Coffee refill, please & thanks.

***Ryan, thanks! The wife said there was no pain following the tooth extraction, only relief. I was impressed how fast it has healed, too. Still have to get the ultrasound done on the swollen lymph node in her neck. (That's the scary one) And sleep studies. (bet I end up on a CPAP machine)

All the chores are done. Think I'll dig around and see what leftover stuff can be used to age the wife's (HO)  white farm house.

It's a good treatment for those with sleep apnea. One of my uncles had to use one for a while.

Todd, refresh my memory, what is there to celebrate about August 7th?

Why I'm surprised Ryan. Didn't you realize August 7th only comes once a year? In fact there will never be another Aug 7th 2009. Ever.

(chuckle) Actually it's just a mildly sarcastic thing I say from time to time after I get involved in an event that "requires" purchasing a card for someone other than for one time events such as graduation, weddings, deaths. Those types of things.  Most things I refer to as "card events". Nothing really in my opinion is special about the day to require getting a card other than, well, they make one for it. In fact i believe we only have one "Birth" day. The rest are just anniversaries that everyone has. Everyday. Nothing special to warrant a card. A hearty "Happy Birthday" wish verbally is all in my opinion that is sufficient to congatulate someone on surviving another year and may they be happy and well if not for the upcoming year but at least for the day.  Unfortunately this wasn't the case with my Granddaughters first "Birthday" this weekend, which by the way, I insisted was not because she already had the "birth" day a year ago. (wife sees nothing worth acknowledging in many of my opinions) As far as I know the child can't read and just uses the card as a type of $4.85 fan to wave by holding one page and waving it. We could accomplish the same effect with a piece of scrap paper. I guess she is preparing for the day there is money in it.

EDIT: Oh by the way, her mother did read the cards to her. In response the child made a scrunchy face and promptly poo pooed her dy dy. My feelings exactly. I think I'll like the kid.Approve

Jeff, are those Detail Associates backdrops in color? They sure look impressive, all right.
I'll let you know when I get them. I don't think they'd sell many if they were B&W.

They are indeed in color and look quite good.

Well I didn't get picked for juror duty.  I lucked out.  Can't stay on long.  Nasty storms are coming.

I will be back in, in the morning.

 Have a good night.

Evenin'

We had a batch of showers and boomlets come through this afternoon---the thing that came through last night was something to behold!!Shock The lighning thrashed around here and split 4 trees and did a number on a house just in behind us--done the garage in anywaysSad we had the power go out until early this afternoon---just in time for more t'underin'boomers to whip through---it is now sunny and a bit less sticky out---

My day was spent helping one of our neighbours clear some brush out of the front yard and cut up the remnants of the split tree they had--Sad they now get to see what is left of the pick up truck that was theirs---sat under the split treeDead

We apparently have another batch later on---yuckDead

Good evening to all, HHH weather here today, I'll have a double RBF.

I don't know how JEFF takes this high humidity  Dead, it really saps your strength and is a prime UNmotivator for any outside work. The pool is where it's at!!!

I'm headed down to the lower (much cooler) level of the house to do some painting and weathering of the Truss bridge.

TOM: SNOW up in Donner Pass??Shock A bit early for that? Maybe signs of the kind of Winter we have coming?

ED: ED Smileyou old hound dog!!! Good to see you in the Diner, sit down, Cloe, bring another RBF for Ed please! Get a look at those RR tracks! Shiny, brand new ballast, AND, CONCRETE TIES !!!!!! This is a prime main line mon ami !! Happy to see that Jr. is headed to college.

JEFF: Try using a fan to move the air towards your exhaust port/window in the trailer. The build up in a small area might overwhelm a face mask, not many cu ft in a trailer, maybe 1200 guessing?

BOBK: I showed my wife your forum entry in the Diner, she was a color guard Sergeant in our HS all girls drum corp and went to many competitions in New England and New York. That really brought back memories for her, and she said to give April her best wishes for success in the competition.

Later guys,

Afternoon all from HOTSunnyCal:

It was supposed to be 102 here, today.  Just walked in the house and the outside temperature was 108.  And we've got a couple of forest fires in the area that are sending those little 'particulants' down here into the Valley, so the air is not exactly nice.  One is about 160 miles to the north, in Shasta County, the other is burning a little to the south in Tuolumne county.  And the slight wind from the north is funneling both of them right into the Valley, here.  Ah, summer in California!   Needless to say, no work on the MR in the garage today, until the sun goes down, at least.

