Hello everyone...
I've been away from computers a few days while in Alabama for my Mom's 90th b'day celebration. I'll catch up on your posts later. We arrived at home at about 1:00 am last night.
The party was lovely. My Mom still plays the piano. Sadly we are dealing with a tough situation that sometimes happens with the elderly. My Mom has been scammed out of huge sums of money. We stayed in Alabama an extra day so I could meet along with my sister with police and lawyers. This is quite an emotional experience.
Meanwhile, we learned our church friend, Diane, the cancer patient, is worse off. She was moved to a hospice in Nashville. We're sad about that.
Thanks to those who extended well wishes to Shelley for "the bite". The treatment is working and it is healing.
No news from me about my model railroad.

I just finished with the parent's yard. That took nearly 4 hours and it's not quite finished yet. I have to go back and sweep some clippings away from the drains. I'm waiting for the clippings to dry out first. It's much easier to get rid of them then. My sister's mower is still not fixed. No surprise there.

pcarrellUlrich, That plan looks like a good one. The carfloat can act as off layout staging, and the plan is tight enough to cause you to think out your moves, but not so tight that it's unworkable. Is that an actual prototype track arrangement, or something you came up with?
Ulrich,

Philip - I would not want to call it prototype track, it follows the general orientation of ARR´s Whittier facilities. The track plan is a summary of some ideas which had different "fathers", starting from Bob Smaus "Port of Los Angeles" of 1990´s and going to Stein (steinjr) of 2009, with whom I had an intense dialogue on planning a shelf layout earlier this year. The car float is supposed to act as a staging yard, and I plan to make it removable to simulate the arrival/departure of floats, allowing to" work" different trains.
I hope it will not only remain a dream...
Well..... Mornin' everyone!
What is that noise??? Somebody running a chainsaw outside? What? Oh, that's Jim sleeping? Holy Mackerel! he rattles louder than I do! (Of course when I get that loud, I ussually wake up and say, "What was that?"
Flo, I'll have a bran muffin with real butter and a cup of dark roast in a FGLK mug. Thank you! I'll be at the Rivet Counter.
Currently 72°F but going up to 85°F later today. It has been alternating between sunny and cloudy all morning.
Need to finish the lawn this morning while it is cool and then go up to the County Hysterical Society and do a bit of research on street signs back in 1925...... If time permits, I will also go to a Mac Store not too far from there and get a copy of OSX.5 while they still have them for my old G5 computer. The new OS coming out in just a few days is for Pentium powered Macs only. Since there are no more updates for OSX.3 and it is now not able to use such things as the latest version of Firefox and several other apps, I think the time has come. I like the desktop models better than the laptops for daily use, and I don't want to shell out right now for a MacPro.... So I best upgrade the OS.
Have a great day!

[edit] Looks like lunch will on me today.... (Hope I have enough room on the credit card for that upgrade I just mentioned when some of you get done ordering....)

***Bama, were you digging through briars looking for model tree making materials perhaps? Ouch!
***Paul, sounds like you just got a rare lemon and not a typical Case. Is that a 4 wheel drive with 80hp? I'll bet Case International service is WAY better than JD's. I wouldn't trust JD repair folks to replace a tire, let alone actually work on any other part of the tractor. If you can't tell, I've had nothing but BAD experiences with them. That being said, the original JD product is excellent.IMO
Busy day ahead. Hope to have time to work on one of the idle projects laying around here by this evening.
Have a good day y'all.

