Good morning all, Helped move all the heavy stuff out of my Grandmother’s apartment yesterday and now I’m a bit sore.

Ulrich, I feel for you, I’ve been remodeling all my friends houses over the summer.  So you are planning some layout space in this place??

Jeff, I don’t know what happened to super glue, back in the day it would instantly bond anything together, not as fast as bonding two fingers, but overall it was fast.  Now you have to add a accelerator or something to make it set fast.  Someone must have decided what made super glue work fast was harmful to the environment and caused it to be banned.

tom handsome locomotive you got there

I’m still waiting to see if my stupid electric company is going to send me two compact florescent bulbs.  If they do I’ll be finding a lawyer to sue them as fast as possible.  The State of Ohio passed a bill that all power plants must produce 25% less power by conventional means.  This 25% loss can be made up by generating power by alternative methods like windmills or hydro power, or even solar power. “FE” decided instead that all its customers will be required to buy compact florescent bulbs from “FE” for $30 each.  If you don’t buy their bulbs you will be charged for the power you would have saved by switching to compact fluorescents. Does anybody see any logic in this?  I just happen to have 99% of my house illuminated by florescent lighting.

Good morning.

This morning I feel like I'm in an old Alfred Hitchcock movie, "The Birds". .. Birds keep flying into the windows. They can get messy. Our cat is not at all pleased with them either.

Cal. Tom .... I like the 2-10-2, and I can understand the SP calling them somthing else. UP's were TTT's if I recall correctly.

Another type, the 4-8-4 was called a "Dixie" on the NC&StL instead of a "Northern".

Ulrich .. That locomotive has a quite an impressive tender. Do you have photos of the rest of the locomotive.

Barry ... Long ago, I learned a little German myself. I do not recall much of it. However, I'm sure I can eat German food. By any chance did you bring strudel, Ulrich?

I've been trying to learn DCC. I think it will have a long learning curve for me. Gus and I spent three hours on a couple of locomotives to get the running direction to be forward instead of backward when the controller said forward.

Have a nice day. I'm headed to Nashville this afternoon.

Ulrich: Audrey just told me to explain to Petra that the extra space would be good for your layout as a means of destressing your heart!Whistling She'll just have to share that space----MischiefWhistling

 Good Morning Folks,

Chloe, I´d like to have coffee in my LKAB mug and an order of hotcakes, bacon and eggs. Yes, I know, I shouldn´ t be eating this, but what´s the sense in turning to be a hundred years old if you have no fun?

Did not sleep well, my sore back kept me from it   DeadBlack EyeSad

Today, my neighbor and I will have the final go on the flooring. It takes me about three times as a long as any one else would need, but I have to go slow and easy... Big Smile

Tom - that an awfully good looking loco you bought yourself there - congrats! Those whaleback tenders look odd to us Germans - we built them the the other way around.

Folks , I already have to start fighting about that layout space - it is not much and I still have to figure out what to do with it, but Petra starts to claim that extra storage space Banged Head I am not (yet) prepared to give in - no, Sir!  After all, me thinks, I am still the Captain and she is the Chef

Okay, guys, as promised:

A couple of shots of my new SP F-5 2-10-2.  SP called them "Decks", which I understand is short for "Decapod".  Now you KNOW that Southern Pacific isn't going to call a 2-10-2 a "Santa Fe" type, right, LOL?

She needs:  A new front coupler, the gearbox cleaned out of old (really yucky) grease, and either a brand new motor, or the old one really cleaned up.  Haven't got that far, yet.  So this is a 'posed' shot on Yuba Summit, not running.  Get a load of that nifty little tender, though.

With SP steam, it always seems to be the Fireman's side that has the most interesting bunch of goodies.

Hope to have her up and running in a couple of days.  Meanwhile, I think I'm heading out to the show again, wallet in hand.  One nice thing about it, that sweet lady had a lot of help behind the counter.  I hope she realizes that her late husband's collection is probably going to a bunch of guys that really CARE about these locomotives.  At least it'll keep his memory alive for her.  And for a lot of us.

Chloe, could you pour one of those herbal tea things please, and I fancy a blueberry fritter. Thanks.

