Hi Gang: Just a quick note here. That tooth is really bothering me today. I had to pull off the road this morning on my way in it was hurting so bad. I'm doing all right now but if it's hurting that way in the morning I'll stay home. My appointment with the dentist is tomorrow afternoon so I'll get it fixed then.

Not much going on here at work. It's the last day of full time operation so we go to weekend operation Monday. That lets me play catch up on re-pairs during the week. I can't get anything done in the park when we're open.

You all have a goodday and I'll see you tonight.

PC, nice shots of the Fisher station and train - looks like a GP7 (or 9) to me. Heck, I’d be willing to pay $6.00 to ride in that business car! Is your area always that busy on the weekends (railroad stuff)? I think I’m jealous!

Actually, it's one of each.  No.426 is a GP7, and No.200 is a GP9.  There're a little busier then normal around fair time, but there's something going on every weekend in the summer, one or two things throught the week, and some specials in the off season like the haunted train around halloween and the Christmas train and stuff.  Sometimes they run a Monon F9 too.  Here's a shot of it along side the shed that the steam engine is being restored in.

Just got back from Steamtown.  Definitely worth the trip.  We plan to go back soon but without the time restraints like we had today.

Here are some pics.

This is the roundhouse and turntable.  They let you watch as the steam engine is take from the roundhouse to the yard for prep.  Great tour and really answered a lot of questions we has about steam engines.  The tour really make me appreciate the thought that went into the development of steam powered vehicles.




This is the steam engine on the turntable.  My son was so blown away by the whole thing and his Mom kept asking him to turnaround a smile for the camera.  I love that response.  Mom got a laugh too.



Finally the Steam engine is going on it's run to Moscow, PA.  We did not have the time to go on that trip but we will the next time we go there.  We did do the Scranton Limited.




Well need to get ready for work.  TTFN.

Sorry been off again, this week was a killer!

Built and installed a suspended G-layout in a resturant with 18ft ceilings by myself.

The client promised help, laser level, scissor lift, parts and tools that I didn't own.

Took from Tues. @ 10am til  Fri.@ 11:30 am to finish! TALK ABOUT BEING TORKED!!!!! I told my boss that NEVER again unless it was spelled out in writting what would happen if I had to twiddle my thumbs instead of doing my job or things weren't as stated.

BTW- It was approx. 150 deg. next to that ceiling.

My prayers for all as I finally caught up from my last post.

Ryan- Printed the recp. and we'll have to give it a try.

I'll try to find the address for listentng to the sound lib. from Digitrax and post it for y'all.

Duce- Look'in forward to ya moving that close to me. Check out Andy's steakhouse in Fredberg. as we service the layout and are going to build another one there.

Hey a general note- had and a-rab stop in on Fri. and ask if we sold any pics. of the local millitary bases. One of my techs. is retired USAF and he was gonna make a report to some Brass he knows. Had the tag# and this jokers info as well as all the ?s he asked.

Not much happening thought I would drop in and say hi. been awhile. Did get room straightened up today so now I can start working on fixing the floor and the walls so I can build my layout. Have to fix the door first (so cats can't get in here and go thru any of the holes I make ) Then start on the floor and slowly work on the walls as I do that.

Then maybe will be able to build my layout (still trying to decied wheather it 6' X 11' or will be 8' X 11' the room is 13' X 11' and need room for chest freezer, desk, and filing cabinet)

PC, sorry to hear about your problem when railfanning.  I'm afraid too many people are too willing to give up their freedoms for a false sense of security.  Living in a free society means accepting a certain amount of risk.  [turns and steps away from soapbox].

Jerry, I don't know if that 0-4-0 was an active steamer or not.  There was so much there to see I didn't take a close look.  It was sitting on the same track and directly in front of the Big Boy.  My first thought was what the engineer of the 0-4-0 would think if he turned around and saw the Big Boy coming up behind him.  "Oh, ***" springs to mind.   Maybe Gumby took a closer look today.

