Barry, Google SPROG2 and it will come up.  Also MRR did an online article on it recently. http://www.trains.com/mrr/default.aspx?c=a&id=3668 I think JMRI makes it, however the best price for it is on the bay from dcctrains. It requires a AC adaptor that dcctrains includes for free, other vendors charge an extra $17 for the power supply.  With tax and shipping I paid $106 for the unit.  It’s about $40 more than the RR-Circuts USB interface.

Good Morning. Heat wave today. Supposed to get to either 23F or 29F, depending on which channel you watch. They do however agree on the current temp of 25F. I don't speak for our Southern boys and girls, but I don't think this winter has been as bad as I remember them in my youth. I remember lots and lots of snow throughout the season. Nothing of course like feet at a time, but it snowed and inch or two somewhat often and a ¼ to ½ frequently with 2 or 3 even 4 inch snowfalls not uncommon at all. It was generally always cold or snow by Thanksgiving. Blowing and drifting, I recall a tunnel of sorts that got created by being plowed through on the county blacktop into town at least by the first of the year. Snow walls at the "S" curves at least 10 to 15 feet tall (no that's not one of my exaggerations. In fact we were just talking about that the other night at the Restaurant) and cold oh I remember bundling up and still being cold. I'll have to admit we've had some pretty mild winters as of late and I think we just forgot what winter was like here in the Midwest or Central States or whatever they call us.

Lee- I bet you got a good chuckle at the boaters aground scratching their heads.

Today is W-2 day for the Church so I must get there early so's I don't kill all day and I have to work tonight at 4 so best get a move on.

They still have Mammoth in Germany?Confused

Have a Great Day!!!

Good Morning All,

It's a balmy 4F out with a 23F predicted high. By Weds we hope to see the temps climb into the 40's but I'll wait till that happens before celebrating. Another busy day in the shop with plating and X-ray stuff to go out and bead blast stuff to pick up so I'd best get my coffee in a to-go cup and beat it. CUL, J.R.

Good Morning

Off to do some running around on a cold, drab, a little dusting of snow, day. Going all the way to -4C today with a few periods of light snow---amounting to only a sifting maybe. Tonights low will bottom out at -6C. The rest of the week gonna be just plain ol' dull dull dull....

Good cold morning.  Might get a inch or so of snow later today.

Not much planned today.  I might finish painting the legs on the layout today.

Hope everybody has a good day.

Good morning all,

Rob, wishing you a speedy recovery, those doctors are pretty handy ant fixing hearts nowadays I’m sure you will be in good hands.

Jeff, I’ll be placing an order for decal sheets this week.  I was on a volunteer FD for a number of years and found fire attracts stupid people.  Worse yet were my years in the Coast Guard, it seems pride and stupidity went hand in hand with the recreational boaters.  The most interesting years were when GPS and auto-pilots became popular.  GPS would steer you straight across land without any hesitation.

Bought a new toy: SPROG2, a USB interface between the computer and the layout.  The best feature is you can program locomotives and test them on any section of track without having a DCC system connected to it.  So if I want to sit in the dining room and program locomotives and test them I can.

Good morning. The weather guesser missed again. The low was supposed to be 23 and here it is at 19. The high today should be 54.

I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing today but any reason to get out of the house will be good. I was too tired yesterday to do much so I have that much more to do today.Still have to get the trash situation taken care of as pickup is tomorrow morning. The car will probably be taken to the shop today. The layout still needs clearing off. What happens will happen.

 Good Morning again

I safely arrived at the GULAG. Driving conditions are pretty bad - the roads are icy and covered with sn*w. Took me about an hour to drive the 10 miles to this place. Unbelievable - there are still people without snow tires on the road! The area north of us is in a pretty bad shape - snow drifts up to 10´ high and power outages are no fun. People are just not used to winter anymore...

Zoe, now I´ll have coffee in my LKAB mug, and  a french toast to go with it.

Chris - I am so sorry to hear about your job trouble. It just ain´t fair. I sure hope that THAT will get tired of her new toy and values your contribution in the right way pretty soon. I know how bad you must feel, being set aside. I keep my fingers crossed for you to find a new and more rewarding opportunity.

