Robby-  Mind if I critique a little. Your cars as usual look great, but just allow me a moment to assist;

The Rock car well,....hm. Ok so I can't find anything needed on that one.

Saskatchewan cyl hopper,........alright so that one looks perfect too.

Ah, the Railbox, now THAT one,......well, uh, the car looks fantastic but, um well, you need to work on the trees in the background, they look a little fake compared to the car. Just trying to help.

Good afternoon.  No rain in sight, but its kinda overcast.

Finished up a car for "the bay" this morning.  Seems like someone likes my cars.  In the last week alone, he has spent $300+ on my boxcars/hopper.  Plus he's interested in the one I just finished.  That really helps us out money wise.  BUT the *fee's* is adding up Grumpy.

Called FedEx Ground this morning.  They are hiring 3:30am-830am shift $9.50 a hr, plus a raise after 30days.  I worked at a FedEx Ground in Charlotte, NC several years ago.  I worked at that one for a year and a few months.  Gave it up since my grandmother was walking to work (I worked 3rd, and didn't get home till 8-9am).   The lady on the phone said I should be fine, since its been several years.  While I worked at the one in Charlotte, I got....Employee of the week twice, promoted (different jobs) four times, caught some people stealing (got a award by The Head FedEx Manager), I was a trainer for the new people.  So maybe that will help me.

Here's some of the latest cars I have done.  All to a new home.  If I get the FedEx job, I can kinda slow down.

Hope everybody is going good, and have a good afternoon.

Bear Wolf Warning!

Sorry, we are out of bears this season. Will a wolf also do?

With the downfall of the iron curtain, wolves are now migrating back to the west, following their old routes. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the woods...

Nah, a little of the wet stuff just gives us more nature to observe. Right now the "Birds, Bugs, and Beasts" track is watching a DEC Video about "Living with bears"  Later they will get to "explore a bear trap.  Just an FYI for those of you who love the outdoors.....

Bear Warning!

The National Park Service is advising hikers, hunters and fishermen to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while in the wilderness this summer.

Hikers are advised to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bears unexpectedly. They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity.

People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and
grizzly bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper
spray.

Have a great day!

Good Morning, Zoe, I think I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ, bowl of that Raisin Bran and a glass of milk, please, and a D&RGW mug of coffee to wash it all down with. Thanks!

Sawyer, forgot to mention last night that your RS there looks great. Thumbs Up

Ulrich, that was very nice of your neighbours to throw you both a little party for your anniversary. Must have some good neighbours there. Yeah!!

And I see Ray's busy at the camp already - hope the wet stuff doesn't cause any missing of fun things for your campers.

Supposed to have a (sorta) hot one in Cape G.-land today, upper 80's or lower 90's (F), which isn't really bad for July weather around here. Humidity's up some, but supposed to have chances of showers later in the week.

I'll join the crew at the RC watching the morning switcher doing its stuff.

Good Mornin, A bowl of Raisin Bran please. Nope, no problems, I just like Raisin Bran. Yes please, a cup of coffee too.

It's 62 F now and supposed to get to 86 F with partly sunny skies.

Nothing special happening today it looks like.

Have a Great Day! Big Smile

Good Morning Fols, thanks for all the wishes to my anniversary - I am still in shock and awe how fast those years have past by. The budget did not allow for a celebration, but neighbours and friends arranged a little surprise party. Reaching a silver wedding anniversary is the exemption and not the rule anymore, as over 60 % of all marriages get divorced nowadays. One should make a poll on how that figure looks anmong model railroaders ... all of you - a good day!

We had a great day hear, have 28 campers ready to learn and have fun.  SciTek Quest has begun!

Not even any of Barry's thunderboomers until we got in the dining hall for supper.  It poured then with a great light show outside.  Tonight's opening campfire was held inside.  No sooner got back to the lodge than we got some more "weather".......

Have a good one!  Hope to stop in tomorrow.

Evening, Janie, Flo - could I have a taco salad (hold that 'da Bomb' sauce, please! Shock) and a Dr. Pepper, please. Thanks, ladies!