Good morning...Its sunny and 73 here..I'll have coffee and a sweet roll please...Thank You....I am getting ready to go to Dr. this afternoon..I have to have a face to face with Him before I can get My new power chair..Just about wasn't able to make it I got in chair about 7:30 last nite and bump bump bump..I thought the axle had broke again but checked it out and I had a flat tire..I have been using this chair for over 6 years and had never had a flat tire [5 or 6 sets of new tires]..Didn't sleep well called guy at new tire shop here in town He came up took old tire off checked it couldn't find anything wrong with it put in back on I am watching it close!! Sallie left at 8 this morning for MRI on Her hip she is in lots of pain hope to find out why..Not gonna find much time to work on trains today...You all have a good one..Jerry
Hi,
crazy day so far - overcast, hot and humid. Planned to w**k in the garden and do useless things like cutting the grass, but fortunately it started to drizzle - phew, that was a close one! No need to argue with SWMBO about not working in the yard...
Zoe, I am hungry - I´ll take that Switchman´s Nightmare Plate and a beer!
PC - hope your daughter will be ok! Keep my fingers crossed...
Jim - your yawning is contageous , all of a sudden, I feel tired from doing nothing today!
A good one!
G'Morning, mmmph? Oh yeah, Zoe, coffee and a chocolate donut, and possibly a coffee IV drip. SHORT on sleep - total of 3 hours (1 hour initially, then called out to most outlying jail in our area of coverage, then about 2 hours sleep after I got back. Snooze alarm just barely got me up... must keep moving or I'll zzzzzzzzzz...... - and I was the *backup* for last night -sheesh!
I'll just doze off at the RC heremffffff..... Zoe, wake me up when it's time to go home. Okay, thanks, sweetie,....

Mornin' all!
Well, I was going to take my daughter to school today, but she was up sick most of the night. I was up with her, so I'm draggin' butt today. My wife is taking her to the doctor later. We'll get her all checked out. It's funny, 'cause she was up and moving around yesterday evening..........
LSWrrPaul, I painted the walls flat white (KILLZ) and I have two 100w compact florescent bulbs in the room. The problem with the main train room is the dark knotty pine panels; they give the room a tint of brown look even with three 100w compact fluorescents in the ceiling. I didn’t do anything with the ceiling in the “new” room because the furnace and hot water tank are right there. I also have dampeners in all of my furnace vents that allow me to zone the house and I wanted to maintain access to those. The PRR pellet terminal is over flowing with taconite. The dock serves the Cleveland area and the steel mills in Pittsburg, but the fleets of hoppers have yet to arrive so I really don’t know when they plan to start shipping it out.
Lee: I remember a fellow actually used a few cotton panels to hide his pine walls---actually worked enough that the brown shade he had in the room lightened considerably. The area that I have established in the basement has a similar kind of issue in that there is a corner that is showing up darker than the others---and thats with those lights----I'm getting some panels to see how that'll work. As for the mills---good to see that getting active again

Gooooooooooood morning. Just got off of work, and I need to change. I thought I would stop in here first.
Sold my CSX hopper I just did. So far my plan is still working. I might have two more cars today but sure tomorrow to do. A B&O (chessie 2-bay hopper, and a boxcar "forgot the name"). I also worked on the layout some yesterday. Laid some track on the upper part. Just a test run. I will work on it some more today.
Ulrich...Just keep your head up. We were at the bottom, but slowly working back up. It takes time, why.....I don't know. Sometimes it takes to long!!
Barry.....I believe your "spring", and my "hannibal" are long lost cousin's. He parks himself in front of the fridge while we are cooking. After that he parks himself under you. Trying to get some crumbs.
I guess I better go get cleaned up. Talk to everybody later.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Morning folks!
I'll have the Eggs Cocotte for breakfast this morning with the cheese grits. Of course with some of Ed's fresh OJ and a large cup a Joe in my Southern mug. Thanks Chloe!
Ben started his first day of high school this morning! Good luck Ben!
Took our cat Kitty to the vet last night, been having intestinal issues for a few weeks, leaving nice little packages all over the house, and some with blood. This morning was no different and hopefully the blood work will come back and the vet can give her some meds to fix the issue, still not sure what is going on at the moment other than possibly constipation. Hope she gets better soon.
Nice to see Fergie in the Diner again, and congrats too!