Keith - early spring? Jeepers, man, we are heading for a new ice age! In 10 years time, Hamburg will be covered by ice, our forest will be roamed by mammoths and we all live in caves -  our environmentalists will be quite happy, then.

Rob -  my special Angel for you, that things will turn out well for you. I´ve put up a candle in the Chapel car.

Packer - there is a lot of secondhand stuff available in the bay, but mostly of European prototype. US modelers are a minority here. The US stuff that´s available is of Marklin/Trix origin, which is way too expensive, even when used. $ 400 for a used Trix light mike is out of reach.  I just have to be a little more patient and wait for the better times to come. I do hope I don´t have to wait for too long.

Ray - you must be one proud of a grandfather - your granddaughter is just adorable!  I hope that I will be just as good a grandfather when the time comes!

Jim - in no way I´d be able to paint these little critters myself - I´d have to take off my glasses to see them, holding them less than in inch away from my eyes - no way, Sir. Thumbs Up for that super job! Btw - does the rabbit wear its winter coat?

You all have a safe and good day!

Good Mornin',

Welp, I see I just missed ULRICH... good luck in the Gulag today. Hopefully THAT blonde doesn't wear something to give your heart palpitations...Whistling

Speaking of heart conditions, ROB: Sorry to hear the diagnosis on the bradycardia... are they even thinking of trying meds or are they going straight to the pacemaker?? As always, best wishes to you and everybody else on the list for healing/recovery.

RAY: Awesome w**k on the flatcars. Refresh my memory, are the decks individual boards or were you just meticuoulus (sp.) enough to make 'em look THAT way?? Bow

JIM: Are you doubting Der John's abilities? Why...he'd probaby take THAT rabbit, in N-sane scale, and give it a proper northern climate multi-color coat with a fluffy white cotton-tail!Smile,Wink, & Grin Oh yeah, and he'd probably do it whilst humming, in three-part harmony, some fuge, fyuoooge, fuyuge...aw heck, something by Bach!

Well, today I'm gonna shovel the sidewalk I shoulda shoveled after the last "winter event." Then...I'll either make some calls for a story Mr. Boss wants me to write, or I'll make some inquiries to the other area rags about stringing/freelancing. As long as I stress I in no way will take an assignment THAT conflicts with my "regular" gig...there should be no "issues." And, if one of the other editor/publishers tells THAT "hey, you're photographer asked me for some w**k." So what? She's cutting my hours, I AM entitled to pursue other options...again, as long as no conflict of interest; shouldn't be a problem.

Maybe I oughta work for TRAINMAN SAM's wedding photog... 1,000+ pics? HOW? Geesh, I burned a full memory card (484) pics ONCE. Trying to narrow THAT down to 200 might not be as tough as you think...they must've machine-gunned every shot, so you'll have 20 of the exact same thing. Just look for everybody's eyes being open...for a good start.

On THAT happy note... I probably oughta start thinking about trying to sleep. For some reason, I haven't slept so good the past couple of days...

Hope everybody has a good, SAFE day, best wishes to all in need.

ChrisEight Ball

EDIT: KEITH: Pal, I hope yer right about an "early spring!!!" Keep in mind, the "experts" were saying this would be a "mild" winter. Now...it's supposedly supposed to be the coldest in decades. Now, granted, they haven't said anything about the duration of it... but I've got a hunch spring is gonna be late again this year. Disapprove

 Good Morning,

Janie, please, just coffee to go - must be heading to the GULAG pretty soon. Today is fun and games day!

Mark - over here, they make you install a filter system in your fireplace - adds plenty of $$$ to your bill, as the system needs to be checked twice yearly. Sometimes I wonder who is really the biggest threat to mankind - O(s)ama or the eco terrorists.

Jim - we are about 120 mile south of the Danish border, so we were not hit as hard as the people up north. My parents live very close to the border and have received a heavy dose of that white stuff. There is more to come!

That long and narrow layout was mentioned in the layout section - I googled it and found a description of it here

Well, I must be off - CUL

I'm jealous.  Fires in the fireplace?  Out my way, federal regulations controlling highway funds result in the local air quality district mandating "no fire" days, making wood and wood-product fires illegal.  This usually occurs on the coldest days when winds are still and the cold air settles.  For example, fires were illegal all this weekend as well as Christmas and Thanksgiving 2009.  Standards will be tightened even further so it is only going to be worse.  Thank you, EPA.  Next thing you know, I'll be paying fines for breathing out carbon dioxide, a pollutant according to the government.

