The reason for the coffee delay is very simple. The one esential item needed to give the coffee that flavor we all know and love has been deemed to be defective. Please excuse the delay while we find another old leather boot of the appropriate age and wear to put in the bottom of the coffee urn.

Good morning folks.

Just thought I'd pop my head in and say hello.  I think the last time I was here was when I was closing my business a few years back.  Life is down right peachy now compared to back then.

A good byproduct of our move is a room that accommodates a 14x9 layout!  I've been slowly working on a representation of my hometown of Mankato MN.  Most of the track is laid, but very little scenery is done.  I'm currently working on a trestle that still stands just outside of town.  Life is pretty busy these days so I model at a much slower pace than on my last layout.  I also have a prototype to be faithful to which keeps me staring and thinking about how to do it 'right'.

I thought I would stop and give an update on my modeling and life in general.

I sure hope you find that old shoe to put in the coffee pot.  I would expect nothing less!Smile

I'll have the direct IV caffeine transfer special, please & thanks.

Our DSL is non-existent presently. Took me 10 minutes to get here. Our phone company is called "Frontier" and it seems a most appropriate name. Usually these outages "slowages" are only temporary. If it last more than 24 hours, I'll call them.

It is much more peaceful here this morning without that nutcase, old hag, wicked witch MIL around.Big SmileThumbs Up

Hope everyone has a great day today. I'll drop back in when the DSL returns.

Good mornin',

Sign me up for the coffee too...had the monthly fire dept. meeting last night, stayed up far too late afterwards. Lots of newspaper crap to do today for THAT editor. It's sunny and 40 here...but I just wanna crawl back into bed and hibernate...until May.

Rob, glad you're getting at least a little bit of peace now. Forgot to mention a few days ago, if you need bed rails, there are some, fairly inexpensive, that slip between the mattress and the box springs...very effective. Any home healthcare equipment place should have 'em.

For all of yous' getting the "winter's last gasp," we had it here Sunday. Didn't affect us much, other than some God-awful wind and bone-chilling cold. At least it didn't stick around very long.

Chloe? How we coming on that coffee dear?

Anbody have any luck ordering from modeltrainstuff, I placed an order on the 1st. and when I log on to check the status, it still says "processing". Hope they don't think it was an April fool's joke. Any way I'l just keep checking. Was hopin" to have it before leaving for Myrtle Beach on friday. BTW that brings another question... anyone know of any LHS in that area. It"s pretty much a tourist/vacation area, so I wouldn't expect it but you never know, with the "snowbirds" from the northern regions.

I'll go sit in the back now. Have a great day.

Good morning, Chloe.  Coffee please.

We have another sunny day( 70 today and 74 yesterday).  However, they have predicted snow again on Monday.  Will winter ever end?

Starbucks?  You can get coffee at Starbucks?  I thought they only sold stuff like Chocolate, Mocha fudge, Vanilla, Hazelnut supreme.  Whatever the heck that is?Whistling  One of the worst chewing outs I ever got from my weird sister was the time we had something or other at the Starbucks at the Rochester Airport.  I looked the clerk and said, "So do you have any coffee?"  I don't recommend trying that one..............

Got my ears lowered this morning.  Have to go grocery shopping sometime this afternoon, but I think most of the rest of the day will be spent getting the layout ready for a photo op session tomorrow and Friday.  New camera body should be arriving tomorrow along with the lighting equipment.

PC - Looks like my one boss....

Last nights FD meeting...3 fundraising reports, membership, finance report, building report.  15 min.  The next 45 were spent arguing over who should have keys to the building that houses the banquet hall and members room.  Thing is, it's accessable through the engine house via a keypad door (along with the members room).  Dept. members don't need keys!  I left in the middle of that.  The FA meetings are different.  We have 4 women on the squad (out of 10 total active members), 3 are officers, the meetings go quick!  Who wants to sit around at 9:30 on a weeknight with a bunch of tired  people?

Just rambling.... it's a short week, weathers going to be lousy.  All that stuff you guys are having eventually winds up here in one form or another.

The weathering looks better now that the thinned black wash has dried.  I'll try to get some pics in a couple of days.

A department I quit in frustration and disgust used to hollar bloody murder if they had to sit through a one-hour training session...but then had no problem arguing for three hours over what type of sandwich to serve at the soup supper.Disapprove

So far, this FD hasn't had much in the way of BS at the meetings. We do the monthly truck checks, have a (usually) delicious supper, then knock-out the department business meeting followed by the Volunteer's Association meeting. Simply put, Dept. meeting = taxpayer money. Association meeting = OUR money. Chief's wife cooks for us, or during warmer weather, we grill. Builds fellowship among the troops, and provides incentive to show up for meetings.

