wilderness somewhere with their programming and operation even though they have some nice features. I also consistently hear that they are not good slow speed runners requiring lots of throttle to smooth out. Perhaps someone here can enlighten us further. Except for the I-5 that I ordered the day it was announced, I get most of my expensive stuff from FDT or Trainworld. For N gage we've gotten mostly Proto N diesels. The only steamer we got was a Bachman which ran well but came apart after a month or so of the steady running the equipment gets at the museum. I haven't gotten a Kato to try but hear they're really good.

Well, my orders's up so I'll just kick back here a while at the RC and chow down.   CUL, J.R.

So Phil - good morning ! Hows the layout coming? Any thoughts on the N & W suggestion?

Mornin' all!

Chilly, chilly, chilly!  And the bottom drops out this weekend!  I heard someone talking about sub-zero temps this weekend!  Thats MIGHTY NIPPY!

So, normally band practice is Tuesday evenings, but last Tuesday the wife and I were at a meeting.  She's having bariatric surgery soon and the support group meeting was that night.  Anyways, so I called up one of my bandmates last night and we're going to hook up tonight so he can show me the songs for Saturday nights service.  Should be fun.......24 hours to learn 4 songs I've never played, and play them on stage in front of a hundred or more people.......no problem!  Guess I'll be spending most of Saturday practicing, huh?  And then I teach childrens church that evening, and I teach a cosmogony class Sunday.  Busy weekend!

So whats up with you all?

Oh, and Rob......The newer N scale steamers are light years ahead of the old ones in performance!  The Kato Mikado is still hard to beat, but some of the new Bachmann Spectrums are right along side it in performance.  Also, the Athearn steamers are pretty stellar in performance.Lifelike is very good, though tricky to install decoders in, and Model Power makes a decent product that with some electrical pickup upgrades makes a real fine runner.

ROB; the new locomotives are extremely reliable compared to the older locomotives. Lower starting AMPS give the option of slower speeds, the pick-up wheels resist dirt better and the overall performance can’t be beat.  On the older locomotives the Rivirossi are still good with a motor upgrade.  I don’t think you would have to get a MTH to have a good locomotive; Life-Like, BLI, and surprisingly enough the new Bachmann locomotives are very dependable.  My BLI will pull 45 cars no problem and my Bachman Berkshire will pull 30+ on a less than 1% grade without hesitation.    Dick, yea those kits are nice but really the underside detail can’t be seen until a major derailment, LOL.

Keith, hence why I bought used turnouts (brass) for $1 - $2 each.  Brass Peco switches are $3 each. They work just as well as the new stuff; once in a blue moon you get a lemon.    Sam, I have XP PRO and it shows FSB, maybe the home edition doesn’t come right out and tell you.  I’m going to let WIN7 run for a while and see what people say and let MS get the bugs out before I upgrade.  The local computer store was selling Alienware machines for $999.  I hope they have another sale this summer and I’ll be upgrading.

Pippa doesn't care for football and wanted to watch a western instead. She likes a good shoot 'em up. Must be the hunter in her.

Really? Rerun has become fascinated with football. We're thinking it may be due in part to the much larger TV (community college surplus) he gets to watch it on now. Confused

GLAD Pippa is doing much better, Rerun sends his best wishes her way...

Good night everybody...

Good Evening Diners!

Well I didn't really think any of you would take me up on my cold air offer but apparently most of you really were keen for it. Sorry about the snow bit but I only deal in air. Amazingly we only have about 4" in our back yard and that is the total accumulation since the beginning of December. Not really a good situation as snow provides insulation for plants so I expect we will lose a few this winter. If it were summer it would be a drought.

Bama, I was flipping channels a while ago and your game was on TV up here. I saw that your team was winning in I think the 3rd quarter. Couldn't watch longer as Pippa doesn't care for football and wanted to watch a western instead. She likes a good shoot 'em up. Must be the hunter in her.

Been busy at work this week which is a change. It was our year-end Dec.31 so I have to set up our Bad Debt Reserve amount and identify potential problem accounts where we might have a write-off. For 2009 our write-offs were really quite low. I remember back in 1997 we wrote off over a million.

Well it is getting late so I had best see about heading for bed.

Finished critter rounds and spent a little time running trains. Funny thing is, after sitting for so long, the steam locos that ran the best without any warm-up were several of the old vintage ones. The exception being the Kato GS-4 Daylight which is absolutely flawless. The vintage might not run as slowly, but they at least run when you ask them to and last forever. I now have several newer locos with virtually no track time that look spectacular and run like garbage. Thinking of having a minor sell-off. Wonder if the newer HO steam locos run any better? I am tempted to sell of a number of N locos just to have 1 MTH steamer, assuming they are as good as the ads make them out to be?

Good Night Y'all.