Nice looking track plan Ulrich. I'm a continuous run man myself. My last N Scale layout was 3x5 and was in the front right corner of a 1971 Dodge 20' Pace Arrow motor home.
Good morning. It's 73 and cloudy. The high will be in the low 90's and it will be partly cloudy.Got some clouds made yesterday and hope to get more made today. I have 8 homemade stencils to use for the job so I can mix them up if I want. Still shifting structures around a bit trying to find the right balance. It might be easier if it was a residential area. As it is it's a small industrial area with some small businesses and few residences outside of a couple of small hotels. Yesterday I sorted through my boxcars on the layout and removed any that don't fit the late 70's - post 70's. No roofwalks, high ladders, high brake wheels (alldoor cars excluded as tyhey have two, one high and one low) with the exception of MoW cars. In all, 14 boxcars are being dropped and will go into the storage container under the layout.Today's Weather for:Sundown, LA 71446-6114 8/25/2009Heat Index: 77°FHumidity: 67%Dew Point: 62°FSo Far TodayHigh: 73°FLow: 73°FRain: 0.00"Rain Rate: 0.00"/hGust: 6mph NNEToday High: 92 Partly cloudy. Good Morning, everyone!
For most of you, it is in the middle of the night...
Zoe, I need a shot of caffeine to get my eyes open - and a bowl of muesli to taste while I wait for the others to wake up and drop by.
The night was not good at all, I keep on having these anxiety attacks the moment I lay down to rest. It will probably change the moment we get kicked out of our house. When we have reached the bottom (which we apparently don´t have yet), then the only way is up again - hopefully.
blownout cylinderI'm having a piculous cat trying to open the fridge to get at the corn--LOL!!

Barry - when my days as an exchange student were coming to an end, the family I stayed with got a cute little baby tom cat. The little one always sat in front of the refridgerator waiting for someone to open it and get him a goodie. As they had observed this behaviour also with me, they named him
Uli Koolschrank (Refridgerator)
I felt honored
As we will have to move into a little flat, I guess my days as an HO scale model railroader are over. I need to take a closer look into N scale - maybe it´s possible to find a little corner to squeeze in this (provided there will be funds for this transportation project):
Have a good day, all of you!
Here's one for the "It takes all kinds" book. I just got back from the Village Board meeting. I'll spare all the details (sigh of relief comes over the room), but this transplant comes in late, right in the middle of some vote, and waves to the Mayor who nods and smiles to him. This he took as a que to begin stating his purpose. Now this guy and his wife and dogs live in the ONLY house on Lester street that wasn't dstroyed or severely damaged. In fact I believe his house didn't suffer at all, just his garage. Anyway he begins requesting, after describing where he lives and the people around him, that the village close the streets again to all, other than those who live there, because when he moved in in May the area was quiet with little traffic. Now there are cars and trucks all the time stirring up dust and driving his DOGS nuts with all the activity. Also he would like the village to hose down the streets to keep the dust down because it's awful dusty there with all the stuff laying around from the storm and it LOOKS REALLY BAD. The mayor was polite and said he'd look into what could be done. Most in the room were speechless.
Barry- sounds kinda corny at your place. You could bring some in here.
Jim- Ah ha! that explains it. Thank you very much. I don't know why it bothered me but somethings I just want to know. Oh and I can hear JRJ saying "Use the power wisely diners"
Paul- we had a Case IH dealer in nearby Greenview that was great like you described. Unfortunately he retired and the business closed about 2 or 3 years ago. Too bad.
Ray- You know if you were handy with tools you could have made a paint booth by just getting some....Oh I can't keep a straight face.

