I just got internet service back. Shortly after I shut down prior to the approaching thunderstorms a lightning bolt hit the cable several miles from here and took out a whole series of boosters. As a result cable service was out for almost 10 hours. Haven't gotten much layout work done today as I was busy recording a bunch of programs from the DVR onto VHS tapes. One of these days I may break down and get a DVD recorder but they're going to have to get lower in price.

Yesterday afternoon and evening were rough, and reading all the responses this morning from you all is touching and much appreciated! Thank you all so much!
Kitty really did have 9 Lives! Little Miss Kitty was born in Jackson, MS where we got her from one of my waiters, Jeff Wurshmitt who had gotten her from one of my waitresses that had a litter back around the fall of 1996. I was an assistant manager at the time at Cuco's Mexican Restaurant. Jeff was 16 and could not take care of her so he offered for us to take her. At the time Ben was just a year old and Kitty always slept with him, she slept with him until just a few days ago. After a year in Jackson, MS we moved back to New Orleans and she moved with us. Then in 2005 Katrina hit and she survived that with us and the 3+ weeks living in a 1-room hotel. Then she survived the car accident with Monique on the move to NC. Once we moved here she ran off for the first 3 days and finally returned very hungry and stayed inside most of the time thereafter. Her passing affected me more than I thought, especially when I made the call yesterday afternoon to tell Monique, I broke down about a half dozen times.

Sun is out for the moment here in the Finger Lakes but won't be lasting long as Barry is sending some "liquid sunshine" aka: "heavy dew" over my way today. Talking about a half an inch tonight of the stuff.
I should get busy splitting and stacking what little firewood I have so far. May have to buy some this year. Haven't had a lot of time to hunt around for wood this summer. Got part of a large Maple tree last spring and it has been sitting ever since then in one of my driveways. Unfortunately that will only amout to less than 2 face cords and since I need about 10 face cords...........

Well the boxcar I just did, is sold. Thats pretty fast. That makes about $220-250 in about a week and a half. Time to order some more.
Jim........I have a lot of repeat buyers, and I've had some new ones also. A new person bought the boxcar I just posted. I have some people that buy cars from me, that depends on what the car is ( CSX, tankers, etc). Thats the only time they buy.
Chris....I use to not weather my cars until I thought I would try it. Now the layout looks 100% better. The problem is I keep selling my cars. If I sell a car for $60......I buy two to weather/sell and one for myself/bills/taxes.. So far that's working out.
Well I gotta run to the bank, and look for some new cars to weather. Everybody have a good morning.

Good morning, Coffee and two eggs scrambled, hash browns , bacon, grits, and toast please. Big day today, the church chicken fry, yeah. I hope it goes well. It's indoors of course, but the weather is calling for a 60% chance of showers and T-storms with a high of 72 F. Currently its 68 with 94% humidity. Boy it was sticky yesterday I even turned the air on in the truck. Big news is I went to my Castle Trains and picked up some weathering powders. Yup shore did. A.I.M. mixture pack for 30 bucks ( Tom behind the counter says he loves the brand). We'll see how that goes.
Chris- Nope. He walk out on his own. Of course none of the folks who live/lived in the affected area were there........ I have the same problem of I shoulda stopped layers ago. I'm trying my hand at an old TYCO high cube from yars agooo. I'm going slow and at each point I'm stopping and coming back say a day later and looking at it again then dulcote and work on next. Hopefully that will give improved results. Of course a baseball bat would give improved results. My plan was to take pictures of it as I went along to get Robby's opinion, and others too of course, of how it was going but the boy HASN'T BROUGHT BACK THE CHARGER FOR THE CAMERA YET!!! (I told her not to loan him anything that you might want back sometime. But did she listen to me? Nooooooo.)
Barry- I know what you mean on the RR budget busters. (Pesky house payment). I usually wait til the end of the month after the bills are paid and before "payday" to figure how much I can spend. Walk into the place and they say "HEY! Great! You had some money left over!" Not after this. (snicker)

After two or three days of near solid rain, the deluge has finally moved east... heads-up Illinoisians, you're gonna get WET. We've had at least 8-10 inches of rain here in Clarence, lots of flash-flooding around the region yesterday afternoon. UPRR still running track inspectors back and forth watching for any wash-outs.
RYAN: Sorry to hear about your Kitty, that's gotta be rough. It was a sad affair when my wife's favorite cat, Buddy, passed on a few years ago.

