Jeff-All I have from way back are two things --1) an Altair 800--don't ask where that came from. and 2) a Commodore vic20.And, yes the dang thing still works---the Altair not so much. There are two other old--or rather retired computers here---a 486 used to cache a bunch of stuff for a printer my wife uses for her work, and a Pentium III used for storing Hard drives being used for sound recording/ experimentation. These things still have some use---

I've been down to my parents place helping my sister and niece open the pool for the season. They needed my help in getting the tarp off it. It takes three people minimum to get if off without dumping the trash on it in the pool. It's tied down along both sides and the ends. Now I told both of them to leave the north side tied down so that when the south side was pulled over to the north the south side of the tarp wouldn't end up in the pool. My sister had no problem with that. Her mind works in a logical manner. My niece however isn't a logical thinker and she just couldn't see how leaving that side tied down was going to accomplish anything and untied the part at the shallow end while no one was watching. Came time to pull the tarp off and my sister and I get on opposite ends of the tarp at the south side of the pool and pull it over itself to the north side. At the deep end everything is just fine. At the shallow end the unsecured edge of the tarp slips into the water and dumps it's load of gunk into the pool. My sister and I both glare at my niece and I told told her 'I told you to leave it tied down' to which she says 'I didn't know it would do that'. I had only told her ten times what would happen if it wasn't tied down. Guess who gets to give the pool it's first cleaning. It isn't me, nor my sister. That leave the niece! I bet she'll listen next time.

***Jerry, that fiddle yard came out nice. Can you still reach the back of your main layout?
Haven't made it back into the train room. Been pretty busy with the farm lately. With an extra horse (Cold Mountain) in the barn to care for and horse rotations etc..., it takes longer to get everything done. Oh, the female mallard is now walking a good 10' before resting and able to stand for some period of time. Looks like she's going to be OK.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Rob

Rob glad to hear that the mallard is recovering. I hate to see any animal get hurt!
I'm still cleaning up and putting away from the last two days work at camp. I think I will sleep well tonight. Here is what we were finishing up today. New steel roof for the Trading Post at our Boy Scout Camp.
Found that none of the photos of the turkeys at the old Depot property came out well. The Huge Tom Turkey was strutting his colors when I drove by, but as soon as I turned the truck around and came back and parked by the side of the road, he made himself as small as he could and headed for the brush....... The White Deer on the site are a major tourist attraction around here and they will let people come up close to the fence and photograph them. Except during the Fall hunting season!
Hope you all have a great night!

Rob...I just pulled the fiddle yard to front of layout to make it easier to work on..When I get it going again I'll push it back to back to its back drop...Hows work coming on your layout?
You all have a good nite...Jerry
Good morning---boy is this a lively place this morning.
Chloe, I'll have a coffee and the breakfast platter please.
Well, an interesting night with fireworks for the kids in the neighbourhood. Used the sports field behind us for the display---gonna be doing that tonight as well as we've got quite a lot of them for the weekend--between myself and 3 of our neighbours we must've bought a coupla large boxes.
I'll be at the window booth watching this day develop-------
Mornin, an irish coffee please Janie. Got a sunny but chilly day [high 63, NW winds] forecast here. We got out ½ inch more rain Fri night into Sat morn. The baseball jamboree was canceled due to 2" of mud
Mother had an appointment over in Terre Haute Friday so I rode along. We found a 100-ton crane sitting on the old Pillsbury siding.
And I got these two, one I think is an old PRR single tower and the other some parts of an old switch.

We'd planned on a day trip to Tulip Ind today to get some pics of the trestle close to there and maybe catch a train crossing [INRD]. We decided to put it off till next weekend, hoping for warmer, drier weather. So, it's a honey-do day and some outside chores [maybe some MRR time slipped in]. Good morning. It's 66, cloudy and a bit damp. The high is expected to around 74 and there's a chance of thunderstorms.I've put together some ideas, some my own and some from other modelers, concerning the GE U30C. Here's my plan of attack. The roof mounted radiators at the back of the shell will be removed and a dynamic brake housing and grilles from a SD40 will be added. The GE exhaust stack will be removed and an EMD exhaust stack will be mounted just behind the horns back of the cab. An EMD blower housing will be mounted just behind the step down from the cab and two EMD radiator fans will be added to the top of the hood between the stack and DB housing. That should be just about pegging the plausibility meter. I may even throw in an EMD cab to push it over the top.Today's Weather for:Sundown, LA 71446-6114 5/17/2009Wind Chill: 68°FHumidity: 93%Dew Point: 66°FSo Far TodayHigh: 68°FLow: 68°FRain: 0.01"Rain Rate: 0.00"/hGust: 9mph NNEThrough 8 AM...a large area of mainly light rainfall...with embedded heavier showers...will continue to slowly sink southeast across east Texas and central Louisiana. Fired up my credit card again! Durn it! Well it took 3 hours to call me and the bill was $615.10 for front brakes only. Needed new calipers to replace the original equipment calipers. One was freezing and not releasing. Had NO CHOICE. That is on TOP of the $565.00 I spent just the other day for new tires and front end alignment, on TOP of the $154 I spent last week to replace the blower motor resitor pack. On TOP of the $987 {already paid for} I spent last month on the O2 sensors and exhaust system. Part of the problem is that I'm replacing 11 year old original equipment, which at 120,000 miles and 11 y/o is wearing out. Knock wood everybody that I am DONE for at least a year.... If I had the money all together at once, I'd buy a newer used vehicle....but then I could get into a similar boat SO...
That will mean $0 for any type of get away this summer. A few Steamtown trips maybe...the cheap go and watch them play with the 1:1 Steam trains. With my other half's hours cut and me spending money to make sure we have at least one good vehicle to get around and get to my many Dr.s appts. there we will be po' folk for a while {that's PO' cuz we can't afford the other "o" and the "r"} . Property ideas may have to be put off too.....

