Good Morning! I’ll have a couple glazed donuts and a tall coffee.

Oops.... looks like I done did it again! Lunch is on me fellers....

Made another batch of fresh tomato and herb soup yesterday, and got enough for you all to have some for lunch today too! Chloe, be sure to keep the soup pot warm…

Another great weekend, clear blue skies, and mild temps, no rain, slight breeze, it was great to be outdoors.

I spent about 2 hours in the train room on Sunday adding an L-girder and four support braces to the 2 L-girders on the peninsula benchwork section. Also added two 8’ joists for the benchwork section. I also attached the middle section benchwork legs to the floor with 3 ½” deck screws, and had made it very sturdy.

Dick, great intro and info on pressure cookers, I really need to get a hold of one of those. I found some great recipes that uses pressure cookers, too, seems to cut the cooking time in half too!

Hey, we did turn on the fireplace logs for a few hours the night when that cold front came through, looking forward to curling up and getting some ready done when winter does make it’s inevitable appearance.

Luct, virtual tomato loads per your request and prayers for the CFO both sending your way. Here’s hoping Gloe gets better soon.

Inch, where is the hillbilly hide away anyway? I know what you mean about the "#$%^ grass"! We spend about 2 hours in the yard on Saturday; hopefully it will be just one or two more cuts before it stops growing.

Jim, thanks for the info on the RDA kits, eBay does have some good deals! Once I get most of my benchwork completed and then after I mark out all my existing un-built structure kits in inventory I will be able to tell what my needs will be. I am now leaning toward craftsman type kits such as RDA for my future structure purchases.

Chris, there are 3-4 train shops and hobby shops in my area. Which one are you asking about? If it is Train Buddy, here in Wake Forest, it is a train shop only. Serving mainly HO and N scale items, and while it is not a really big place in the way of a show room or retail shelving, they do have an operating HO layout and a small N scale module as well. Kim is the owner and he is very knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to answer questions. It is my personal preference for many reasons, (not in any particular order) it is only a 10 minute drive from my house, Kim offers anywhere from a 20% to 25% discount on all advertised prices in the Walther’s catalog, it supports the local economy, it is the only train shop I know of that is located in a horse barn and has an in ground pool just outside the front door. It is not your typical train shop.

Shawn, according to the MR email newsletter that I got last week the November 2006 issue is to hit the shelves next week on October 10th. We went to Barnes & Noble Friday night and the October 2006 issue was still on the magazine rack.

Ed, looks like you had a grand time at the convention, and getting to meet such distinguished guests must have been a real treat too. Thanks for the update! Photos were great too!

I like Fran’s philosophy; we like to sleep in on the weekends too! But it sure makes for a groggy Monday morning and usually the only day I have a second cup of coffee.

Oh, and I really like what you did on the weathering of those tank cars, Bragdon system sure is neat, eh! I have used them too on weathering a structure last year.

Noah, sorry to hear that it happened so close to you and that the principle did not make it! Thoughts and prayers go out for him and the families. Good luck in school and keep your chin up!

Fergie, your dad is on our prayer list and hopes for continued progress in the recovery and health.

Steve, glad to see you back in the CS, good luck with all the health concerns, our prayers are with you.

Nice pics from Downunder ngartshore350! I like that chemical plant too!

Trent, sounds like you have been putting in some hours there. Yep, cooler temps make it easier to work on the railroad, eh!

Hey, Flip, how you doing?

Jeff, you got any mud left? Looks like you are going to town on that scenery there!

PC, hope the move went well for you. Come back soon...

Back to work now…..

If you're going to keep talking about it, please post the recipe.  My mouth is watering and it's just past breakfast time.

Also added two 8’ joists for the benchwork section. I also attached the middle section benchwork legs to the floor with 3 ½” deck screws, and had made it very sturdy.
Yeah, screwing it to the floor like that is pretty sturdy.  Expecting hurricanes up there?

For use of the customers??

Thanks.  I was surprised at the good results that were so easy to achieve.

Shock [:O]Shock [:O] Here we are on page 2!? Well I'll just fix that. BUMP!

Ed: Nice weathering job. I'll have to give that stuff a try.

There is a train show on the 14-15 of Oct. I had the 14th off as a floating holiday so we could haul trash to the county barn. It's county clean up day and dumping is free. Since we live only about a mile from the barn we can really make use of the free dumping. Now I have to get the trash hauled before I can go to the train show. I don't want to have to spend my train money to pay for dumping later.