Our weatherpersons here on TV are promising that by the end of the week we'll be back to our usual August weather--mid 'nineties.  Whoopie!  Whistling

Well, survived the first day of "Choral Camp" over at the high school.  It's where we get together with the choral students and plan out the year's concerts.  It was a hoot!   General rowdy reunion, lots of hugging and back slapping and guys telling me that "We're so glad you're BACK, Doc!"   since I had to take last year off because of my re-built leg.  One of my basses--Riley, who is a 6'5" goofball, grinned and said he wanted to see my leg.  "Not if you plan on having lunch,"  I told him.  He blinked.  "That bad?"  "Let's just say that Bermuda shorts and I have become total strangers for the benefit of innocent bystanders,"  I cracked.   Riley got the message, bless him.

It's gonna be a good year.  And even after 2 months of general goofing off, the guys, once roped and corralled, sounded pretty darned good after some warm-ups.  We're going from 10 to 2 through Thursday, so by the time classes start in 2 weeks, they should be just fine.  We also were introduced to the new Chamber Music Associate--a Jesuit Scholastic who is going to take Phil Ganier's place next year--Scholastics are only allowed 3 years on any given Jesuit campus to gain experience as they go through their several steps to a Teaching Priesthood.  Like Phil, he's a hot-shot, and like Phil, I think the guys are going to love him.   He also plays a MEAN piano!  We're already talking about doing some 2-piano work together while he's here.

Ed:  So GOOD to hear from you!  Bow  Wow, I like that photograph:  25 feet from what looks like a dual-track mainline IN THE MOUNTAINS with concrete ties, of all things.  So, how many trains per day are we talking about?  I'd be in hog heaven! Tongue

Garry:  No articulated yet.  Actually, it's a GN Challenger (the one they didn't keep very long, LOL!).  No news from Sunset at all.  It might turn out to be a lost cause.  I've got a $300 deposit at Bruce's Train Shop on it, but if it doesn't come in by December, I think I'll cancel and use the deposit on some other stuff (hey, he might get another Yellowstone in on consignment, right?Tongue).  Speaking of articulateds, though, that new Proto Rio Grande 2-8-8-2 of mine is starting to wear the factory finish off of the drivers, and I just keep adding cars.   It's turning into a really good little 'drag freight' workhorse.  Either I've obtained a 'freak', or that company is actually beginning to put out steam locos that PULL!  I am so pleased that I actually posted a 'review' in the web's 'modeler's review' section, here.

Robby:  Ah, Juror duty.  One of the teachers at Jesuit is married to a lawyer here in town.  She told me that the last time she got called for juror duty, she just told the judge: "Of COURSE he's guilty, he got arrested, didn't he?"  She's never been called back, since, LOL!   Here in Sacramento, when you get called for jury duty, you can bet that 90% of the time it happens, anything you sit on will be drug-related.   Fortunately in my case, I happen to know just about every Superior Court judge in town, socially or through church or school connections, so everytime I appear, I'm excused.  I finally told the recorder at the court that summoning me was just a waste of everyone's time.  Haven't been called in about 3 years, now.   And believe it or not, there seems to be NO age limit here in California for Jury Summons.  My 95 year old mother was summoned this summer in Nevada County.   She called the Court Recorder and said, "Are you KIDDING?"  "Oh, sorry Claire.  Little mix-up here."  Whew!   I can see my mother and her little Porta-Motor trying to fit into the Jury box, LOL!

Well, Uff-Dah and Spooky just came in and hopped up on the desk:  "Where have you been all day, Daddy, there was nobody to IGNORE around here!"   Right now they're whacking at each other, so I'd better play Peacemaker.  Uff-dah is somehow starting to get some Winter fur, which means he's going to be a Norwegian rug in about another month.  Even Spooky's getting a little thicker in the fur department (like she NEEDS to, LOL!).  If these two big furry beasts are any Harbinger, we may be in for a WET winter around these parts.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Smile

Hey Duke:

Can you guess?

Jeff, I'm only at 236. Sigh

UPDATE: I found out that that the train crew stopped for a hot box, Then found out there was a leak. the leak was belived to be caused by the car venting, and when the train stopped, the load sloshed and went out the vent pipe, causeing the vapor cloud.

Hello .........

It worked! All I had to do was just think about picking on Berks, and Duke chimes in! I suspect now he plays possom; so watch what you say. My guessis Duke will be back to sleep tomorow. Don't count on Duke to bring donuts and coffee from a Detroit Tim Hortons. Slim chances. Good to see Barry kidding Duke too.

Ulrich...... It was good to see you. We're "pulling for you". Keep us posted. If Duke fails to bring donuts, feel free to bring some strudel.

Corey ......It sounds like you really did have a produtive day. Filing points will reduce derailments in my opinion.

