Ryan, if reading about MRR'ing is all it takes, then I’m working on the layout each week, since I am usually checking something in the Walthers catalog, reading a MR article, or digging out an older one... I’d like to be making more headway in that “Build” department, so I can be running even a little switching by Christmas.

Inch and Jerry, I won’t be able to tell you how the Collinsville show was - decided to pass at this time, partly due to a couple of the club member who want to dictate where we stop to eat (they wanted to visit a more expensive place than I wanted to pay for). That attitude sort of reminded me of one of those playground bullies back in grade school, and I decided I wasn’t wanting to play their game. There are about half of the members who can behave more reasonably, but the few PITA’s make it not too enjoyable. Wondering if the trade-offs are worth it. (Okay, end of rant)

Oh, Jerry, I didn’t hear anything about them giving away the N scale stuff, at Collinsville, so you probably didn’t miss much. How’s Sallie doing, by the way? Hopefully she’s up to eating a little something by now.

Der John, the window seat/cabinet looks pretty good! Nice touch with those baskets underneath for storage, too. I’d have to agree with Dick, your dinner plans sound pretty good to me, too.

Jeff - Good to not hear any more accidents from you. Take care of yourself with Christmas coming. It’s almost as good as a soap opera here in the CS lately. I figure 60 Minutes will be sending someone by before long, to do an exposé on the "Great Turkey Theft of 2006"... 

Fergie, hope your Dad has a great Christmas at home with you all. Dan’s comments on the prayers for your Dad. Not having to eat hospital food alone should improve his mood some.

PC, That seaside feed you had yesterday looked good. You’d better be careful about Zoe, though - being Chloe’s twin, she packs a mean punch! Besides, Dick, Mike and Duke might talk to Chloe’s cousin Vinny about you... Well, hopefully not!

Neal, I personally like turkey sandwiches - it’s almost my own (post-)Thanksgiving tradition... And if I want a warm sandwich, I just pop it in the microwave to heat it up. Of course, that requires there to be some left over... (PC: hint, hint...)

Think I’ll ask my LHS to order me a chuck to hold my small drill bits on my Dremel. Tried some more hole-drilling with the pin vise (goodness, that’s tedious!). I got in a Trainline GP-9m (D&RGW, one of my RR’s connecting lines), and it looks pretty good, but I’ll try to figure what additional details it needs. I know the end of the air tanks underneath need a couple of details (was suprised to find out that it is pressed on over a more detailed - but smaller - pair of air tanks!) Also picked up (at LHS) another Cotton Belt 40’ boxcar. I have another Railway Design Assoc. building coming that I won on eBay (Durham’s Tool & Die, which is a bigger building - about twice as long as one of my earlier buildings from RDA - and the Durham kit has a bigger adjacent boiler building (with smokestack) and a longer loading dock (Hydrocal, I think).

Between Thanksgiving dinner at some friends, and a ‘bring toppings and build-your-own’ pizza party a local church singles group had on Friday night, I’m now trying to lose an additional 7-8 pounds I gained since Wednesday. So, I’ve been extra-watching my portion sizes since then. Want to be able to enjoy some of the holiday foods, but not add too many pounds on by 2007.

Hope everyone has made some headway in your Christmas preparations. I’ll have to get out my decorations this afternoon and see about putting up my tree. Everyone take care of yourself and loved ones, and prayers for those of us in need (and those not in the Shop who especially are in need at this time of year).

Hi Gang:

Dick, I see from the post about the HO live steam locomotive that we should now call you Rip Van Winkle. I saw a blurb about it sometime back but being a nice person I wasn't going to say anything. ( Besides that guy beat me to it.) It does sound interesting but from one of the comments it seems to need alot of TLC. I have enough trouble with my 4 inch scale live steamer.

The Cliffs Shaft head frame has a couple of coats of paint on it. It's not finished yet but it looks good. I went to HD and got some spray paint American Classics Sand Stone. The paint comes in several earth tones and I got 2 that looked right. I had tried to mix the colors but gave up as I was wasting too much paint. I sprayed some of the darker shade into an air brush bottle and gave it a couple of coats. It looks pretty good. Now I have to do the detail painting. That is going to be the hard part. Take a look at the Cliffs Shaft Theme Park site and you will know what I mean.

GMT: That's a rough trip to the track. At least everything can be repaired and as you said it will be better. Really the only fair wear and tare thing was the bolt on your car. Well I'm going to go through the written stuff on the Cliffs Shaft and see if I can figure out how the stuff such as conveyers, breaker, etc. are layed out.

Did any of you guys catch the latest email message from Peachtree LHS? They have a Hornsby, English 4-6-2 Mallet, OO guage that runs on HO guage track, that has a REAL STEAM BOILER!!!!!!!! It gets it's power from the tracks per usual, can run forward and reverse, and a REAL STEAM WHISTLE!! How about those apples!!!! The cost is $495, so save all your empty cans and bottles, plus all your neighbors, and get them to the redemption center.....by next Christmas you might have enough money saved for one.

Hello again from Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. I’m 35 pages behind, so won’t attempt a catch up.

 

Fergie: Glad to hear that your dad will be home for Christmas.  I must go back a page or two and see what you posted.

 

The excuse for my absence is the furniture project I had on. Since I’m not a carpenter, and have low tech tools, it’s taken way longer that it would have taken some-one who knew what they were doing. Besides, ¾ inch good both sides and ½ inch good both sides oak ply are not available around here, so I had to make up from ¼ inch gos oak ply. That takes time, but I didn’t run out of glue!

A few years ago we had a bookcase custom made for our living room.

 At the other end of the room there are two windows at right angles. We put benches under them that came from a Halifax Hotel after their renovations. They are 1970s vintage, and covered with cushion pads, served us well, but were getting tiered, if you know what I mean.