I'm still working on repairing water damage so no mrr work has been done lately.  I am working in the train room now though.  I have to put temporary supports under the bench work to get the old moldy drywall off and the new drywall on.  Putting it back together is a lot slower than tearing it apart.  After starting to clean the dust of the benchwork to do some mrr a couple times, I decided the mrr will have to wait until the repairs are done.  Tearing out and installing drywall is just too dusty.

Hope everyone and their friends and families are doing well or getting better.

Good evening folks:  Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers for our daughter.  She’s still not home, as 1) she’s still getting dizzy when she stands, and 2) her doctor will be doing rounds in the a.m. Monday, and they won’t release her until he’s checked all the meds, etc., or so it seems.

BTW, why does she need such a high dose of Calcium?

  It’s a metabolism thing, I guess she doesn’t take up calcium as readily as most people, so her blood serum Ca levels are generally low, and this is not good news for all kinds of reasons.

 

NJBill:  Thanks very much for that advice and the website.  We’ll certainly check it out, and ask about availability here.  Maybe there is a Canadian clone. They seem to be “For USA only”, but that may be a CYA move. I’ll phone them tomorrow, as their customer service email is just for the USA.

Lisa: Great progress on the layout! What “water” are you using?  So far I’m just painting on gloss Pod Podge.  I’m not sure if I want o go to the bother of pouring layers of high gloss plastics, but then I see the results of those who do……

 

Paul: On the watering of trees, if I’ve got this right, the roots that really matter are about at the edge of the leaf line all around the tree.  The ones closer in are more for transportation than absorbsion.

I can sympathize with your dental woes, I broke out a large filling on Saturday at dinner.  Have to phone first thing tomorrow for an appointment.

 

Ryan:  Thanks for the recipe, that looks awesome! I like the detail on the broiling method, but 2lbs!  That’s for each person, right?

That’s about it for tonight. Rolled the doorway module into place for today’s running, and found that the casters on the left hand side we out of adjustment so the tracks on that side wouldn’t meet the layout tracks. Bummer.  I hope I don’t have to take the top off the module (it’s technically possible by design, but a probable pain in the butt) and turn the base upside down to alter the way the casters are mounted.  I shall probably procrastinate on that, and just run “locals” and in the yards. (I’ve a patch cord that spans the doorway for power when the module isn’t in place.)

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Okay, on the orange juice front, I "took one for the team" today.  It's really way too early to start picking fruit, but every now and then we get a limb that breaks off due to age or weight of the fruit.  Yesterday we had a limb break on one of the tangerine trees.  I picked off about 50 smallish, and unripe, tangerines.  Took them home and we squeezed the juice of them.  Waaaaayyyy to sour to use as straight juice.  But, cut with water and with sugar added, it makes a passable orangeade.  Actually, the way Fran made it was a bit too sweet for me (although she thought it was still too sour).  I had her add an extra measure of straight juice to mine and it was just right.  Yeah your lips puckered a bit, but it did have decent flavor. 

We're headed back out to the grove tomorrow.

I think they said that one or two more steam engine were do out of the shop next year.  There was a lot of stuff to take in at that place.

Cool here this morning, got 58 out now, suppose to be nice today, low 80's, low humidty. Don't get much of anything done yesterday, help Mother can up some homemade salsa and she did a couple jars of whole tomatoes, to finish out the canner, also worked on the shed doors, got one done an hung.
Mother wanted to run over to Effingham, so I grabed the camera and rode along. Seen one train, it was to far away and moving to fast for a pic

RYAN, thanks for the shrimp recipe, I gave it to Mother, she said it sounded good.

DICK, got those pics at a musuem, so I figure it it's safe [maybe]. Real nice bunch folks up there, I ask if I could get some photos in the shop, and they took me right in and showed me around. We plan on going back next month, grandma promised Leroy a train ride.

JIM CG, was some good news on Beth and school, but Roni n hers are still going south I guess. That was the last of the corn for this year, but it'll sure taste good when the snows a blowin.

