Hey JEFF: If you're still wondering what to do to your U-boat...why not drop an EMD hood on it. Seems to me CNW re-powered an ALCO or Baldwin, and put an EMD hood over the new engine.

I've seen something like that. It was an EMD SD40 with a CAT prime mover. Looks pretty strange with them big wings on it.

That was the SD-CAT, a re-engined SD-45 done as a pilot program when CNW was trying various ways, means, and schemes to rebuild/re-power the used SD-45's they picked up.

I found what I was thinking of: In '62, two Baldwin AS-16 locomotives went to EMD for re-powering. They came back with the Baldwin cab and front hood, but had "GP-18/GP-20 style long hoods." As per Diesels of the Chicago and North Western... The Baldwin engine was pulled, and replaced with an EMD 567.

EDIT: Hey...here's an idea for ya Jeff, why not replace the U-boat's "hammer head" radiators with SD-45 rads? Just a thought, your's may differ significantly.

Problem: I don't have an SD45 body to cut up.

Finally today there's a bit of good news. I found the decoder for the GE U30C.

Afternoon all from SunnyGetting HOTCal.

Just got back from a session at Jesuit that started out as a 9:30 rehearsal for Bacclaureate next Wednesday and turned into a MONSTER Jam-session with Ed Trafton, the Resident Artistic Genius at the school.  After the rehearsal at 10:30, I was called into the Dean's Office to figure out next year's schedule with the three Choir Directors and the Ellen, the Assistant Principal in charge of scheduling.  Leah told her that she only needed me 3 days a week with Beginning and Concert choir, then Phil chimed in that he needed me 4 days a week with his Chamber Singers, and Fr. Wanser chimed in and said that he needed me 4 days a week with Liturgy Workshop Choir.  Then Ed Trafton, who is Music Director for the school Masses grinned at me and said, "I've got to have him for Friday Masses on keyboard."

Ellen kind of grinned at me and said, "You were thinking of 3 days a week? "  I just looked around and said, "Not any more" in my best Peter Sellars/Inspector Clouseau accent.  Seems I'm back there full time.

After, Ed and I went back into the Choir Room and worked on the music for Baccalaureate.  He's doing piano, I'm doing keyboard (though I'm rehearsing on a second piano), and we get halfway through and he starts 'jamming.'  Okay, 'jamming' is generally what Jazz musicians do.  We're both CLASSICAL!  The two pianos are side by side, he gives me an Evil Grin.  I give him an Evil Grin back.  And we start WAILING!  Variations on everything we know.  He suddenly starts this really WILD theme, like it's a test to see if I know it.  I know it.  He blinks.  I grin.  He grins back.  Kids start coming in, we're just ROCKING and grinning.  We come to this HUGE conclusion, the kids go nuts.  Screaming and jumping up and down.  Ed and I just grin at each other.  "How did you know THAT?" Ed grins.  "I like Ginastera,"  I grin back.  What we did, was jam on an Argentinian folk-dance called the "Malambo", which is about as wild a dance as you can get--at least in classical music.

Anyway, Ed and I have decided that we're going to do a duo-piano concert next year for the school's annual Fund-raiser.  I couldn't be happier.  This guy, who is also the Drama Director at the high school, is absolutely INCREDIBLE!   We're still laughing about it.  We may do standard two-piano repertoire the first half then spend the second half just jamming and having the time of our lives.

Shortest retirement in history, LOL! Tongue

On the MR front, singnals are still working well,  Going to give THE PROSPECTOR a run or two tomorrow, if it looks good, I'll post on WPF.  Someone on the Forum said they'd like to see a photo of my Pullman-Standard SCENIC LIMITED, only with my big L-131 2-8-8-2 ahead of my 4-8-4 like Rio Grande ran up the 3% on Tennessee Pass.  Only problem is, they don't run that well together.  I tried.  (Okay, here's the argument for DCC, I know! Shock  Tell you what, you get up a collection to convert my brass fleet, I'll do it.Evil)

Anyhow, that's the news from this side of the country.  Oh yah, "Uff-Dah" is losing more hair, getting into his summer coat.  LIke, CLUMPS!  He sure looks WIERD.   At least, according to Spooky.