Bobby Hall is going to be at the show autographing her book so I want to get her to do mine. It's been quite awhile since I've seen her and I'd like to say Hello to.

Lunch time. See you all later.

Afternoon all.  Just a quick check-in since I am at work and should be doing other things (like my job).

Ryan, yes Train Buddy was the one I was talking about.  I am a Horribly Oversizer, so it sounds like they have what I need.  I may have to make a run down that way some time in the near future.

Ooops, boss is coming, gotta go

That is the way to post now.  Welcome to the new forum software.  Oh, yeah, almost forgot, there is another way.  Instead of 'reply' you can use the 'quote'  function.   Laugh [(-D]

Good afternoon gents, been away a few days working on the new RC1 Vista Operating System. I installed it on Friday afternoon, and this updated version of Beta tested VISTA OS has to be a clean load, you cannot use "upgrade", so that means ALL your programs need to be reloaded. I saved all my data of course to an external HD ( HardDrive), but there were problems. One problem was that each email I sent or replied to, went out THREE times. Not good for people with small mail boxes or Telephone Modems. That problem I corrected, then I had no sound, so I had to go to Creative Labs Website and download their Beta driver for Vista OS (Operating System). Now I have sound again. The new VISTA OS really is very nice as is the new WINDOWS MAIL which replaces OUTLOOK EXPRESS.

By the way, for you folks who use Firefox.....now that Microsoft has really strengthened their Security flaws with Internet Explorer 7.0......welllllll, now the bad guys are attacking Firefox, and Mozilla announced that they are aware of the flaw and are looking into it.

I still cannot get the dropdown boxes when I hit REPLY to any of the forum threads. All I can do is type words. I have font size selection, no happy faces, no color control for names, etc. Still have to work on that problem. Didn't work with Beta version 2 either.

OK, back to drawing board, talk later guys.
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Evening all, decided to brave the dialup and check in this evening.  My bill for this service is due now and I was hoping I wouldn't have to pay it this time Sad [:(]

Hope everyone and their family/friends are doing well or getting better at least.  I saw a couple new names while reading at work today so Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the new folks.

Noah, I now know how you feel about the school shooting.  Just today around noon a news story came out about a shooting at a school in Lancaster County not far from here.  Seven dead so far, seven more critically injured, and several others injured as well.  And this was at a one room Amish school in Paradise Township near the Strasburg Railroad.  They had 27 students from grade one to eight.  No word yet on whether the shooter was Amish or "English" as they call us.  When it happens at a place like that I begin to wonder what this world is coming to.

Guess that's about it for now.  Just wanted to check in.

Just got in from roberts swimming lessons, he got his 10 meter badge today, thats about 33ft in english, Nice one Robert.

The new BLI C30-7 didn't arrive as expected today so it's another day without the interogation from the CFO

Congratulations Jerry

Well, I'm not going to be doing any work on the layout tonight. I been busy all day making mortar and RPG shells for the military. That's the contract I've been employed to work on. There's no need to worry about anything, they're practice/training rounds made from lengths of ABS filled with sand or concrete and weighted to the specs of the actual article.

The contract is expected to last about a week and a half. Maybe something else I can work on will come in during that time.

OzJim, seems you are right, they're saying three dead now.  Initial reports said seven.  I'm sure there was a lot of confusion right after it happened.  This does not make sense.  I grew up with Amish as neighbors and friends.  They are very hard working peaceful people that pretty much keep to themselves.  The shooter was a dairy truck driver that apparently had a grudge of some sort against girls and picked the school at random because it had no security.

I subscribed to both for 3 years.  I recently dropped the subscription to "N Scale".  Take my word for it, the one you want to subscribe to is "N Scale Railroading".

I subscribe to several magazines, including Model Railroader, Trains, Classic Trains, Railroad Model Craftsman and N Scale Railroading.  If I could only subscribe to one it would be Model Railroader.

Hi Guys,

Inch: You keep telling me about the clouds. They are coming (after i learn how to paint cloudsQuestion [?])! Got suggestions on painting clouds? I was looking at using the spray gun.

Paul, Flip & Jim(JimRCGMO): Thanks for the support guys!

