Good morning all,
Jim, keep an eye out for the Walther’s work train sets.  Not sure how many versions were made but mine was set #2.

Nik, I bought the Walther’s Trainline track cleaning car and the C&O caboose, both are excellent cars.
www.factorydirecttrains.com has monthly sales and there is an option to sign up for sale emails.  I see in the Walter’s sale catalog there is a 70-ton switcher for sale for under $50 (I think) and I found Blueline SD40’s on sale for around $140 w/dcc. Check this out: http://store.standardhobby.com/wnum_search_result.php?keywords=A08-78943W&osCsid=e5127a287f29a50bc54245fcfe1ddead
You also have to watch the prices at the train shows and the on the bay.  Toledo train show used DC Mantua locomotives were selling for $209, now figure I just got a T-1 with DCC/sound for $188 it pays to shop around and keep your mind open between new and used.

Shoot me an email with a wish list and I’ll see what I can find for you in your price range.

Mornin' Raisin toast and a bowl of grits with butter and a cup of coffee please. Suppose to rain and storm all day and into the night. Probably do some more painting on the church so I'm not too far from home incase it storms and we lose power. Gonna shut the puter down before I leave. Our house ain't wired like Jeff's. Besides preparedness usually results in not needed.

SaronaTerry- Where's the stuff? I mean you have a nice trainroom, nice layout, and I really like your backdrop,Big SmileThumbs Up but where's all the stuff? The old TV, the rocker you don't use the basement vacuum, the old dog cage, boxes. You know stuff?

nik- I hate to knock any brand. Like at a potluck and commenting on something, you never know, the cook may be setting within earshot. But...LL has not exactly been the best. (PROT's OK). I have one. It sits on the shelf. I did use it to pratice weathering. That's one reason I don't weather locos yet.Shock On the Evil Bay I picked up an Atlas with DCC brand new, the rails hadn't even been installed yet, for I'm thinking about $30-$40. Results not typical I know. This was a seller who had zero feedback and most were probably shy of him. you know, sit back and see if someone else gets bit. BUT, the idea is yes. with a bit of patience you can get locos in that range. And Bachmann ain't bad at all. Regardless of what some will look down at you and say. (present company excluded).

OK there was someone else I was goin to respond to but I don't remember now after all that. I didn't use wordprocesser so I'm relying on my memory... what was I doing? oh, going to the kitche...no....walking the dog? No I'm inside. Hmm, Oh yeah in the Diner.

Have a Great Day!

Morning, all. 40 and rainy here in NW Wisconsin.

Thanks for the comments Jim and Rob. The track extension is to the left of this shot. slowly but surely building around the last penninsula into staging.

Panning back to the right is this:

and farther left is the unfinished part:

Hope that helps set the layout a little better!

-----zzzzz-----gesnufflesnort----ug---huh?---Oh OK---I'm awake.Sleepy

Good Morning---I think. The weatherguessers have us going to 26C today with sunshine and tonight going to get some more tunderboomers. Tomorrow will clear up and only be 13C for a high.Whistling

Had to wake up at a funny time as going to another one of those meetings that require everyone to be there. I might actually get to do some RR stuff as our office is about 1/2 block from tracks---if I get any time that is----and not set out to some obscure place instead.Whistling

Well. Chloe---yes I'm awake---I'll have an IV bag a raw caffeine as well as a toast with jam please---I'll sit by the window and watch the tracks wake up--Sigh

Good Evening ppl

Had a nice evening--with another grumbly tunderboomer crabbing its way through London. Lots of rain out of this one--it was one of those boiler types--gets all boiled up and BOOM!!, off she goes. House down the other side of the crescent took a direct hit from 2 'bolts'---also split another tree down that way.

hhmmm---I wonder how many trees will be left in the Deforested City THIS summer.Sigh

Jim--She kind of has her own studio pegged down as 'Spring's' hideout---as in no one can find anything!!LOL!!Laugh---as for that storm we had it might be the same front---just keep an eye on that thing---Sigh

Well, got one of those really early morning meeting thingummahoovers to do tomorrow---Have a good night all---I's be going to Zzz

Ok, I'll look for model shows in the newspaper. Just so you know, my budget for a locomotive is around $50-$60, maby $70 if I'm motivated. Anything good in that price range? And is Walthers Trainline any good?

Good evening,

Janie, a cup of coffee please...thankyamuch.

JimRCGMO
but looked like it was heading Chris' way, with a lot of red and orange on the radar (and that ain't good!)

It finally reached us, rained for about two minutes...now nothing. Earlier this evening, my old "neighborhood" of Alburnett, Central City, and Coggon had a visit from a twister. A county park took a hit, with a direct hit on a campground. I didn't realize it was even open yet. Twelve campers took the hit, no human injuries/fatalities, one dog DOA Angel. In just a few weeks, the place will be packed...would've been a much, much different story, I'm sure.

So........have spent much of the day monitoring radars and weather charts, while working more on the 41' gondola project.

JimRCGMO
I don't know how well (if I were married) that I could be focused and impartial if it were my wife in a car I got called to, though.

Here's the "rest of the story:" I wasn't called to it, I was a few car-lengths ahead of her. I hit the same patch of black ice, but thought I just jerked the wheel reaching for my evil tobacco product. But, something made me look up in the rear view mirror...just in time to see her hit the patch, swerve, almost go into the median, veer back across both lanes, down into the ditch, up an embankment...AIRBORNE (think of the General Lee taking off), landing nose-first, falling onto the roof, flipping again, landing on the driver's side and sliding for about 60 feet before stopping.

Remember, I'm watching all of this in the mirror.

