Evening, Chloe - I'll have a hot fudge sundae and a Rio Grande mug of decaf, please. Just now getting done with w**k (I did have a 30-45 minute gap in there for dinner, at least). Found out some intricacies of commitments and how it's different when it's a veteran (not much...). This one shouldn't have taken nearly as long as it did. Sooooo glad tomorrow is Friday (except that I have to do laundry tomorrow night, since I'm on-call for most all of Saturday). I will be SO ready for Labor Day weekend!!
Eric, good to hear your family estate ordeals are about over at last. Also good that things are cooling off some and it won't be long until you can resume MRR'ing (hopefully).
Think I'd like a transplant for my sinuses tonight. First, last night I got the chicken too long on one side (ever had the aftersmell that follows the smoke alarm going off when some chicken drippings/grease sizzles too much?), which after running the bathroom exhaust fan most all of the afternoon (non-exhaust in the hood over the stove), still left the smell in the apartment. Then tonight, the local police dept.'s phones (and therefore their fax also) was on the fritz, so I had to go use a fax at one of the local residential facilities in the area to send and receive a fax (ya know the smell of very stale smoke and subdued urine smells that residential facilities can have? Yep, this one had that - and it's the dickens to get it out of your nose!). Okay, I'll quit whining (for now...).
Jerry, hope your Medicare chair guy actually is that quick, so your other guy doesn't run out of spare tires in the meantime with changing your flats out.
Ray - your little scene across the street sounds like - who is it, Woodland Scenics'?? - figure set that has about four other w**kers and one actually doing the road patching.Maybe you could take photos of them and match their clothing colors on the W-S set (repainting as needed)... Here's the set on the W-S site: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/images/A1927B.GIF
Robby, will you need to contact the Brinks folks for a guard for all that money? Let's see, if that was for an 8 hour day, that w**ks out to about (divide, carry the 2, and...) less than $2.25 an hour? Excellent job on this boxcar, again. Do you get many repeat customers on the 'Bay? Sure would be good if you could 'develop a clientele' there.
Man, Ryan - sorry to hear about your losing Kitty. I'm sure it likely will be worse for Ben, too. Ditto on Ray's comments about prayers.
Bama, I'm about as clueless about model drivetrains as I am about the 1:1 size ones (trains, cars, planes, whatever...). I'll defer to just about everybody else in the Diner on that one.
Rob, hope that deal with your in-laws' nursing home lines up so your wife doesn't need to go check as often (though she may still want to some, just because they're her parents).
About time for me to head for home - but we'll leave Duke there in that booth; his does a pretty good job of scaring away any mice that wander in the Diner, Chloe told me...
[Edit]: Looks like I have the late night snackers and Ulrich's morning meal covered! Chloe, start a tab for me, and tell Zoe I'll check back in the morning on how much damage the chowhounds did to it.
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Garry,

The lumber is sitting out in the garage for phase I of my layout to begin construction tomorrow. Its not going to be operational, and will largely be a good size diorama (nine feet long, two feet deep). Phase II will allow for operation but I need to start somewhere.
I'm going with quarter inch birch plywood with half inch foam on top, with cork for the "main." Industrial area, so flat as aboard is the target. I used to have a layout with quarter inch plywood with half inch homosote on top. But foam is 1) a lot cheaper 2) easier to work with 3) several orders of magnitude lighter and 4) heck I can plant trees and such without a drill.
Well all, its been fun night, but its now time to hit the sack. The child is asleep on her little pull out couch in the living room and the Bearenstein Bears is playing on TV. So I'm off to bed, to go and get ready for the day tomorrow. Goodnight all!