Cowboy Rob ps: foudn myself thinking of switching to HO....guess that second guessing my choices will never end.

Evenin' floks!

Just popped in for a quick cup of decafe before bed.  Did manage to get a lot done today.  Even spent about an hour in the layout room adding decals to one of the Flat Cars.

Tomorrow I have to get everything ready for the NMRA Meet on Saturday.  I hope to get the decals on the last of the Flat Cars and finish the dullcoat on them.  I will pick one that I feel came out the best to enter in the model contest on Saturday.  If I have time I will do a bit of weathering on the model with some powders to finish it off.

Hope you all stay warm and safe!

Hey, on the 80 year old guy, watch it - I'm on-call tonight; what if he's heading south on I-55 my way?

Fear not, my friend. With help from the family, they traced him back to his apartment in Marion (suburb of Cedar Rapids). He had the door barricaded by a motorized scooter. Marion Fire and PD busted in, found him in the back bedroom in bad shape... apparent med OD. Not sure how he turned out, but the "call-in" from the ambulance to St. Luke's ER didn't sound too good, a Marion Fire paramedic had to ride in with the Area Ambulance paramedic. NOT a good sign. Area's medic, when relaying the meds, or "M" of a "SAMPLE" history said "...he's got a gynormous bag of medications, we're bringing it along..."

I'm just glad, despite whatever problems the guy has, that at least he only took himself out, or tried to. Nobody else got taken with him.

And yes JIM, THAT calls ME...Mischief

TRAINMAN SAM: Good luck on all your upcoming exams! I tried to hire-on with the CNW as a brakeman back in '92 and '93. Did good on the "thin out the herd" tests, made it to an interview with a large hard-a** named "Buck." I think I was doing OK until I told him enthusiastically about all the time I spent train watching at Beverly Yard, learning how to count down the cars "to a joint," was learning all I could about the East Iowa subdivison, etc. Oops I later found out from a sympathetic brakeman THAT the RR wouldn't hire a known railfan...they thought we thought we knew it all...and they couldn't teach us anything for THAT reason. So....where I'm goin' with this, is how did you manage to get yourself hired-on with a railroad??? Congrats and may your wheels never leave the steel.

Actually, it's probably a good thing I didn't get hired... CNW got rid of brakemen in '93. They had some 89-day brakemen for a short while, can't remember for sure what year THAT was though. Apparently, on Day 90, the union got 'em, and the RR couldn't get rid of 'em. On Day 89, the RR could kick 'em to the curb. One week training in W. Chicago, then out to the field they went. I tried, couldn't get THAT either. Thought it woulda been a nice summer job...back in my younger, leaner, fitter, single days...

I forget how/why I never had any luck with the Chicago Central, my "second choice." Never even made it to a hiring session. With CNW, after applying through the former "Iowa Job Service," I was "invited" to the hiring session. The '93 session was in Boone, in what I think was the original Iowa Division HQ building. 'Ol Buck did his best to scare the crap out of us. When he stopped to take his first breath (15 minutes into it), guys bolted for the door. Everytime he'd stop talking, more and more guys would get up and leave. He painted a miserable picture, the worst life one could choose. Whittled us down pretty quick.

KEITH: Huh? Ya kinda lost me there Pal... I thought maybe you just really, really, really liked switches, and wanted a lot of them. I don't envy you wiring THAT up!

I'll yield the floor...Rerun is looking at me like he's saying "Dad...will you shut up already? Geesh!"

We'll hang here for awhile...

Hey ya'll. Some toritia chips and spicy queso dip.

Watching the game and pulling for Texas. I learned something today while sanding the many layers of spraybombs on the Eliminator scoop. Never try to flatten the sandpaper at edge on an orbital sander by putting on full power and running it against the pam of the hand; it asks for nasty papercuts...

Garry, That's a nice one there. I'm gonna take a shot at 'em below.

Jim, Each class requires 4 600 word essays. On top of the usual 50 page a day for each class... On the bright side I only have classes until the end April. I have to find out which of Florida's politicians voted for the accursed Gordon rule, see if they ever went to College, and never vote for them again. The way some of our politicians are, I think they probably dropped out of grade school.

Hey, Sam, good luck on the test tomorrow! And just wondering, which territory is it?