Rob .... You, too......... but um......er....a soylent green plant .... uh, oh.....are we headed that direction?

Ray........ Sorry you had bad weather at the picnic. Sounds like everybody made the best of things and had fun anyhow.

Ryan ..... I bet you know how we seasoned our steaks we grilled this evening. That Cajun Chef Ryan rub is good stuff!

Bridge Tom..... I hope you have not been holding your breath waiting for the challenger!  Good to hear about the 2-8-8-2.

Jeff .......... Congrats on #12,000!!!!

Todd ... What's teh deal with the greeting cards?

Nik ... Neat picture.

Ed ..Two days in a row! ...Did you bring OJ?

I have working on my freight yard.

Dick: Get a look at those RR tracks! Shiny, brand new ballast, AND, CONCRETE TIES !!!!!! This is a prime main line mon ami !!

Yeah, sure is.  This is the main line between Mexico City and the port of Veracruz.  Ferrosur.  Can't seem to link directly to the Ferrosur website route map, so I'll try just giving you the link to their website.  From there, just click on "Vias principales".

www.ferrosur.com.mx

Tom: Wow, I like that photograph:  25 feet from what looks like a dual-track mainline IN THE MOUNTAINS with concrete ties, of all things.  So, how many trains per day are we talking about?

It's just a relatively short section of double track.  I know where it's single track higher up, and where it's single track farther down, but I don't really know the exact limits of the double track.

Since we were only been in the house for a couple of days, and were running around doing stuff during that time, I'm not sure.  My impression is that there are maybe 10 trains a day in each direction.  Plus a few light engine moves as helpers run back down the mountain to the yard at Orizaba.  We head back this Wednesday, so in a week or so I'll have a better idea.

Duke, good to see you hanging out here too.   A few familiar faces from the old Coffee Shop group.

Garry, no, no juice this time.  Harvest starts in late October.

Heading out to the orange grove tomorrow just for a quick check (and maybe pick some avocados) before we head to Cd Mendoza on Wednesday.

Regards

Ed

Evenin' folks!

Garry, the only one who was really upset was a little 5 yr. old boy who came with Grandma and Grandpa planning on riding the train.....  he was in tears when he found out that they had to leave before they got to ride.  I made sure they knew that they could get "rainchecks" for use at a later time.  they said they would bring him back so they all could ride the train.

BTW, whatever happened to Spacemouse?

Ed, I'm looking forward to a fresh supply of OJ this Fall!  Nice place to be right by the tracks like that.  I bet you planned that, right?

I got some more scenery completed this evening.  Just a small area near the tunnel by the yard lead.  (12,000 posts?  Holy $%!!)   Ended up having an unplanned meeting with our Boy Scout Distrcit Executive about the probable reorganization of a couple packs here in town.  He and I are very much on the same wavelength on how things should be handled.  he wants to have a meeting to work out some issues that will include ALL the parties involved or that would be affected by the outcome.  That would include the packs, the chartering organizations (which are merging, hence the restructure of the packs), the commissioners involved, and scoutmasters, reps from the troops (me).  I know most of the people involved and it could get nasty..........  Both the exec. and I will do our best to keep what would be best for the boys as the top priority.

Good evening everyone!  Ed:  It's great to see you back in. I thought those were concrete ties when you posted that photo...I wondered if Mexico was runing out of trees!  There's a local mrr who sent me this the other day; it's the L.N.E.R. Flying Scotsman on what are somewhat odd looking concrete, considering the age of the loco!

CapeJim: You asked which manufacturer's fence I was using. Why, ACME of course! Whistling I Wylie away my time scratch building the thing.Clown I forget who asked about the size.(Ryan?)...this one's 9 feet to top of the mesh, 12' over the razor wire. So in Normal Scale that's 7/10ths inch to the mesh top, 3/4 inch overall.

I was able to build the second gate today, finish the STOP signs for both, and paint them. I did a count, and there are 28 individual pieces in each gate. Here's before and after painting.

Have to get to bed, so I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel

Sleepy time now, but tomorrow! Tomorrow I think I can work on the choo choo train set. (did you hear that? I said CHOO CHOO TRAIN SET!)

Duke- Love that picture!

Tom- sounds like you're in for a great year.

Jeff- Congrats on the 12,000. Sorry no card.

Garry- I just have a sore spot for the greeting cards for everything. I'm not really as much of a sour puss as I sound. I do buy cards, I just like to grumble. The wife is used to it an doesn't pay me much mind other than " oh hush". And of course........"the look" Whistling

DerJohn- 28 pieces for something that probably isn't much bigger than my thumbnail. Makes me rethink the old thread of the greatest invention for modeling. The MAGNIFYING GLASS!!!!!. Excellent work by the way.

