Hi Chris glad to know there's another boat foamy out here, fergie will be pleased as well. That was a great movie I rented it though the theater is way to'spensive now[xx(][V]I try to grab the new Vanwell books as they come out they have published a lot of good reference books on Canada's navy past preasent and future which is a keen intrest of mine[:)]Also since I'm a St. Catharines boy originally and that's where vanwell publishes from I feel I'm supporting the home town. [#welcome] Cheese3, Railroading_Brit, TrainsRMe, and JCtrain!

Fergie, best of luck on your final! And enjoy your time off afterward. [:)]

Ed, if anyone shows up with 1:1, we’ll stick a siding out back...
And if you get your layout up and running, what’ll you do next with your spare time? You're already pretty busy with getting the orange juice shipments out here on time. [;)]

***, are you saying that for your birthday you got plastered?[:D][;)] Was that a carrier parrot on its way to NS with a secret message from Tim?

I'll finish up my decaff and head out for now. You all have fun! I left some warm donuts, cinnamon rolls and bagels on the warming shelf above the stove. Just ask Zoe for one. [dinner]

Blessings on your evening (or morning, if you catch this in the a.m. as you come in),

Hey i'm baaack I just thought of something. Don't call the FD when I get an Idea that burnt ozone smell is normal[;)][^] With all the new members and our general chattyness lately we may hit the 10,000 mark before Christmas so i'm thinking that for that milestone i'll give the winner a free trip and tour of our streetcar museum personally lead by myself. Unfortunately its a post and run! I'm tired so no cofee right before bed, eventhough i use it for all nighters on the layout.

How often do people that meet in the forum see each other face to face?

P.S
ALWAYS remember to be safe when meeting someone in person, meet at a public place and be alert. We don't need anymore horror stories giving the net a bad name.

Jim in Mo- Guess I didn't hide that tiny teeny eensie wee bit of bitterness very well, did I. [;)][;)][:P] I think everybody knows that Alvarez will die of old age, with better medical care than most of us have. Of course, his social life might all be behind him now...
I was going to say welcome to each of the newbies, but i lost count ! It's great to see new people sign on, and this looks like a good crop of 'em. Welcome to all, and please feel free to stop by anytime, the hot joe is always on, and no matter what libation you prefer, I'll guarantee you'll find it here. And the food is to die for, all healthy for you, no matter what you order. [#welcome][#welcome]
First Hobby just informed me by e-mail that they are shipping my 2 Atlas tanks today, looking forward to them. I've got to admit I really like the RTR cars, can't afford many, but still I think they are the way i'm gonna go in the future. But don't worry, I still have about 50 Athearn BB waiiting to be built. Need to get the car shop crew motivated.
Tom- I totally agrre with you. I was always lucky in that i had an older brother who totally and absolutely rebelled against any and all authority, and a mother who never gave up on either of us, no matter how bizarre and ignorant we acted. He ended up a deputy sheriff and I ended up working for the city , so the time we spent in jail was because we were taking others there. Surprised all of us, especially my step-dad. [(-D]
Age makes you realize that the main person who lives with your actions is yourself, so you had better be able to accept the decisions you make. You take care down there in those beautiful Ga mountains.
Minus 1 out tonight, thats -1 American, not those funny metric thingies. I think Lawrence is even colder. And even tho i don't unnerstan metrik i bet the boys up north of the border are in the deepfreeze, and it sounds like NEngland has enough snow to ship some to Britain.

Holy Moly Batman, I was here this morning and we had 3.5 pages since then. WOW

And welcome to all the new guys in past day or so, including:
trainsRme
CFournier (Chris)
Cheese3 (Adam)
RailroadingBrit (Matt)

And of course, welcome back to LilRob!

Stolen welcome, but too tired to write my own after all that reading.

Big cup tonight, was doing some benchwork and the screw gun died before all the legs were attatched. Actually have 1.5 legs attached. Just wanna get the fisrt 4 x 8 done, then wait til the mrs is gone on Sat to do the other 4 x 8. [}:)] [}:)] [}:)] [}:)]

I don't know where that came from musta been here awhile.

Take care all, and goodnight.

