My bad.  Trains should have been in there.  Big Smile [:D]  For me, I need music to work by; be it unpacking or driving my trains around my layout.

Chris

The "music" is right outside the window.  CSX's double track main is just across the field outside the trainroom window!

That could only be better *if* it were a Norfolk & Western main line Sigh [sigh]

I was thinking maybe this was why the count has been off on the pages for the last few days. I was thinking they took PC's reply to swdave's, but it was still back on page 1077? I don't know what happened to theposts this week.

Hi Guys,

This is completely unrelated to your message or this thread. I'm over here visting from the Garden Railways forum trying to find out if there is another  forum or place where On30 is discussed. I tagged onto your post because I couldn't find a way to post a new message. How do you post a new subject on this forum?

Thanks

Fergie, Don't worry, I'm still around, atlhough a little more infrequently now. It's just that during the school year I don't have as much time to check out the forums and such, so I may be gone for a week or two at a time before I pop back in again. Usually my only chance to check out the forums is on weekends or nights when I don't have a whole lot of homework (like tonight). Otherwise school work comes first, as much as I don't like it.....

Flip, it's good to see you back in here. You'll get used to the forum eventually, it just takes a little time. I know it took me at least a few posts to get used to how to work the thing.....

Boy, we had one heck of a storm around here at about 4 this morning. It's just about the worse storm I can remember seeing with my own eyes. It was lightning a lot, but more than that we had marble to golf ball sized hail, as well as rain that was literally coming down in sheets. It was gone in only about a half hour or less, but it was sure violent while it was here, and it dumped an absolute ton of rain.

I did end up with a very successful day of railfanning on Sunday as well. Not a lot of trains, but the weather was perfect, and the few trains we did see came out great. The colors we out, and even though they were in more muted tones, they still looked pretty good. For the shots, take a look at these two albums of my photos. The first Album is of one specific train that we chased a good ways down the Mississippi River in Minnesota and Iowa, and the other is some shots from the BNSF in Wisconsin along the River as well. My favorite shots are probably the last two in the BNSF album as well as the last three in the first album. To see larger versions of the thumbnails, just click on the photo:

http://wsor3807.rrpicturearchives.net/archivethumbs.aspx?id=16214

http://wsor3807.rrpicturearchives.net/archivethumbs.aspx?id=16244

Well I suppose I better be going, as I've still got a lot of stuff to do tonight yet. I'll see you guys around.

Good evening gents...first time in CS today, very busy day working PC issues with new Beat software, then spent the afternoon outside doing a multitude of chores in prep for Winter.

RYAN: I like what I see in VISTA OS, as people get to see some of the nice features, and much better security, they will opt for it. Will it be as fast a conversion as Winp8/Me to Xp? I don't think so, but for the reason that Winp8 and especially Me, were very unstable, people had a lot of crashes and other problems, so they jumped for Xp, which is a very good system.
You are making excellent progress on your layout, the trains will be running soon!!!

FERGIE: Ya, I kind of mispelled NewFoundland. That happens late at night when I can't see the keyboard in the dark. I need keys that glow in the dark.
How did Lisa ever break TWO wrists? That must have been some fall.
We continue to keep your dad in our prayers, I know it is very tough on you, I sense that you and he are very close.
Glad to hear that the new contractor is starting soon, if the weather holds, and he gets things closed in before the hard Winter cold, you just might see it done before Christmas.
As for weather, tell Lisa that an El Nino has set up in the eastern Pacific, and that is why the hurricanes have been few this year, and the frontal systems have kept them away from us also. El Nino will give us a cold Winter, with normal snowfall, except for some coastal areas that might receive more snow.

NOAH: I saw the results of the damage in Chicago caused by that same storm that hit you. It was one of the worst to hit Chicago. We will get the remnants tonight, but greatly reduced. We are going to get the heavy rains in some areas of New England.

Well that's about it for now gents, see you later,
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Well you just mispelled it again, so it's not just the light.  It's Newfoundland, all one word, no capitalization of the F.   Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

But we Newfies are a pretty forgiving bunch, so don't worry about it.

Fergie: Best wishes for your father. I know what Lisa is going through with physical therapy. It'll hurt at first, but it'll get better, trust me on this. Been there with a broke knee and two shattered ankles.

Pc: Nice to see you back on. I guess now the real work begins with the unpacking. Been there and done that many, many times. When you're a military brat, you move a lot. I've been around the world twice in my 46 years. Most of it was good, some of it, I don't care to think about.

I had to go to Alexandria today to get the caluses peeled off the bottoms of my feet, so they're going to hurt for a couple of days. I stopped off at the LHS and picked up a new #6 RH turnout and a 50' FDC plugdoor boxcar from MDC (Roundhouse products)

I may stop back in later. Evening all.

