Its not hard to do. I first faded the bottom. Then I added some oil paints for the rail grime. Next I added a wash of gray, black, and brown. Each one was applied when it (gray, black,brown) was dry. Then I added some more black powders to kinda "feather" out the black, not making the brown stand out. Between the times the powders were drying, I would dullcote.
Thats it!!!
Now I have to get the load to look good. I need some "bands". I have a few things, but I have been told to use something else.

Good morning. It's 66 and cloudy. The high is due to be in the mid 70's and it will be partly cloudy. Yesterday I finished the weathering on the freight car repair barn and the G&D boxcar. I also worked on the fire station to bring out the mortar lines on it. I may get some time today to weather it with the alcohol/black paint mix. Today I'll be working with my father to clean up the yard some (translation: He'll be working on the yard, I'll be driving the tractor). Later, if there's time, my sister wants me to mow her yard as her mower is still out for repairs. Well another trip to the hobby store for this bulkhead . I am trying to make this car one of my BEST cars. I HOPE to have it wrapped up, and that depends on if the hobby store has what I need.

Sawyer, when I did the wash, it was mainly water/powder. No paint at all. I just dipped the paintbrush in water once or twice, and then added some powder. Mixed it up, and dabbed it on the car (where the rail grime will be).

Well, I drybrushed some muddy paint onto my U23B's trucks, but I think I'm going to do a black paint wash and then add some powders that (hopefully) I won't smudge w/ my fingers

Zoe just a cup of dark raost coffee in a R&GV mug for me this morning. Today is the Palm Sunday Brunch (or should I say Feast) and One Great Hour of Sharing Auction at church so I want to save room.....
I may get to do sound for the late service today as the guy who usually gets stuck with it will be helping get things ready for the auction.
Jeffrey I was going to tell you yesterday that the mortor on the brick building came out great. I use a similar technique on my brick buildings.
Barry you can keep that white stuff up there on the other side of the border...... please! We are having a heat wave here today. May get all the way up to 50°F by late afternoon. Currently 35° but sunny.
Last night I ran some trains into staging and fixed a couple of problem spots in the staging area. I am waiting for some photo lighting equipment to arrive next week to get some possible shots for the Photo contest at the Woodstock Turn. I cleaned the lenses on my Digital Rebel XT and hope I got rid of some little spots that have been showing up in photos recently. If not I will have to take it in to have the imaging unit cleaned. I don't want to try that myself.

Last night we found FIL had rolled out of bed and was wedged face-down between there and wall. Had to do an awkward lift, during which my bad ankle went out. Once I got him back in bed, I pushed the bed against the wall. It is what it is...but I can't keep this up indefinitely. Exhausted from lack of sound sleep. Will wear boots today to help protect ankle. (((Rant Over)))

After digging in the attic for 1.5 hours I found my weathering stuff. Also found a jar of Roberts Brick Mortar. A little dried out after 10 years. A little water, all good. Brush it on, let it dry, buff with a damp rag. After it's dry again, black, brown and rust colored chalks. I like the finish it leaves. It looks better than the picture shows. It's not as 'white'. Also I rushed the process. I'll go do more after lunch and use the good camera with a better backround, maybe it'l look better.

Jerry, that new fiddle yard looks good and I am impressed with your collectioon of locos.
I did get the wiring harness for a decoder from the LHS yesterday and perhaps later today will again attempt to install a decoder into that Sante Fe, but in the tender this time. I also picked up the last CN stock car so was glad I went yesterday.
Last night we rented the latest James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. The special effects were good but it was very hard to follow the plot as there wasn't much of one. It seemed to jump all over the place what little there was. My wife thought the same and it seems to me that a lot of movies are like that now--just a lot of noise and visuals but little story line. However I have to say that the Bourne movies weren't like that, lots of action and great story continuity.
Not much planned for today. May run the little Decapod a little more. It's operation is a little erratic and I know it's the decoder. I put a MRC sound unit in it and of the 3 MRC units I have it is the only one that I don't think is very good. I will replace it sometime but not sure what with as the alternatives cost far more than the $50 I paid for the MRC. One of those situations where it isn''t so bad that you just say, forget it, that unit has to go. I think Jeff is biting his lip.
A bright sunny day here but the snow and ice in the back yard is still frozen and it's 11 a.m. so not sure if we will get above freezing today. The river sure is high and full of ice but they say the floodway gates will be activated Wed.. Things are looking better in Fargo which is good. The Fargo water isn't the main worry here as the river here has a capacity that is 16 times greater than Fargo as it is simply a lot bigger. We are only about 40 miles or less from the mouth of the river where it goes into a delta at the bottom of Lake Winnipeg.