Goodevening folks, there's about an hour before the loaf in the bread machine will be ready, so I'll hang here while that bakes.  A productive mrr day today, despite the two sessions of fire-wood moving, and a morning spent visiting and Church Bazaar shopping. I've laid the first pieces of the dense blue foam subroad bed material, and am waiting (while that loaf bakes) for the latex contact cement to dry  on the final bit. You can see the partly filled in "grassy depression in that shot. Here's how thin (about 1/16th inch) the material is. I've also bashed that factory into an engine house, but there is finishing to do on that, and the bricks are crying out for mortar!  I moved the truck door that was on the wall panel I removed arond the corner to where there had been a horrible red based chimney thing, The design of the kit is semi-modular, so the truck door fit right in the hole left by the chimney. Thumbs Up I also cut down the main chimney to more of a ventilation vent, and put in a plastic casting I found in my bits bin to make it more "modern looking. No doors yet, and I'm in two minds as to what to do there. I favour an overhead door, as on all the other similar buildings on the layout, but the style of the building suggests to me the double leaf swinging kind. Any thoughts?

When I was in Town last week I had the camera along. So while waiting for Kris to discover if turning up early would get her an earlier start on her appointment, I took some photos of buildings in the light industry area on the rising ground behind Dartmouth General Hospital. The album is quite short, but has a variety of modern facilities and details that may be useful for my backgground buildings. If you find them useful too, be my guest.

Ray: On the tomatoes. They are incredibly good for a body. So, if you can't stand them ,but would like the benefits, try supplementing with Lycopene. That's the stuff that makes them incredibly gfab. On the yogurt - I can't stand the plain natural - but I do like the kinds that have fruit mixed in, Cherry being right up there as far as I'm concerned. How to eat it? Try this. pPour yourself a serving of your favourite dry cereal. Don't add milk, instead add a couple of talble spoons of the fruited yogurt, and mix it up. The cereal won't go soggy (within a reasonable time). Add some ground nuts, spices such as Cassia, or Allspice, Ginger maybe - experiment a bit. I find cream in moderation quite good on this too.

Ulrich: so glad to hear things are a bit brighter. At 15% heart function (if I understood you correctly), I htink you did pretty well with those flooring materials! Please take care. Room aloft for a layout? That's great! Yeah!!

Well, I'd better see if that contact cement is ready; Goodnight all, and God bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort, and peace.Angel

Eric:
There are high level platforms on the Coast Line, although mostly north of Long Branch. The only one on the lower CL that I can think of are Point Pleasant. Just like all the other cars, the MLs have the traps for both high and low platforms.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Kenvil Team Track, just north of Route 46 (not sure if visible from BVR, but maybe). You can see it on the M&E map of the line.

And the county and Roxbury have just reached an agreement a few months ago. Roxbury didn't want an active rail line within 5 feet of "their" walking path. And the funny part is that the path was built ON the ROW, WITHOUT permission from the M&E...
Check your PMs for a link to another forum, which discusses the Kuikens/Chester Branch Rehab, since I can't post the link here.

Report cards came today. Lowest was a 93 in Algebra 2H, which is a junior honors class, and is really hard. So not bad. And the overallGPA for the quarter was a 4.0.
AND, to boot, there was a note on the bottom of the report card. We no longer have school on the day before Thanksgiving. They're making it some kind of Teacher's professional development day, so it's now a 5 day weekend for us!! Thumbs UpBig Smile

Now it's my turn to buy RBFs, for the report card, and extended weekend! Enjoy!!

Jim, Usually it's not to bad. It's just the P2K GP38-2 is noted for having some funky wiring.

I got the GP38-2 figured out. Also did a modification I've been doing to P2Ks I've been getting so I can use the less-expenisve generic decoders (like a DH123) with an 8-pin plug as opposed to a loco-specific decoder. Now I jut need to get more decoders.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

***Tom, that brass collection sounds impressive, to say the least. And at those prices, even my wife might have found herself trying to purchase one. Feel sorry for the old fella's wife, having to sell it all off like that. Let us know what your final haul ends up being. (drooling over the keyboard here)

Haven't made it down to the train room tonight. Probably will settle on doing so tomorrow. Pretty tuckered out and still have Old Sandy to feed. Have a good night all.