Howdy Fellers,

Fergie- Hoping your dad continues to get better, glad the cast is off and speaking of that type of injury tell her to take it slow and listen to the DR. YOU NEED the down time w/the layout. Will continue to lift you and yours up, please rest in the Lord.

Been busy as usual but gotta go trouble on the home front.

Trent: I hope the trouble is not serious.

I got my new boxcar put together. I'll give it a dusting of matte-finish in the near future, then treat it to some rust and some black dye/alcohol wash.

Evening Gang:

PC: Welcome back. The easy part is over with now you have to unpack and get everything put away. Of course getting the new train room squared away is the fun part. Have you got a track plan going yet?

Fergie: Still thnking about your dad. It will take some time. I'm sure Lisa is going to enjoy the phiso. Yea right. I kind of enjoyed mine when I had my right rotater cuff repaired. Of course I was doing it on company time since it was a job injury. I made sure the phiso was at a place close to home so I left work early and just went home after. That drove my super nuts but there wasn't a thing he could do about it. Evil [}:)]

Walt: Welcome in. It's going tobe nice having a On30 modeler here. I've looked at the stuff from Bachman and really like the critters and industrial type cars. The dump cars are really nice. I have to say my mantra. I don't need another scale, I don't need another scale. I'm doing HO, 1.5in and 4in 7.5in gauge.

Time for bed so I'll say Good Night. I've got an appointment with the dentist tomorrow morning for a crown. Oh Joy.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Quiet as usual down here.  A cool front blew in today and the temperature never got much above 90º.  Plus it rained off and on during the afternoon, and stayed overcast, so it was actually bearable.  Of course, the rain gave us a bit of trouble as we had gone out to the orange grove for some routine maintenance work.  We got most of what we wanted done, but got cut short a bit.  I have to say that the crop is looking good.  The mandarin oranges are just starting to get some color.  I'm still picking some of the reina, a bit ahead of time, but they are good enough for juice for me.  Hope the girls in The Coffee Shop are adulterating the stuff they are serving to you guys with enough sugar to make it palatable.  Another couple of weeks and they won't need to add anything.

Jeff, nice new car.  Always nice to see new additions.  What are you going to cover all that mud with?  A layer of latex paint first?  What are you planning for ground cover?

Don't know if I've posted this link before, but it's an interesting blog from an old guy who is in the process of making a long series of train trips.  He often goes several months between posting, but he recently posted a couple of new entries.  Since it's a blog type site, you need to start at the bottom, and read the first entry, then work your way up.  He apparently spent some time in his youth as a hobo, and he makes some interesting posts regarding his past.

http://johnhedge.livejournal.com/

Getting ready to hit the sack.  Catch you guys tomorrow.

Ed

Ed, I'm going to go over it with some thinset ti fill in the cracks, then scenic with WS ground foam, real dirt and sand, some rocks and a splash or two of paint. If it comes out anything like my last layout did, it'll be an attention getter.

Some good and bad news coffee shoppers.

I have decided to sell ALL of my US prototype Locomotives and rollingstock and buildings, to be replaced with a Queensland (Australia) theme. The reason is, there is now more available to us than when I first got started in MR 10 years ago, it is also fairly cheap. I will have to sell all my track and turnouts too, as in QLD we use 3' 6''  gauge track so i need to get HOn3.5 track. Don't despair guys, I will still visit the MR forums and check up here and there, and I'm not selling EVERYTHING i'm keeping my Genesis SD45-2 and a couple of cars. everything else is going. Sad [:(]Smile [:)]

I will keep you updated on the happenings in the garage, and i'm sure you will enjoy seeing a foreign prototype.

Now...

Ryan: thanks for the advice on the Laptop, I will check out Dell I will hunt around for the best deal.

Noah
: good to see you back! I hope school is good.

Good morning and top 'o' the day to all of ye. I'll have 2 eggs, sunny side up, sausage, bacon and some toast. Some coffee with that, please.

Well, I'm just getting ready for another day of making training bombs for the government. Working on RPG's today. Doesn't that sound like fun? Just a plastic tube with sand in it and a plastic cap on either end. It's exactly 24 inches long and weighs six and a quarter pounds. Don't know how many, but it'll be a lot.

Here's the credit card, enjoy. Oh, and the fire extinguisher to put it out with.

Good morning all!

Supposed to rain today and might be here for a few days, we will see how the forecaster’s predictions pan out.

Thanks for breakfast again Jeff, Chloe set me up with the same. Dinner [dinner]

Duke should be on his way to Apex now, supposed to arrive sometime tomorrow, and we will attempt to meet up with him on Saturday.

I am planning to head to Train Buddy train shop tomorrow on my flex Friday off, pick up a 3-way turnout and some tunnel portals I ordered. Also going to review my slow motion switch requirements, wiring etc with Kim the shop owner, he is quite knowledgeable. Big Smile [:D]

After that I am going on a dirt collection expedition, get some samples around the CSX tracks, some area fields, and dirt roads in the area. Then I am going to try to get some earth tone paint to match the colors of the dirt for the layout. Yeah!! [yeah]

Oh, and I will be putting on a batch of corned beef and cabbage in the crock pot first thing Friday AM.