Screw gun is charged. Man is on a mission. 11:30 my time, all four legs are attached. The benchwork is standing upright. Repeat the benchwork is standing upright. Still have to add the carriage bolts, but can't make that much noise late at night. Tomorrow I will add the bolts, attach the plywood, and have a 48 inch high honest to goodness train table.

[banghead]The exciting part is I don't use power tools, I don't build anything, I am a full on computer user, and a salesperson. The last 4 weeks I've been helping on a contractor friend, and I've learned a lot. So, I read, and read, and read on how to, I bought the wood, the screws, I charged the wife's power tools, and I built it. I asked a lot of questions on these forums, and now

Wooooooooooooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

we have bench. The first of my 4 x 8 tables is almost done. Tomorrow it will be finished, then 3 more benches to go. But yes, big slap on back, I did it. Thanks to all of you who were patient with my many questions, and inquiry's. [bow]

Hopefully I will have some pics to include in the Sunday pictures.

I imagine it's the same way no matter what web photo hosting site you use. You just put the after the address. A rail images address will look like this, where xxx stands for the three letter identifier for photos in your album.
http://www.railimages.com/albums/edmurphy/xxx.jpg

Remember that you use 'albums' in place of 'gallery' in the address. That's the insider secret to posting photos from railimages (right, Teffy?).

Good morning! This is my first time in the Coffee Shop; I need a cup a Joe! You guys serve Cafe au lait, that's French for hot coffee with scaled milk! It goes well with beignets, which is a French donut.

Glad to see so many like-minded folks hanging out in the coffee shop!

Opps, gotta go.......

Thanks,

Old fashioned measurements have a way of lasting though. Take eggs, ever seen a 10 pack? Apparently the dozen is a unit for which we can thank the Sumerians (about 500BC?) The Sumerian culture underlies the cultures that underly ours. It's thought that they based their math on the joints in the fingers (3), and 12 is a natural extension of that (don't count thumbs) Anyway, that base 3 math has endured, at any rate in measurements.

QUOTE: Ed: how do you post an image from railimages to here?

Ed beat me to the reply, but thisis fine tuning on his info.
Go to your album and right click the image you want to post. go to properties. Record the last letters of the address (we will use aae for the example below)
In the forum type this formula
[ img]http://railimages.com/albums/yourusernameatrailimages/aae.jpg[ /img]
Be sure to leave no space after the [ bracket in each case. I've had to put one in so as to make the formula show here. Good luck. [:D]

[#welcome]Ryan. Zoe can get you anythingyou care to order, and the free refills are on krump in Salmon Arm, B.C.[(-D] Stay longer next time. What scale, if you model or collect.

Was going to attempt to find the upper part of the driveway today, but with the wind chill I don't think so.
Maybe some modelling.
Thanks for the free refill krump [tup]

Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Back from our morning constitutional, just finished off some fresh o.j. and I’ve got a good cup of coffee within reach. Let’s see what’s come in over the wire since last night.

Oooppps, storm warning for the southeast? Sounds like a good time to stay indoors with the trains, Tom. And Phil and the guys in the center of the country seem to be still staying a bit chilly.

QUOTE: Greg:
… We had a 9180 CasIH four wheel drive tractor (roughly 40000 pounds on 8 48 inch tires) sliding sideways…
Like you say, hard for me to imagine, but I’d have liked to see it!

QUOTE: Paul:
… I'd like to see you run Dicks 2-6-6-2 on your layout…
No, no, no, not ***’s, but Bachmann just released an N scale 2-6-6-2 in their Spectrum line.

QUOTE: (CG)Jim:
And if you get your layout up and running, what’ll you do next with your spare time?
Like most of you, actually getting it to a semi-complete stage (all track and basic scenery in all areas) won’t mean there’s nothing to do. I could spend years detailing it. And, who knows, maybe I’ll magically find more space and expand!! [;)]

QUOTE: grayfox:

Us too. We have a number of his CD’s. I first got introduced to his music in the early 80’s. But I’ve never had the opportunity to attend one of his concerts. I did see a tv special they did on one of his concerts, iirc it was the “Tribute” album concert.