It's warmed up here to 42. Finally something above freezing. I've lived in parts of the country where it gets really cold in the winter, that's why I live way down here in Louisiana now. Looks like the cold front is lifting a bit. The low tonight is projected at 23 and the lows will be getting warmer throughout the week. High tomorrow is supposed to be 54.

JEFF:  Rob, Jim, Sawyer and others in the deep cold south

The good thing about it is that it sure kills off lots of the flies and mosquitoes etc.

So keep smiling ya all...............

Special prayers and blessings to Rob, Jeff , Ulrich and all others who stand in need.

2010 you will find is going to be a much better year for all I think.

Off to get some ZZZZzzzsss as Work for the next two days comes soon.

Good Evening All,

Just a coffee and a grilled blueberry muffin please. Long day doing stuff in the house. Got more stuff put away, chores done, and the basement walls started.

Rob - sorry to hear about your health news. I don't have any schedule for the shelf layout, but I won't start until I get the basement done enough to have a hobby bench again and the CFO set up with her treadmill and wood shop i.e. with luck this spring.

Ulrich - check the link Jim sent earlier to Andrews Trains. There is plan after plan for shelf layouts and most can be expanded to suit. One of the twelve footers with loops either end would do for a start and allow continuous running plus a lot of switching. You can start small and build a bit at a time as money and material allow. I have had good luck with shelving brackets, 1/4" (6mm to you) luan paneling and 2"extruded  foam. Most of my last layout was done that way with the brackets on 16" centers and I had no problems with flex or for that matter noise.

Keith - If you want cork underlayment another good idea is cork sheet from one of the home centers. Another source is office remodeling where they just toss all the old stuff including post boards. When my mother w..rked at Cheeseborough Ponds corporate, they redecorated every three years or so and we had a lifetine supply of old carpet for the garage floor plus goodies like dry erase boards and even a complete drafting table and K&E drafting machine. But I digress (like you're surprised).

Jeff - good luck with the car repairs. Usually the low pressure return is just hose and clamped in place. If the line has a cooler in it you can probably have it eliminated without too much trouble. If you feel you must have a cooler, any cheap generic auto trans cooler should do the trick again using regular hose clamps. The special hose is carried in bulk by most NAPA or similar parts stores  as regular rubber fuel hose won't work (the fluid attacks the rubber).

Mark - thanks for the snowplow photos. Good to see some other folks popped in over the weekend. Love the layout photos Ray a snake and squirrel either side of the human, right?

Well gotta get some sleep before another busy week in the shop.  Catch Ya Later, J.R.

Ray - I would love to see some pics of your flat cars!?!  There's a RBF in your future if you do!!!!! [hint hint, nudge nudge]

Well....... OK.  By popular demand, here are the last two Tichy Train Group (kit) Flat Cars basically finished and sitting in the Yard at Hopewell Junction.  They are yet to be fitted with a load and weathered.

The other one:

And the two coupled together waiting to be in a train.....

I'll put them up over in the WPF thread as well.

Ah, Jim, I lied.....  There are 3 critters in there.  Look closely and you will see a black snake as well.....Wink

Later!

There are 2 of the critters in this photo...  Can you find them?

Ray, I can see the rabbit behind the guy leaning against the tree. Now the other one - might that be a woodpecker in the next big tree to the left? Didn't have my Optivisor when I looked at the photo... Now, when I get ready to do the details on the woodpecker, or the owl, or the fish... And where am I gonna find to put my fish, I'm wondering? Confused

Rob, it wasn't so hard to paint, since I was only putting one color on each critter (and they're still on the sprues). As I told Ray, I WILL use the Optivisor when I was to go back in and put details on them. Hate to think of doing them if I was in iNvisible scale - heck, I think even DerJohn might have some difficulty doing it!