ModelTrainLover - that was a nice surprise to find those tie plates, looks like a good start to the spike collection.

Inch - what kind of flowers are you planting this time of year?

RT - good luck with the cold. Have a bowl of tomato soup on me, the heat and steam emitting from he soup helps clear the passages.

Noah - very nice pics, I especially like that coil car and the ones you took of the colorful consist past the river bluff, great shots!

Dick - speaking of Vista OS, Microsoft announced even stricter security for beating out piracy attempts on this version. I agree with you, it will take a few years before we see any proliferation of the Vista OS overtaking XP or the Longhorn server overtaking Windows 2000 or 2003 server. I know some companies that are still on the Windows NT 4.0 environment, which is just about 10 years old now.

Ed, the juice has been just fine… hick-up…as a matter of fact….  hick…. the girls might even be adding a shot or two of cactus juice to that last batch of OJ…...oops…. Oops [oops] Mischief [:-,]

And thanks for the hobo link, going to have to read that one later…

James, while it might seem like a lot of work, your move to local prototype modeling will probably be for the best in the long run. And probably easier to model since you are closer to the prototype, making trips to the states for prototype research could have gotten expensive.

J.R. my parents and grandparents used to play pinochle til the wee hours of the night, us kids would sit around and watch. I never learned how to play, but I enjoy Canasta. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Pinochle was my parents game also.  I learned it growing up and used to play it at home.  I learned bridge in my early 20's and never went back to pinochle.

 SilverSpike wrote:

Darn, corned beef is virtually impossible to find down here.  I usually smuggle back a couple of packages when I make a border run.  I really miss it.

Well, you know that the FCVN ships only pure (virtually) orange juice, with no preservatives added.  If that tank car gets delayed arriving at The Coffee Shop the juice just might be starting to ferment on its own.......   Not that there's anything wrong with adding a little cactus juice, just to, as Dr Hook would say, "to purify the brain".

Played a bit of canasta too.  But I've forgotten about everything I knew about playing cards.

Good morning gents, the front moved through early this morning with wind and 0.19" of rain, no big deal at all. Now it is a cool 48F, clear blue skies and breezy. The leaves are all tinged with color now, and the "stressed" maples are all red right now.

RYAN: I saw that article from MS on Vista pirating. MS has coded the DVD's so that If someone makes pirated copies, they now do not have to send info back to MS ( the computer via the DVD program) it is all taken care of locally, and they will not receive any support manually or automatically from MS via downloads for any patches, or security fixes. I hope it works because these pirated copies cost all of us in one way or another.

ED: I enjoyed reading those journals from the Hobo, what an interesting life this guy had. The Amtrak trip he is planning in Phase2 is something that I would love to do.

FERGIE,LUC, DER JOHN: Better keep an eye on your wells, the earthquake in Bar Harbor, Maine has caused the water level in the wells at Acadia National Park to drop 3 1/2 feet, and are still dropping, but beginning to level off. Sometimes it affects wells quite a distance away also as the bedrock get fractured.

See you guys at lunch,

Good morning.

I got this from Dick and wanted to share it with you.

A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder.

The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, snapped-off a fire hydrant and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window.

For a few moments, everything was silent in the cab, and then the still shaking driver said, "I'm sorry but you scared the HELL out of me."

The frightened passenger apologized to the driver and said he didn't realize a mere tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much.

The driver replied, "No, no, I'm sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years."

I fell off my chair laughing....

Ed,

Here is a recipe for "How to Corn Beef" to make your own corned beef. It is an old recipe I found and you can "corn" just about any cut of beef. I can remember years ago one of the local restaurant meat purveyors in New Orleans used to sell a whole corned steamship round of beef, which is the whole hind leg of a beef animal, usually weighing about 50 - 75 lbs with the bone in.

"Corn" your own beef

1 beef brisket
1/4 tsp salt peter
1/4 C warm water
2 T sugar
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp paprika
1 T mixed pickling spices
3/4 C salt
2 quarts water

Place the meat in a large crock. Dissolve the salt peter in the warm water. Add the next
four ingredients. Dissolve the salt in the 2 quarts of water. Mix everything together and pour over the meat. Be sure the meat is beneath the surface of the liquid. Refrigerate for three weeks, turning the meat once or twice per week. Prepare according to any standard recipe for corned beef.

Salt peter is commonly used in veterinary medicine. Some drugstores carry it. King Soopers pharmacy will special order it on request.

By the way, I read the live journal and that guy has quite a story to tell. I bet he could get someone to write a screenplay and it would make a great movie highlighting the odyssey he had years ago.
