I must admit, all 3 of my kids are .. pretty good.. all in all.  Both sons would tell you.. "I am the son of my father"  whatever that means.  Although,~  Jeanne would say, "The acorn never falls too far away from the tree"  I'm off to the hobby store.. see ya in 3 hours.

Just a quick stop. Sweet tea to go!!!!!

Well I went to a guys house with a friend and man did he have a layout!!!!!!!  His name was Roy Ward, and he said he's been working on the layout for 30+ years Shock.  He has it like a true/working railroad.   He has several people over on Wednesdays to run it.  He got a train pulling some ore cars to show me some freight moving and it took about 6 minutes to get around the layout.  BUT.............He said on a working night, it would have taken that train 1 1/2 hours Shock.  Between having to let other freight pass, lights to change, get a working order, etc.   I was in complete shock.

He also has a mountain that leads into his staging yard, and the mountain has a camera inside to help see if something get stuck, AND the camera has three different views.  Just a very nice setup.

Its just something I never have seen.  He said I'm more than welcome to help move some freight, but that would end up a nightmare.  I'm sure I would cause a few crashes.

Jim.........I agree.  It happens a few times a year.

Afternoon y'all.  Just stopping in for a bowl of ice cream and a RBF.  Not much happening, went to w**k this morning.  I think that I got ahold of a real loon while there.  Guy comes in asks if I can test his electrical system, so I grab my tester and out to the car we go.  I check the battery, then the starter, and then the alternator.  Alternator fails the test.  Tell the customer, he's adamant about it, refusing to believe my word.  I show him the test paper, he refuses to believe that.  So he (in all the brilliant sharpness of a butter knife) gets under the hood and pulls the battery cable off the vehicle while running (old, old, old fashioned way of checking one).  Vehicle promptly dies, now the customer believes me, we go in, price alternator, he purchases, goes back out to his car, it won't crank...  The dingleberry fried the PCM on the car, so now its gotta be towed, have a new PCM, AND a new alternator.  Gotta love it!

Well that's about all the excitement I've got, so I guess I'm going to go and hang out in the corner booth.

 BROOOOOOOOAAAAAAPPPP!!  Thanks Todd...

Well, the wife's through the surgery.  She's sore, but doing pretty well.

Philip glad she is doing well!  I think you said your son was having surgery as well today?  How is he doing (if you know anything).  Prayers continue!

I went over to school to pull the levers in the machine (this is the last time these machines will be used I hear).  They have moved the voting area from the stage where it has been for years and years, to the large gym way in the back of the school.  I realized that after I parked my car.  So I limped  over to the correct entrance, walked in and the place was occupied only by the people w**king the election.  The guy who is supposed to be running the booths was sitting at the registration table playing cards with the ladies doing registration......  I asked who was winning as they cleared off the table, and one pointed to the man and said, He cheats!"  I looked at them all, then the man and said, "Oh you're a politician?"  Sometimes I just can't help myself....Whistling

Now I'm waiting for someone to arrive with the corrected list of people I have to print envelopes out for the fund raising effort.  If I go down cellar to the layout I will never hear the doorbell.

Oh, I see our old friend Al has made an entrance over across the street to pick on a friend of ours. Got himself banned quite quickly and came right back as someone else.  Wonder how long he will get to play???

Hope you all have a good evening.  Later!

Philip, glad your wife went through surgery well!

I've gotten my English paper all typed except for the closing paragraph, which I will type the day my teacher told us to so I can see if she gives us any notes on closing paragraphs.

Afternoon from Sunny/Unseasonably Warm Cal:

Hit 80 here today.  They are promising an Alaskan front to dip down here this weekend, we'll see.  Hello, it's NOVEMBER, we should be having our first snow in the Sierra.

But the nights have been cold, and the Fall colors are going absolutely crazy around here, so there is that little plus.  New England doesn't have a thing over the Sierra Foothills, the only difference being is that out here, our colors tend to peak at the same time, so it's brief.  But SPECTACULAR!  Tongue

Jim:  Actually, I enjoyed your rant very much.  I worked for several years for a 'pointy-haired' boss when I was working on my Master's some years back.  Beleive me, you've got my sympathies.  I feel very lucky where I am, teaching at a high school where the Administration seems to have a policy: "We hired you because we think you're very capable at what you do, and unless you prove otherwise, we'll stay the Heck out of your hair."