Flip - good to know your place has heat! Between this winter and the gators when it warms up, whyever would everyone not want to move to Florida? Whistling

Well, I'm pretty full after my chili, and the RBF filled the corners in between what was left, so I'll be waddling heading home for the night. Everybody stay warm as possible, and hopefully your area will get some of the southwestern breezes we're supposed to get tomorrow to get us above freezing.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

[EDIT] Looks like I got top honors!  Eat UP!  It's on me!  (NO!!!!!  Don't throw the food at me, geez!  You want to get THAT reputation again!?! I sure don't! LOL)

Hey guys!  I had a great day!  Went to church, then to "On The Border" for lunch, GREAT mexican place!

After lunch, wife and I went to Barney & No Bell, picked up: Jan issue of RMC, several books on writing (for the wife), and Great Model Railroads 2010... (LHS doesn't carry this issue, ever??? beats me as to why he wouldn't).

Left the book store and went to my parents to pick up the Christmas gifts from my brother, his wife and my niece and nephews!

Got home and placed an order for BLI's SW1500, in NS colors so that it will be easy to repaint with NH&I Colors (Yes, I know NH&I didn't own one, but I am taking some freedom in artistic license, besides they did own an SW1 and they look "similar".  Yes, I realize I will probably take some heat for that comment, but hey, it's MY imaginary world, so there!!!Tongue

No MRing this evening, have to work on our wedding photo album, the company that we hired is also putting it together, but we have to select roughly 200 photos from the 1,293 that were taken!

Ray - I would love to see some pics of your flat cars!?!  There's a RBF in your future if you do!!!!! [hint hint, nudge nudge]

Lee/Jeff - Doesn't it amaze you that some of those types of people get to be as old as they do??? I mean, shouldn't "Natural Selection" have weeded them out by now??? LOL

I'll be in the corner searching through all those photos...

Sam

Jeff, can you send me a couple of pints of your blood? I'd like to provide an infusion of your "I might not be able to do all I used to, but I ain't done yet" attitude for some clients I at times see at w**k, who are still in that earlier phase you mentioned (feeling "Since I can't do everything, then what use am I?"). A person's attitude is probably one of the most important factors we each have going for us. (IMHO) Thumbs UpThumbs Up to you!

The biggest part of any recovery from say partial paralysis is having an obtainable goal to work toward. Physical therapy helps a lot but the mental therapy has to be there too. If the person is thinking 'I'll never be able to do that' then they're not going to even try in most cases. My mental therapy was simply 'There's no way I'm gonna be stuck in this darned chair for the rest of my life'. From there it was easier to relearn to do simple tasks and build up to more complex tasks. With my degree of nerve damage it wasn't easy to walk an 1/8 of a mile but I did it. It took me almost a year to get to that point.

Hi ,y'all . Youse dang yankees puhleeze keep your c c cold weather where it belongs. North of the Mason-Dixson line. Going down below freezing again tonight. Ice in birdbath melted slightly but still thick.. Yes Jim, many older homes do not have heat altho some have fireplaces. Firewood is readily available sold by home owners as well as regular stores. We have reverse cycle a/c-heat and it is a blessing. When I leave for work in the a.m. the temp. will be about 30f. Good thing vehicle has a good heater.  Almost time for shower and bed. Our prayers for all and wish you all enough.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I know I'm not the only one here with health challenges. Just want to stay around as long as possible, as there is a RR empire to build and some special needs critters who rely on me for their care. While I'm here, I'll have a bowl of veggie with chicken soup, please.

Jim, those sure are tiny little things. Can't believe you can do those without magnification. My wife will be adding a number of cats to Bubble's shed in her trailer park. (anyone who has watched Trailer Park Boys will understand)

Still breaking ice here, but tomorrow it warms up well above freezing and my life will become easier once more. Wife had to take off from work again tonight as well because of our local roads (hills & bridges).

Haven't made it down into the train room lately. I keep toying with the idea of switching scales and just adding on to the wife's HO layout for my ideas. IF I ever did that, I would keep my favorite few N trains and do the forced perspective thing so I could still run them along the wall. Main problem with switching (besides the potential cost) would be the difference in height between the current shelf and the wifes lowland layout. More of a dream right now than something I will likely do, as I would need to get healthier before undertaking something like that.

Afternoon/Evening Janie - I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich, bowl of chil, a glass of milk and a RBF for dessert, please. Thanks!