It is the NEC, tomorrows written exam is from: Hunter Interlocking (Newark Int'l Airport and Conrail/Raritan Valley Line Connection) to County Interlocking (Jersey Avenue Station and Delco Lead for Conrail)

The written I will take on the 21st will be from County Interlocking to Morris Interlocking (Morris Interlocking is where NJ Transit's Morrisville Yard connects to the NEC via MY Interlocking [pronounced M-Y Interlocking, as in the initials of the yard]) which will also include the Princeton Line (otherwise known as "The Dinky" due to the use of a single "two car Electric MU" set that runs back and forth from Princeton Junction on the NEC to Princeton University... All 2 1/2 miles of track!

our verbal should be on the 21st, which means it will encompass the entire territory from Hunter to Morris, inclusive of all yards (i.e.: County Yard, Barracks Yard[which is in Trenton NJ, where NJ Transit used to store all their trains until Morrisville Yard was opened] and Morrisville Yard)

The good part about all this is that once I finish with this round of Qualifying, I will start trainhandling... THAT is where I operate a train with an Instructor Engineer, I operate under his Certificate, and he/she shows me the proper braking points, car spots for each passenger station and speed restriction along the line!  I am a little apprehensive about running a train WITH passengers for the first time, but I think I will do fine...  I did move a full consist train during OJT (On-the-Job-Training) this past summer, the passengers and speed of the train will be the only differences!

Thank you all for your best wishes and prayers for me throughout my training!  Without you and my ever loving Wife, I don't think I would have been able to make it through!

Joe- I am qualified on the North Jersey Coastline, NEC: Sunnyside to Hunter (currently)

After trainhandling on the Coastline and NEC for a while, I believe they are going to have me qualify on the Atlantic City Line.  Once qualified I should trainhandle there, then move on to the last leg of qualifying, the Raritan Valley Line.  After I complete my trainhandling on the RVL I will have an opportunity to trainhandle on any of the lines I feel I need more work on, then I get my check rides and then promoted and on my own!

Chloe, may I please have a refill on my OJ? Thank you!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

hey guys.

All the talk of snow makes me want to go for a drive. Living in Illinois,ya learn how to handle the white stuff. Of course Im a country boy and going to school today was a nightmare. My bus didin't go over 30 MPH. Normally, you go fifty on the rural roads and still get ran over. A long ride from farmfields for city. made me wonder how the conductors (guards) on the big four handled the change.

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

Todd (and CN Charlie, and our other northern neighbours): we 'only' got a couple or three inches of the white stuff here - just enough to make the streets a mess(TM) and to thoroughly dirty up the bottom half of my car. Since it's not supposed to warm up above freezing until Monday, I've decided to hold off on redeeming my free car wash (from when I had the oil changed). The streets weren't bad at all, other than watching out for the $#%*^& idiots driving like 80-year old men... Whistling

Ulrich - at risk of being politically incorrect (not that I have EVER been like that...), you could see about getting a visa through Mexico...  Whistling That thing with your Deutsche Rwy. sounds like many disasters waiting to happen (even more than what you've already told are happening). I guess greed is truly an international language, eh? Wonder what all that $50 million will do to the IPO price?  Keep at it with your corner layout design - sounds promising. Maybe you could have some (below-waterline) pegs/dowels on the car float, to mate up with holes under the dock? On your local MRR clubs, that sounds good to me - our club dues are $25/month, but then again, we can lag behind one month and get caught up the next, and we have some (better-off?) members who are paid up some months ahead. I justify it myself by saying that club members get a discount on purchases from our LHS owner (and club member)'s place. But not everyone in our area belongs to a club, and some (gasp!) don't even belong to the NMRA. I trust that Petra wasn't looking over your shoulder at your closing quote, right? Wink

Lee, good to hear you are prepared for that blizzard heading your way! Thumbs Up Actually, looking around my collection, I think I'm prepared, also. Laugh Of course, I also have a large number of photos from your (and others') posts as inspiration for a little kitbashing, too. Yeah!!

Vincent - [OUCH!]

Bama, exactly how much 'dog snot' is there in Texas? (Todd, cover your ears!)(Hmm, I might just want to stay out from between those two...) Wink

Jeff, hoping your car's braking system has decided to 'heal itself'. (Amen...) Hey, you wouldn't mind if it did, right?

 Laugh Now, THAT's cold!

Ray, you sound like the busiest DIner in here (and you're retired. Oh, wait... - THAT explains it!). Smile,Wink, & Grin

Paul, I've been putting in a few AngelAngel that you and MaryAnn have bit LESS stuff to do around the place. I was trying to think of the last time I recall you getting some actual MRR'ing time in, and I'm not sure it was this year, was it?Disapprove

Dick, I missed the news today (altogether, not just on the St. Louis story). Sorry to hear about that - was that an AmerenUE plant? Last year about this time (I think), one guy just driving down the interstate saw some of their guys w**king on a substation and decided to pull off and took some shots at them. Two went to the hospital, though I heard they survived finally.

Saywer, our high temp for the day was early this morning (mid-20's F), and it's been sliding downhill since then - supposed to hit about 9 F tonight (Hate to think what the wind chill may put that to!).

PC, now that's a pretty li'l stack of ties! Smile How've you been feeling today, any better, I hope?

Keith, keep at it there - that looks like it's shaping up pretty well! About readyto start pinning/gluing/nailing down some of that soon?