Best to all, prayers for those in need.

Tom Parsons: The redoubtable Mr. Hallaran came through this afternoon. Here's his email:-

Dear J.W. (I apologize for not asking your name this morning), I’ve looked through a most of our standard references and have come up with the following, albeit brief, information.  There are a couple of versions. 1) From Tom Patterson, A Colony for California: Riverside’s First Hundred Years.  Riverside Museum Press, 2nd Edition, 1996.            p. 163.  “The first carload of anything to be shipped by the new system from California was packed by the Griffin & Skelley packing house and put into Inter-            Ocean’s warehouse [an ice-making and cold storage business on land provided by the California Southern Railway,a subsidiary of Santa Fe RR] on February 8,             1887, for 24 hours of pre-cooling.  It moved east the following day.” 2) Rather than type in a long-ish passage, I instead have provided a link below to the source.  It is taken from a multi volume set called The Citrus Industry and published by the University of California.  Please, if the link fails to make across the border, let me know and I’ll tough it out and transcribe it. http://books.google.com/books?id=lrhOoeLJ1CkC&pg=PA296&lpg=PA296&dq=refrigerated+railroad+cars+Riverside&source=bl&ots=NKRRkt9WkC&sig=a6oRTfKbw4E-NSnAr6YIVSEYDig&hl=en&ei=o-INSvaNE4rqsgO275nzAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3#PPA296,M1  I hope this offers the information you asked about.  If you need more information, please do not hesitate to call or write. Best wishes, Kevin

Kevin Hallaran Archivist Riverside Metropolitan Museum 3580 Mission Inn Avenue Riverside, CA 92501 USA  (951) 826-5701 khallaran@riversideca.gov

That link opened for me with no trouble.  Page 296 has some background, but the page you want is 297.  There is a photo (very dark) of the train, Southern Pacific (the caption says it was SP and Santa Fe, so I guess SP took the shipment the first part of the way.)  If you want to take this subject further, why not contact Kevin directly yourself.  If you do, say that you are the "aquaintance of John Wood from Nova Scotia "who was looking for information about.....

I may get back  in later, gang, but as  a visitor could come tomorrow to see the layout, there are some things to do!

This is what I had to oversee today.  It was one of the top priorities for all of us working on the roof project:

Well I had to also get lunch prepared.  Can't have a hungry crew now can we:

Oh we also did a little work.  Of course you don't see me working.... I'm behind the camera!

Dualing Pianos. I love it. Get someone fromt he Tech Dpartment to record and sell the DVds. We do that here, Every Friday (or last school day) before Prom, the Teachers dress up and sing along to different popular songs. (Football/Throwers coach in pink tutu dancing to "I Feel Pretty"  It;s recorded, and then you can buy the DVD for 12 bucks. And I really want to here a couple classicals break into wild fun.

You know, Lightning is fun to watch... when you aren't sitting in metal bleachers at a track meet... Lovely lights though. The Tornado siren... not so much. Best part, is the storm isn't here yet. I don;t know what they were thinking, or if they even were.

Hey, CSX in selling locomotives! In CSX, of course.

Actually, Zac at Big Four Hobbies was contacted by CSX to hunt down 250 Athearn locos to be handed out as safety incentives to the CSX crews. And look in the bottom left corner of the other items, eww. I;m sorry, but a badly stylized sleeping kitty with a CSX hat, does NOT a Chessie make. Now, the C&OHS plushie, sitting in my lap, is very well done.

I'm gonna aks something that may turn political very quickly, but it;s railroading relevent. I take it you've all heard about the NTSB report abut the Buffalo crash, and all the fatigue issues. Is this, I'm wondering, anything like what would turn up the RR time-out rules? Are we gonna se planes landing in Bum-frick nowhere to change crews out?

 Good morning.

It's 70, cloudy and wet. The high will be around 86 and there's a fair chance of thunderstorms.