Newspaper work for THAT editor is going slow... I covered a training fire Solon did on Saturday. Lots of pics, now trying to write the article to go with. The toughest part is trying to come up with something "catchy," a jazzy little cliche' to open the article. It's part AP style, part THAT editor style. Gotta "snazify" it (my word) to make it interesting for the reader. Then, have to put in witty little asides to the reader, to show them I'm talking directly to them; and that I'm a witty, sophisticated and enlightened writer...

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh right.

Chloe? How're we doing on the coffee supply???

Well y'all don't have to worry about me, and coffee.  I just don't like it. When I have a cup, it just makes me thirsty.

I got some good news.  I start my new job tomorrow.  Its with the same company I was working for.  Instead of tire treading, I will be mounting tires, moving them in the warehouse, etc.  I FINALLY GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!  This is the first job in about two months.  The other part of the company said they would hire me on full-time, but never called.  The job is still through the temp service (which I hate working temp),  but its a job.  I believe the hours are five, eight hour days.  Mon-Fri.  Thats not to bad.

SO................I guess I won't be in here as much  Sad.  Now I don't have to spend my time in the basement weathering cars for money either.

Well everybody, I need to start dinner.  Trying something new, which takes 40mins to cook.  Then add some cheese and another 10 mins.

Everybody have a good day.

Robby P: Congrats on the job, and kudos to you for finding a way to keep income rolling in while out of work. Rather than just sitting around, you applied your talents and skills...and turned them into cash.

I applaud you sir. Such self-reliance, enterprise, and initiative seem to be lacking these days.

Just be careful when mounting the tires, I'd hate to hear of you taking a trip through the wall...

There's a few depts here that are just like that. Fortunately the one I'm with is not one of them. Our meetings sometimes run for two or three hours, during which time the depts business is handled, members gripes are seen too and officers complaints heard. Somebody wants dinner they have to bring their own. The trucks and associated equipment are checked every week and training scenarios are played out every two weeks. After the business part of the meeting I can leave if I want to, my rank as a senior officer and senior board member affords me that privilege. Usually I stay and assist with the training of the new firefighters. There's always something new to be learned.

There's always something new to be learned.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would add, there's always something to be RE-learned as well.

That's why I quit that department. I believed in (still do!) training. I got railroaded into being the Fire Training Officer, and I was met with "we don't need it." Also, "we've always done it this way, we don't need to learn anything else." They weren't kidding. I set up an SCBA obsticle course... one guy, a junior firefighter, showed up. I set up a ladder drill. Four guys showed up, wanting to "just do the meeting." I set up pump training/hose training. Nobody showed up. I quit, figuring it was only a matter of time before someone got hurt/killed...and it sure as heck wasn't going to be ME! AND, I wasn't going to take the liability for some numb-skull getting killed out of ignorance. Not long after, four others tossed their pagers on the table and walked too...same reason. Too much unsafe BS.

Current FD has a much, much, much, much better attitude...although, it wouldn't take much to achieve that by comparison. "Everybody goes home" isn't just a neat slogan, it's policy.

We do training on a seperate night, makes it easier to stomach rather than suffering through 2-3 hours of meetings, then having training before or after.

In other news and views, two articles now filed for the week with THAT editor. Got a call from a business owner, very grateful and appreciative of the new business feature I did a few weeks back. I hope he called THAT editor too! I'll take all the "atta-boys" I can get.

THAT said...one "Oh S...............hazbot!" cancels out a hundred "atta-boys."

ChrisEight Ball

Hmmmmm, gettin' close to dinner/supper/chow time. Chloe? Zoe? Flo? whomever...a 1/2 lb. cheeseburger please, with fries and a large Coke...thankyamuch...

That should be policy with every dept. In 15 years the closest thing we've had to an injury is a twisted ankle. That was at a house fire where there were many exposed tree roots. One of the firefighters stepped on one and slipped off. As Safety Officer I make the safety regulations the others follow. One of those rules is 'Nobody goes in alone'. Another is 'No team goes into a burning building unless there are two or more firefighters outside for support' and that doesn't include the pump operator. He's got his hands full already. So far our biggest safety concern is 'will a train be on the Ford Stewart Rd crossing'.

Some depts here run separate RIT or FAST crews (the teams rotate from regular duty) with their own trucks.  One can request an extra team through mutual aid if you have enough working crews but need another RIT or FAST crew.

Tried to take some photos of my weathering work but my pocket camera auto focus 'sees' too much even with a neutral backdrop  and can't focus on the windowless walls.  time to get the Minolta out.....

Should be a quick First Aid meeting, if it happens at all.  No President. no Secretary, possilbly no Captain. ...... no meeting.  Not due to lack of interest....due to being busy..  Had to call the FD for lift assistance today, they always help out when needed.