Ray:  Sore throat is gone, just sniffles, so I'll go back to work tomorrow.  You're right about infecting the chorus--who needs to be standing in front of 100 or more sneezing Basses, LOL?

Chris:  Loved your Priest story!   And yes, they're my kind of guys.  Despite some of the horror stories about the Catholic Church, I've only run into about 2 Priests that should have gone into another calling.  Most of the ones I've had contact with are a very realistic credit to their faith.

Barry:  Right on about the PC'ers, buddy!  Bow   As a fairly Liberal kind of guy, I'm STILL trying to figure out how that moniker got stuck with some of us.   IMO they've fallen right over the edge.  Besides, who in Hades would raise a pet to EAT?   As far as I'm concerned, Spring, Spooky and Uff-Dah can leave any kind of 'carbon footprint' behind that they want.  It's THEIR carbon footprint, for cryin' out loud!

Todd:  Ah, History.  There are two dates you should remember:  9AD, when Arminius kicked the Romans out of Germany, which means we speak English and not Latin, and May 10th, 1869, when the first transcontinental railroad was completed.  All the other dates are either unimportant or will take care of themselves. Tongue

Keith:  That is one HANDSOME set of pets you have!   And they obviously love your son.  Four-legged family is an absolute necessity, IMO.  Congratulations.

Jeff:  I was prescribed silver sulfadiazine about 20 years ago for an ulcer on my ankle resulting from a ruptured varicose vein.  It really worked for me.  It should do the same for you.  What did you use to weather your trucks in that photo?  Looks GOOD!

Philip:  I'm so glad to hear that your wife's surgery went well.  Any news on your son's knee surgery?  You and yours are still on my prayer list.

Packers:  As a teacher that reads about a TON of papers twice a year, my advice is:  Hit your teacher with an EXCELLENT opening paragraph and knock her out with an EXCELLENT closing paragraph.  Believe me, those are really the two incredibly important things for a paper.   Best of luck.  I know you'll do it. Big Smile

Well, since I was feeling a little better today, I decided to go over to Railroad Hobbies in Roseville and treat myself to some 'sick toys.'  Actually, I had to pick up some Labelle Gear Grease, my old tube had finally run out after 5 years, LOL!   While I was there, I picked up another Walther's wood Rio Grande caboose--the one that needs the inside of the steps filed in order for the trucks to swivel (!) and a couple of new Roundhouse Rio Grande boxcars (yah, like I need MORE boxcars, right?).   While there, I saw the most popular brass steamer ever produced, the old PFM Santa Fe 1950 series 2-8-0.  Cute little devil.   It was in the consignment case, and the owner was asking $500.  Kinda made me blink.  I have one that I bought in 1960 for $49.95.  Still runs like a little jewel.

One of the guys came up and grinned at me.  "Like her?"  "Cute as a button.  But I thought the brass market was slumping."  He chuckled.  "Not according to THIS owner."

Hmm.  It'll be interesting to see if the consigner can get that kind of price.  I mean, we're not talking a RARE brass loco by any means, I think PFM imported about 8000 of those little devils when they were a going concern.

The last time I saw one of those puppies on consignment, they were going for about $250.

Well, that's about it from SunnyCal.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

I used ColorPlace flat latex paint from Wal-Mart custom tinted 'rust' and 'rail tie brown'. I had them color matched from the Floquil rust and rail tie brown enamel colors. The match is very, very close. I have the mix numbers for the Rail tie brown but not for the rust. I'll be getting another batch of rust done later this week so I'll be able to get the numbers then.

Good Evening Diners!

PC, glad to hear your wife came through the surgery ok. How is your son doing?

Jim, sorry to hear you had such a bad day at work, was it yesterday?

Barry, have you ever been to 2B in Trains? It's a small shop near Fergus. I will be driving by there on Thursday and was wondering if it is worth stopping. If not I may be able to make it to Credit Valley Trains on Friday before my plane leaves. Yes, I'm off on a little business trip this week. I have to put the cold shower of reality on one of our dealers.