Sounds great. And, since I think we’ll get there during the summer, it sounds even better. [:D]

QUOTE: JCtrain:
… How often do people that meet in the forum see each other face to face?..
I think that this group may be un-typical of the net in general. A lot of the regulars have been hanging out here for 6-9 months. Anyway, within our circle, John and Fergie have met up, and I think they’ve recently been in contact with Luc, at least at their local hobby shop. Down in the south, Tom met up with Bill Mathiewson (who used to be a regular but has been busy lately). And Teffy made a cross country trip, visited with John and Fergie in N.S., then visited with Tom and Bill in Georgia, and I think he stopped and had lunch with Jim (jhhtrainsplanes) on the way up. I’m planning on seeing Teffy when I get NOB in the spring. There may have been some others get together, but those come to mind.

Are those the two that were on back order? If so, that was pretty quick.

QUOTE: trolleyrob:

Having lived quite a while in countries that use metric, I’m a bit more comfortable with it, but I still can’t imagine calling a “2x4” a “5x10”.

Congrats on the anniversary.

QUOTE: TurboTim:

That’s great. I can sense your feeling of accomplishment. [tup] Nothing like a progress report with real progress (unlike the reports coming from the FCVN [:(] ).

Welcome to the shop SilverSpike. Yeah, you can probably get Zoe to make it anyway you want. We can even probably scare up some Community Coffee with chicory if you’d like. You need to provide the beignets from Café du Monde, sil vous plait.

Man, I think we’re going to have to start charging a cover charge to get in the Coffee Shop, or just raise prices. It’s getting harder and harder to keep track of the conversations. Or maybe I’m just getting slower.

Later,

Ed

Thanks for the warm welcome, John and Ed!

The weather here in New Orleans, Louisiana is not too cold, lower 50's this morning, and will get up close to 60 today; we are expecting rain all weekend.

I model HO scale RR, and have seen many changes since starting in the hobby as a teenager with my dad back in the early 1970's. I have been on again, off again, and now back on again and into the hobby with a strong desire to stay in for good this time. My younger son also has the hobby bug; he helps in between homework, Cub Scouts, computer games, and Play station.

Currently all my stuff is boxed up again while we are in the process of renovating the train room. Pulled up two layers of carpet and a layer of old vinyl tiles, nothing but exposed concrete slab for now. Started sanding the walls and spackling holes, going to sand and Spackle more tonight. I will start painting ceiling and walls this weekend, and hopefully beginning nights after work and the weekend after next will start laying down some new ceramic tile through the train room, hall, kitchen, and the 1/2 bathroom. A lot of work still ahead, but we are laying down the foundation for the future.

My layout design is freelance but based on local railroad prototype service in south Louisiana, such as: Norfolk Southern, Southern, Kansas City Southern, Texas and Pacific, and I am also looking at possibly adding Illinois Central, CSX, and Union Pacific. We also have a small public belt RR, the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad. They all have or still roll through this area. My plan has the following industries: logging, lumber, coal, cattle, dairy, produce, grain, and LPG production and delivery. Should be enough to keep it interesting. The design is going to be two levels with about 18” between the two.

Thanks for the second cup Zoe and krump!

Hey, Ed, that Community Coffee is good stuff, huh! [^]

You got it, I will bring the beignets next time, Cafe du Monde, of course!

I like the nighttime, only a few posts to catch up on.

Ryan, my friend, good to see you here in the coffee shop. Smoothies are what I drink, so I will take a strawberry one today please.

Ed, how are the oranges doing ? I don't here as much talk about being sick here, so your last batch must have fixed everyone.

der, like the signs, they are cool.

Yes it is getting to be a crowded coffee shop, we need to expand the walls to grow larger.

Almost time to be able to drill holes for carriage bolts. Take care all

Good Afternoon All:

Ya'll sure are a talkative bunch, of course we've got a lot of newcomers.

When the paint dries I'll post a picture of Stephanie's idea of a beautiful loco. I'm just glad that it's Fergie's and not mine. I wouldn't want to look at it to long.