In order to keep my position as Master and Supreme Ruler of the House, I don't argue with my wife.
I'm a small town boy. A product of two people from even smaller towns. I don’t talk on topic….. I just talk.
Evening, Chloe - just a cup of hot cocoa, please, and might make that one to go, just in case. Thanks!
Ray - good self-restraint on NOT drop-kicking your 'volunteer' (which I'd say remains to be proven, kind of like Louisiana law - guilty until proven innocent...) off the train!
Chris, I like your w**k on the freight cars, but the loco... seems like something's missing there... But as you said, at least these ones are right-side up.
Jeff - I like that first cloud better (soften that left edge, love the right side and middle). Would it help your week for you to do your parents' yard now, and get the sister's later in the week if/when the nephew gets off his, uh... 'beast of burden'? Or will it not be until the end of the week before your parents' yard is ready to mow?
Our MRR club - kinda like you were doing, Jeff - spent much of tonight's meeting going around the layout and deciding how we wanted the buildings placed (so we could know where to have the roads, which therefore affects the backdrop). As one guy said "Now, do you see why it doesn't w**k well to have one husband and multiple wives? Here we are, a bunch of chiefs, and look at the trouble we're having..." Toughest thing of the time I was there, was where our tightest curve is located (on the interior 'backside' of the layout), and how to arrange the farm buildings. There's a pretty dilapidated (spelling?) farmhouse kind of building, but the difficulty was which kind of silos to put with it. We have the newer blue and white ones like a dairy farm would have, as well as some corrugated siding bins (think Rix or Walthers). But we managed to get it ironed out...
Order was in, too (Burma Shave sign set, some Blair Line signs (including one of those "Welcome to Your Town" like Lee has for Fox Creek), fork lift set, and the Collard's Creek office building set. Yeah, just what I need, another building, eh?
Lee - we're just waiting to see the next hottie that you'll have in your (spoken by a woman with a sultry voice:) "Spring and Hot Summertime corner lot..." (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink!) (WHACK!!) Ouch! Chloe, I was just kidding - Lee knows I'm just kidding...right, Lee?, Lee? (Where DID he disappear to?) (Oh, Lee - I second Todd's - and Barry's comments about your review of the regulations...)
Robby P.I will add what kind of thinner next time, and maybe the companys name, address, warning labels .
Don't forget the complete Material Safety Data Sheets, too, Robby! (tee hee...)
Todd - and other newer Diners - Elliott was the real life name of member/founder Big Boy 4005. Bama, we would NOT expect you to miss seeing your ballerina dance tomorrow night. You enjoy yourself watching her, y'hear?
Well, it's time for me to head for home, so prayers for all who need 'em (which would be all of us)!
Blessings and prayers,
Evening Gang: Well the puter is running a-ok for a change. Verison called this afternoon and said that they had found a problem with the way my modem was set and got it fixed on there end.
Rob the tractor is a Case International JX 80. They have sold a bunch of them here and this is the only one that has showed any problems like this. So far Case International has been really good about fixing things. The true test will be when I ask for a warranty extension. I've talked to the factory rep and he has said that C IH has given him abunch of mony to handle any thing that might come after the warranty expires but I'd like something in writting. I also must say that the dealer is really good. Of course I've only been doing business with them for the past 38 years.
Lee that's great news about the steel mills. I haven't seen anything on the Boatnerd news sight yet of course with the puter being down so much I haven't been able to look at it. Great progress on the layout. I was happy to see that you haven't put in tile on the ceiling. I've always felt guilty to have the jouists and heating ducts showing. What do you use for lighting?
PC our best to your daughter. It looks like that was some ride.
Barry those are some really good pictures. I like the one of the old house. What are they loading into that ship, and what is the name of the ship tied up in layup?
Well It's almost 10 pm and tomorrow is a 4am wake up.
Good Night All
Evening all, just got caught up from the previous Diner location, wow youse guys sure do talk a lot. I'll take a RBF, along with a bowl of vanilla ice cream with some chocolate syrup dribbled over it. Nothing much happening here, resting my right leg a little bit, got it tangled up pretty good in a briar patch and I've got some nice scratches all over it, its a little sore, but I've done the best that I can with it (cleaned, antiseptic-ed and bandaged). Had Cheeseburger Macaroni (home-made, not out of a box this time), and it was a success for everyone. Just stopping in and saying my hello's and catching up with everyone.
Ulrich, glad to see you stopping in on a regular basis, I know that we have not talked a whole lot, but my best wishes and prayers are with you and yours.
PC, healing thoughts and prayers for your daughter on the car wreck, hope the issue of fault gets figured out soon.
Robby, as always the cars look awesome, I hope to get as good at weathering cars as you do.
