Mornin all, order of biscuts n gravey,OJ, n coffee please Zoe,
Looks like another not to bad day, high bout 80, mostly sunny.

PC, looks like you've got a great rail fanning view your bedroom. Thanks again for all the photos.
Theres a lot of old yards in need of repair, It's hard to beleive they roll loaded cars there without derailing.  It'd be a trick to model one like it.

DUCE, good luck with the future plans

Not much planned for the day other than outside work, gotta pick some stuff in the garden, and trying to finish some projects, won't be that long till the leave start falling, noticed yesterday theres some starting to change already. Hope to slip a little train time in also. Hope ya'll have a good day

Cary:   We are moving to Fredericksburg, TX.

Then you will certainly want to visit the LHS where Trent works.  San Antonio is only about 70 miles away.  Nice shop, very well stocked.  Friendly staff (at least Trent is very friendly!)

Evening All: Well the cows are all up and out of the pasture, the dogs are put up and I'm thinking that I'll head for the basement. I've been kicking around an idea all day that I want to check out on the layout. I'll know if it is worth persuing later.

There were a couple of UP trains go through while we were on our way to check out the hay fields. I dought that it will be worth having the fields baled, there just isn't enough grass. We get charged a minimum of 2 bales per acre and that could get expensive if we don't make that. Rain to the north and west but none here. That figures.Eight Ball [8]

I'll see you all tomorrow. Have a good night.

Ed, yep, that is the infamous transfer caboose. It doesn’t run much on the layout because the extra weight (stacks of glued pennies) is accidentally all to one side, and so it leans. But I use it as a photo prop quite a bit. One of these days I’ll get the caboose cabin off of the base and re-center the weight. I purposefully only used some tack stuff from Woodland Scenics to secure it so I could do that if necessary. Problem is there are some detail parts that are glued down that have to be removed too, and so that’s why I haven’t gotten around to it. It’ll get done.....someday.

Happy Jack, We’re trying to get in to Trainfest this year, but it’s not looking good so far. We’ve been submitting a application of interest to the guy who runs the show, but so far he hasn’t told us anything back. But then again, sometimes you don’t know if you are going to make it to Trainfest until less than a month before. So we’re still holding out hope, but things aren’t looking too good for this year. We plan to submit an application earlier next year though, and see if that does the trick.

Hi all, hope you are all doing well today. I am eating ribs on a stick as I write this. Got a new four burner grill and I have been burning it up!

Ed, that's alot of trees, I was thinking you had maybe 40 or 50, guess I was only off by 500.

PC thanks for the pics, Gp9's and 7's they are my favorite units along with FA's & F7's. Who's was it to begin with C&O, Pennsy?

Der, been there done that with the railzap stuff, same outcome made it worse then better. You'll notice a big improvement with metal wheel sets.

Well I'm off before I get more Bar Q sauce on the keyboard.

Dick:   You mentioned that you were afraid that the Mango trees would get big and shade the Orange trees,, so why not plant the Mango trees along the NORTH side of your property?? No shade problems then.

Interesting thought.  But you forget that we're down here below the "Tropic of Cancer".  So in the summer the sun passes far enough north that it's actually to the north of us for several months, then straight overhead, then back to the south.  We have planted most of the mangos along one edge of the grove so that the impact is minimized.  We'll wait and see how things develop as they grow.

By the way, having the sun to your north, or directly overhead, at noon really screws things up when you're trying to figure out directions.

Regards

Ed

Good Day all!

We had a great weekend and just did not want it to end, but then you got to pay the bills!

Worked in the yard and picked about 3 pints of cherry and grape tomatoes from the garden. The grape variety are sweeter than the regular cherry, they are all so good though.

We re-arranged our living room and created a better arrangement for watching TV so we could all have a “good” seat.

Ran the usual Wal-Mart trip too, getting supplied up for the week ahead.

Saturday I made a great shrimp recipe; Garlic Herb Broiled Shrimp, and was it tasty. I used some fresh purple rose garlic, fresh basil, thyme, rosemary, and sage from the garden. Chopped all the garlic and herbs and mix them with a stick of melted butter and a ½ cup of olive oil. Then I tossed 2 lbs. of shrimp in with the butter mixture, added some garlic salt and Emeril’s Original spice mix, and some fresh ground black pepper, and then dumped it all out onto a sheet pan, broiled for about 10 minutes and served it with some Brussels sprouts and fresh peas. YUM!

Spent a few hours at the Y on Sunday afternoon, Ben and I ran on the treadmills for 15 minutes and got a little over a mile run in, and then we played racquetball for an hour and then we went to the pool to cool down and met Monique the “Sun Worshiper”, can you say SPF 50? The day could not have been nicer, temps in the mid 70’s, sunny to partly cloudy, and the pool water temp was refreshing and invigorating.

