Sign - Off Topic!!

Though this says it's from the Dallas Morning News, I don't know that for sure.

From my long-time friend Marj, for those who are in their 40's, may get to be in their 40's, or fondly remember their 40's...

[Edit] ...and it looks like you get dinner on me, to go with the story...

Dallas Morning News

David McClure of McKinney : A senior moment ... at 48?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

David McClure teaches science and coaches at Faubion
Middle School in McKinney . He is also a Teacher
Voices volunteer columnist.

"$5.37."

That's what the kid behind the counter at Taco Bueno said to me.
I dug into my pocket and pulled out some lint and two dimes and
something that used to be a Jolly Rancher.

Having already handed the kid a five-spot, I started to head back
out to the truck to grab some change when the kid with the Emo
hairdo said the harshest thing anyone has ever said to me.

He said, "It's OK. I'll just give you the senior citizen discount."

I turned to see who he was talking to and then heard the sound
of change hitting the counter in front of me.

"Only $4.68" he said cheerfully.

I stood there stupefied. I am 48, not even 50 yet a mere child!
Senior citizen? I took my burrito and walked out to the truck,
wondering what was wrong with Emo. Was he blind?

As I sat in the truck, my blood began to boil. Old? Me?
I'll show him, I thought. I opened the door and
headed back inside. I strode to the counter, and there
he was waiting with a smile. Before I could say a word,
he held up something and jingled it in front of me, like
I could be that easily distracted! What am I now? A toddler?

"Dude! Can't get too far without your car keys, eh?"

I stared with utter disdain at the keys. I began to
rationalize in my mind. "Leaving keys behind
hardly makes a man elderly! It could happen
to anyone!" I turned and headed back to the truck.

I slipped the key into the ignition, but it wouldn't turn.
What now? I checked my keys and tried another. Still
nothing. That's when I noticed the purple beads
hanging from my rearview mirror. I had no purple
beads hanging from my rearview mirror. Then, a few
other objects came into focus: The car-seat in the
back seat; Happy Meal toys spread all over the
floorboard, a partially eaten doughnut on the
dashboard. Faster than you can say ginkgo biloba,
I flew out of the alien vehicle.

Moments later I was speeding out of the parking lot,
relieved to finally be leaving this nightmarish stop
in my life. That is when I felt it, deep in the bowels of my stomach:
Hunger! My stomach growled and churned, and I reached
to grab my burrito, only it was nowhere to be found. I swung
the truck around, gathered my courage, and strode back
into the restaurant one final time. There Emo stood,
draped in youth and black nail polish.

All I could think was, "What is the world coming to?"
All I could say was, "Did I leave my food and drink in here?"
At this point I was ready to ask a Boy Scout to help me back
to my vehicle, and then go straight home and apply for Social
Security benefits. Emo had no clue.

I walked back out to the truck, and suddenly a young lad
came up and tugged on my jeans to get my attention. He
was holding up a drink and a bag. His mother explained,
"I think you left this in my truck by mistake." I took the food
and drink from the little boy and sheepishly apologized.
She offered these kind words:

"It's OK. My grandfather does stuff like this all the time."

All of this is to explain how I got a ticket doing 85 in a 40 mph zone.
Yes, I was racing some punk kid in a Toyota Prius. And no, I told the
officer, I'm not too old to be driving this fast. As I walked in the front
door, my wife met me halfway down the hall. I handed her a bag
of cold food and a $300 speeding ticket. I promptly sat in my
rocking chair and covered up my legs with a blanky.
The good news was I had successfully found my way home.

Ohmigosh! Shock Todd, you mean, your son brought the charger back? Flo, better bring me the smelling salts, I think I'm about to keel over....Laugh

Um, no not exactly brought it back. He left it at his grandma's house in Springfield when he was there. So I'm relieved it wasn't too much trouble for him to return it as he lives in Springfield also. Nice, borrow something then tell them they can drive 25 miles (round trip but still....) to get it back. Hey, at least she got it back and it still worked. I checked on replacing it because I figured he'd destroy it and then proceed to tell how it wasn't his fault, it was junk etc therefore he doesn't have to replace it. A charger cost $50!!!!!!!!  Part 2 of story I just learned over an absolutely delicious chicken pot pie. Turns out she got it back Thursday night and charged the battery yesterday to see if it worked I guess before telling me. She knew what I'd say, I'm sure, if it didn't work. She nonchalantly mentioned, "I've had it for a while. I got it from Mom's the last time I was over there. I charged the battery. It's ready to go." I said "you mean day before yesterday." "yeah I guess" " I hope he wasn't to put out." Then, a little smart dude on my shoulder told me to change the subject before I crossed THAT line. " This pot pie is delicious" she smiled and I live.

Since Jim polished off the Ribs I brought in some pot pie. Sorry you'll have to add your own hot sauce. Spicy is not her bag man.