What with all the chili that they've been selling here in the Diner lately, yesterday when I got groceries, I decided to get the fixings for chili, and then after dinner last night, made up some and put it in containers (1 in the fridge for tonight and the other in the freezer for later). Dinner

Keith, we're supposed to soak the cork? Oops Well, ya learn something new every day in the DIner. Oh, speaking of cork, when I was at H-L yesterday, I spotted a roll of cork (3/32" X 2' X 4') that - I think I'm recalling this right - cost $12.99 or $14.99 for the roll. I'll have to go check my remaining cork when I get back home this evening and see if that's about the same thickness or not. And Keith, if that price is better than Midwest (or whoever)'s price for cork yard sheets, it could be less costly and deaden the sound for your station yard area.

Markpierce - thanks for the shots of the snowplows, and Sign - Welcome back to the Diner! I recall you'd been by a few times before, right?

Barry, you may have found the last of the HO cars in Wally's Place. Our stores in Cape or Jackson (just down the road) only have Matchbox or larger cars any more. Sigh I liked it when they'd have those Fresh Cherry or other HO scale cars every so often (particularly when they'd have 1950's era cars!). That other WallyWorld thing was indeed just bizarre... Lucky for you that the cement mixer got by that train, or there'd have been pieces flying all over and might've hit your car. Shock Hey, congratulations on findng the macro button (they aren't all placed where it's obvious to tell...)

howmus
Barry, hope you got a plate number and reported it!!!!

Ray, at first I thought that you were referring to your previous line, also. T'was, if you had been... Whistling But I now realize you were more likely talking about Barry's near-miss at the crossing. Hey, sounded like you had a good meet - looking forward to any pics that you may get from other attendees/presenters. Ah, I see you posted the first installment (link). And I was (one of) the one(s) who asked about your flat cars. Thumbs Up

Rob, keep taking care of yourself, attending to each step as you move along the process. Pulling for you. AngelAngel

Flip, I was watching the Weather Channel while I was out eating pizza last night, and it was amazing what all you (and parts south of you, even) were getting hit with there. Wow!! They were talking about how most places in Florida don't have heat (I'd guess almost none), and were telling Floridians without heat in their homes to get to a shelter if at all possible(!). Stay warm there until it gets back to your more usual weather.

Careful there, Ulrich - you'll wind up with a headache (after Petra learns about the blonde and bonks you with the rolling pin from the kitchen! Black EyeDead I overheard Chloe asking Vinnie to track down your home phone for her... Depending on how heavy N scale stuff is, it's possible you might be able to use metal shelf brackets and save some wood in building the support benchw**k. Where was the shelf layout you mentioned? I might want to steal look at it. Yeah!! How close are you to Denmark's border there? (I was noticing the European temps and weather while I was watching that Weather Channel, too)

Lee - do you think your neighbor has figured out yet about the burning ordinances locally? Smile,Wink, & Grin Good thing it was wintertime!  And Jeff, I'd say your neighbor is tied with Lee's neighbor for a possible Darwin award runner-up. (Well, they both did survive their stupid choices...) Whistling

Awrighta! Barry's joining the 20th century (we're shooting for the 21st by June for him)! (Hee, hee.. just kidding ya, guy) Smile,Wink, & Grin

We're supposed to reach 35 F tomorrow - and maybe have some flurries with it (but no accumulation, at least). Wow!!

Here's what I did yesterday after all my errands. Ray might recognize the starting point of these:' And I didn't have to haul out the Optivisor to do these, either! Now when I go back to add some highlights on some (like on the hedgehog...), I probably will need it. Hoping to maybe finish the basic coats of paint on these later tonight, and perhaps start on the 'wood' framing for the Delaney Transfer building.

I'll be at the corner booth, kicking back for a bit before I head home. Janie, have somebody nudge me if I fall asleep... But not Vinnie - his 'nudges' are a bit more forceful!

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

It's warmed up here to 42. Finally something above freezing. I've lived in parts of the country where it gets really cold in the winter, that's why I live way down here in Louisiana now. Looks like the cold front is lifting a bit. The low tonight is projected at 23 and the lows will be getting warmer throughout the week. High tomorrow is supposed to be 54.