The weather here has certainly been seasonal with a high temp today of 36F. Good thing I got the back yard raked up on Sunday. It was cool, about 40F but at least there wasn't any wind. I got 10 leaf bags of rather wet leaves out of our little back yard. For my reward my wife made me one of my favourite roast chicken dinners. It's an old French recipe which means garlic and lots of white wine plus mushrooms and carrots.

Not much new on the Mortimer sub. After watching my latest steam DVD I realized that the chuff rate on my Consolidation was far too slow as I had felt for some time. I have to laugh at those who say they can get the correct 4 chuffs/revolution. Yes at a slow crawl but not when going a scale 50 mph. At that speed a consolidation's chuff would be more like a constant roar. I think a lot of the sound in HO steam has the chuff too slow at higher speeds. I recall Pacifics and Mountains going by me on the CN mainline when I was a kid at likely 60 mph and the sound was just a constant roar or close to it.

Well I can't think of anything else to say except, so long for now.

PC, good news that your wife's surgery went well

Sawyer, those introductory and concluding paragraphs are hard but they do mean a lot.

Looks like the new car needs a clutch cable or a throwout bearing. It has becoming very difficult to shift (sometimes requiring both hands pulling or pushing hard). My father drove it home while I followed in the Expedition and said something didn't feel right while shifting, so that might have been a precursor. In the meantime I'll be borrowing my mother's Expedition until my car behaves... I just hope I don't have to fill it up since that's a 60 dollar+ fuel bill right there on a truck that gets 14-17 mpg....

I actually do have some good news for once. A girl I work with asked if I'd go with her to look for a car since I know a good bit about them.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

that's cool. i broke up w/ my girlfriend after 1 week b/c she was in eigth, I'm in 9th, we never saw each other and never got a chance to talk. and apparently she ahd been wanting to break up as well, so worked out best for both of us. and we're still friends, so it's all good.

PC, glad to hear that your better half came through just fine!  Prayers will continue for a relief of soreness and a speedy recovery.  Well guys I'm over here counting it down, just a few hours of rest between now and 4am for us to drive up to Montgomery and get the birth of Mikayla on the way.  I'm looking forward to it even though I know that I'm going to be absolutely beat when (not to mention Amy is going to be beat too) its all over with.  Just a large glass of sweet tea for me right now, I think I'm going to sit here at the RC...

*looks at the seat, under the seat, anywhere near the seat*  By the way, has Todd been by the RC tonight?

Well, I've got the TOP, so eat up!

Seafood Special, please.

I spent the day/evening in the ER. Over the past so many days a new lump showed up in my left pectoral. Then last night it quite rapidly quadrupled in size, becoming rather painful. Wife (Nurse) feared it could be from a lung abcess (not what she called it, but basically the same thing), since it did coincide with using the cpap machine and we know my lungs have all those granulomas. When the ER Doc saw it, he thought the exact same thing and ordered an XRay & CT of the chest. Oh goody, more radiation!Dead The good news (great news really) is this wasn't lung related at all. The not so good news is the Sarcoidosis has been running wild and has set up shop all over the place. Although I will never go the long term prednisone route, short term I agreed to another solumedrol dose-pack, just to knock this C cup sized pectoral back down to normal. Will forgo the pain meds and save them for a real emergency, like if the tractor should run over my legs or something.Whistling I'll continue to use the cpap and keep my pulmonologist appointment later in the month. The ER Doc offered me a fast track appointment with one, but I see no reason for that. It's feels very good to be home.

Good night all. Cowboy Rob

Good Evening, Chloe - a Santa Fe mug of hot cocoa, please and thank you!

(Before whoever they put in charge of the BNSF runs it into the ground like the housing industry...) Oops Sorry, did I slip into a politico-financial rant? My apologies (sorta..).

Ulrich - good to hear you're doing the CV right (according to your job counselor, anyway). But from what I've read of your employment history in here, I would think you could do a good job on your CV. WinkThumbs Up Oh, hey, told my crisis co-worker about that German word for whoopee cushion - he loved it! Had him trying to figure how to say it.Laugh

PC - thanks for the email back. Good to hear about your wife's surgery. Adjusting the date for your son's in my AngelAngel accordingly.

Ray, take care of that foot between now and your doctor's appointment. It's bad enough when we have one Diner off his feet with something, we don't need to have two out of action at the same time!

And Jeff, how's the salve doing for ya? Helping some, I hope!