Welp all, I've finished the bowl of ice cream, so I'll finish off the RBF and then probably put the little one to bed and hit the hay myself. Tomorrow is Heather (the daughter) dance class, so I doubt that I'll be in here, but I'm going to try to make it. I'm also going to try to get some pictures of the bike done so that I'll have them. For now I'll just hang out in the window booth and watch the night ops.
Evenin' folks!
Chloe I'll have a RBF if you please. I'll be at the Rivet Counter chatting with Barry for a bit.
Barry, glad you are getting a good corn crop. How many different varieties did you put in? Hope you have have several. hate to have them get to old before you can eat all of them!!! Corn on the cob is my absolute favorite veggie. I have it about 4 times a week until the season is over. I don't plant it as I have a very small garden. I do have lots and lots of zucchini....... How 'bout trading some of your corn for some of my zucchini??? I see your cat likes sweet corn too. If I bring home corn and leave it on the counter, both of my cats will be up on the counter (I do not allow that!!!) chewing on the leaves. Must be something that cats like...........
My lawn got very thick and high over the past week of rain and thunderboomers. Got a little more than 1/3rd. of it mowed and the batteries were low. Let it charge and did close to another third tonight. Would have gotten a bit more done, but this time I ran out of sun........ Tomorrow morning I should be able to finish it up before the heat of the day, and then run the trimmer to get it all cleaned up.
Looks like I will get a good crop of winter squash from the garden as well as the summer squash and peppers.
Pretty much have the new paint booth set up today. The fan moves a lot more air than the blower I had hooked up to the old one and the booth is a good size for what I will use it for also.
Good Evening
Another batch of corn taken to next door neighbours and we STILL have a pile!!
And the trestle buildinig has been started
LTR---
Been working on some clouds today. Here's a couple of samples.
Aaaaaahh, now we're cooking with gas. Nostalgia. Ain't it great?! Gotta keep the traditions or it'll be gone by the way of the beer can opener. That's why it's good we have people like Ray and others who care for these RR museums and for, yes, Model Railroading that keeps the memories of steam and passenger service alive. The, argueably by some, better times. I did not know about the post from poster thing or I would have myself. That means I learned something today, that makes it a good day. Other than the waking up and finding myself breathing thing.
Chris- Yup, everything is rightside up. Yer learnin' (stretches suspenders with thumbs while rocking forward on toes and back)
Rob- Two or three ideas come to mind. Either the making of the teeny tiny molds and microscopic machine work costs more, or like you said, they have to make up on each item as opposed to volume to make it profitable to continue producing. That was only two, I forgot what the other idea was already.
Good morning, Chloe? a bucket of coffee please, having a real hard time getting started today. Don't get me wrong, I've been "up and at it" since 0800, I just haven't gotten anything accomplished yet.
TODD: Thanks pally. As for the GEEP, I wish I still had an article the Cedar Rapids Gazette did on the CNW System Locomotive Shop at Oelwein. It was a full-page item from '80, '81, maybe '82, about how the shop was busier than ever with all the Geep 7 and Geep 9 locos they'd bought from the ROCK that were being rebuilt, and these Geep 40s. The lead (or lede, if a soffisticated media type) was written from the perspective of a Geep 40. It told of the locomotive sitting inside a large gray building, while forklifts and overhead cranes buzzed by. She looked around at various parts (hers) laid out on the floor around her "with only chalked numbers upon them garunteeing (sp.) she'd get them back." Anyhoo, one picture that stuck in the mind, was of a sandblasted Geep 40 with a workman cutting into the nose with the torch, to make the "notch" for the classic CNW nose bell. Looked a lot like what I've got sitting on the w**k table. Hey, at least you didn't have to remind me which way is "up" on this project...
LEE: Thanks for the offer of the wood, glue, and screws...just pile it up by the back door, please and thank-you. I'm sure Vinnie won't mind Just be sure to NOT block the exit, I can't abide any fire/life-safety hazards around here...
I think I've narrowed-down the track plans I like...I've only got about 3 dozen or so in my files... to one in particular. It's a "harbor scene," but with a little change-er-oo here and there, it'll w**k as the CNW and CCP yards around Cedar Lake in Cedar Rapids. I'm looking at "National Docks Ry." published in the February, 2007 issue of MR. the plan shows it set up with a duckunder for continuous running...I wouldn't need that feature, other than for a switching lead for what would become the CCP yard. I haven't figured out how to incorporate my desire for a removable staging track, representing the CRANDIC line used for transfers to the CCP and CNW, also used by the Iowa Northern to get across town.
Hopefully, in a month or two, I'll be financially in a position to grab some shelf brackets and lumber. I'm planning on going with cantilever construction. The "fun" will come from trying to discern studs from lathe with the stud finder in this 100 year old house.
I think the coffee is kicking-in. Time to yield the floor...
