Vincent- have you...., never mind I see I'd just be repeating what JR said. Sounds like a linkage or shifting problem with the tranny. A clutch problem and boy you'd know it when you snag the next gear if you could get it out of gear at all. Uh, er, usually. ( I quit saying never or always a long time ago)

Tom- Yup, though I do enjoy history I again wouldn't call myself a history buff. But as Ray said, sorta, I enjoy history much more now than I ever did before. As long of course, as there aren't too many dates to remember. Sure glad we aren't speaking Latin. But then again, we'd all be doctors! They know what the first 10 Amendments are by title as a list, but do they really know what they mean other than, yah, I know the date the 11th amendment was passed but don't ask me to explain what it means to us. By the way, I'd make a reasonable offer you'd go for on that 2-8-0. After a while he just may decide he's wanting a bit much. If not, oh well.

GMTRacing Vincent - bummer about the clutch. Is the shift linkage internal or external? Checking the cable first is smart, but if there is proper free play and travel it gets complicated. Have you checked the fluid level in the gearbox? Most people never do and if there is even a slight leak over time the box could be nearly dry. Does the car shift easily with the motor off? If it does that's a clue the problem is not in the gearbox itself. Good luck to you.

Not sure, the car in question is a 1990 Mustang. The previous owner said he recently replaced the trannsmission (don't know what type), clutch (I'm wondering if he kept the old throwout bearing in when he changed the clutch), and added a clutch cable adjuster.
I tried removing some of the slack with the adjuster but it would go back when the clutch was pressed in. The car is still hard to shift when off. Gears 3, 4, and 5 are okay, but 1, 2, and Reverse are very hard to get into (even with the clutch pedal to the floor, it sometimes takes both hands) . I haven't checked the fluid yet, but I'll check that when I bring the car into the garage..

The pectoral thing is half the size it was so the solumedrol must be working. Going to take it easy for awhile and spend some time in the train room....right after farm chores and re-running a cable in the basement for a little TV in the guest bedroom for the Inlaws.

Todd, right on all accounts!!! Even having a bed sheet touch the toe hurts like mad! It appears to be a bit better today. I can move the toe with little pain and the swelling has gone down. Still very red around the joint. I am pretty sure that it is gout as I have all the symptoms and I know I have had elevated uric acid levels for years. I guess I am a bit like Beethoven who was deaf and had gout... I just don't want to end up like the French Opera composer (can't think of his name) who used to conduct his operas with a mace. When the orchestra would get off beat, he would pound the mace on the floor to keep the time. During the last time he conducted, he accidentally pounded the mace on his gouty foot. The foot got gangrene and he died a few days later. Thus becoming the only composer to kill himself during a performance of one of his operas...... (true story) Maybe Tom can fill in the composer's name for me.
Packer, hope you get the clutch/transmission/linkage/whateveriswrong fixed soon. Not being able to shift is not I problem I like... Had it happen on a couple of tractors when I was a kid.

Vincent. if they replaced all that stuff and the car shifts hard with the motor off but really only in the R,1/2 positions it probably isn't the clutch. I'd check the gearbox and linkage first. Did the previous owner change the gearbox type? The car should have a T-5 with internal linkage so the best bet is to pull the shifter boot in the interior and check to see if anything is fouling the lever. If the lever is ok and doesn't have say the tunnel banked up against it, then I'd get into the top of the selector mechanism. Some of the boxes had alternate places for the shifter and if this was moved there may be bits binding there. Last but not least, did the previous owner try for the speed shifting record and bend up any of the rods inside? Once the shift mechanism is out you should be able to see the rods below and determine if they are bent and run into each other. Let me know what you find if it gets that far.
Ray - I too can sympathize about the gout as I'm also on diuretics and prone to getting all the same problems. I can't place the composer either but it sounds like he might have been conducting the anvil chorus. J.R.

Just got back from errands in Springfield. Today is Wednesday so Castle Trains is closed, however HL isn't and a 40% coupon was used to purchase WS Farmers Market people. Also picked up some Testors Decal Set. I was wondering, (bbbbrrriiing).. excuse me........ Welp just got a call and have to go open the restaurant up. Well, hopefully I can plow through the photo captions and a brief write-up for Clear Creek Amana High School's production of "Bye Bye Birdie." I shot a rehearsal last night...some really tallented kids there. One in particular, well...I saw a blurb with a brief synopsis. I saw the name "Rose" and without knowing anything about the charecter, figured out which kid would have the role. I was right, and she's great at it. The girl has a face for comedy...not a slam, she's rather cute, actually...it's more her ability to contort her face and the wide range of expressions she comes up with. The other female lead is a girl born to do musicals: great voice, pretty face, also a wide range of expressions. A fun shoot, I ended up with 199 pics. I edited it down to about a dozen to turn in to THAT for her final decision. All will eventually end up on the paper's website, in the hopes parents, etc. will buy, buy, and buy some more.
Oh, JIM, you were right...THAT didn't buy "Clippers neuter the Wildcats," she instead went with "Clippers take down Wildcats." Just doesn't seem to have the same...impact. Oh well. They went on to lose the first round of championship play, so I've got "Clippers sank at Centerville." She'll probably let that one stand.