Jeff: Thanks for the support, the mud looks like it's pregressing well! You must just about live in here by the number of posts you have.Big Smile [:D]

Ryan: Sounds like you made good progress for two hours work.

OzJim: I have been drooling over an EOS350DTongue [:P] for a while, got paid our bonuses and I have been drooling so long the EOS400D is the latest thing in that price range! More Megapixels and a dust cleaning function with the 400D. Buying new isn't cheap at $AU1110 plus $AU225 for a 4G memory card. I have the lenses from another Canon so that's why I'm sticking to Canon, similar to yours, 20-80 & 70-300 off the top of my head. I never really considered a pentax, sounds like you did well getting it for that price?! Did you get that eBay issue with the old camera sorted out?

I have also ordered a Athearn Genesis F3A&B unit in UP, but that's it for the new toys!

Back to the backdrops this weekend and then no progress for three weeks while I'm in and out of Newcastle for some MCC Testing. Having to work weekends to get the boards to site on time!

Sorry to hear about the shootings! Must be terrible for the school and their families.

Regards,

Nigel

Oh fudge ums.

I haven't posted for a while.

I blame you middleschool.

Nothing new today really, had soccer practice, did homework.

Only special thing for the past week is my team one our soccer game on saturday. Nothing new. We've been undeafeted (SP?) for the past three years. (And I haven't scored one goal. HA!)

Tommorow is band. I am bringing in my Hi-hat, because Mr White (my band teacher) told me to bring it in.

I haven't done any model railroading lately, becuase I have been playing with rokenbok. Most of you probably have never heard of it. If you wanna find out. go to their website. Rokenbok.com  I really find it fun.

Well I got to go to bed now. (it's 9:00 over here...)

PS. I dislike the world series. (because it's the reason my soap opera, House has been cancelled til November. I think it is much better than baseball,  Cause' apparently in the next epposode house gets arested.)

Fair enough! I bought the Pentax, because myself and my uncle have a whole bunch of lens' and every Pentax lens made from 1985 or similar is compatible with the current DSLR bodies! how good is that! and yes that price makes it the cheapest DSLR on the market! I'm really pleased with the results and if you go to my photobucket site, the most recent pics are taken with it. a 4Gb card!? 1GB should have done ya Tongue [:P]
as for the old camera, I haven't heard from him since early August as I threatened legal Action Smile [:)] but unfortunatley i'm still banned from eBay! i've tried telling them i was rorted but they won't unban me until the buyer says it's all sorted. I was kind of over eBay anyway, and if i ever see anything or want to sell anything again, i will just sign up again or use my uncles account. oh well. I really don't have the time to go any further at the moment (in court).

I hear that the town the shooting tookplace has no police or has next to no crime? I also hear now that four children have died and seven remain critical. it is very unfortunate! Sad [:(]

Just getting ready for another day of making training rounds for the army. Today we'll probably be filling the tubes with sand and concrete.

Flip,,,tomatters are $1.89, they got up to $4.00 last winter

Dick,,,,, I have the same trouble with boxes on Firefox, and our paste doesn't work either. Every thing still works ok oon micro soft.

Attaboy,,,, shame bout what happened back your way. Don't know what this world be coming to anymore.

Steve,,, glad your days getting better, hope it keeps up.

Jerry,,, congrads on the new grand daughter, pretty name too.

RT,,,you can use the camper and it might be far enough away from the CFO when the fire works start there.   Mine got all upset, awhile back for spending $9  on Ebay I can just imagine what would happen if I spent that much. Move to Canada, maybe

Nigel,,,, I dry brushed my clouds on, used flat white paint them kinda just dabbed this brush round on the outs, then blended artists colors for th shading. Here's a link to pic of part on mine

Good Morning All,

Regular and one of Bills doughnuts please Zoe. I'll skip Jefferys' big breakfast so I can stay awake through lunch. Got back from Danville, Va at 1:30 (thats 13:30 Fergie) yesterday. The weekend went well though we broke a conrod in one motor and ventilated the block, the other six ran well picking up podium finishes and a few class wins as well. The race results can be found on www.SVRA.com.