Jeff, great to hear the good report from your doctor on the foot. How much longer for the home health and that poking thing in your side (IV)?

A couple more weeks at least for the iv port. I'll be glad when they finally do the operation to take it out.

Barry - congrats on the unplanned (but I'm sure appreciated) MRR'ing time. No. Turns out the transformer had just went POOF on its own accord----maybe the warrantee came due or summatLaugh They did get the power back on about an hour and a half after they canceled the seminar and we now have them for tomorrow and part of Monday now----sheeeshGrumpy

Good evening Flo - I'll have a RBF (since Sawyer's buying) and some cheesey fries, please. Thanks!

Heartland Division CB&Q
JimCG .... Glad your 13th was Ok. you are going to vaccuum? That sucks.

Well, Garry - my other option would be to hook the hose up to the other outlet on the shopvac and blow all the dust and stuff off, but then everything would be all up in the air, y'know...Big Smile

Vincent, thanks for the info on what to expect when I start putting my own decoders in... Smile,Wink, & Grin

NS Joe - that's a pretty nice-looking station, for so new of one! Thanks for posting the pics.

Todd, I'll have to remember that Kirby pre-shampoo stuff - I have some spots on the carpet that I'll need to clean (assuming I get to where I can see more of the floor sometime soon). Hope you did well with your chili today! Our servers in here are like a lot of women; they pass along the word on what happened during their shift. Shock Keep that in mind before you cause any problems for any of them...Oops

Ulrich - good to hear that you have neighbors who will pitch in to help you with getting the flat ready (and that you won't have to wear yourself out doing all of that). Space in the attic for a layout, eh? All righty! As for the ship, save the plans for when you get to this side of the Pond, and you might be able to find someone over here to interest in your endeavor. And HEY! No overdoing it there - we do NOT want you back in the hospital - Nein, nein, nein!! Grumpy You take care of yourself and rest up (for any excuse), until the doctor gives you the okay on any lifting and such effort, y'hear?

Calif.Tom, that play sounds like great fun - y'know, Riley might've watched a lot of Erroll Flynn movies and learned all that swordplay. Sometimes your students can surprise ya, eh? Big Smile Hope you find those W-S cougars, as I think I recall that there's two or three adult-sized ones and a couple of cubs (who should have a great appetite for deer...). Way to go on the brass addition - and maybe you'll find some more on your trip back! Thumbs Up

Jeff, great to hear the good report from your doctor on the foot. How much longer for the home health and that poking thing in your side (IV)?

Barry - congrats on the unplanned (but I'm sure appreciated) MRR'ing time. Y'know, around here, some power station transformers blow because a squirrel thought it was the flying kind, but didn't (any further than the transformer), or a snake learned the hard way that you don't wanna try slithering down those silver vines around the power station...Whistling Maybe the dorms will have a dinner with candlelight fricasse' squirrel tonight? Big Smile

CN Charlie, hope you find suitable couplers for your boxcar at the LHS today.

Johnboy - did I hear you right, that your wife got you off w**k today for four hours, to go do errands with her? Wow!! She must have some pull with your other boss! Bow

Today when I was heading for the DTRLHS (down-the-road LHS), I saw two UP locos with about 20-30 gondolas with nothing but steel coils loaded in them. Then on the return back over the viaduct over the tracks, another one whizzed by (missed the head locos), with mostly covered hoppers, and it had another diesel on the back end, running backward. I was wondering, do they usually run 'em backwards like that?Confused

Nah, Garry - Ray's just gonna 'play vegetarian' for a while, and chocolate chip ingredients don't have any meat in them, so they're fair game! DinnerWink

Rob, the doctor's office might just be asking you to call and reschedule - they do that. In fact, I have to call and re-schedule my opthalmologist eye doctor appointment for next month, looks like he decided to leave for Christmas break early (my appointment was for Dec. 23rd)...

