I scored BIG today!
I stopped in the LHS and they were clearencing a bunch of N scale stuff!
I picked up 7 undec. outside braced boxcars from Atlas, 1 single dome undec. tanker from Atlas, a flat car from MP, and a set of three Swift 36' wooden boxcars from Microtrains, all for $80!
I practically did cartwheels out of the store!
Regular price on the three Swift cars was $50 all by themselves!

Veterans Day is Saturday, so I thought I’d post some trivia bout it
1918, known as the Great War, WW1 ends with an armistice, between the Allies and Germany at the 11’th hour, on 11’th day, of the 11’th month.
1919, on Nov. 11’th, President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day. The original concept is the suspension of business for a 2-minute period, beginning at 11 am with a day of also marked by parades and public gathering.
1920, at the suggestion of church groups, President Wilson declares the Sunday nearest Armistice Day should be marked with services promoting international peace.
1926, congress adopts a resolution requesting the president issue a proclamation calling on officials “ to display the flag of the United States on all government building on Nov. 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies pf friendly relations with all peoples”. Over the next decade, most states establish Nov. 11’th as a legal holiday. At the federal level, the president issues an annual proclamation.
1938, on May 13, congress passes legislation making Nov, 11’th a federal holiday, Armistice Day.
1941-1945, 1950-1953 WW2 and the Korean wars create millions of new veterans in addition to those of the Great War, already honored by Armistice Day. On Nov. 11’th 1953, cobbler Alvin King of Emporia Kan., organizes the town annual Armistice day as an observances of “All Veterans Day”. The Kansas Governor attends and suggest similar observances in every US city, prompting US Rep. Ed Reese of Emporia to introduce legislation that would change Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
1954, on Jun 1, President Eisenhower signs the legislation changing the name of the day to Veterans day. On Oct 8’th he issues the first Veterans Day proclamation.
1968, congress passes the uniform Holiday bill t ensure 3 day weekends for federal employees by creating 4 national holidays on Mon. as the new date of observance for Veterans Day.
1975, President Ford, signs legislation returning the federal observance of Veterans Day, to Nov. 11, to take effect in 1978.

Had a good trip to Pineville today. The drive was good, the traffic was light. I stopped by the LHS and picked up a new Atlas hopper for 12 bucks, don't see deals like that everyday. I went on to the hospital from there. Physical therapy went well, the damage was light this time. They only had to remove the tops of the caluses on the right foot and just a light filing on the left foot. It still smarts though. From there I had to get my feet measured for special shoes. Maybe in two or three months I can get out of these A-B walkers. They do a good job of letting me get around but they're uncomfortable in the extreme as the braces bite into my legs. I've had to wear them for three years now and that is three years too long! If I had taken care of myself in the first place I wouldn't be in this prediciment today.
If any of you have diabetes, do exactly what your doctor tells you to do, no matter how inconvient it is. You'll thank him or her in the long run, believe me. I can barely walk without aid and I can't run to save my life! Not even a short distance.
Another reminder for you diabetecs and others with weak immune systems, get that flu shot and have the date of your last pnuemonia shot checked. Get it if it's expired.

We saw a show about the Cass Senic Railroad last night at the museum. Lots of Shays and Heislers and 9% grades. Very interesting stuff.
I had asked the CFO what she wanted to do for our anniversary and she came back with a trip to the Grand Canyon so that's where we're going. Been past it a dozen times driving to and from the races, but never stopped. Turns out there is also an excursion railroad at Williams and if we fly into Las Vegas the Hoover Dam is on the way. This could be a cool trip.
Inch - Sorry neither you or your CFO are coming out this way, but Uncasville is all the way on the other end of the state and not an easy drive from there to here. The way the weathers been she may need all the same kit in Fla that she would have here. My peeps in the Naples area are all complaining about cold weather though I suspect that means they've had to wear long pants instead of shorts every day.
Dick - As far as the elections are concerned, I saw a mandate for change in international policy, not Carte Blanc for the Dems who in any event have changed alot of the words in their tune. I think the mess in Iraq just got to everyone with a conscience and it took this to get anyones attention at the White House. We can't change too much too soon, and in the immortal words of Peter Townsend "Meet the new boss same as the old boss."
The DRM booth is the Danbury Rail Museum booth at Amhearst. I'll be doing that show and probably the Cheshire Ct show next Sunday. I need to get some more yard time in so the show at the Mid Hudson Civic Center this Sunday is out. We are scrambling a bit to get the plow truck up and running and check the antifreeze levels in the rolling stock that have it so that will shoot this weekend at the rail yard.
Glad to hear our wounded are making progress towards recovery especially Jeff and Steve's better test results.

November 10, 2006 (Friday) is "Take your model train to work" day! Since we are off for Veterans Day tomorrow I brought my trains to work today.
Nothing fancy, I brought some HO scale stuff, two diesel locomotives, a Norfolk Southern GE Dash 9-44CW, and a Kansas City Southern SD45T-2, a Southern covered hopper, and a Norfolk Southern bulkhead flat car. I was thinking of making a 3' display base with roadbed and track but did not have time to put that all together, could be something to shoot for next time. My next door cube co-worker models S gauge and we talk trains most mornings; it was fun sharing and showing off my model trains.
Layout Progress Report
Finished the dry-run of track for the staging yard last night, and then something funny happened. I decided to hook up my old MRC DC throttle and test the tracks out. So I took off the old lead wires, slapped on some brand spanking new 20AWG wires and soldered them to a short piece of flex track. Then I attached that to the yard lead track and put on my new Norfolk Southern Dash 9-44CW diesel and tested every switch and track configuration in the 11 track staging yard. Yea buddy! Not one hitch, and it felt good to run trains again, been over a year and a half since I ran some trains!
Now I just have to attach the track to the roadbed! That is tasked for tonight’s train adventures.