Lisa, you are doing a great job on your layout, getting in daily activity is great!

Hey Duke, yep I like to use them fancy tools to help me get er done! And your racquetball skills must be way over the top! I cannot even imagine being about to fit in that much time into playing, Ben and I reserve a court about 2 – 3 times a week one hour each time. I am wiped out after each one too!
Looking forward to Apex, can you send me a PM with the details, date, location, etc…

Welcome back Ed! Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Now the OJ supply here in the CS will get somewhat back to normal. And getting used to the new forum takes a bit more patience that most of us care too… I have a similar forum issue too! Sometimes it take me three or four times to get my post the way I want it to look.

Inch, sorry about the daughter leaving, but now you have a reason to make a trip to Florida. Nice rail side photos as always.

Duce, congratulations on the new born!  And a warm welcome back to you too! Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] back Trent, long time eh!

Luc, thanks for the funny photos!

Noah, nice photos of the crossing and freight activity, layout is coming together there.

Jim I started the benchwork in May and have been trying to make a little progress each week. The past week has been slow though and I have reached a point that requires more thinking it through before I proceed. There is a window in the next wall and I am sorting through all the options, I wanted to work on it this weekend, but the weather was so nice I could not keep myself indoors for vary long. Good luck with the finances and prayers are with you.

Luct, great joke there!  Thanks for the laugh!

Paul, great way to use an old CD player, and I guess you could gear it down a bit to move the turntable at a slower speed.

Gumby, sorry about the DCC issues, but hopefully they will get worked out for you soon.

PC, great collection of photos you posted there, when you found time to do anything else?

Cheers,

Ryan

The trackage is all old NKP rails.  I'm not sure who owns them now, I think maybe NS.  Anyways, the mueum is the only one who ever uses them, from the fairgrounds on up about 50 miles up the line to the north.  The museum also maintains them.

Morning all!

Hi Zoe!  I'll just have a Moxie please,....thanks!  Great shots der!

DIAL UP WARNING!  THESE PICTURES ARE VERY LARGE!

Some of these pics needed some clean up work to be at all presentable, so please know that some have been photoshopped to enhance the overall quality.

Well, I've been out for a couple of days, so let me catch you all up to speed.  OK, about this weekend,....what a weekend!  Saturday morning I woke up hours before the family as usual.  After prayers and Bible reading I set out with camera in hand to see what was going on.  I knew the fair train was running, so I had that going for me.  Deciding that the fair train would be a good place to start I headed down the tracks from my house about a mile and a half.
Now let me explain a little.  The fair train is a train that runs from the little whistle stop ( http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Captured2006-8-1200012.jpg ) of Fishers, Indiana train station ( http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Captured2006-8-1200006.jpg ) down to the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis during the time the state fair is running in August.  It's run by the Indiana Transportation Museum ( http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Captured2006-8-1200004.jpg ) and they do a great job.  They bring out some cool equipment for this and I thought I'd share some of it with you.  For small troubleshooting jobs they bring along this guy; http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Captured2006-8-1200003.jpg

Their mobile office is in here;

 http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Captured2006-8-1200002.jpg

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Captured2006-8-1200022.jpg

So anyways, I awaited the arrival of the train.  I checked out the Fishers train station in the mean time.  It's a few years old now and it still looks great.  Here's a shot trackside

and here's the street side

I notice a decent crowd beginning to gather

and right on schedule it arrived.

I decided to check out a town a bit north of here that I'd never been to.  I was suprised to find some really cool things going on in this little one horse town.  This is what's going on in Lapel, Indiana.

And then there was this little guy, possibly the coolest find of the day, sitting in the shadow of a huge grain silo.  He was definately ignored, sunk in the dirt up to his frame, but way cool!

And that was Saturday!

Again, Sunday I woke up long before anyone else.  Bible reading and prayer, and I'm off!

I swung by to check out the daily preparations for the fair train.

With that done I headed to Anderson Yard to see what's up there.  Not much was new there, as a matter of fact, it looked like only one thing had changed from the week before.  There was a new caboose.

Seeing as that didn't pan out to much I decided to head to the CSX MOW Repair shop in Indy.

And just before I left a local mixed freight pulled out of the yard for it's daily run.

Well, that was pretty much my weekend!  It was lots of fun.  I think I might have to do this every couple of months or so.  It's good to just cut loose every now and then, you know?

We have 4-6 varities as they are grown here in Qld, we get Bowen mangoes and R2E2 and a few other ones I cant remember... they are $1.98 each roughly to 2.98 and about $12 a kilo, if there is a shortage you can expect to pay $4+ and in the "offseason" we get imported Mexican mangoes..

derJohn: I’m 10 pages behind. Sorry if there was something some-one asked me way back there, I’m starting at page 155.