I called the landlord to inquire about the contract - he has not yet received the approval to rent out this flat to us I need to arrange for the moving of our furniture, putting in the new flooring and a kitchen, but how to do that when there is still a degree of insecurity? Morning, Fried eggs, hash browns ham and Red Eye gravy please. Yup, bring on the coffee. Today: Sunny, with a high near 58. West wind at 7 mph becoming south. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 42. South wind between 5 and 9 mph.
Wow, slow night last night or what? I know I didn't get back home last night til after closing time so no MRRing done. That's kinda what I figured would happen. (actually I forgot we had a church meeting also until some friends came in and reminded me. Ooops. So that actually caused me to be late getting home.)
Mom day today, work tonight, not much layout time again today. OK, none. Maybe being as how it's Thursday and my FLHS is open, I can get some Polyscale steam black (settle down Tom. I'm not changing eras. I just want to change my 4-4-0 Jupiter from silver to non-Jupiter black for my tourist trap train.)and basically let them know I'm still alive. Haven't been in there in a while.
Barry- No, I don't get many calls like that. My buddy, who owns the bar part and waits on tables during the week and opens and closes the place, is also a salesman for a local contractors building supply company during the day. The company is changing their sales and inventory computer programs and have been having classes on the new programs. They have classes during the day one about every three weeks and he forgot about this one so it was a last minute call for help to open the place and cover him til he got there. He doesn't really ask when the next meeting is and if they do tell him, he doesn't write it down so his last two classes have been, "don't forget about the classes today" immediately followed by a call to Todd. I'll be ready for him in about three weeks this time. If I can remember myself.
Chris- No problem on the card. Kinda glad you didn't actually. Don't know were I'd put it. Make room between the second Tuesday in June and Daylight Savings cards I suppose. But with the big 2 weeks til Thanksgiving Day coming up next Thursday, let alone the New Razorblade in the Face Mower on Saturday, I'll be needing all the room I can get.
I'm ignoring the people who have reported "S" word sightings in or around their areas. I'm not ready for that.
Jeff- SSI or not, paint is outrageous. One half ounce, HALF OUNCE, of Model Master Acrylic at HL, $3.49. What's that, $223.36 a quart? AND, even though it's not thinned enough for an airbrush It's still thinned more than what you're getting. By the time you thin it out to the same as the little bottles of hobby paints. You may have a couple of quarts or even close to 3 there.
I guess shopping for MRR stuff is MRRing? So I guess I did get some time in yesterday after all. Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning... ladies? A stack of pancakes, some eggs scrambled up, a bit of bacon for color...and the bucket of coffee. Yes...I'm in far earlier than usual.
I never did fall asleep last night. Couldn't get comfortable enough. Then, just about the time I'm about to fall asleep...the Fire pager goes off. 0500 this morning, we get the call to land the helicopter for a local man who apparently woke up dead. I throw on my "job shirt" (heavy sweatshirt designed by firemen for firemen) shoes, coat...(yes, I had pants on) debate making a quick "pit stop," decide to just hope we aren't out long. I get out to my truck, it is completely frosted over. Oh crap. So, I fire it up, blast the defrost, and start searching for the scraper. I'm just about to roll down the window and stick my head out, when a fellow fireman from up the block rolls up. He stops, I jump in, off we go.
A while later, the big blue helicopter lands at the ambulance garage, which reminds me: for whomever was adding a helipad at a hospital not so long ago, the landing lights are orange. The pad itself is maybe 20' square, but has about 80 foot square clear around it, well except for the PROPANE TANK 40' from the slab...
Cute flight nurse and chunky, "butch-looking" flight medic hop out, we go to the bird and grab stuff for the ladies (cardiac monitor/defibrillator, drug box, "auto pulse" CPR device, board, etc.). It is always a strange feeling doing a "hot" off-load with the blades turning overhead. We're on the same side as the tail rotor, which is only a "shimey" of light back by the tail. A stripe on the tail boom marks the point between life and being quisenarted.
Despite over an hour of effort by our ambulance, a paramedic from Mechanicsville, and the flight crew...the outcome was negative. The flight crew loaded up, big blue helicopter flew away, we took up. Now, I've got the coffee flowing, and figure I may as well stay up so I can get stuff finished for THAT. She'll be expecting it all tomorrow morning.
JEFF: You make perfect sense to this underpaid miser... I guess I was surprised it held up so well on the weird plastic they use for the trucks. Any tips/tricks/strong recommendations for going the latex paint route???
TODD: I knew you'd understand (not getting the "New Toothbrush Day" card).
ULRICH: Sorry to hear the bureucracy is still wrapping you up in red tape. The landlord is waiting for approval to be able to rent to you???? That's the kind of Bovine Substance that makes my head need ducttape to keep from exploding. Hang in there. Good morning. It's 50 and sunny. The high will be in the mid 70's and it will be sunny.It's time for another visit to the foot doc. That will be early this afternoon. This morning I'm working on filling the screwdriver notches on the sides of my two Atlas GP40 chassis. I'm using Testor's contour putty for this. I put some yesterday and let it dry. It shrank up a bit so I put on some more last night before bed. It's dry now so I'll sand it down so it's level with the side of the fuel tanks. Afterward I'll turn the locos over and overfill the notches on that side. They should be ready for sanding this evening.