Galaxy, look at it this way.......doing all this work right now should pay off in a few years as the value of the car is probably bottoming out at around 11 years and will soon start to go up again. You're simply being a shrewed investor who's buying low and selling high!
Hi all, it's been four weeks since the wedding and things are finally starting to settle into a comfortable routine again. The discs with our wedding pics have made the rounds of our families and are still intact. Since Jim asked for pics here is a couple. First the blushing bride:
and the happy couple:
I haven't been working on any train stuff lately but I'm hoping to get started converting the garage out back to a train room soon.
Guess that's about it for now. See you.
Mornin' everyone!
A very, very cool day here today. That is cool temperature, no cool as in "oh yeh, right on"! May get all the way up to 53°F this afternoon and we have a freeze warning for tonight. May be a good thing I haven't planted the garden yet........ The sun is going to shine for most of the day though so I probably will mow half the lawn. It needs it.

Galaxy, what Philip is referring to is that with all the new parts and the price of them going up due to fact that they don't make any of them any more means that the "junk" value will increase. The junk dealers will find the car more valuable as they can sell the parts for a better margin....... Been there, done that. My last year of college (1968) and my first year teaching I was driving an "antique" 1956 VW Bug. I bought it for $250 and drove it for almost 3 more years. Original engine, transmission, and just about everything else. It hadn't had a lot of use, only 230,000 miles on it. Died on the first day of spring in 1969. Transmission just wore out. I turned around and sold it for $75 to a guy who rebuilt it into a Dune Buggy (remember those?) and had it back on the road for several more years. That was back when I taught in Waverly, NY. Galaxy, you must live somewhere near there I bet.
BTW, Galaxy, you might consider a short day trip over to the Rochester and Genesee Valley RR Museum this summer as well as Steamtown. We are located in Rush, NY and have 2 weekends a year where we are running antique diesels and cabooses up and down the line. You get entry to 2 different museums and can ride the trolleys and the trains all day for $7.
I will have a busy Sunday today as I have a lot of items to get finished and ready to print for some things happening next week. So I better take my shower and get started with the day.
Hope you all have a blessed and fine day!
Here's what I've got so far.

No we're not ones to go 'round spreadin' rumors. Really we're just not the gossipy kind. Oh you'll never hear one of us repeating gossip...so you'd better be sure and listen close the first time.

In order to keep my position as Master and Supreme Ruler of the House, I don't argue with my wife.
I'm a small town boy. A product of two people from even smaller towns. I don’t talk on topic….. I just talk.
Hee!!! Haw!!! The guys were funny and the gals... well, you know. Gee, those were the days.....sigh....Now it seems eveyrthing has to have a messeage instead of being just plain fun.
Weather's kind of funny today. At 5:15am it was 72 now it's 53, go figure.
Work on the U30C progresses. It definitely starting to look like a product of my Frankenstein fun factory.
ewl01The guys were funny and the gals... well, you know.
My wife says I only like the show because the girls wore low cut blouses. I never noticed.
Good afternoon all,
Sunny, kinda cool for mid-May...but PERFECT (unfortunately) for mowing the yard. Loving Wife has re-certified in advanced shoveling and wheelbarrow operations as she continues to mitigate some unsightly areas in the yard.
JERRY: I'd have whoever sold you the chair come out and check it...a battery that new shouldn't leave you stranded. Also...don't hesitate to call the fire dept. for help getting out of the chair and to your portable oxygen if you don't have neighbors, family, etc. close by.
JEFF: The Dr. Frankenstein of locomotives... Hey, with the right A-Dapta-Kit ( plus a little JB Weld and duct tape)...anything can be fitted to anything right??? There's all the "plausibility" you need...
So....will this be a SDU30CJ? USD30-CJ? Some variation?
ewl01Now it seems eveyrthing has to have a messeage instead of being just plain fun.
That's precisely why I watch very, very little on TV anymore. My "regular programing" now pretty much consists of "Emergency!", "Adam-12," "Dragnet," and "24." The oldie shows are on the Retro TV Network... the ONLY good thing I've seen in the switch to digital TV.
Time for a slice of apple pie...then I'll either do some stuff for w**k, or finish mowing the yard (maybe I'll go disrupt the rooster neighbor's picnic...), or a nap, or "dream it, plan it" (can't build it...yet). I dunno. THAT kinda day.

Chris, those shows are on sat. tv here which of course I don't have. Cable offers better service in this area but their programming could be a bit better. I'll have to check the nether regions of the channels as they now go pretty high.
Jeff, I like the way you're thinking with that engine. Can't wait for the final results!
Good afternoon. Stopping in right quick.
Its Sunday, so that means the wife is watching "Soaps". Basement time.
Well her (wife) operation is this Friday, and the mother-in-law is coming in Thursday. Thats fine. BUT.....Now the father-in-law is going to go to my wifes operation Friday as well. Now these two are separated. Well as long as the don't start fighting. I did tell my wife, "that could be my entertainment". SO who knows what will happen.
I guess I better go. I will try to get back in later.
Here's a patched, painted, renumbered hopper for ya!!!

Hello
It was really good of Attaboy to stop by and share photos of the wedding. What a wonderful occasion! Attaboy, what is the name of the "blushing bride"?
Perhaps, more of you can share photos of their spouses and significant others. I know some of you already have done that, but others should feel encouraged to do so.
Speaking of such, here's my better half, Shelley. I know some of you call your wife the "CFO". In my case, Shelley actually is a retired CFO. Here we are when we were in London, and as you can see, she has ways of keeping matters under control!
Oh, never mind. I'll go back to working on the layout.
Feel free to post family pix!