I'm a small town boy. A product of two people from even smaller towns. I don’t talk on topic….. I just talk.
Good Eve...Morning,
After two or three days of near solid rain, the deluge has finally moved east... heads-up Illinoisians, you're gonna get WET. We've had at least 8-10 inches of rain here in Clarence, lots of flash-flooding around the region yesterday afternoon. UPRR still running track inspectors back and forth watching for any wash-outs.
RYAN: Sorry to hear about your Kitty, that's gotta be rough. It was a sad affair when my wife's favorite cat, Buddy, passed on a few years ago.
JERRY: Hope they're right about getting your new chair to you, hope they can do it even quicker.
TODD: This is going back a few days, but you mentioned a "transplant" who didn't have a clue at your town hall meeting... did he manage to walk back out the door under his own power? Or did he have some "help" finding his way out?? Sounds like a glittering jewel of collossal ignorance.
JIM: I know the "smell" of residential facilities all too well... one of the many things I do NOT miss about EMS and home healthcare delivery.
JEFF: We've had some of those "surprise" thunderstorms this year too. I don't know what's up with NWS, but they've really dropped the ball a few times this year. Martelle (near Anamosa) got hit with a small twister last week...might've been the same system that visited Todd. No warning. Spotters (vol. Fire Dept.) weren't even out. All the tornado reports were coming in from counties well to the north.
SAWYER: So let me see if I've got this situation right... your high school is playing SOUTH Aiken? So it's North vs. South? Well...if that's the case, congratulations on becoming a YANKEE! If you guys win, does the rivalry then become "the war of northern aggression" next year?? **note: proud supporter of states rights**
DER JOHN: That tar oil tank is amazing! I especially am impressed with the leaf springs. I may have to go revisit the small utility trailer I knocked together a few months back. I'm happy with it, but the leaf springs would really snazz it up.
ROBBY P: As usual, another excellent job! By modeling '87-'93, I just don't have as many opportunities to rust-out my stuff like you do. When I do, it's generally the result of "I shoulda stopped a few layers ago..."
ULRICH: How ya doing Pal? Hope things are looking at least a bit better for you since I last seen you in here.
I know I'm missing a lot of the others who have been in here the past few days... not trying to ignore/omit anybody, especially anybody having a rough go of it. I just flat-out can't keep track of everything. Like the local daily paper used to say: "miss a day, miss a lot." Best wishes to all in need, and a good night/morning to all...

Good morning. It's 74 and partly cloudy. The high will be in the high 80's and there's a chance of rain.Had some thunderstorms blow through the area yesterday but no rain to speak of. Good Morning
Gonna get a bunch of rain today--something like 1.5" worth. We had to cancel out the run tomorrow out of town becase of that and an issue with his car. And I now have headlights again---after spending over $150 on the dang things---so much for the MR budget
Gonna get some scenery built up on Eric's layout though---need to build up the valley so the trestle will have SOMETHNG to rest on when done

Good morning, Coffee and two eggs scrambled, hash browns , bacon, grits, and toast please. Big day today, the church chicken fry, yeah. I hope it goes well. It's indoors of course, but the weather is calling for a 60% chance of showers and T-storms with a high of 72 F. Currently its 68 with 94% humidity. Boy it was sticky yesterday I even turned the air on in the truck. Big news is I went to my Castle Trains and picked up some weathering powders. Yup shore did. A.I.M. mixture pack for 30 bucks ( Tom behind the counter says he loves the brand). We'll see how that goes.
Chris- Nope. He walk out on his own. Of course none of the folks who live/lived in the affected area were there........ I have the same problem of I shoulda stopped layers ago. I'm trying my hand at an old TYCO high cube from yars agooo. I'm going slow and at each point I'm stopping and coming back say a day later and looking at it again then dulcote and work on next. Hopefully that will give improved results. Of course a baseball bat would give improved results. My plan was to take pictures of it as I went along to get Robby's opinion, and others too of course, of how it was going but the boy HASN'T BROUGHT BACK THE CHARGER FOR THE CAMERA YET!!! (I told her not to loan him anything that you might want back sometime. But did she listen to me? Nooooooo.)
Barry- I know what you mean on the RR budget busters. (Pesky house payment). I usually wait til the end of the month after the bills are paid and before "payday" to figure how much I can spend. Walk into the place and they say "HEY! Great! You had some money left over!" Not after this. (snicker)
Sawyer- ah HA! I knew the war wasn't over!
I best get a move on. Chicken cookin' time'll be here afore ya know it. (cluck, cluck, crack, pluck, pluck, chop, chop, chop, sizzle )
Have a Great Day!!!
Good morning. Seems like we might get some rain today.
Well the boxcar I just did, is sold. Thats pretty fast. That makes about $220-250 in about a week and a half. Time to order some more.
Jim........I have a lot of repeat buyers, and I've had some new ones also. A new person bought the boxcar I just posted. I have some people that buy cars from me, that depends on what the car is ( CSX, tankers, etc). Thats the only time they buy.
Chris....I use to not weather my cars until I thought I would try it. Now the layout looks 100% better. The problem is I keep selling my cars. If I sell a car for $60......I buy two to weather/sell and one for myself/bills/taxes.. So far that's working out.
Well I gotta run to the bank, and look for some new cars to weather. Everybody have a good morning.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Coffee in a large SOGGY SOUTHERN mug, please.
Woke up at 4:30am after little sleep and never could get back to sleep. Ugh! Going to be a long day.
Raining heavy presently with more on the way. It's a real mud fest out there.
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, how bout a short stack of blueberry pancakes and some NYS Maple Syrup to go along with it. Oh and yes, I'd like a cup of dark roast in a FGLK Mug please and thank you!
I'll be at the rivet counter for a bit.
Sun is out for the moment here in the Finger Lakes but won't be lasting long as Barry is sending some "liquid sunshine" aka: "heavy dew" over my way today. Talking about a half an inch tonight of the stuff.
I should get busy splitting and stacking what little firewood I have so far. May have to buy some this year. Haven't had a lot of time to hunt around for wood this summer. Got part of a large Maple tree last spring and it has been sitting ever since then in one of my driveways. Unfortunately that will only amout to less than 2 face cords and since I need about 10 face cords...........
Hope all have a good day!