I thought Chillin' was like kickin' back and relaxing. Hm. I guess my kids got away with more than I thought.Grumpy

Day, night, wet, dry, light, dark, space the final frontier. New digs again, do we need to upgrade from the 44 tonner? Been beavering away in the house doing the staining and sealing plus the punch list from the first walkthrough by the building inspector. Silly stuff is all we needed like a railing for the porch railing (really) and elimanation of gaps more than 4" between steps outside (of course code mandates 7" between steps) but you get the drift.)  Not too far away from getting a CO (certificate of occupancy for those of you not familiar with legalese) so we can move back into our house. Did a hill climb last weekend but other than that it's been either the shop or the house for me. No video this year as we tried a new camera that didn't work out but I ended up second overall with my Lotus 7. The advantage of a hill climb is that the CFO and I were able to take care of 4 other cars and I still got to run mine.

Oh yeah trains? I did end up communing with the remnants of my layout while rifling through the storage shed (future site of the next layout). And I need to do some research on Hoosic Falls, NY as there is a great sectio of track through there including a fairly busy section of bridge over a river. Very scenic and the overall effect is one of a branch line that would be doable on a layout without too much agita.

Think I'll take my RBF to a back booth and hang for a while.   J.R.

 Milk, Chloe.

just stopping in for a quick drink. Found out that my family might be running the church's games for the harvest festival. Needless to say, the game section was slowly going downhill. They used a ticket system in which, in the hands of a two year old,  one game ticket can yield five tickets, and a med. prize was five tickets. With new-found knowledge from the benefit, (Which by the way we raised $14,800 for my cousin) We might be able to overhaul this carnival.

See yall!

No problem!

How To Copy and Paste:
Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty box below, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text. :-)

 Good morning.

It's 72 and foggy. The high will be around 90 and there's a chance of rain.

I busied myself yesterday moving some structures around, doing some work on the structure lighting and making clouds above the new background. The stencils certainly make it easier to make convincing clouds. On the structure movements, the lumber mill that was next to the north engine house is now at the back of the layout. A freight station is now next to the north engine house. The foundry has been moved back to it's position near the north engine house. The spot previously occupied by the foundry is now occupied by the Seymour Block, the Ace Hardware building and the machine shop.

Today's Weather for:
Sundown, LA  71446-6114      8/30/2009

Heat Index:  77°F
Humidity:  98%
Dew Point:  71°F

So Far Today
High:  75°F
Low:  72°F
Rain:  0.00"
Rain Rate:  0.00"/h
Gust:  3mph W

Through 9 AM...scattered showers and thunderstorms moving south out of northern Louisiana will spread into western portions of central Louisiana by 9 AM.

Today  High: 92    A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the lower 90s. North winds around 5 mph.

Tonight  Low: 68    Lows in the upper 60s. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph.

Mornin, just popped in before Church. Sunny and a high of 69 F today right now it's 57.

I was playing with the camera last night to try and get it to take some decent pictures of small stuff. I just couldn't get it to do it. After who knows how many pictures these were the best two believe it or not. This is why I prefer an SLR camera.

I have so much trouble focusing on something small such as my still with an auto focus non SLR or whatever they are called. It always focuses on something else in the photo and in that little view screen they all look out of fucus or dark or something. If I  look through the view finder then of course the picture isn't centered with the lense and all. I guess I just won't take pictures until I can get a decent camera or figure this one out. That and the fact the instructions are no longer findable.

I need to get rid of that red wall. It would probably help with the picture color also

Have a Great Day!

Mornin' everyone!

Chloe I'll have the #2 Special this morning.  Over easy on the eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of Sourdough toast if you please.  I'll go sit in the front booth and see what's going on out there today.

Todd, is that the Woodland Scenics Still?  That is a fun little project.  I have one stuck up on the hillside on my layout.

Jeffrey your clouds are looking very nice!

Lee you will enjoy your electric bills after getting the energy star.  The difference for me upgrading from a 20 year old fridge a year and a half ago is about 80 KWs per month.  Saves me about $11 a month.

Barry, please keep your 60% over where you are, we have the other 40% here today.  Don't need any more. Wink

It is a pleasant 65°F here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  That is also the high for the day.  Air conditioners remain off!Whistling  The sun is shining though.....  No, now it is clouldy.....  Oh there is the sun.  Opps!  There was the sun....  Looks like we may get some of the 40% I mentioned earlier.

I have a couple layout projects going on, so I'll finish breakfast and be on my way.  Hope you all have a blessed day!

I was looking for my Photo Impressions software so I could reinstall it but couldn't find it. It came with a little digital camera I bought years ago. SO while I was in town today I stopped off at Walgreen's and picked up one of those little digital cameras tthat hey still sell for $10. It has a software CD that's worth quite a few times that and it includes Photo Impressions 4.

Besides, isn't Vinnie still mad at me?

Nah, Flip, he's been keeping a close eye on Todd after Chloe took a frying pan to Todd's head a few weeks back. You should  be safe, but just in case, sit a couple of booths away from the Rivet Counter so you won't get blamed for (ahem...) someone else's pranks. Wink Are you still stuck with those 'split shifts' you had before, where they give you a couple/three hours off between your morning runs and the afternoon ones? I recall you weren't very fond of those shifts, right?

Ah, I see PC's giving 'puter tutorials for everybody now... Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jeff - on those clouds, I'm guessing you make the areas heavier by staying in that area (spraying longer in a spot). Or do you spray closer? Looks good, however you did it. Yeah!!