I think I might've been sitting too close to Barry yesterday in the Diner - all afternoon, I've been having the snifflin', drippin' nose (and that ain't NO fun, IMHO!). I'll probably try to get  home and get to bed a bit early tonight to get more rest and lick this thing. Otherwise, I may be joining Barry and Co. tomorrow when I come in. Dead

Well, looks like I'm  buying now - Flo, start my tab and I'll take care of the bill tomorrow when I'm back.

Blessings and prayers,

Busy evening - car hit a pole and knocked the transformer off.  Meanwhile a fire erupted at the hospital across the street!

Joe - We don't have raised platforms down here.  I was under the impression the ML's needed them (?).

You're right, Lake Junction is tough to get to.  These cars were on a siding in Kenvil, I want to say Lower Berkshire Valley Rd.  I'll be home Thanksgiving weekend so I'll find out which road.

Good to hear the county may finally be doing construction on the branch.  I know for a long time there was a lot of fighting going on about that.

Afternoon all from Sunny/Cold/Cal:

Well, went over to the Roseville Train Show this morning.  AWESOME!!!   Packed to the rafters--the show takes up 3 of the big exhibition halls at the fairgrounds, and they were all full of people from toddlers in baby carriages to guys even older than me (imagine that!).

I was in the main exhibition hall and I noticed a HUGE crowd gathered around one large display.  Curious, I went over.

GASP!  Shock

A very nice woman about my age was selling off her late husband's brass collection.  All in boxes, all nicely displayed--there must have been at least 200 locomotives on display, with boxes of other locos under the table.  I edge myself in there, saw that it was all Southern Pacific steam with a smattering of WP and ATSF.  And they were all custom-painted.  And they were going for absolutely ROCK-BOTTOM prices, considering the rarity of some of the models.  She had a couple of guys helping her.  I looked at some Westside models and found a F-5 SP 2-10-2 and got sticker shock--she only wanted $250 for it, custom painting and all.  She apologized and said that the reason it was going for so little was that the open-frame motor was on its last legs.  Well, big Whoop, I can get an NWSL replacement can that will drop right in for about $25 anyway, so I'm still ahead of the game.

"Will you take a check?"  I smiled.  Meanwhile, there are locos being looked at, bartered over, and the crowd was HUGE.   And this one had a nifty little whaleback tender swapped off of one of SP's early Mallets (SP was Very Big on swapping out tenders on its steamers, BTW).

Believe me, if I didn't have to head down to church in about a half hour, I'd still be over there, loading up my christmas bag with all kinds of brass goodies.   I think I'm heading over there again tomorrow, and see what that very nice lady has left (if anything, judging from the crowd).

The rest of the show was fantastic--a lot of workshops going on, especially from Bragdon and their foam scenery clinic.  Also a terrific 'how-to' from a guy making some incredible evergreens--another reason to return, tomorrow.

All in all, it's one of the best shows I've ever been to in Roseville, and they're usually all top-notch.

Can't wait to get back.  Tongue  I still have part of my 'show budget' left, and my wallet's burning.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.  I'll post a picture of that big beauty of a loco tomorrow.

Tom Big Smile

But I couldn't believe the number of people at that brass table--and not only old farts like me.  They were all ages, and they were inspecting and BUYING.  And most of the questions were of the "How does this run?" variety, not "How will this look in my display case."

Got one elevator done with a covered loader/unloader directly over two spurs. 14 grainbins and 3 loader/unloaders--2 for trucks and the aforementioned one over the tracks. This'll be the one going to the Thompson Mill spur as Thompson Mill #2 plant. The only thing I'll have to do now is to build up the drier complex and worry about the web of conveyers and such---Whistling

Eric:
Transit is pretty good about keeping their locos clean. As for the end where the loco is, it is different because every train goes around the Bay Head loop (I have no clue why). All of the 2300 series Hoboken trains have the loco on the west (south) end, because they need to have the ventillation in Hoboken Terminal.
I have a feeling that since the PL42s are showing up in Bay Head all the time now (there always seems to be one or two, sometimes 3 at once), we will also see the Multilevels down there too. The most recent add-on order of MLs was intended to replace the Comet IIIs, which are basically all on the lower Coast Line. So unless they put all the new MLs on the Hoboken side and move the Comets to the lower CL, then at least some of the sets will be PL42/ML.