My application for social security payments has not yet been approved, instead they came back to me with a list of questions I had already answered three weeks ago. We don´t even have the money to buy a roll any more and have to rely on neighbors to feed us - I feel so ashamed and embarrassed. Tried to sell my car, but due to the government granting you 2,500 Euros when you scrap your car and buy a new one, it has no value at all anymore. My wife´s jewelery, my watches and whatever we could turn into money is long gone by now.
Guys, don´t be mad at me if I will not be around in this forum any longer. You all have to bear your own burden and I just don´t want to top that with the problems I have to fight with.
It´s been a good time with you all!
Morning folks! tired...not much sleep last night.
Thank you all for the wonderful caring messages, and your thoughts and prayers for our little Kitty!
Yesterday afternoon and evening were rough, and reading all the responses this morning from you all is touching and much appreciated! Thank you all so much!
Kitty really did have 9 Lives! Little Miss Kitty was born in Jackson, MS where we got her from one of my waiters, Jeff Wurshmitt who had gotten her from one of my waitresses that had a litter back around the fall of 1996. I was an assistant manager at the time at Cuco's Mexican Restaurant. Jeff was 16 and could not take care of her so he offered for us to take her. At the time Ben was just a year old and Kitty always slept with him, she slept with him until just a few days ago. After a year in Jackson, MS we moved back to New Orleans and she moved with us. Then in 2005 Katrina hit and she survived that with us and the 3+ weeks living in a 1-room hotel. Then she survived the car accident with Monique on the move to NC. Once we moved here she ran off for the first 3 days and finally returned very hungry and stayed inside most of the time thereafter. Her passing affected me more than I thought, especially when I made the call yesterday afternoon to tell Monique, I broke down about a half dozen times.

I just got internet service back. Shortly after I shut down prior to the approaching thunderstorms a lightning bolt hit the cable several miles from here and took out a whole series of boosters. As a result cable service was out for almost 10 hours. Haven't gotten much layout work done today as I was busy recording a bunch of programs from the DVR onto VHS tapes. One of these days I may break down and get a DVD recorder but they're going to have to get lower in price.

Afternoon all from HotCloudyHumidCal:
Yup. Humid. As in YECCH! We don't get humid very much out here in the PollenValley, but when we do, it's a Doozer! This has been caused by those yearly southern rainstorms coming UP from Mexico through Arizona and Nevada and heading west, thank you very much. No rain, but just clouds hanging over the valley trapping the high pressure. It's that time of year when we get to feel like Louisiana, LOL! (sorry 'bout that, Jeff ).
Anyway, it's supposed to go away this weekend so we can just be hot and dry again. Whoopee!
Well, the first two days of instruction are over at Jesuit. Got to meet and re-meet the four choirs I'll be working with. Hug-time and back-slapping with 'my guys', and introductions to the new (and scared) freshmen. Leah and I took stock, I think it's going to be a good year. It's great to be back. But after two days, I'm EXHAUSTED!! Have to get back into the swing of things, so to speak.
We instituted a 'new' rule, no IPODS or Blackberry's in the classroom--they go in the backpacks BEFORE you enter and stay there until after class. I told the class that any that I discover are MINE forever, and that Doc White is really HOT to get a free collection this year. One of my favorite Jocks --and a terrific student named Ryan Werking--just stared at me and said, "Are you Bad Cop this year, Doc?" "You betcha, Ryan." "Is this negotiable?" he asked. "No. Why? Are you planning trouble?" I grinned. He grinned back, "It's in my Contract, Doc." We both laughed like crazy. It's gonna be a GOOD year!! He's actually a sweetheart, and one Heckuva baritone. I hope he runs for President when he's old enough.
Ryan: I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. As a lifelong cat lover and current owner of two big furry felines, I know what a jolt losing one is. They're a member of the family. If you don't mind a bit of advice, spend a little time mourning, then get another one. It's what I did when I lost my big furry Maine Coon buddy Lowell, last year from kidney failure. I waited a little, got another big furry fellah from a rescue society, and "Uff-Dah" (he's a Norwegian Forest Cat) has turned out to be his own type of unique furry goofball. Cats are like that. I've never met two the same. But do yourself a favor, wait a little while and then go down to the local ASPCA. You'll end up rescuing a cat that's just waiting to come and run your household, believe me.
Garry: Prayers that Little Kitty will continue to thrive. As a Franciscan Catholic, I am a firm believer that all of God's creatures are put here for a purpose.
Well, I got Deer Creek Yard re-laid completely (finally!). Been doing some switching there with my new Peco's, and they work just fine. However the yard itself looks like the aftermath of a WWII bombing run. I had to scrape and vacuum all of the ballast and scrape and clean all of the track that I pulled up. Right now it looks nice and shiny and raw. Hopefully this weekend I'll do some re-ballasting. But the next time I lay out a railyard, will SOMEONE remind me to use sheet cork instead of the WS foam pads? They're great on the mainline, but hoo boy, when it comes to yard-work, we're talking SPONGY, LOL!
Well, got to get the music ready for tomorrow's Vesper Mass--still to muggy to venture out into the garage and work on the trains. Hopefully later tonight. Supposed to be a Delta Breeze (yah, SURE!).
Best to all, prayers to those in need.