JR, hope you get to move in SOON(!). I guess you could console yourself that you're doing your part to stimulate the economy in your area, eh? Good that you and the layout stuff had a nice talk at the shed (instead of behind the shed...) Wink

Todd, I like your little still - cute! Thumbs Up Does your camera have the capability to hold the shutter button halfway down when you focus on the key part of the picture, and then shift the view/crop and then press the button the rest of the way down to take the photo? At least, that's kinda the way mine does. Oh, you're probably right about the red background area. I would get that still kit, except that in the Southwest, that many trees would look kinda funny (and maybe attract the revenooers...Oops). Maybe I can have one hidden up behind some rocks or such...Hmmm....

Mark, nice axe! The bigger view doesn't seem to be w**king for me, but I can see the smaller one fine.

Jerry, the Cardinals have been getting it going for a bit (finally) - they were nine games ahead yesterday, I think it was. Maybe they might do some good this year!

For those of you east of the Midwest, hang on and you should be getting some better weather soon. Our weather here in S.E. Missouri was excellent today - only got to about 76F (24 C), and humidity has been only mid 40's on the percent. Yeah!! I turned off the A/C, opened up windows and just ran my fans to circulate the air. Cool

On the MRR front, I started re-doing the track. Partly stuck on two counts - first, couldn't find my NMRA gauge, and also couldn't find my rail cutters (though I could find my flush cutters I use for cutting plastic...). I also was looking to re-do the turnouts on the right front side to eliminate an S-curve there (for the mainline and passing siding especially). But I may have to do a lot of fiddlin' with the track. My mainline after the turnout is nice and straight, but the passing siding needs to be moved, which means the tracks going off it needs moving, and the sidings that go off of them, and....) You know,...Banged Head Thought I'd take a break from w**king on the track until I locate my track gauge and find or get another of the rail cutters. Ah, well..

May head back home now; I have some paperw**k still to do, and then I might put together some Accurail boxcar kits (MoPac, MKT and Wabash). Gee, wonder where I'll have room for those once I get them together?Maybe I'd better get the rail cutters and gauge found first...

Hope everyone has a pleasant evening of weather in your area. Prayers continue.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Jeff - on those clouds, I'm guessing you make the areas heavier by staying in that area (spraying longer in a spot). Or do you spray closer? Looks good, however you did it. Yeah!!

I just spray a little longer in those spots. I get the fuzzy edge by holding the stencil 1/2 inch away from the back drop while spraying from 10 inches away.

A Jug-O-Dew with steak, Zoe.

Dad taught me how to use the finishing mower on the big tractor today. And then guess who had to mow the 5+ acre field and pond?

I'll sit down and watch the Camelback triple header that is now pounding by with a coal drag and eat.

See yall!

Sounds like you had as much fun as I have mowing my parent's 5+ acre yard.

Evenin' all. Dr Pepper float please. Well, plans change. Got out of church and went visiting with the couple who moved into the parsonage after the storm. Got home at high noon and Brenda said "we" need to go to town. I didn't question, been there done that. Just got back. My afternoon of Railroading was given the boot. I still have time I guess, I could get down there yet tonight.

Ray- Yes it's the Woodland Scenics Still. I enjoyed putting it together and am disappointed with the camera pictures because it is the best weathering I've done and, hopefully not sounding puffed up, I am proud of the way it turned outApprove. I actually did quit good with the coloration of the barrels and not that bad on the tree trunks if I do say so myself, but you can't tell in the picturesSad. I must go to your album and see if I can find yours. Gives me an excuse to oogle at your layout !!!!Big Smile

Jerry- I remember well The hillbilly with the bullet going through the brim of his hat. Ya Hoo I sure do! Wait, does that make us old. Probably the Grandpa Jones song does. I remember that too. I'm glad to hear you got the tire fixed. I hope it holds til you get the new chair. What's Sallie gonna do?

Flip- (chuckle) Yeah like Jim said you oughta be alright for a bit til Vinnie forgets about me. I had a spell there when I was his focal point.

Jim- Yes the camera does have the half way down thing. The problem is, I can't really tell what it looks like. Darn eyes. I don't seem to have a problem looking through the viewfinder (played with one at Sam's club) but that little screen....Blindfold. The Pentax K2000 that I'm looking at when funds are available does not, apparently, have a live LCD screen. Sounds like you can only view what you've already shot. That works just as well for me because I can't see it well anyway. I haven't actually touched one yet as Best Buy seems to be the only place near that carries them. I need to see one first to be sure. Which reminds me, I'd best pass on the NMRA gage pictures for a bit. I doubt if you could make out the point things and besides, to be honest, I'm not sure myself on some of the things with the switches (which more than likely is the same things you‘re confused on).

Barry- Glad the BBQ went well. Our "abundant sunshine" was about 43 and one half seconds worth. Looked like it could rain most of the day. But, it didn't. Like Jerry said, it felt like fall all day.

Well I think I'll head downstairs for a bit. First, I gotta write this down. Hold cloud stencil a couple inches from wall. OK got it.Thumbs Up