 Afternoon folks!

I see we have a new face here......  Running Nose?  I hear he is somehow related to another guy in here... Running Bare?????? WhistlingWhistlingLaugh

Flo I'll partake of what Grayfox is having.  I am officially tired out for the day.  Spent a little over 2 hours watching (playing) with Olivia (Granddaughter #1).  Man was she a ball of fire!  We of course started by getting out Thomas:

Then we played "catch me if you can".  My house has a circle for a hallway and you can run around and around through the kitchen, dining room, and then past the bedrooms and bath again and again.  She would "run away" and then I have to try to catch her.  Then Grandpa had be the horsey for rides....  She helped me take down the Christmas candle lights I have been avoiding getting put away, and then back to:

for a while more......  My son needed to use my pick up truck (Anacrusis) to haul some boxes over to the storage unit they have.  Hoping my 2010 tag arrives early this week for the trailer.  As soon as it comes in, I will deliver a pile of used sound equipment to the school, and then my son can start to get stuff packed into the trailer as the storage unit is now full.

My son and his wife will be closing on a house and their old house sometime in the next week and a half.  At THAT time they may only have 2 days to get everything moved....

BTW, my great grandmother was half Seneca.  Unfortunately she was my "Step" great grandmother.  In my mothers family her heritage was usually shared in whispered tones even though she was the favorite grandmother in the family........  I might have been 1/16th. Native American..........Wink  I am a member of the Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts (Vigil Honor).  Our Clan is turtle (after "Handsome Lake").  Yeah, I know THAT doesn't really count.............

Later!

Good afternoon, I need a real hot chocolate please, I need thawing out !!. Sun has just dropped below the horizon and the temps have started down under clear skies and calm winds.

LEE: There is no shortage of people who lack common sense, sadly.

For you History Channel buffs, The AXE MEN starts their new season tonight at 9 EST. Talk about living dangerous, no wonder so many die from injuries in this line of work.

I think I will change my name from Grayfox to Running Nose....sniff, sniff.

Afternoon folks!

Had to be at Church a bit early this morning as I was on the program to do a Moment for Mission.  I have done a MFM for several years now for the Martin Luther Committee.  My Church is a big supporter of the work we do in the community and we have 3 of our members on the Committee.  I read a statement from one of our committee members who was a scholarship winner over 2 decades ago telling how the award began a major change in her life.  She now has a Master's Degree and works at a School for "Problem" Children (Hillside).  My DIL is a teacher in the same facility and works with the lady.  Went over very well....

Zoe, I'll have cup of hot chocolate and a Toasted Cheese and bowl of Tomato soup for lunch.  THAT ought to warm me up a bit!  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

I see the Chapel Car is outside.  My prayers to all of you who are in need for healing and strength!

Just got a call from my son who wants to borough the truck for a little while this afternoon.  Says he is bringing my oldest Granddaughter over so she can play THomas the Train with Grandpa.......  So I'll be back later!

Good Morning. Biscuits and gravy please. Yup, coffee too thank you.

Saw the Chapel car is hooked up so I stopped in there first. I don't think I need to list the prayer recipients. You know who you are. Angel

Boy is it cold out there. Don't know what the temp was this morn but the way my truck started, I don't want to know. Brenda went to Moms house to show it to someone who called Mom and is interested in the house. They must be to have found her in Springfield. I guess it wouldn't really be that hard now that I think of it. These are people who expressed great interest in wanting the place several years ago when she sold a rental house to them. Apparently they still are interested. For some reason my Mother doesn't want me to be there. She trusts Brenda to show it more than me. I'm thinking of holding that against here come Mothers Day.

Feeling somewhat light headed today so I don't know what I'll end up doing. Hopefully the train room will be included in my days activities. I'm rearranging some track at the grain elevator to come in from a different direction. My plan is to remove the loop in the center and come in more straight from the right. This should work better, and allow for YET ANOTHER EXPANSION!! The peninsula that has the "Town With No Name" will be extended to the right to the right end of the center peninsula after it is removed.

Maybe I should just scan a revised drawing.

This head cold, as Brenda calls it, or sinusitis, as I like to call it because I have no fever, is firing back up. Best get some more coffee.

Have a Great Day!!!