Todd, your plan works well for when the two-legged critters can be 'faced' in real life, but online, they hide in the lockers or duck down the hall, or "Oh no, you must've misunderstood me - I would NEVER mean that mean-spirited type of remark...". I find (for me, YMMV) the online ones respond better with totally ignoring the dolts (since taking a 2 X 4 to them isn't really an option in the forums...Whistling) No, Crandell, I was just speaking hypothetically (but you let us know if the real life 'woodshed' option is available, and we'll help clean out some of the - ahem - clutter....)Oops

Jeff, that lake is down even more than I'd guessed - 10 feet?! So, I suppose the anthropologists are artificially keeping the level down for the sake of their 'dig'? That was hilarious about your gal and the quickly-shortened rant when she saw the light bar! Laugh Couldn't backpedal fast enough, could she? Hey, nice Cotton Belt boxcar - our LHS owner/MRR club member is an ex-SSW conductor. He'd appreciate that one!

Ulrich, I hope a few of those thunderboomers just get rained out before they get to you. Now, your neighbors who like R/C boats for their basements, they might disagree, but...Smile,Wink, & Grin And Happy Anniversary! (Just don't let the frau see your post!Black Eye)

Lee, I was (sorta) able to see your dumper pic, but can somebody please give me a logical reason WHY the #$%*&^ at Webshots use a bandwidth-wasting format like Flash, for STILL photos??? Mutter, mutter, mutter...SoapBox The dumper does look good though, Lee. Sorry for the rant, but websites that needlessly waste bandwidth are a pet peeve of mine. (Probably related to another pet peeve about politicians who waste MY money. Guess I'd better move on before I get onto THAT one...)

Cederstrand

Jeffrey, wish we could see a pic of that gals face in the parking lot. Just maybe she will think twice about her own driving & attitude next time.

Nah, Rob, I doubt that one'll happen - some of those drivers never do figure out the cause of the problems...

***Barry, so, how's the squirrel doing?

You mean "Fricassed Fred'"? (in Garry's absence, I'll pinch-hit for him)

Barry, I've been about 30-40 feet away (back in my college ROTC days), marching down a street, when lightning hit a transformer on a power pole ahead of us. It only took our platoon leader a split-second to give us the order to 'break ranks' (any longer, and we would have done that, anyway... Whistling)

Jerry, how's the 'fixing' of your chairs doing? Have they got everything up and running properly?

This weekend I started what was gonna be Phase II of the background warehouse, but I think I'm gonna call it Phase I-b instead. Started out with one of these ScotchBrite pads to rub off much of the 'mortar':

and then tried drybrushing some Boxcar Red (the walls still looked kinda light to me), and wound up with this:

which I'm not really happy with, not a close enough color match to my 'brick red' that the spray paint was.

I also wanted to show the depot I'll be using for the Cortez station. It was a DPM/Woodland Scenics, but the baggage door was on the back side of the wrong wall (IMHO...), so I cut and re-glued it to put the baggage section on one side, and the passenger seating area on the other.  Here're some photos of it (still need to paint it, and the roof is just set on it - I hope to build an interior for it before I get it all done). Front:

Side (angled) view:

Other (passenger) side view:

And the back view:

I also noticed on my trailer court office/shed, that I'd epoxied the roof on before painting the building (and before gluing the window glass in), but I decided that with some fiddling, I can slide the window 'glass' in the door and then play 'tip-and-tilt' until it's in the right spot, and use a sticky stick (tape or some glue from a glue stick) to move the 'glass' out, apply glue, and pull the glass back to the opening. Since I don't know of an easy way to un-epoxy something (without totally damaging things in the process), that'll have to do. I WILL remember not to do that again...Banged Head

About time for me to head for home. I'll see you Diners (and ladies) in the morning. Prayers for safe parking lots, for progress on draining your ponds (or filling them back up, in Jeff's case), for healing, and thanksgiving for a Happy 25th Anniversary, Ulrich! Yeah!!Bow

Blessings,

Eric,

Once upon a time Ohio had block coal mines but those ran out years ago. The railroad I loosely model after is the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern.  They had a line that ran south from Ashtabula, OH to the Pennsylvania – West Virginia state lines where they serviced 4 coal mines.  The coal was transported north to power plants, steel mills and other customers but most of it went to the docks to be transported to the upper Great Lakes States and exported to Canada.