Good choice, but you still have a long way to go since we’re on page 1156.

Impressive yes, but check out UKSteve’s OO scale layout for his children, Done in a week.  Here’s the shot from page 1144

Hey, thought you weren’t going back?

I’m using a Centerline car with rubbing alcohol as cleaner.

Yeah, I know.  I thought I was going to get one of those (based on your recommendation) when we went to Houston in the spring.  Turns out the LHS didn’t have it in stock as they thought they had.  Maybe this fall.

In the stores we get very small and ridiculously priced, up to larger and better value, but they all seem to be a similar breed.  My mother (who spent some time in OZ before WWII) held that the only way to eat mango was in the bath!

Local mangos on sale by the roadside out near our orange grove are running about $5 for a crate that contains between 15-20 kgs.  Obviously they charge more in the stores, but not that much.

Fran and Junior get a kick out of seeing me peel and eat a mango with a knife and fork.  They’re both from the “eat it with your hands and get it all over yourself” school of mango eating.

Regards

Ed

Just a quick one tonight.

Der: That looks like it is a GP-40. The three fans appear to be the same size.

Ed: That's better, I can put the magnifiers away.

Well I'm going tohead to bed. Have a Good Night All.

Hello again CS people.  The grandchildren are safely delivered back home, and so there is peace and quiet once more.Approve [^]  Did finally get to see “The Atlantic” VIA in full sail southbound for Halifax outside of Truro.  The second loco was painted in a Spiderman motif, which was weird.Alien [alien] I saw  a "Telus" VIA loco on my Ontario trip this summer. At least it was advertising a service.

Was able to get a couple of photos in the week, while on a trip that took us through Stellarton.  Does a Torsion Beam measure twist in the rails?  Like how high one side of the tracks are compared to where they should be?  Any how, this is what Railink leases out to folks who want to know for sure.  Looks like it doesn’t get out much either!Big Smile [:D]

….and the other end of it

That caboose behind the torsion beam was coupled to this …The paint looked brand new.  I’ve had to dull it down a bit brightening the photo to get some of the truck detail to show.  That’s a paint scheme I would really like to copy for some of my locos.  On the other hand, there was a RailAmerica loco from the Goderich-Exeter Railway Company in Ontario (a 167 mile short line ex-CN trackage, now owned by RailAmerica) GEXR 4022   I think it’s a GP38. #s 4019 and 4046 are GP40s, apparently, but the fans and filters and dynamic brakes suggest a 38 to me when I compare photos.  Those more knowledgeable, please elucidate.Clown [:o)]  It was a good way off, the sun obliterated the display screen on the camera, and the optical zoom that I though I had set didn’t.  So this is cropped from the middle of a much larger photo.  Again, I’ve brightened things up to get a look at the trucks.

<>That said, I’m off to see how many pages behind I am, and if it’s worth trying to catch up, or is starting over the better plan.Big Smile [:D]  No contest, I’m 10 pages behind. Sorry if there was something some-one asked me way back there, I’m starting at page 155.

BTW- How do ya know who's on with this new format?
If you find out, let me know!!!  Seems like you’ve found your niche!  Quite a change from the force eh?

NJBill:

it is DCC time.  I like it will be confusing at first then once I see the light I'll be wondering why I thought it would be so difficult.
…Sounds like me, except I’ve kept very much to the simple stuff, especially when it comes to functions in the locos.  The real reason for my switching was to escape blocks, and having to isolate locos that weren’t in use.  That part is working out just dandy.Thumbs Up [tup]

Mike:  Thanks for the photos.Thumbs Up [tup]

Luc:  Great lawyer jokeLaugh [(-D]  We have a “Blessing” here on Sober Island…”May you never need a lawyer better than ***** ********”  The obscured name being a locally known practitioner!

Ed

Being in a really humid atmosphere, and pretty close to the sea, we really have our problems with corrosion.
…that’s my experience here.  On Vancouver Island we were about ½ mile from the sea, and up about 600 feet. No similar problem.  Here, maybe 400yards from the sea, and 30 feet up.  Major problems as you describe.Disapprove [V]

I’m using a Centerline car with rubbing alcohol as cleaner.  I’ve tried a couple of proprietary fluids, and they just added to the problem.  RailZip was one, and I forget the other.  I’m slowly replacing all my plastic wheels for metal, and trying to run every day.

OZJim:

YUM! Mango! what variety??
..must be nice to have the choice.  In the stores we get very small and ridiculously priced, up to larger and better value, but they all seem to be a similar breed.  My mother (who spent some time in OZ before WWII) held that the only way to eat mango was in the bath!Big Smile [:D]

BTW, I wasn’t worried about you because I think you were handling that eBay thing very competently.Thumbs Up [tup] Approve [^]