Thanks! And yes, you are correct on the location of the station. This is it while it was under construction.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=mount+arlington+station&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.28862,78.837891&ie=UTF8&hq=station&hnear=Mount+Arlington,+NJ&ll=40.89719,-74.632509&spn=0.003439,0.009624&t=h&z=17

I love the M&E! Favorite shortline! Looking on Google Maps, I assume you're talking about Mill Road, which crosses directly over Lake Junction. Norfolk Southern H02 drops cars off here for the M&E's High Bridge and Chester Branches. Target Industries in Flanders (has nothing to do with the store with the dog...) receives plastic pellets, which is probably what you see. Kuiken Brothers Lumber in Succasunna (right near Horseshoe Lake) will begin getting centerbeams in the spring, possibly after the County reconstruction of the Chester Branch. I have a few photos of the tracks along Horseshoe Lake. The Kuikens site is just west of here, but trains will need to use this trackage because of the trailing point turnout (trains will come from the west, pass the switch, and shove west onto the spur).

And if you find the photos, please let me know. I never knew (until now) that Lake Junction was somewhat accessible for photos, so I'll have to check it out.

Phew, that was a lot. Flo, can I get a coke, please? EDIT: Seeing that Sawyer is buying root beers, I'll take one of those instead! Thanks

Went to town and got me some brick colored latex paint for a DPM structure (Front Street Building) that I'm working on. When I checked my little bottles of brick red acrylic paint they were all dried up. So I got a sample size ($3) can of paint that's a shade between 'Baked Red Clay' and 'Mediterranean Sun'. Looks pretty good on the can lid. I'll see how good it looks on the model later. I also picked 2 packs (4 grams each) of Super Glue. I got the Duro stuff this time. I've had it with that LocTite super glue I got last time. I tried it on several things, following the directions to the letter. No dice. The glue, even spread very thinly, stayed wet for far longer than it should have and when I tested the bond some HOURS later it came apart easily. Elmer's school glue would have worked better! No more LocTite super glue for me.

Rob: You might want to have the girls hide that Union Pacific mug. With as much UP stuff as I'm patching over here the mug might get patched for the L&A too.

A large, extra strong coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Bridge of nose continues to improve. Have a new patch of irritated skin on back of one hand. Guess the sarcoidosis is causing these new skin oddities. Docs office left a message on answering machine yesterday, but I didn't hear it until late. Hmmm, wonder what she wants now? It's never good when they call you.

Going to unload some feed, put together one last hay ring, and work on ballasting the wife's track. Perhaps not in that order though.Whistling

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

Heartland Division CB&Q

Uh Oh ...

Ray is into health foods now. Odds are against more cookies from his ultimate oven.

NO, NO, NO!!!  Cookies are definitely on the diet.  Nothing in cookies that cause gout!!!  Raise blood sugar, yes.  Gout, no!  I can also have Ice Cream, no problem.  Cake?  Let's see, eggs, flour, shortening, chocolate, sugar,......  Hmmmmmm?  Yep, good nutrition!  Cake is on the diet!  Just no "Big Man" cuts of prime rib or huge New York Strip Steaks, Leg of Lamb, Pork Roast, chops, Clams, Oysters, Scallops.....  The stuff that cookies and the rest usually come after.  Guess I get to skip right to dessert.   YES! Big Smile

Garry, I wonder where Ryan has been.  I too miss the recipes.

I just found out that my hand truck will just fit into the back of my little Toyota Yaris.  I don't have to drive the gas guzzler tomorrow after all!

I basically have everything ready to be packed in the car for the show tomorrow.  I can now go play in the train room......  Except most of the tools have been packed for the show......GrumpyWhistling

Zoe I'll have what Garry is having minus the Hot Dog.... OK?

Joe - I saw one of those PL locos just the other day but it was on the northbound end of the train.  I wish I had a better look at the first one I saw, for some reason I didn't think it was the same (too clean!!) plus, it was on the southbound end.  Probably was a PL, just not used to seeing "new" equipment down here.