So, I thought that replacements in the style of the bookcase would be nice.  Didn’t want to repeat the custom made experience, not only because of the cost, but the chap’s finishing leaves much to be desired.

This is what I came up with (cushions by Kris)

Kris is away to a craft show today, so I “have the con” for lunch.  I’d better attend to that. Roast of beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, red cabbage, carrots, and broccoli. Desert is aple turnover or peach slices with ice cream for Kris’ mom, and peach slices and nsa ice cream for me. If it turns out ½ decently, I’ll send a pic.

   Feel much better now that I've gotten some sleep. Scurrying about doing chores this am then some time for the Giants game (I hope) and then a visit behind the layout door if I still feel ambitious.

   Fergie - good news regarding your dad. Hope it all works as projected.

   Inch - nice pics of the old station. Wish we had a wide cupola caboose at our museum. It isn't parked near the 200 ton crane is it?

   RT - you've had a tough year my friend. Wish I'd known about your flooring project - I was in the area and could have stopped by. Are you putting down self adhesive tile or linoleum? I've done both and the non self stick type as well (lots of mastic all over everywhere) and had an enjoyable time doing it so long as the tile goes on right side up. At least until you go to stand up after hunching over the floor for a few hours. I ended up laying flat on my back on the new floor until my back clicked back into line and whaddaya know it helped set the tiles as well.

   The linoleum was not so much fun and I ended up with a fair bit more trim layers around that room than originally planned. Sort of like trying to wrap an elephant.

   Live fire exercises are always fun. When I was on the Hancock in the Tonkin Gulf we had an antiaircraft drill along with the America where they were supposed to shoot a missile at a drone trailing a target banner. After half an hour of trying to launch we decided to show them how to do it with our WWII vintage 5" guns but hit the drone instead totally destroying it. We caught h*** for it but nicely pointed out that if not for us had it been a real attack, we were at risk of being sunk.

   Knowing we could take care of ourselves was comforting when we were sent to the Persian Gulf in 1973 and the Iraqi's buzzed us with a fighter bomber (French made I think). At that point we weren't sure what our mission was or who was fighting the Israelis that time so it got a bit tense. We all remembered what had happened to the USS Liberty in similar circumstances and weren't about to let that happen again. All that went down this time of year 33 years ago. We stayed out past Christmas and one of my fondest memories of the trip was the Christmas tree we made out of the 6ply fan fold teletype paper we used. The plys were white, yellow, green, red, blue and i think orange and cut and scotch taped together over a couple of empty rollers we had the only Christmas tree on the ship.

   In the grand scheme of things the weekend damage wasn't so bad, just the let down after thrashing to finish the car and the fact that some of it will need doing over again. I aways try to do things a bit better each time and a new tunnel and cover will go a long way towards tidying up the inside of the car. For sure I'm glad I beefed up the engine bay and put in a new undertray there as that is what saved the frame from being a write off. My car will be an easy fix in the shop and I can improve the design there as well. 

   Are any of you running DCC? If so do you have block control or breakers for different sections of your layout? I'd like to do this on mine when I convert to DCC but I'd like the pros and cons to it.

To inch and Neal:  Don't think so.  I've got a lot of RR to build!  I'm just hoping to get the staging and lower deck benchwork in by then.  After that is the helix and the upper deck, more lighting, backdrop, and electrical.  Long way to go yet!  I did get more done yesterday though.  I'll post some pics later.

Went to Hattiesburg yesterday. Went in the new truck. Did well. Took a lot of back roads to see the color and scenery. GPS a little slow. Had to stop sometimes for it to catch up. OH, GPS is MoM reading the map and giving directions.  By the way I didn't tell you all, but after we bought the travel trailor, we were told the older truck would have trouble pulling it. So I had to buy a truck to pull the trailor. Bought an '07 F-250 diesel.  Wish I would have looked at the price of fuel for that sucker. Diesel fuel is $0.50 a gallon more than gas. At 6.5 MPG rating on the truck, NOT GOOD. Couldn't part with the old truck so told the 10 year old grandson I would give it to him when he came of age. He was delighted.

Had a great holiday here, but looking forward to spending the next in the new madeover old house in Hattiesburg.

Morning all well looks like my help has bailed out on me to help lay my new kitchen floor. (and I've never really done it before) So here goes nothing today at least its the type you don't glue down. We are working on distribution of the company's other assets and will be
contacting our subscribers shortly with their options. I can't comment
further as those are both ongoing.

The hobby is undergoing a evolution and while we are proud of our
contributions to the hobby over the years and our forward thinking, we
simply were not large enough to withstand the rapidity of the changes. The
internet, while significant, was not the only factor.

While we have ceased publication, we are not out of business. Should you

Looking for another nice day here, with high in the low 60's. We've had good weather most the week, but will be paying for it next, with rain and then snow by next weekend.

Spent yesterday outside doing yard work till it was time for Leroy's 5'th birthday party. He had a bowling party in Paris. The little poop is purty good. He got 3 strikes in one game and 2 in the 2'nd. It was kinda fun watching those lttle kids trying to throw  those balls.

PC,,, looks like the progress going going well now. You'll be running train before ya know it.

Fergie,,, great news bout your dad.

Nothin really planned for today, just the normal Sunday stuff, then back out in the yard. Mother's got some things to finish up for the county fair's stock holders meeting next Fri. and start packing for her trip to Florida Tue. The next week or so is going to be busy for her, leaves Tue, back Fri., Fair meeting that night, her familys Christmas in Lawerenceville Sat., and her mom's 70'th birthday Sun. afternoon, then KC's 1'st birthday party latter the same day.