C'mon guys! I'm sure that our wonderful diner staff would rather us NOT throw cakes around. I'll have a RBF over here in the window booth, gotta little studying to do. Got a friend of mine who is going to be taking me up tomorrow (yes, up, flying), and I know that I'm a little rusty on the emergency procedures for the Cessna 172, so I'm brushing up tonight. My friend is the type that isn't afraid to be flying along fat and happy and then pull the mixture out on you and make you practice loosing your engine in flight and making an "improvised field landing". Oh well, beats what I was going to do, which was nothing.
Well, sounds like dinner is just about ready on my side of the world, so I'll be off and enjoy some pork chops on the grill, fresh peas (from mom and dad's garden), little bit of friend eggplant and squash, with some potato salad. Yum! Yum! I'll be back in later y'all.
Finally got a chance to do some work on the layout. Moved a couple of structures around and added some clouds.
G'dEvening, Chloe, just a Santa Fe mug of decaf, please. Thanks.

And Rob - would that ROTFLMBO be "... Laughing My BACK Off"?
Todd - have you thought that another use for that baseball bat might be to...uh,... encourage your son to bring the charger back? (Did I just say that out loud? Oh no! ). Just kidding (I think..) If you have the model number needed to get a replacement one, you could do that and send him a copy of the bill (not that you'd expect to see payment any sooner than the charger has been in coming back...). Ah, kids, right?
Robby, sounds like the weathering is worthwhile for you (in spite of the 'Bay's fees...). How's your layout's progress coming along, by the way?
Ulrich - please do NOT stop coming in here for fear that you might drag us down. We'd rather be able to encourage you some, pray for you and know how you're doing (and what else to include in our prayers), rather than just wonder how you are. You're our friend, and we ain't gonna lock you out of the Diner - no way, no how, no time! (And I doubt that I am only speaking for myself there)
Ryan, good to hear that the posts are helpful for you, and sounds like Kitty had a long and great life with the Boudreaux family.
I see that Garry is up to his usual 'tricks' again, eh? And what model of loco would that perchance be, Duke?
Hey, Calif.Tom - pace yourself, you don't want to wear out before Christmas! Your Jock sounds like a fun one to have in class.
Now, Bama, no fair - stopping by long enough to tantalize our appetites with the yummy stuff you're gonna have for dinner and leaving! Didn't your teachers tell you that you have to bring enough for everybody? Oh yeah - happy flying tomorrow!
You fellas up north of me - Todd, Inch, Jerry (and later, you all in Ohio and Indiana) - watch out, I saw the track of this cold front that's coming slowly east (and quickly running north up the front) with some rain. We got our turn about mid-day today, so it's probably reaching you now, and will reach the Ohio Valley tonight or in the morning.
Got laundry done and I'm ready for on-call tomorrow. High spot of the day was getting emails from two dear female friends of mine. One I've known for 40+ years, and she may be swinging by here over Labor Day weekend (she's visiting a friend in the prison at Ina (?) and figured while she was down part way near Cape G....). The other email was from my friend Linda (dealing with some health problems), and it sounded like she may not have quite as many as she/her doctors first thought she did. She got back from visiting her first grandbaby in the middle of Texas (really little town). I'll have to see about calling her Sunday afternoon, I think and catch up. She has carpal tunnel, among other things, so typing emails is a major issue for her, so I was pleasantly amazed at how much she wrote(!).
I'll have a refill on my coffee, please, Chloe, and then I'll be heading home. Tomorrow, I hope to get some more re-w**king of the track on my layout started (maybe even done), depending on how busy my on-call does(n't?) keep me.
Prayers for all of you Diners (I noticed that my prayer list is getting fairly long, between all of you and my church friends and other friends), and especially for those needing healing of body, mind and/or spirit, for yourself/loved ones. Know that you're all special to me (no, Garry, that's not Special K...).
Blessings for you and yours,