Those are great shots by the way.  Is the station at Howard Blvd. by the Rt.80 bridge? There used to be just a gravel lot for trailers at the bottom of the embankment way back when.

The M&E runs just off of rt.46.  Down on  the Kenvil flats, east of Howard Blvd. I forget which road, there is a siding where the M&E parks what look to be pellet cars.  Got a few pics last time I was home.  Maybe I can find them.

School has been tough this semester, research seminar in American History, (yeah, school. 53 and finally finishing college!)

Whistling

Happy Brunch time to you all.

I got to sleep in this morning and the wife made us breakfast . We usually eat breakfast separately as we leave for work at different times.

I ordered a Rapido Steam Genny for the CZ this morning from Can. model trains.  Will be anxiously awaiting it's arrival.

Ulrich,  That is wonderful news about your living quarters.  Good friends and nieghbors and some space for that Alaskan Railroad. Blessings come to those who wait and you have done that graciously.  I am really pleased for you..

Jeff,  You see, I told you if you behaved yourself that foot would start to heal up.  It must have been all of that Lawn Mowing and Alligator Hunting that you had been doing BAREFOOT.  (just kidding buddy) Really glad the feet are on the mend.  By the way, That is a great looking Water Tank you have shown in your last picture.Nicely weathered, and I never told you that I think those new background scenes really made a huge improvement to the look of your layout.  GREAT MOVE>>>>>>

Rob, Really hope you health issues continue to improve. You have had more than your share of grief the last while.

Hope your land dries out so you can move around more easily and that the flooding hasn't caused more troubled areas.  Glad to hear your wife is starting to pitch in on her layout. Let her practise there and she will be highly proficient when it come to helping you with your layout.

Well my wife says I should be getting ready to go out with her to do some errands, so I'd better get a move on.

Will get back in later tonight from work as I have to go back for 4 hours after supper .

You all stay smiling ya hear......

Johnboy out for now................................

You, a vegetarian?Shock Boy did they stick you in a diet plan----youch!Sigh

Hah!  Actually the doc didn't tell me to do the veggie thing, he knows me better.....Whistling  I did some major research in some good sites (webMD, etc.) and figured that since the doc is not going to change my meds, I can reduce the amount that I eat of the stuff that causes blood uric acid levels to sky rocket.  Might be a good thing to try.  My sister suggested that I eat a lot of yogurt.....  yyyyyyuuuuuuccckkk!  That stuff has the consistency of slime and tastes like.... well a word that they don't let you use here.  She told me that I could have lots of tasty vegetables like she does.  Broccoli, carrots, celery, tomatoes (I hate tomatoes!).  I reminded her that on every third corner of every human city there is a donut shop.  On NO corner of any human city will you find a Broccoli Shop!  While humans will eat most anything, they prefer donuts!  Now vegetables are fine, I don't really dislike them, but......... I can use dairy products and eggs with no problem, but I am going to give up "red" meat for a while and have 2 or 3 days a week withour any kind of meat.  Might help.....?  I have always been one that agreed with that billboard  that says, "There is room for all of God's creatures.  Right next to the mashed potatoes!"

Oh well, tough getting old.  Just better than the other alternative!

[edit] Now look what happened! I get to buy lunch for everyone!  OK Zoe, anyone buying the Vegetarian special today, put it on my tab!  OK?

 Good Evening,

Zoe, I´ll have a RBF - haven´t had one for quite some time. What´s that strange noise coming from the corner? Nothing to worry about, you say? Only Barry coughing and Duke snoring ... Whistling

Moved about half a ton of floor boards from the truck up into the flat and started to lay the new flooring. That hazelnut colored wood looks really good - especially when compared to this awkward vinyl covering which used to be in. My neighbor really pitched in - I am afraid I was not much of help other than fetching tools and be a helper trying to stay out of his way. We are about half-way done, tomorrow that part will be finished and marked off the list. I now have an aching back and the old "ticker" is a little out of its rhythm, but I hope the night´s rest will take care of that.

See you guys tomorrow!