I tried out this old tape that I found yesterday of a band I was in on my reel to reel--the thing is of a concert no less. Scary stuff. What we played at the time this was done was a combination of jazz, rock, and who knows what else. We tended to be all over the map, sometimes in the same song! I'm surprised that the thing even survived all this time--we're going to get this converted/archived as some of us still play/jam with each other----
I'm going to sit by the window and watch some of the scenery--clomp trip bang!--OK so who left yet another HO scale catapault by this booth?
Afternoon All..Its turned into a rainy day here and sallie is napping..Rob,Eric and CN Charlie thanks for comments on my layout..Bad thing is that none of the Steam Engines in Photo run...The N&W J is a great looking engine that a feller sent me 4 or 5 years ago it has no valve gear and motor won't turn over same with GN but motor will run on it..Only one that I have that runs is the little 0-4-0 and it runs like a jack rabbitt!! I keep them on shelf hop'in to come across parts for them one day..Also 4 of those B-man U boats have bad motors..You never know when you might find just what you need to get them going again and I can't bare to get rid of them! Guess I'm hooked on trains! I keep promising Myself I am going to pick-up a good running steam engine on Ebay but every one I bid on someone else want more than Me..LOL...
Been out working today. Started this morning on removing the front wheels from an old yard tractor so I could put them on a small utility trailer. The cheap wheelbarrow-like wheels from the trailer were put on the old yard tractor which will eventually be carted off to metal mountain (recycling place). Went to breakfast in town with the parents. Came back and mowed my sisters yard. Been at home recovering since then.
I am DONE!!!! This car has my mind boggled, and tired. I added some new bands, and clamps (red on the bands). NOW, I need some good shots,
UGH, I hope to back to normal tomorrow. This car has worn me out.

Anyways... Spent most of this weekend with the Les Paul... Working on some tunes, it's all good. Mostly... I've taught myself how to play Wanted Dead or Alive, without the solo... And Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin, without the solo. Also, the main riffs from Heartbreaker and Misty Mountain Hop, both by Led Zeppelin.
All of that done in about 10 hours of playing the guitar... I also know the E, A, G, D, C, and A7 chords. Yay for me.

Well, last night went off without a hitch. The music was good and the preacher (me) ran just a touch short. It was spring break, the nicest day forcast for some time to come, so I figured we'd get out with some sunlight left for a BBQ. We didn't skimp on content though, so it was good.

Mark-Grrrrreat work, man!! Led Zep was never the most easy things to break down into manageable pieces when transcribing either--which Jerry( an ol' buddy of mine from wwwaaaaaay back) and I would do. And this when there were tabs out there---we's coming from the sticks didn't know that of course---and you did well with knowing all those chords--some never got beyond 3---I ended up knowing about 23 the last time I played---about 4months ago--at the rate you be going you'd be knowing quite a few---Keep it up!!
And now--At the risk of sounding like complete chowhound ----------

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
I don't think so. You think so, but something ends up happening. Like it took me 2 hours to get this car listed "on the bay". At first this comp. didn't wanna work, so I tried the wifes comp. Now its having problems.

Barry: I'm mostly learning them as I need to use them... Websites are helpful... Being self-taught must be much easier nowadays than it used to be.
I also managed to break my high E string a little bit ago, right at the bridge. I have suspicions my little brother was doing something, because he likes to mess around with it... We'll have to teach him something about that...
Mark- When it comes to breaking strings I'd just transpose what key i played in to whatever would come cosest to keeping the melody working. This comes through those kinds of challenges on stage wherein I'd pop a string--which is a lot easier if you get aggressive like this'un would--and have to drop down a step or two, or get into some weird alternative tuning pattern--right in the middle of the song. As you work with it it becomes a lot easier to do----
Robby- Computers like to gang up on you? Uh-huh know that one--sometimes I kind of talk to it--encouraging--"nice computer--please let me transfer info to website--please?"

The temp's been dropping here - it's 46 now, and was in the upper 60's (F) this afternoon. Then tomorrow is supposed to be the snow or whatever we'll be getting. CN Charlie - could you please shut that door up there? [Brrr!] I thought it was supposed to be spring!
Rob, pace yourself or you'll wear out before your in-laws do! Seriously, don't overdo your ankle (or any other parts of your body) or you'll be the one going to the doctor. Can you get guard rails on the FIL's bed? Even temporarily might help some so you and your wife aren't up so much.
Kinda frustrated this evening. [rant on] This afternoon was grandson Drew's 1st birthday party at his Mom's & Dad's place, 1:30 to 3 (which wound up being about 4:30 before it was mostly done and I left). Lot of SIL's relatives and his and daughter's friends there, and daughter's mother. Maybe I'm just sensitive to it, but it felt like I was being talked around (or wasn't even there). There's a young couple who are daughter and SIL's friends who were friendly enough, but as for SIL's family, brothers, sister and parents, it was like a closed club. At this rate, if things continue favorably with Mary, moving to California or a state in between here and Calif. is sounding more appealing. [/rant off]
I was looking through my stuff over the weekend for some (water-based, not sure what - grout?) stuff which I used to have and got originally for the mortar on my brick buildings. Didn't find it, but I'm not so sure at this point that I may not have used it for filling in some gaps (in between differing levels on the plywood). Not a biggie, since there are several alternatives (including those mentioned here in the past few days). Also measured a Rix grain bin diameter (for my layout design software, to add a structure in the templates).
Oh, for further confusion - there is an Arcadia, Missouri not very far from me (kinda northwestern direction from Cape G.).
Jerry - I'd agree (that the fiddle yard setup looks good)! I'll leave it up to others who know more about steam locos how many more (and of what kinds) you need...
DerJohn, that sounds like a good deal on the decoder! Good score at the train show, too.
Jeff, that G&D boxcar looks very nice - well done.
Okay, Robby - you have me puzzled/amazed - what did you use for the clamps on those bands? In HO scale, no less? I have got to know (please, please, puhleeeeeeeze?)... If that one doesn't sell pronto, then there are a bunch of stupid people out there (or just a bunch without any money).
Mark, how're your callouses now? After all that playing and all. Were your chords (A-E-D, etc.) open of barred ones? The barred ones will strengthen up (or wear out...) your fingers even more. Keep it up, and we'll be seeing you up under those bright lights in a few years.