Went to Radio Shack yesterday to get some 12v 25mA light bulbs and was wondering how I could get the light to be directional without having to tape off everyplace light could get out when I happened to catch sight of a package of black heat shrink tubing. It works pretty good. I just place a short section over the bulb so just the tip of the bulb is sticking out, hold a lit match under it for just a split second and it's done. I want to get started on my next project soon. I was thinking that would be the Atlas U30C but I couldn't locate the decoder I had set aside for it. I had just decided to put the project on the back burner until I could obtain another decoder but I knew it had to be around here somewhere. It wasn't in the parts box under the layout and not in the parts boxes in the closet. Well, I finally found it but only after I had taken nearly everything out of the closet. All that trouble just to find a 1 amp Bachmann decoder. I'm still thinking about how I can modify the GE so it stands out as being unique but so far I don't have the parts to go with the ideas.

Good morning, and I'M HUNGRY!!!!   I will take the hungry mans breakfast, and a sweet tea.

The storms are coming.  The weather man said some bad ones this afternoon.   We were going to go out today, but I rather stay in.  Don't like going out when it rains.

Maybe just a layout day today.

Good Morning people!

We're getting showers and those T'storms pretty much all day today---highs up near 19C. Tomorrow will see clouds and a high of 10C. It's a classic Victoria Day holiday weekend. Rain, clouds,T'storms and cool/cold temperatures.

I'm doing some running around today to get the goceries---we do need to eat here on occassion --and pick up some stuff later from Home Despot. Lotsa fun.

Chloe, I'll have a muffin and a large bucket of coffee please---i'll sit with Robby and watch some switching going on down by the brewery

Good Mornin, Donuts and coffee please. Thank you. WELL, that was quit a gully washer we got last evening. 1 ½ in an hour and a half. Followed by another ½ inch in about 40 minutes then just a gentle rain for bit to the tune of about 2 tenths, No real storm materialized though the spotters said they saw a wall cloud but they didn't see any rotation. Spent most of the night perched to run for the generato in case we lost power. A couple of flickers got me worried but never lost it. Sump pump has just about pumped enough to refill the Mississippi. Boy I wish I could send that water to those of you who need it. Sure seems a waste. Weather looks pretty good for the next week so crossed fingers.

Glad some of you enjoyed the video. I almost didn't post because it wasn't trains, and I figured it probably wouldn't impress everyone, but I thought that was just the coolest thing I'd seen in a long time. With some of the musical talent in this place someone might like it, and believe it or not, I figured if Ray hadn't already seen it, he surely wouldn't want to miss it.

I received my box car from the Bay yesterday, wrong car. First problem I've ever had. It was to be a Pearl Brewing car and I got a Carnation evaporated milk car. The guy said he would see if he had another Pearl Brewing car and send it out. He should have more as he e-mailed that he had more if I was interested .

Galaxy- Um,um,um,um, can you beat, um, OH, the box a pair of boots came in 5 yrs ago? Ok , I recycled that last week. How about a printer that doesn't work. Hate to get rid of it. It was a good printer until it quit. Seriously, isn't it amazing what some people, myself included, will save.

I think it stems, at least for me, from your upbringing. Both my parents were depression babies, well mom was, 1929, Dad would have been about 11. Rural outside of tiny towns. They made and saved everything. Then as life went on the saving and "frugalness" never wore off and then like the flu....I GOT IT! Most of it's not bad, but some of the stuff I hate to get rid of is ridiculous. Come on! And then the pressure of the land fills......

Well can't do much outside just yet. Too soggy. And, of course, the neighbors may still be asleep. I did discover I need a top ball joint for the truck, maybe..... Ah, after a bit in the train room.

Have a Great Day!

Mornin' all!

Looks like you all have plenty going on.

I've got a pretty busy day today too.  I've got lots of boring speeches to listen to, some handshaking to do, and a whole lot of smiling for pictures.  Yup, it's graduation day.  I get my degree today, and all the hoopla that goes with it.  Gotta do the whole cap & gown thing, moving the tassel, speeches, everything.  Should keep me on the run for most of the day.

You all go about your day, and know that, while I want my degree, I'd probably rather be doing whatever you're doing!