Drove the Kenworth down and back, the first longish trip in it for me this year. I'd forgotten how slow it was up hill. Did get to see a lot of the yards and trackage near Roanoke from my higher vantage point. Just south of the city are some curved yards with massive numbers of coal cars brimming full and lined up a quarter mile in each direction from the overpass. Impressive. With all the industry in the backround and lots of trackage the scene is crying out to be modeled (Ed this is your cue to tell us who did and where the article is). As you drive on route 220 to Martinsville the tracks snake through the valleys crossing back and forth under the highway. The N&W deserved its' reputation as hard working and senic, the grades never stopped and the hills are gorgeous.Kudzu is becoming a problem though as entire hillsides have been consumed by this Japanese scourge (the vine that ate Georgia). As an aside areas here in Connecticut are also becoming affected by the same vine though if it eats Greenwich I won't be so sorry. Coming north Sunday there were a couple of streches where long runs of track could be seen to the side of the road. Unlike a lot of roadbed in the northeast, the ballast and track looked perfect and all the signals were showing high greens. There were signs of recent activity around Danville as well and as usual we drove by the plaque marking the site of Casey Jones' wreck each morning on our way to the track.

We go to Lime Rock this Friday for the last time this year and then to Road Atlanta for the SVRA finale the 17th. After that I have Summit Point in Novenber and we're done racing for the year. The big news is that I may be in line for a month of racing in New Zealand this coming February. Our primary driver is really interested in going so it may happen. Lots planning for that and I'll also have to suss out transport between tracks and maintainence issues (like where to work on the cars). I guess I'll also have to figure out where the railroads are there in case the oppourtunity arises. Watch this space.

I'll try to catch up on the posts later this week - all for now. Colby - the track will ship today UPS. Watch for it. CUL,Big Smile [:D] J.R.

Morning,

Thanks for checking out the shelves for the latest issue of MR for me gang. Didn't run across a copy here... but I am in south Florida so the November issue is surely still in route.

Mornin all, I'll have a coffee please.

Careful there GMT, you're talkin 'bout my home town.  Born and raised in the 'Noke.  N&W and the VGN are my favorite lines to model.

When you came through Roanoke on I-581 or 220, the yards that you saw were, IIRC, on the old VGN line, which came from the fields in West Virginia.  The next thing that you passed that was on your right was the current NS shop, and across from it on the left was the Hotel Roanoke and the VA transportation museum.  Not much going north on I-81, but if you were to go south, and head to Blacksburg, and pick up 460 to WVa, you would have a beautiful drive by the New River and with the ex VGN & N&W on either side of the river.  Some great scenery there.  That is my dream model.

Can't help out with the layout, but I do have a comment about Casey Jones.  I'm not sure what the marker indicates near Danville, but Casey didn't have his famous wreck there.  He did it a few states over, in Vaughn, Mississippi.  Here's a shot of the siding itself, and the adjacent museum.

There was a famous wreck near Danville.  It was the basis for the old song "Wreck of the Old '97".  But that wreck occured on Sept 30, 1903.  See the following link, which has a sound version of the song itself.  Worth clicking on just to hear the song.

Casey had his wreck on April 30, 1900, three years earlier.  See:

Good afternoon gents....a stunningly beautiful day here today, clear skies, temps in 70's no humidity. But that is coming to an end as a front is moving in from the West.
Our beighbors to the north in Maine, along the coast near Bar Harbor had a 4.2 earthquake this morning. Knocked some rocks onto the roads, etc, but no serious damage.

RYAN: Get that Pressure cooker yet? It is one great thing to have in any kitchen, and the best for canning by far. I see Duke may be visiting you on his trip South, he will try as time allows.

COX47: Congrats on another grandchild!!!!!! The holidays will be fun this here at your house grampa!!

Had an unexpected repair to do on the Furnace this morning. The circulator was running continuously. The PC board in the Zone Controller box failed, and, the manufacturer (ARCO) no longer makes them!!$#@#$ NICE !!! So, we bough a new one made by TACO, which I find is better controller anyways. All the status LED's are on the outside of the box, unlike the ARCO box which were inside.
It took me about an hour to remove the power, the thermostat wires for 4 zones, as well as the zone valve wires and 24V circulator wires and replace the same on new box.
All checked out fine, so we are back in business and none too soon as this weekend it is predicted to go into the low 30;s with a frost, so it will call for heat.

FERGIE, LUC, DER JOHN: I see you guys missed another hurricane, and unlike the last hurricane that passed by earlier, this one didn't wash any homes into the Atlantic in New Foundland.

See you guys at supper time, things to do outside on this beautiful day in New England.