I'm gonna have to blow the dust off the ole credit card and give some of that Ryan Dust a try from the sounds of it. You guys are some great advertising.

Prayers for those in need. Zzz

Hot Cocoa, please.

***Der, very sharp gates there. Nice job!Thumbs Up

Yup, have been planning on going GREEN in the train room for awhile now. Soylent Green wafers anyone? The plan is to use the DPM Woods Furniture kit as the main structure and kit-bash some other models laying around to add to it. Judging from the poor job I'm doing with the silos, not sure what I'll end up with. Need to find the right color (green) for the main building, but not one that will overshadow the delightfully bright "product". I envision bright green wafers loading into open hoppers, but as a food product, that just doesn't make sense. Now, having lots of wee little folk in stocks, waiting for processing does make sense to me. OK, so I'm a bit warped.EvilLaugh

Good night y'all.

Good morning, I made the final pour on Fox Creek last night and installed my fisherman in a boat before the “water” dried completely.  I also spent a couple hours installing apple pickers in the orchard and pedestrians in Fox Creek.  Tonight’s challenges include gluing the remaining 20 people around Fox Creek and installing a new fuel filter and air cleaner in my 1:1 scale Ford F-250.

Pictures to be posted by this weekend.

Good Morning All,

Jeff - congrats I guess. Is 12,000 the max on this forum overall ?

mid 70's already with a high predicted in the mid 80's and scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. In other words another one of those days. At least the predicted high is 10F below yesterdays. I'll have a regular and a donut to go please.

Ed - good to see you in the diner while you're in town. 20 to 30 traiins a day doesn't sound too much of a good thing. the way freights NOB run now (mostly after dark in the northeast) junior might have trouble sleeping that close to the tracks. I was amazed at thow many moves CSX made through south Pittsburgh after dark horns blaring and all. Didn't bother me much though as I spent 3 years living just below the flight deck and catapault and can sleep through anything as a consequence.

Dick - the only pool I have is the pool of sweat. Spent time yesterday unloading/loading the storage container hereat the shop and was literally drenched.

Robby - after just starting the new job the last thing you needed to do was take a few weeks off for jury duty. I was selected last year, but they settled the case the day before trial so I didn't have to actually serve and it still counts so I'm off the hook for another three years. Hope you keep your hand in with the weathering - you really have a lot of talent. Maybe after you get ahead a bit you can do a couple of "keepers". Hope the wife is doing better too.

Ordered the Miller Engineering Maxwell House and General Electric Illuminated roof top signs as tthey will probably be gone by the time I get started up again. They will join the Elliots Diner, and Rexall signs in the industrial area/city section of the next layout. The GE sign is i think from upstate NY but they had just the same on top of their factory in Bridgeport where my aunt worked, and the Maxwell House sign was patterened on one in New Jersey but I got it cause I prefer Maxwell House and it just looked cool.

All for now - lots to do today as usual while we prepare for 4 races (Atlanta starting the 17th, Mt Equinox the 21st, Lime Rock the 3rd of Sept and Watkins Glen the 8th of Sept - the last two with 7 and 14 cars respectively). Catch y'all later, J.R.

 Good morning.

It's 78 and partly cloudy. The high will be about 96 and there's a chance of rain.

Yesterday I received the backdrop materials I ordered from Walther's last week. I really like the crispness and clarity of the Busch woods background scenes. The Detail Associates stuff isn't quite as crisp but it'll do. The Detail Associates scenes are piece that you cut out and mount where you want them. I got one with farm town buildings, another has land scenes of a rural nature and the third has woods scenes. I started on the "Skip's Chicken and Ribs" DPM kit yesterday and got it all together last night. It still needs some more work but is already on the layout. I may have time today to get started on the "Robert's Dry Goods" kit. There was a bit of an emergency in the family last night. Just after 7 pm I got word that my mother needed help. No info, just that she needed help. My sister and I went down to see what was going on. It seems that she hadn't paid attention to the time and had gone without eating anything since a light breakfast she'd had that morning and now didn't have enough energy to get up much less stand. Her blood sugar level was in the high 30's. That would never do. I gave her 5 cookies to eat. That's 11 grams of sugar. That got her blood sugar up to an acceptable level while I heated up a baked potato and some ribs she had brought home the previous day. She was doing OK when I left to come back home. I went back to check on her a couple of hours later. By then my father was home and could help her if needed it. She was feeling fine and was her usual cheerful self.