Oh, Chris - does THAT editor call you for those 20 minute 'chat sessions'? I certainly hope so!

Sam, good to hear you lucked out on delaying your exam! Thumbs Up And best wishes on the 21st.

As the others said, Joe - just stick with your buddy for whenever things crash (as I expect they will, sooner or later...). And don't say "I told you, man,..." not even if he says something about "I shoulda believed ya man".

Well, about time for me to head for home and see if I get another night of good ol' ZzzZzz

Blessings and prayers and a warm place for your night,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Thanks all for the advice on the whole relationship thing with my friend. As of now, he still seems to be in the same place. He denies anything (although he hates the other guy, because he knows that he is trying to get with his girlfriend), but seems really upset. But he refuses to tell anyone anything. I was talking to his (twin) sister today in theology, and even she can't get anything out of him. We (as in I and his other friends) have done just about all we can, I guess.
Thanks anyway...

So, my replacement centerbeam came yesterday, but I haven't gotten to even take it out of the box yet. MAYBE tonight. But I won't be here tomorrow night. So who knows when I'll actually get to it.
Which reminds me, I still have to send the broken one back... Didn't have time before we went away, then it was New Years, and then it was the weekend, and then it slipped my mind. Maybe I can get my mom to ship it tomorrow?

Hey, Sam, good luck on the test tomorrow! And just wondering, which territory is it? Last I remember, you were getting familiarized with the NEC from Sunnyside to Morrisville. Is it that? Coast Line, maybe? RVL? Just throwing guesses out there... Well, good lucky anyways!

Well, I won't be around tomorrow night. I may be back in later tonight; we'll see.

True, but I would hope they speed matched the RAM with the FSB

Ah ha. I see what you're getting at. The number indicated by the red arrow here. The same number is on my memory sticks in addition to the frequency #, in my case, 667. I'm looking to upgrade to 800.

Unfortunately, I have Windows Vista Home Premium... I followed your directions and here is the information exactly how it is shown:

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard Company

Model:  s3600f

Rating:  3.0 Windows Experience Index

Processor:  Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual  CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz  2.00GHz

Memory (RAM): 2.00GB

System Type: 64-bit Operating System

I will open up the computer to check the cards tomorrow night, I will have more time to devote to the project.

I am not looking forward to more of the white stuff... Philly area and NJ supposed to get around 2 inches.  We shall see.

I'll be in the end booth for a while studying for my test tomorrow... Thankfully no roadforman was available to give our verbal tomorrow, so we get to wait until the 21st of the month!  An extra two weeks to get the territory memorized (thankfully, I could use the extra time!)

Chloe, may I please have a large glass of OJ?  Thanks!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Chris... " KEITH: Interesting pic you tacked-up...THATs a lot of tracks you've got going on there. Refresh my memory, please, just what all the switches/tracks are for??? I've been wondering where you've been lately."   Lol... My glorious attempt at a working 'Liner Yard'  .. oh yeah.. lots of liners .. lol.  Quick throw a net over this guy..I know~.  I want to have lots of yard space.. can't you tell? ..  Actually,  there's a good chance I've been going at this all wrong.  Woot!  lol, Maybe tomorrow or the day after I'll have some pics to show..  but I've gotten some fancy stuff going on there.  We'll see if it works.  Electrofrogs here and there and separate lines... in the yard.. from the very long yard lead.

But to refresh your memory would be also to refresh mine.. as well as Der John's memory.  I'm not sure on the sizes.. Peco's verses Atlas.  I was planning on using the Atlas .. which I believe were number 4's.. that Der John confused with the Peco's.. which were smaller..and also a different number...  in the mean time.. I had switched to the Peco's.. which were the size of the Atlas' 8..  so anyways.. get the picture..~?

But these are mostly Peco streamliner's the long ones to help with moving and sorting liners.. in a very small space,  with hopes of less derailment.  So they are almost placed end to end.  I tried to include everything possible for the given amount of space .. including re-railers,  and curved turnouts.  Also keeping in mind what would I need to have a working yard.

What amazes me most.. is the cost of something like this.   I would guess, to do track in this staging area is a minimum of $200 dollars and on its way to doublling that amount.  Yikes.

Evening all. Zoe, can I please get a RBF?

Just finished a bunch of homework, so I'm gonna slide over to the RC to catch up and chat.

Chloe? Can I have a large RBF and a coffee? I'm needing a very odd mixture tonight of stuff. We're seeing a bit of snow tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow night. By the end of all we could be seeing about 8-10" more of this dang stuff. The driving conditions have not been too bad this time with the freezing drizzle but we certainly had some hum-dingers out there. I'm on my Google Chrome browser tonight as I've got a bunch of stuff going on on the other ones. So I'm going to have squashed post syndrome here----