Wow, been busy in here today.

I'll have a plate full of brownies, please. Hey, may as well die happy.

Our stuff from gohobbies has shipped. Hopefully it will arrive by the weekend so I can resume working out the track plan and maybe even start laying track next week.

FIL is improving, but isn't ready to be returned yet. Probably will keep him for more rehab through Sat..

Not feeling right tonight so am going to watch tv and relax (as much as possible). Have a good one y'all.

Good evening folks: Kris is gently sawing wood in the bedroom, so I'm dropping by for a night cap before joining her. I've got the taxes beaten into shape, and should be able to mail tomorrow (crosses fingers that no last minute blunders surface, 'cos there should be a useable rebate.Thumbs Up)

The diner car that I thought would go in my VIA train turns out to be a diner car only on the end of the box it came in!  Not only that, but it won't reverse well with the other ConCor cars in the train, one of which insists on lying on its side if I try!  So, although the whole train would be improved by a diner, it won't be this one.  So it's going to be part of the Maritime Trunk passenger fleet, in this train. I'm swapping out the small CP car to run behind one of my RDCs.  Here's the other train show acquisitions: The covered hopper, it's on one of the three tracks that I'll put through the car repair shop when it gets built. Two of the houses will go on the doorway module, and the other two up on the village at Jessetcook. The blue one replaces the third (red) house which is now on the doorway module, back where it started in 2000!

It's nearly midnight here, so I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel

You too 'eh? I thought we had all the "low foreheads" in MY county...Dunce

Also, you've got one crossing to worry about? We've got the double-track UP east-west main all the way across our district, and close to the station too. So far (knocking frantically on wood), I've only had one RR related response: one tie burning (smoldering). Dispatcher 12 stopped everything, we hit it with a portable foam unit, and called it a day. One of our firefighters is the section foreman based out of Lowden, so he might've changed it out the next day.

Back in my Central City days, we had a Chicago Central and Pacific freight start no less than a half-dozen right of way and field fires from just southwest of Central City up to Coggon. I think they kept on lighting things up all the way to the mainline junction in Manchester. If my memory serves me correctly, I'm pretty sure Coggon Fire had to leave to go help Ryan. The CCP was running the ex-IC/ICG Paducah geeps at the time.

*yawn* Time for bed. G'night everybody, and a SAFE Wednesday to ya all.

Is that old coffee boot in service yet ?  I fished one out of a muddy creek last year (if need be).  To be safe, I think I'll have a root beer float today though... and a bacon leather cheese burger.

So, it's been a busy week - soccer x3 for the kids, is now in full swing; the bee hives are all healthy and active; we are working on building a better chicken barn this spring (various designs and potential locations being sorted out at present); the 5 chicks are growing quickly and we have 8 more arriving tomorrow (split an order with another guy) - we have 4 laying birds and 3 more layers coming by the weekend.  The kids are loving it - so perhaps 4H will eventually happen.

Apart from TRAINS Forum, I am now periodically checking out the Poultry Pages.  Wife did not like the monicker of kruk-a-doodle-doo, so I chose Scaredy Chicken instead...I guess that selection wasn't much better - especially since I told that forum we were "sharing the roost" (ie married).

Trains have a much longer lifespan than chickens though, so I think I'll hang around here and learn lots.  The room and trackplan should work out.

Dr. told me that I need to be more flexible (my wife agreed but it was a completely different discussion) so I'm now needing to look at long term physio (or Pilates ???) neither one is cool or macho but it may keep me out of a wheelchair.  Maybe Pilates was misspelled on the form though - could they have meant Pirates ? ... now that activity would have been cool, if not illegal.

Garage Sales have started - so time to sell some junk.  Spring is slowly arriving in our corner of the world.

cheers, krump

Also, you've got one crossing to worry about? We've got the double-track UP east-west main all the way across our district, and close to the station too. So far (knocking frantically on wood), I've only had one RR related response: one tie burning (smoldering). Dispatcher 12 stopped everything, we hit it with a portable foam unit, and called it a day. One of our firefighters is the section foreman based out of Lowden, so he might've changed it out the next day.

Much more than one. That's just the one closest to us that gives access to a major highway. If it's blocked we have to go to the Hawthorne Rd crossing several more miles away or go through Leesville (over 10 miles away) where we can cross under the track on highway 171. While not as busy as the UP main the single track KCS main can be quite an obstacle at times depending on the amount of traffic on the line. I've lost count of the number of smoldering railroad ties we've put out over the years while the number of trackside fires (according to my files) comes to 53. These are sometimes started by minor derailments but mostly by rail grinders. I won't mention the number of grade crossing accidents as that's a subject I'd rather not discuss.