I've got a few of those boxes, some have shtuff in them, some don't. But they are going. We have a printer that works good, just no longer compatible with our new system that I hate to throw out along with the three defunct computer systems I *might* need something from??? I have {paid} bills that are at least 15 years old in boxes in the closet. Why??? HOW ABOUT THIS: MY FATHER has a TV from the late 40's, one from the late 50's, and one from the late 60's-that all ran on vaccuum tubes- that don't work now- and can't get tubes for- still in the basement that he still won't get rid of !?!?!?

Jeffrey W.- I wouldn't have offered you the steel-on-black-roadbed track cuz I know It's crap. I truely thought it was the NS gray, but it turns out it is not! SO I won't be sending it along! Besides it goes to a cheap DC Bachmann set and I think I will get it all together to give to my brother, whose finacee comes complete with a bunch of kids and a boy who is interested in trains. He won't care yet.

Well, guys have a great day. Those of you in the paths of the storms take extra care today!

Sounds like it's probably zinc track. Not as good as the nickel silver bi=ut certainly better than the steel rail.

Hello.......

Oatmeal and OJ, pleae.

Wow, did you see that? It looks like Jeff's on some meds that shrank him to 1/87 scale. He's in the cab of that U30C! Amazing!

Ray and his group really showed how to chow down at the picnic table. Munch, munch. Of course, Ray has been in practice in the diner.

Speaking of food. I've been thinking of Cajun, but Ryan has been gone a lot. Ryan is putting us on a diet I guess.

Nice of Duke to wake up.

Happy Model Railroading....

Galaxy-  LaughLaugh I surrenderLaugh You win!Bow Laugh Not by much, but you win with the bills and the three computers.(only because last year the village had an old computer collection day. Otherwise we'd be tied there Laugh) My Dad on the other hand, though he only had one tube TV from about the 60's, had every power bill from 1960 to 1998 (with envelopes) I found while cleaning out Mom's house when she moved. So don't feel too bad!Laugh It sounds like we are both on the road to recovery and more floor space. Hopefully not to fill up again.Smile,Wink, & Grin

Suns out so I guess I'll clean the gutters. I discovered last night that apparently the last storm on Wednesday clogged the gutters with who knows what. Hmm. It's not supposed to rain for awhile. Maybe I'll wait a bit. SSSSSHHPLLAAAAATT! Yeah, your right best do it now. (At least it could have been a cream pie. Them Apple pies kinda hurt.)

Only three? I have the one I'm using here, two more in the closet and another four down at my parents, two of which they're using. One of those in the closet is an old Apple IIe that still has the original software, four disk drives and an Apple III monitor and is still operable. I got it in 1983 specially ordered with 128k RAM from the factory. General memory size back then was 48k on Apples and Apple compatibles and 256k on IBM's and compatibles.

Jeff, we should compare collections; I have the original Atari game console in my living room and a Commodore 64 my parents bought in 1983ish.  I have a couple boxes of parts still for various PC that I worked on or upgraded over the years.

PC Congrats on the graduation.

Hi guys!

HAsn't stormed YET here.

Had to take van in for brakes. {groan}. HAven't heard yet what it is and what it will cost yet. My theory {and seems reality} is the longer it takes someone to call me about repairs the higher the cost. {groan again}.

TODD- Actually I looked and some are older than 15 years. I have to keep the medical stuff, but don't really need to keep old phone/cable/utilty bills, now do I?! They only serve to remind me how {cheaper?} the bills were then. Don't need that. Just need to know how much they soak me for now!!

JEFFREY- My father worked for IBM, so NO a fruity computers at our house!!! BUT he still has his first IBM and monitors and several other computers from 1980 on to the one he uses today! I tried to get him to get rid of the old single color monitors and non working printers {I think Daisy wheel?} on computer collection day, but he said he'd keep them. Of course, I didn't exactly trot our old computer stuff down there either.

Why, o Why, DO we  keep stuff that is old/out of date/useless???

Jeffrey, I won't bother to send the track along. Maybe the boy will get some enjoyment/use out of them. I was using two pieces including the connector piece as programming track, but think I can use other programing track, and maybe give him the complete cheapy UP set. It was my first foray into HO from N, and I thought I'd try it. I liked it. Hey Mikey. I DO run the N scales at xmas time around the tree.