Keith, sharp-looking son there, and as Ray said, your critters sure appreciate him!

Robby, on your power outages - did you ever see that one Twilight Zone episode (where the Martians land outside of a town (or might have been a subdivision), and they hide behind a hill and just play with the power, turning it off, then turning on just one house, then a different one, etc.)? Smile,Wink, & Grin Doo-de-doo-dee...Whistling

Calif.Tom - hey, LaBelle grease is as good an excuse for a LHS trip as any, I'd say... Whistling As for the critter-carbonprints - weren't they here about the same length of time as us? So who says they can't tell us that OUR carbon footprint is too big (or Mr. Gore's jet, or...) (Oops, there I go again...) Hey, has the Golden Gate Bridge problem caused any traffic snafus for you out your way?

CN Charlie - yep, it was on Monday, what else? Wink Today was better, but they were saying they want to implement whichever plan/schedule by the 16th of this month... (and what's the big rush, anyway? Must be somebody who's supposed to be on-call the last half of the month, is my guess). [/mini-rant off] Your wife's roast chicken recipe sounds delicious - care to post the recipe? (Hint, hint...) Dinner

Vincent, sounds like an... interesting... trip with your co-worker. Does she have a sister who'd relocate to this area? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Barry - your LHS trip sounds like my luck when I go into one. Whistling

Wow!!, Rob, that was a bit of a scare - good that it wasn't what you thought (though I am sure it was no fun at all). Get you healed up and please keep that appointment with your pulmanologist.

(Checking under the window booth seats, seat cushions, the back of the seats,...) Okay, I'll be at the window booth for now. (And he sits down...) BBBBBRRRROOOOAAAAAPPPPPP!!!!

All right, WHERE's Todd? I'll show his keister a Furzkissen of another kind....EvilGrumpy Hey, Vinnie, c'mhere, would you like a little... uh... 'job'? Whistling

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

 Lunchtime in good ol´ Germany!

It is a gray and wet day, so I´ll have a bowl of hot chili and a Coke, Zoe, thank you. I´ll be by the window , carefully looking for a whoopie cushion before I sit down... Smile

Petra and I are eagerly awaiting the signed contract now, there is so much we have to arrange. Time is running short on us and I hate to do things in an unnecessary hurry. Sad

Although Halloween is over, I wrote a nice little story, which can be read here.

Will show up later again!

You all have a good day!

Good morning. It's 50 and clear. The high will be 77 and sunny.

Not much happening today. I picked up a type of painters tape yesterday that I've not yet tried. It's called 'Frog Tape' and is supposed to stop paint from getting under it. I'll try it on my next painting project. Yesterday was also the last day for one of my 70's era Atlas GP40's to wear it's original shell. It was replaced with a better detailed Bachmann shell that has the correct hand rails. Now both of my 70's era Atlas GP's are sporting Bachmann shells and Digitrax decoders. Both locos are permanently mu'd together. Wires from the pickups in the first loco are attached to the pickups in the second loco so each loco now pick up power across 16 wheels. They both still have their original Roco motors and perform well at low speed. The only thing I don't like is that big screwdriver notch in the side of the fuel tank.

Philip - my Angel continue for your loved ones!

Rob - take care!

Jim - I wish I had been able to listen how the guy pronounced that German F... word Smile,Wink, & Grin

Tom -  the place where Arminius beat the Romans is not really far away from my place. I guess he was something like the Taliban of the ancient days for the Romans. He had been educated in Rome and held a high ranking public office, but finally detected his "roots" and decided to prevent them from conquering the barbarian Germany. Incidentally, the start of the  decline of the Roman empire, despite the Duce´s and Berlusconi´s attempt to bring Italy up again... Laugh

Good morning.  Its another cold/sunny day.  Might even get some wet sno* tomorrow.

Direct tv is coming by today.  The tv did come back on, and had a picture.  BUT I think they might wanna check it out to make sure everything is in working order.

On my way to work this morning, I hit half of a deer.  The other half was all over the highway.  Thankfully nothing happened to the car.  A deer is hit about every 5 miles or so on the highway I use.  Why go hunting when you can just wait on the highway.

PC........Good to hear everything went well.   I'm sure it will tomorrow.

Rob......I agree with the others.............Take care!!

I guess I better get going.  Eveybody have a good morning.