Just getting ready to head out to the hospital. Guess we caught a break and didn't have to get up before the sun. My son's surgery is scheduled to start at 1pm today, so we don't have to be there til 11am.
Well, it's supposed to be really nice here this weekend. They're talking about an indian summer type weekend. That'd be nice.

Barry I finally remembered the composer. An early Baroque composer of Italien birth but composed at the French Court. Jean-Babtiste Lully. Conductors did not use the batton that is used today and since Court Orchestras were considered military at the time Lully's choice of "weapons" was the Mace. Most gentlemen of the era wore swords as part of their formal attire. J.S. Bach was fired from his first conducting job in a church in Germany at the age of 16 for getting in a sword fight during rehearsal with his bassoonist. He looked at the man and said, "Du bist ein Zipplefaggotist (sp)!" Maybe Ulrich can explain it better, but he called him a bassoon player that sounded like a nanny goat and also refered to him in the familiar "du" which was an insult speaking to someone much older.......
I did not sleep well last night. Went to bed with a throbbing toe and a sore throat. Right now both feel pretty good, but all night long I couldn't get in a position where I could breath and not make the toe ache badly.....

Hi all, wow a lil past 9 am.. Woot! I still have the morning. Jerry thx for the pics... I love to look at everyones and check on each ones progress. Todays a cloudy morning... as expected, its usually like this .. everymorning. Takes a storm or a strong wind to blow these clouds away. So when you get up early enough.. and see a sunrise.. take a mental snap shot.. of what I usually never see. But the morning haze usually burns off by 11 am. Todays 'Show and Tell Day' I went to the hobby store yesterday and bought some goodies.. take a L@@K!
Things I felt I needed and couldn't pass up. Well .. well thats what I told Jeanne. But most importantly, I went with the sole purpose of getting glue. Never lose sight of your main objective. So, as recommended here at the Diner, I asked for Kristal Klear. And~ .. the saleman.. 'Hobbist' now stands up on his 'Soap Box' .. never answers where's the Kristal Klear glue .. (you'd think that would be pretty easy) and says.. "Well that all depends~" "What do you need the glue for? Many different types of glues.. for many types of purposes" Heck .. how did I know.. ? I say.. "OK .. a Pola building.. plastic. "Ah ha~ you see.... !" WEll to make a long story short.. i bought the Pola cement. I believe its the box.. about in the middle of the pic. Because.. thats what I am building.. and according to the "Main Man" all.. glues are different .. and are made to be used for their types of plastic.. so as not to ruin it. Wow.. I never knew that! But on the other hand he also recommended the 'Plastruct Plastic Weld' glue located on the pic.. 'lower center right'. I also picked up some precision pliers... I hate the 'nubs' on plastic models.. although.. a good pair of 'toe nail clippers' could have done the job. But whatever the case.. I can't see too well.. so I needed something like this .. with a 'straight edge'. Cool eh? And my 2nd copy / DVD called The Clinic. I placed the first one in a special spot.. I haven't found it for months. I'll probably find it today. And don't forget my 'Weathering Color's Floquil markers. I can see myself sitting there in my recliner .. marking flex track ... saying.. "Maybe I should have spray painted these buggers". And I also got some Poly Scale paints.. (water soluble) @ 3 bucks a bottle.. "Give me a bag!" Oh.. and on my way out I bought a bottle of Micro Kristal Klear. Lol. (white bottle)
So if anyone would like to give their own imput on the usages of the 3 glues.. i.e. Pola glue, Plastruct Plastic Weld, or the Kristal Klear glue.. I sure would like to hear it. Also, anyone try these Floquil Markers? Are they any good.. and what uses did you find them to be of use? Thanks!