ANYBODY- I have some N scale Bachmann EZ Track and some switches. Would anyone be able to use it?

Should do some more planting, but the storms are supposed to be rolling in any minuite, and waiting to hear about the van. Tried taking a nap to make him call while i was snoozing, but that didn't work.

Have a  great afternoon guys!

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

I use two straight pieces of Bachmann ns EZ-Track as a program track. When I don't need it I just unplug it and put it under the layout. I can make most of the CV changes I need on the main in OPS mode.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Don't get me started on the "soaking " of the consumer! On second thought lets talk about the.....SSSSHHPPPLLOOOK!!! Ya, yer right. Best drop it. (at least it's a cream this time).

PC should have a switched tassle by now don'tcha think? The girls got a big ole pie in the back keeping warm with some candles on it for when he gets here. Don't know what kind it is they won't let me near it.

I've been toying with an idea concerning the U30C. Here's part of it.

Afternoon, Janie - I'll have a grilled cheese (on wheat toast), bowl of tomato soup, a nice dill pickle slice (NO, NOT "I don't want a pickle... just wanta ride on my motorsickle..."Wink), and a glass of milk, please 'n' thanks!

Todd, good link for the Playing For Change video. Thumbs UpYeah!! As for the whole box thing, I do keep my (small) appliance boxes, printer boxes and such (for that future move, natch!). Hope that your 'Bay seller does like I had one or two do for me - when they sent the wrong item, they then sent me the right one, for no additional $$, so I got a spare freight car to boot! Yeah!! You could use the Carnation as the once in a rare while add-on to your passenger train, perhaps.

Jeff, on the computers, let's see what I have on hand: my Apple IIe (first computer I got, in '84) and a green screen Apple /// Monitor, and an Apple color composite monitor for it, two Apple IIgs's (one bought used, one donated to me) and one RGB color monitor for it (plus 2 each of both sizes of disk drives, my Mac Quadra 700 (bought used), Power Mac 9500, iMac (the original blueberry color one - gift from my brother when he upgraded/bought a new one), Power Mac G4 (also gift from brother in Calif., another upgrade), my PowerBook 2000 (current workhorse, still going strong after various upgrades I did on it), and I think that's it. Would've had one more (Radio Shack Model 100, from my days working in computer dept. at a store back in Poplar Bluff, gave that one to somebody). All of them work, though I don't have monitors for all of the older Macs. The huge CRT monitor that my brother sent me with the Power Mac G4 died a ways back, and it's in my storage unit currently - till I find a place to take it for recycling. Never did get a game computer, though I have a bunch of game floppies in a box somewhere here....

Chris, as for worrying about those school kids, you have to remember that they probably don't have an electric fence at home (unless Daddy's name is Hanibal...), so the first one who (shockingly...Wink) discovered "Ooh - that smarts!" probably decided to play tricks on all his buddies.("Hey, Freddy, c'mere! I got something to show you...") They're just "culturally deprived" out there in Iowa... Whistling

Okay, BridgeTom - that is SO not fair! There you are, getting retirement pay, plus going back to working full-time, and getting paid for all that FUN stuff! Sheesh - so not fair... (shaking his head as he walks to the back booth...)Smile,Wink, & Grin Hey, enjoy it (your middle name wouldn't happen to be 'Riley' by any chance, would it?

Ray, looks like a productive day at the camp (in spite of the minor glitches). Thumbs Up I never have had camp coffee - by the time I was drinking coffee, I was considerably past the maximum age for Scouting. Sigh I'm not sure if I still have my camp cooking gear or not, though I know I have me popup/dome tent and old Boy Scouts backpack (pre-frame and all that...). Sleeping bag's kinda old but still in reasonable shape (sorta like its owner...)

So, PC - are you all gradjerated and a diplomate yet? And did you check the diploma to make sure it wasn't signed in disappearing ink? Wink Proud for ya, guy! I think today is our local state university's graduation, too (I know Panera's is pretty quiet this afternoon). Hey, we'll save the pies and a cake for you to slice when you get back from the ceremonies. I understand Cousin Vinnie's personally guarding the goodies himself, and already had (ahem, cough...) a word or two with certain Diners. Anyone touching the special pie and cake will have some trouble...Shock

Jerry, after that spell of power problems, I think they should consider getting you a backup battery for that chair (and Sallie, too)! That, or call your son (if you have a phone that can work without the electric on). Good that the power came back on when it did.