I wasn’t going to model a coal mine, but in the name of “operations” I need a means to load the hoppers.  I have an out of the way corner in the basement (in a spare room), separate from the main layout that I can install a coal mine and a loader.  I have a power plant and I will have a coal dock (at the port) to receive the coal via the dumper I just built and a future dumper.

The neat thing will be the train departing the coal mine will need to travel once around the #1 and #2 mainline, then switch to the #3 mainline to deliver the loaded cars to the power plant that’s approximately 195’ of travel.  Then the locomotive will have to make a stop at the roundhouse to be turned to pick up empty hoppers before returning to the coal mine.  While the mallet operator is running hoppers back and forth on the main line there will be a drill team at the power house and the coal mine running switchers to load/unload the hoppers.  A similar event will be taking place to deliver coal to the port where a third drill team will be unloading hoppers into the waiting 720’ freighter.  The primary goods moved on my layout are Iron Ore and coal.  So there will be an opportunity for another operator to transfer ore Jennies from the port to the yard or the steel mill.  So if I can pull it off at my next operating session I can gainfully employ 6 operators at once doing something more than just running trains around in a circle.

Jerry - that RBF sounds good, I'll have one too and I'll take care of Jerry's tab, thanks.

Lee - I went back and looked at your unloader... simple (that's not an insult!!!), but practical and efficient.... I definitely like it.  I can picture a loader in the hills, (modified Walthers minekit perhaps?).  Of course I've never been to Ohio, how do they mine coal there?  Anyway, can't wait to see it in action.

Houdy All!

I'll make this one shorter as we seem to be having a T-Storm affecting our utilities.

Visited with my ex-girlfriends family up north on Saturday for a picnic.  Her Mom invited me even though the girls fiance' was there... Don't know what that's about but her mom makes great food so I went....

nik.n - I ordered 2 of those grab bags, I hope I can make something too!

I had plans for doing some MRR stuff but summer here apparently is not good for that.... Too many interruptions.....  Someday.... Maybe!!

Things have been crazy here with the BENNYS.  An acronym for tourists originally traveling on the shared Penn, CNJ, Coastline.... Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Newark, New York State ( I know, geographically it's wrong but that's the usual order), and now jamming the Garden State Parkway.  And then, locals evading police in pursuits.  Nothing like a dozing New Yorker waking up at 6:30am after taking down a utility pole on the local highway... or a local flipping an SUV after a 2.5 mile pursuit  "I din't do nothin' wrong!!!"  Of course he couldn't explain the 6 cases of laundry detergent (which were crushed and spread over the road) in the back of the truck.....

Any hoo... enough unimportant stuff from NJ.

***Lee, can't wait to see the video of it. Real coal? If so, those little locos will get a work out for real. Very cool!

Glued some small sections of foam to the corner of the canyon (wife's HO layout). Then added some sheetrock compound to make room for a small cabin. Eventually wife will add things like a banjo player, nearby still and anything else she feels belongs there.

Lee- Believe it or not, as obvious as it is, it took me a while. I thought about it off and on then it dawned on me while I was mowing the yard. OF COURSE the 90 degree coat hangers! I just came in to re look at the photos to confirm and I saw your post. Boy the simplest things huh. My first thought was you had magnets mounted where the bolts on the bottom where to hold the car but I thought that might be too iffy and you'd spend some time digging the cars out of the bucket. Loose coal, cool! I'll be looking for the loading operation next. (or did I miss that?) Would the coat hangers work if they were the width of the car to keep it flat? Or would they be in the way and/or look wrong. How do you keep them from sliding while the car is inverted? Friction? I would think that would loosen over time. Clamps? I'm sure your friend has it figured out. I'm just curious.

I took the 2nd class Modell Railroader quiz in MRH mag and am just class 1 (or whatever it's called) FLUNK!! Class 1 probey I guess. Laugh  What's an articulated? (that aughta bring Tom a runnin')

Todd, there are 4 pieces of wire coat hanger bent 90 degrees.  When the car is rolled over it rests on the wire and then the top of the car rests on the bent section.  The left side wheels do come off the rails a little but fall back in place when righted.

Rob, as soon as I clear off that area and put all the tools away I plan on shooting a short movie of it in operation.