Fergie:
That Genesis challenger runs like a dream but I couldn't get the sound to work and I needed to get it into the garage so I could get the painting done. When it's dry, I'll put it back together and get it out to you.
Who was the guy that asked if any of the posters ever meet each other face to face and that we'd better meet in a public place. I guess that we shouldn't tell him that your family and mine had supper at your house and that wasn't in public, and then you had all those strange people over for an operation sesion. By strange I mean Nearly invisable people. JOHN; if the shoe fits kick with it.

John - Luct & Fergie:
I'm enclosing three tubes of Maas in the box with Fergie's PINK challenger. It'll be up to you guys to get the stuff from him. This is the greatest track cleaned I've ever seen. Some guy just did a thread on it. He used it to clean his wheels also. Fergie and I were talking about it and he said Wal-Mart didn't have a grocery section so I thought I'd send you some and if you like it maybe you can find it in the frozen north. Aggrojones was the guy that got me turned onto it.

Ed:
Are you keeping up with all of the ages - I'm just courious where we all fit in.

Tim:
You'll save a lot of money and make scenery a lot easier if you don't make a whole plywood prarie. I found that open grid is a lot easier to work with. If I was even going to build another 4 X 8 I'd still use open grid sitting on "L" girder with joyses. Tom has used this same form on his layout.

This is the webb site for Rex Heacock and you can see some nice benchwork

http://www.railimages.com/gallery/rexheacock

Rex has been building this layout only a short time, but he has made great strides.

Well I've got to go to work and let this loco dry this afternoon.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Hi all

Chilly and grey here, but not actually raining for once! Have been sorting out lighting on a Walthers Dash 8-40B I fitted a DCC decoder to on Wednesday - I re-used the original bulbs (was a bit worried about them burning out due to the higher voltage but they seem ok so far). Looks pretty good now - wired them according to the instructions with the Lenz decoder so now have directional, constant-intensity lighting.

Spent about an hour or so this evening helping out at the local theatre - one of my other hobbies. Every January we put on a pantomime (not sure if these are found in the States, basically it's an adaptation of an old fairytale-type story, this year's was Cinderella), and there's another group using the theatre next week so we had to clear everything down to the stores - about 1/2 mile away. Piled half a ton of stuff into the back of the Disco, set off, I drew the long straw in that I got to ride there and back rather than having to walk pushing the handcart loaded with scenery too big to fit in the truck! Major problem being when we got to the storeroom, all three lightbulbs in the building had gone meaning we had to put everything away by torchlight until some bright spark decided to try new bulbs...Cue chorus of "why didn't we think of that"! Always amazed we've not blown anything up down there, the wiring's a little eccentric to say the least!

Tomorrow's plan: Ikea in Cardiff, with a detour to a hobby store I found nearby on our last visit (great place, didn't know it existed until recently but they seem to have pretty much everything and anything, hoping to pick up a couple of Fleischmann HO passenger coaches to fini***he formation I've been building for a while).

Nothing else to report for now, thanks for the warm welcome to all!

Matt Hi
Where's the Hobby Shop in Cardiff you found?

It's called "Lord and Butler" and it's on Penarth Road - address is "The Pumping Station" - it shares an old Victorian-era pumping station building with an architectural salvage yard (hobby shop is in the basement). If you go to www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/counties/shops/wagla.php and scroll down, they're about halfway down (there's a map on the site, but it wasn't very good - I resorted to driving down Penarth Road away from Cardiff centre and simply looking for something that looked like a pumping station on the left - it wasn't hard to find!). Well worth a look if you're in the area, they had some US-outline models last time (mainly older Athearns and some Bachmann) and loads of other equipment. Good luck in finding them, it's well worth doing so!

Well folks,

Which means a weekend of modeling!! I go to the local hobby shop tomorrow in Madison, I have to order some Athearn Blue Box GP38 handrails, and pick up some oil to lube up a Athearn Blue box GP 38 that I got as a present. I hope the guys at the LHS can direct me to the right stuff.

I also have to get some more work done on the building, but probably not tomorrow, as I’ll have a full day anyway, but definitely Sunday. I better get going soon too, as I’m going out for dinner tonight, probably going pretty soon. See ya later!!!

[edit]Forgot to say Hi to our new people here today, a great big [#welcome] to all our newbies from me, you'll like this place!

Thanks Matt
I'll give it a go. I work in Newport and get to Cardiff quite often.