I went by H-L this afternoon with my coupon, and saw that they have added some of the JL Innovative HO scale detail stuff to their stock (propane tanks, soda machine, RR crossing signs, etc.). At the current list prices on the JL Innov. items (didn't realize they were that much, or else the manufacturer's upped their prices), I'll be getting those only with the 40 percent coupons. I also decided to go with the DPM Goodfellows Hall for my town's hotel. I'll do some looking at the pieces before I decide whether or not to make it narrower in depth than it comes. There's some room on the side walls where I could shorten them and not look bad, I think.

Nice weather today, though a bit cool with the humidty and the breezes. I'm not sure it even reached 70 F this afternoon - maybe only 69 F.

Janie, I'll have a root beer float for dessert, please (well, to tide me over until PC arrives and the goodies become fair game...) Thanks again. Dinner

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Afternoon everyone!

Got back from camp about an hour and a half ago.  We had a few sprinkles this morning but nothing that got in the way of finishing the roof.  About noon I put the steaks over the grill and immediately started getting harassed by one of the workers (a good friend actually) who wanted to know why lunch wasn't ready.  I reminded him that we were at camp and lunch is not served there until 12:30 and we would eat then.......  We went back and forth with that for a while.  About 12:35 the steaks were done and we had lunch consisting of Steak , Potato Salad, Garden Salad, and all the trimmings.  Ended up feeding 11 people and used up all of the steaks I had bought.  They went through at least 7 lbs. of potato salad and then got into the potato chips and stuff as well.  Anyway, no sooner had they finished eating than the front moved in and it started to pour. If I had served lunch at 1:00PM, they would have been completely done with the roof.  Rain let up about 45 minutes later, and armed with a pile of towels the ranger supplied they got the rest of the roof done.  All they had left was the flashing for the peak and some of the side panels (It was a metal roof we were installing replacing the old shingle roof).

I loaded up and headed home, this time with the camera ready incase some of the "White Deer" at the former Seneca Ordinance Depot were out feeding like they were at that time yesterday.  Naturally they weren't!  I did try to get a good photo of some of the other residents of the property, but will wait to see how they came out with the rain and the darkness when I look at today's photos.  Driving into camp I saw a Pileated Woodpecker on a pine tree only a few yards away from the road.  Of course the camera was in the bag and the woodpecker would have bee long gone before I could have gotten it's photo.  Would have made a great one though.

I no sooner hit the web after putting things away this afternoon when I heard thunder.  So i shut the computer back down.  Good thing I did as we got nailed with a heavy thunderstorm.  No damage and no high winds but lots of rain.......

Zoe I'll have a RBF to tide me over 'til supper.

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Well the thunder is rolling.  The rain is also coming down.  I looked at the radar, and it seems it might break up.

I haven't done much today.  Went to the casino to bet on the horses.  Stopped at a hobby store, and they had some neat stuff.  I might stop again next time.  As long as the casino dosen't take much of my money $$$.

Well everybody, I guess I will be back in later.

And a good afternoon everybody!

JIM: Actually, it was more like..."Ooh - that smarts!....I think I'll do it AGAIN!" Whoda thunk an electric fence could be so much fun??? Had it been boys only, I'm sure some genius would've discovered the conductivity of a certain bodily fluid...Shock

JERRY: There should be a battery back-up for the lift chair...a 9-volt more than likely. I'd have home health aide, neighbor, somebody get that changed-out for ya pronto! The hospital bed "might" have one as well...I know at the home healthcare company I used to work for, we routinely put them in the chairs, never did on the beds. As for the concentrator, your provider should have also left a portable O2 tank for that situation. Of course, if you can't get out of the chair to get to it...

Definitely have someone batterize that chair!

PC: CONGRATULATIONS!

Not much else to blather on about, so will yield the floor...