TODD: This is going back a few days, but you mentioned a "transplant" who didn't have a clue at your town hall meeting... did he manage to walk back out the door under his own power? Or did he have some "help" finding his way out?? Sounds like a glittering jewel of collossal ignorance.
JIM: I know the "smell" of residential facilities all too well... one of the many things I do NOT miss about EMS and home healthcare delivery.
JEFF: We've had some of those "surprise" thunderstorms this year too. I don't know what's up with NWS, but they've really dropped the ball a few times this year. Martelle (near Anamosa) got hit with a small twister last week...might've been the same system that visited Todd. No warning. Spotters (vol. Fire Dept.) weren't even out. All the tornado reports were coming in from counties well to the north.
DER JOHN: That tar oil tank is amazing! I especially am impressed with the leaf springs. I may have to go revisit the small utility trailer I knocked together a few months back. I'm happy with it, but the leaf springs would really snazz it up.
ROBBY P: As usual, another excellent job! By modeling '87-'93, I just don't have as many opportunities to rust-out my stuff like you do. When I do, it's generally the result of "I shoulda stopped a few layers ago..."

Well all, its been fun night, but its now time to hit the sack. The child is asleep on her little pull out couch in the living room and the Bearenstein Bears is playing on TV. So I'm off to bed, to go and get ready for the day tomorrow. Goodnight all!
The lumber is sitting out in the garage for phase I of my layout to begin construction tomorrow. Its not going to be operational, and will largely be a good size diorama (nine feet long, two feet deep). Phase II will allow for operation but I need to start somewhere.
I'm going with quarter inch birch plywood with half inch foam on top, with cork for the "main." Industrial area, so flat as aboard is the target. I used to have a layout with quarter inch plywood with half inch homosote on top. But foam is 1) a lot cheaper 2) easier to work with 3) several orders of magnitude lighter and 4) heck I can plant trees and such without a drill.
Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.
***Jim, after finding out their charges, looks like my wife will continue to make regular trips down there to oversee her folks. Oh well.
Now our Medical Insurance Co. is saying our regular Doctor (who we've had and used with this same Insurance Co for years) isn't on their list of Doctors so they will not pay for our visits, etc... Time to go on a letter writing tirade to every applicable entity we can think of. Going to fight this one.

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a hot fudge sundae and a Rio Grande mug of decaf, please. Just now getting done with w**k (I did have a 30-45 minute gap in there for dinner, at least). Found out some intricacies of commitments and how it's different when it's a veteran (not much...). This one shouldn't have taken nearly as long as it did. Sooooo glad tomorrow is Friday (except that I have to do laundry tomorrow night, since I'm on-call for most all of Saturday). I will be SO ready for Labor Day weekend!!
Eric, good to hear your family estate ordeals are about over at last. Also good that things are cooling off some and it won't be long until you can resume MRR'ing (hopefully).
Think I'd like a transplant for my sinuses tonight. First, last night I got the chicken too long on one side (ever had the aftersmell that follows the smoke alarm going off when some chicken drippings/grease sizzles too much?), which after running the bathroom exhaust fan most all of the afternoon (non-exhaust in the hood over the stove), still left the smell in the apartment. Then tonight, the local police dept.'s phones (and therefore their fax also) was on the fritz, so I had to go use a fax at one of the local residential facilities in the area to send and receive a fax (ya know the smell of very stale smoke and subdued urine smells that residential facilities can have? Yep, this one had that - and it's the dickens to get it out of your nose!). Okay, I'll quit whining (for now...).
Jerry, hope your Medicare chair guy actually is that quick, so your other guy doesn't run out of spare tires in the meantime with changing your flats out.

This was a sad day for Shelley and I. We went to the hospice to see our church friend with terminal cancer.
Also, I am working with my sisters to identify and recover major losses pertaining to my 90 year old mother being scammed. This is a really emotional experience.

Ryan, my condolenses for the loss of your four-legged friend. Weather for today was fairly well spot-on, it rained with a few rumbles of thunder here and there, overall, just a good soaking rain. Tomorrow is supposed to a lesser chance of rain, but rain nonetheless. The GP40-2 project is going very slowly right now considering that its raining outside right now. I do have a question though.
Would there be any ill-effects if I were to leave the front drive shaft assembly disconnected from the engine, but left the electrical contacts in place? I know that I probably wouldn't have the same pulling power, but at least I wouldn't have to dig around and actually find a worm gear set-up and driveshaft.
I'll take a RBF and hang out in here with everyone else. Any comments would be welcomed.

Well, I found out exactly what the city crews have been doing over across the street. They are not putting in a catch basin, but rather put a small ditch right in the street to carry the water further down the street towards the creek. They also put a hump in the driveway of the people across the street to stop water from draining into his lawn that way as well. Actually an inexpensive solution to his problems. We will see how well it works tomorrow night as they are predicting over an inch of rain.