Ben and I took a belay course at the Y this past Saturday morning and I learned how to climb the rock wall, went up 4 or 5 times. I belayed for Ben and he did great, then he belayed for me and I went about half way up the wall on two occasions.

I picked some more grape and cheery tomatoes this weekend. We have 11 various heirloom tomatoes plants that are still blooming and waiting for the fruit to ripen.

The AC compressor in my truck burned up on Saturday; last month I spent 2K getting the transmission replaced. Now I bet it will be another 1K to get the AC working again, and I just had that compressor replaced two years ago. I was hoping to keep this truck for at least another 5 years, if something else breaks within the next 6 to 12 months I might reconsider getting a new truck. What ya gonna do?

I have two aunts on my mother’s side that are ill. One is having back surgery next week in Houston and it may take up to 6 weeks for her to recover. She will not be able to sit up or walk for more than 20 minutes a day until recovered. The other aunt who lives near Denver is recovering from a stroke. We have been praying for them, both are elderly and frail.

So PC, I see your separate post in the main area got pulled! Thanks again for the pics.

Der John, hope your daughter is feeling better, thoughts and prayers go out to you all. BTW, on that Shrimp recipe I posted on Sunday, you can adjust and cut back on the amount of olive oil as 1 cup might be too much for you, and again it depends on your individual taste. I left out the portion yield on that recipe, but typically that recipe serves four people, with a ½ lb. serving per person. A healthy salad and some crusty bread for dipping would round out that meal nicely. And don’t forget a nice bottle of chardonnay or merlot too.

Once again, nice pics Inch! And be sure to give Mother the Cajun Spice Mix recipe I have listed below. Remember the fresher the ingredients the better it all tastes. See my answer to Jim in the Cape.

Thanks for the kudos on the recipe Dick! Remember, though you can adjust the quantities on the herbs, garlic, and olive oil and spice content to suit your own taste.

Jim in the Cape, thanks for the PDF info, I was looking to buy one of them soon. To answer your question on the shrimp recipe, the spicy level index with 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or Cajun spice mix is most likely rated a 1 on your scale of heat index. Now you can go up from there, but 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper for 2 lbs. of shrimp is not too much at all. When I made the recipe the weekend before last I used close to 1 tablespoon of Cajun spice mix, or you could use Paul Prudhomme Seafood Magic spice mix too. If you cannot find either of these spice mixes, here is a quick recipe for homemade Cajun spice mix that you can make up and store:

Cajun Spice Mix
2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme

Combine all ingredients and store in an air tight container. This mix can also be placed into a food processor and blended for 30 – 60 seconds to combine into a finer powder texture, then stored.

Trent, let me know how it comes out when you make the recipe! Remember, the fresher the ingredients the better it tastes!

Dick, Yeah, it’s the last push for me before school starts. I’ve got a little more time than most kids, I don’t go to school until September 5^th because of Labor Day, but I don’t get out until the 8^th of June, a little later than some schools. I’ve been busy trying to get the last of the major MRR projects done before school starts though, as I figure I won’t have nearly as much time once it does. Homework comes first after all....

I’ve always kind of liked that quote, I sometimes use it as a reminder not to get myself too worked up over things..... 

I made myself another MRR acquisition, a Walthers Trainline GP15. It runs pretty well, although with a little oil and grease it’ll run even better. That’s my next project really, to get that running, and then I’m going to paint it for a local shortline that owns two GP15s (Known as the Wisconsin Northern).

Good afternoon, I am plugging alone on my layout, Managed to get another coat of "water" on and began landscaping the mountain, I decided to model what I know, I doing fall in New England so I have some colorful grond cover as well as some fall trees(I use some dried flowers from my garden, hair spayed and coated with a powdery landscape material. They look pretty good.