Good Morning!

I'll have some TH coffee at the RC, please.

PC... Will continue prayers for you family. Good to know Mrs. PC's surgery went fine. Will keep you son in prayers.

Sir Madog

 Lunchtime in good ol´ Germany!

It is a gray and wet day, so I´ll have a bowl of hot chili and a Coke, Zoe, thank you. I´ll be by the window , carefully looking for a whoopie cushion before I sit down... Smile

Petra and I are eagerly awaiting the signed contract now, there is so much we have to arrange. Time is running short on us and I hate to do things in an unnecessary hurry. Sad

Although Halloween is over, I wrote a nice little story, which can be read here.

Will show up later again!

You all have a good day!

Yikes, everybody. Did you see all that chili Ulrich ate.????  ... He will not need a whoopie cusion!  ... The corner booth is off limits for now!..... Zoe open the window, please.... oooohh ...Zoe?... Zoe just passed out... this is not good..... uh, Zoe... (she's beginning to wake up)... She says she is taking chili off the menu.... Chow hounds like Urlich are dangerous with that stuff ........Oops .. Oh, hello, Ulrich ... I'm just kidding around here. ... I hope you have a sense of humor....That's not a piece of pie you are putting in that catapult is it? ....Oh, no.....Splaaat.... hmmm .... at least it was cherry pie....not bad........

I liked the wolf story.

Have fun everybody!.

Good morning All,

35 F but clear this morning. No rain predicted for another day or so. Museum night last night - I replaced a plaster tunnel portal with the same casting in resin and w..ked on the platform for the big station all on the O gage display. Our machinist volunteers there also and he's been doing an awsome job painting hills and surface plus scenicing on the display as well. The molds we made from commercial bits using Micromark silicone rubber for the molds and the two part resin for the parts. Very easy stuff to work with. Also for the last couple of years we've been collecting extra wooden stir sticks from the concessions at Lime Rock and elsewhere because they are perfect for dimensional lumber, ties, etc  We'd been unable to find the same sticks locally but I stumbled upon them on line and am now the proud owner of 10,000 5" and 5,000 7.5" wooden stir sticks. Cost - a princely $16.00 for the lot. I combined my order with some more stuff for the shop and thus got free shipping as well. Scratch building plank by plank just got much easier.

PC - Glad the operation went well for the missus. Hope your sons' goes as well. Our prayers for a successful recovery as well.

Bama - Today's the big day right?  Our prayers for a happy outcome. Bet the rocket scientist was surprised when the car wouldn't restart. It doesn't take much to blow up a CPU does it?

Jeff - Good thing the doc caught the infection early. I know the first couple of weeks with the mangled toes was the most critical due to the risk of infection and difficulty keeping everything clean and the dressings changed. Hope it turns out well and please keep vigilant.

Rob - take care. I know how much you like to avoid the docs, but try to humor them a bit. You don't need all that pain.

Jerry - hope Sallies' feeling better.

Ulrich - Sounds like the usual snafus. After waiting and waiting for completed paperwork all the grace periods will be up and you and Petra will need to scramble to get caught up. If it's any consolation, it's the same all over.

Vincent - bummer about the clutch. Is the shift linkage internal or external?  Checking the cable first is smart, but if there is proper free play and travel it gets complicated. Have you checked the fluid level in the gearbox? Most people never do and if there is even a slight leak over time the box could be nearly dry. Does the car shift easily with the motor off? If it does that's a clue the problem is not in the gearbox itself. Good luck to you.

Jim - reading about your dilema it amazes me how short sighted (yes, and selfish) the pointy haired bosses can be. Why is it if you do good w..k and care about the job and the clients, they take it as a sign of weakness and an opening to abuse your dedication? Cost containment at the expense of the clients is doomed to failure but usually ineveitable once all the middle managers pile on. Next they'll require to bunk in there so you can be available 24-7, right? You are probably correct in assuming the real issue is the boss bees don't want to be bothered with real responsibility or duties. Until your situation can be changed I suppose the only defense is speaking out and in the mean time as they say in the old country "illegitimus non carborundum".

Time to get on with it in the shop. It's quiet today as most of the lads are on their way to Daytona and I'm staying behind to try to catch up sorting the piles of stuff left from the move this spring. Catc ya later. J.R.