Der, I use mod podge for some things(like where I made my lake deeper in some places as an under coat) but I use a high gloss epoxy for the top coat I just like the way it looks. I get my epoxy at Lowes, I found it to be less expensive than the various waters sold by the LHS.

I'm the odd ball in here I model/collect 3 rail O gauge I know there is a clasic toy trains coffee shop but stumbled into this one first and like it. Bunch of great folks in here .

Well just got done placing an $85.00 order for train parts for an engine and b unit and 4 cars and a couple of accesories that needed parts. and still will have to send the engine out for repairs hope it doesn't get to expensive on that.  Probally will take it apart first to make sure its something I can't do but believe it needs a gear pulled and replaced and don't have a gear puller for that.

Hi Fergerson and welcome this is a pretty good place to ask questions and talk( about pretty much everything).

RT, Actually I'm the real odd ball here being the only woman who posts in the Coffee Shop.

Ryan, my water technique came about because of $, I like working with the epoxy best but found for deeper spots it was costing way to much,so here's what I do:

1) For rivers I carve out the river usually from some type of foam(I really like foam especially blue)

2) I paint, I lke to use 2 or 3 different blues and white, I swirl  the color to give it w running water look.

3) When paint is completely dry, pour mod podge down the stream (if on a mountain I may let it drip down the side, if it looks aproprate)

4) when mod podge is almost dry( it may be slightly white in places, those spots will give the impression of rapids) mix and pour on epoxy, when it has set slightly lift up the epoxy to create waves, this may have to be done may times before it looks the way you want.

For lakes:

1) I carve out my lake,( this part is not for the faint of heart)I do this by tapering down the foam so that It gets deeper toward the middle(like a real lake).

2) paint is almost always 2nd with me.Start darker in the middle and lighten as you go toward shore.I like to make a "beach" on mine by painting a section on the shore like sand.

3) once again add a layer of mod podge(don't fill all the way) The big differance her between rivers and lakes is when the mod podge is tacky I like to "move" it around a bit to create texture under the water.I also like to add sand to my beach area doing it now ensures that the sand will not shift when adding the epoxy.

4) When mod podge is completly dry, add the final coat of epoxy.

on this project I had the river coming down into the lake so When the epoxy was tacky I pulled up on it at the base of the waterfll to give the illusion of moving water.It's a lot of work and I am sure there are easier ways but I have fun doing it ths way.

as for the photos I followed a thread (I think one of you guys wrote it) and found fantastic tips on making my photos better now I just need to find a way to post them.  Can I transfer them directly to the forum?(I have 2 threads requesting my pics so would I be better off with one of those photo sites?)

Evening Gang: Well the dentist trip was a bust. With all the pain he couldn't find a problem with any of the teeth. He picked and poked and taped and not a bit of pain. He gave me a perscription for a pain killer and I'm taking some antibiotics. I hope that will take care of that.

Fergerson. As RT said we have a Fergie here already so we'ed better figure out a way to tell you apart with out using all those letters in Fergerson. Besides I have the feeling I've spelled it wrong to. You will find that we are a somewhat lazy lot when it comes to doing anything except MRRing. Let us know some about yourself, please. Besides lazy we're noisy. Have a cup of coffee or a glass of your favorite drink on me.

Ferguson to the coffee shop.

 

Someone (sorry I didn't reply sooner, I never find my name in anyones posts, so I don't post, then I look back and cause' I missed it. Sorry I forgot who it was...)

 

My layout is pretty much a 1" pice of foam, track, roadbed, an incline (the 6% one), and a tunnel portal. I got $145 right now, (my great aunts drove up and they left this morning, so they gave my present ealry....) And I guess I'll have another $150 tomorrow. I guess I'll hold off on DCC and the big boy. One good thing is I have a TON of brio wooden trains 400+ pcs, So I think I'll sell em on e-bay to get some more $$$ for a Digitrax Zephyr and a UT4.

 

I also am thinking about joining the PNR4D HO modular club. They haven't updated their website http://www.trainweb.org/pnr4dHO in a year tho...