When I got back to the scene, a small crowd had formed. Guys were already stabilizing the vehicle, someone offered blankets, and one went to grab a fire extinguisher as we were smelling gas. 911 had already been called, so I knew good help was coming. One guy said "she's talking to us." I hollared out to her, and she hollared back. OK, we've got Airway, Breathing, and Circulation established... anything else is going to be deal-with-able...she's got the big 3 covered. Amazingly, she only had a cut on the forehead, and her lip. I couldn't do a proper physical exam, since I had to hold her head/neck. A nurse on-scene offered to crawl in and help, but I didn't want anymore of us in the thing, in case it would go rolling down the embankment. The Center Point Fire crew knew me, so let me stay inside. At one point, they almost put the tool where it would've hurt Kit, so I was able to guide 'em. They did manage to drop the passenger side A post on me however...the one time I'm in a wrecked car without my helmet...

It wasn't until after she was out, and loaded up in the ambulance that it really started to sink in on me.  After watching the wreck, and seeing the destroyed vehicle...I thought for sure she was dead. At the very least, I was expecting major trauma. I guess something kicked in, telling me I HAD to stay calm. She knows enough about EMS to know that if the EMT/Paramedic is freaking out...it's probably not a good situation. She also helped out with a number of practical examinations for certification, as a mock patient, to know what we were doing with the immobilization, and why. It also helped that the Center Point guys were able to joke with me (and her).

Never underestimate the power of humor.

It also was a tremendous help that she only appeared to have minor injuries...amazingly. Now, if she'd been unconscious, or in major trauma... I honestly don't know how I would've handled it.

Long answer to short question.

"For better or for worse, in sickness and in health" was in the vows...I reminded her there was nothing in there about "vehicular rollovers and physical trauma."

JimRCGMO
Hey, but you're in HO scale, right? So that'd be a piece of cake for DerJohn (if you could bribe him enough for tips on how to scratchbuild such a critter, or if he can stand to work on something that huge...).Smile,Wink, & Grin

IF the layout ever gets built...it will be eternally mid-May to mid-June. Any snowblowers would be sitting amongst the junk piles in Feder's Salvage Yard, or in a junk pile at Stickle Enterprises. As if good 'ole Der John didn't have my brain twisting into knots over the fact he scratchbuilt a snowblower in N scale...THEN he goes and tells about making the auger/blades for it!

I just about needed duct tape to keep my head from exploding at that point...

Janie, another cup Dear, and thanks...

Evening, Janie - I'll have the spaghetti and meatballs, a salad with I-tally-an dressing, some peaches, a glass of milk to wash it down, and a cup of coffee (while I think about what I want for dessert). Thanks! Hmm, yep, I think I'll sit here with my back against the wall; nice view of the catapult from here...

Robby, if it comes to why companies do some stuff, I have little-to-no clue, either. Hope you get on some place where the hours at least are more predictable (and more of them). Makes it hard to figure your budget and bills, I'm sure. Hope you land that job with the Ford dealer -  just remember not to confuse your weathering skills with your detailing skills; their customers might not appreciate your 'artwork' on their brand spankin' new pickup. Oops

Inch, good to see you and Deb are holding your own - have you been getting any decent weather lately? Seemed like you, Jerry, and Todd were getting almost as much of the cold and sloppy stuff as our NOTB neighbours were, for a while there.

And speaking of parts north of me, I didn't decide to drive up to Chuck's Depot on Sat. After looking at the money left (this paycheck's the one that the student loans payment comes out of...Shock), I decided there wasn't anything I absolutely had to get. Spent part of my Saturday afternoon playing with the layout design program for the CAW's future expansion. Added a lot of the stuff back in that I'd pulled out earlier - currently, I do have two industries sharing a track, but I pulled the track on the other side. I've about decided that I may have to hold off until I can find a small house that I can afford. Of course, I might go with a side addition for now that'd help me work with switching the industrial area I have track down for now. That, or I'll have to do a lot more fiddlin' with the plan, until I can get some stage in between now and that small house (but one where I can more easily expand it later...) And this weekend, it's been too windy out for any spraying (but it made the 80 degree (F) weather feel more bearable than without it).Cool

Barry, you hadn't been showing your wife photos of my apartment by any chance, had you? Tell Audrey she appears to have more than one or two of us pegged there. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Aw, Eric, but if you didn't help out with those calls, you wouldn't have those stories to entertain us with!Laugh It's about hilarious (for those of us who weren't called out on that one, that is...). So, did she decide to go back to the hospital? Wink

Ray, you might need to watch your back up there - since you mowed your lawn, the neighbors' wives are probably getting on their case, telling them "How come you haven't mowed our lawn like Ray over there did?" Evil Unfortunate part that I recall on lawn-mowing was, once you start the grass off, it doesn't stop growing until almost November (okay, maybe October up your way...)!

Sue, I'd love to tell you I've been making great progress while you were out, but I'd be fibbing to ya if I did. Oops I forgot - are you using W-S's Realistic Water, or something else? And how long does it take for whatever you're using to dry between coats/layers? Mostly, I've been trying to figure where on any future layout I will fit even half of the "chaos pile" of stuff I have. (Another reason I decided I could wait on going up to Marion, IL yesterday). I had these grandiose ideas for how all the kits for structures and industries were going to inter-relate, with one producing materials or products for another, etc. You know what they say about "best laid plans"? Sigh No wonder I'm trying to figure how long it'll take me to get that loan for a small house (and the suitably sized basement).

CN Charlie, I think you can understand what I'm saying there, right? Main difference is, I don't have anyone watching me when I'm looking at the layout (or when I'm fiddling around with the layout design program). If you would like, I can email you the MRRer's Anonymous website and email, though on second thought, maybe some of us could just meet in the back of the Diner...Whistling

Oooooh yeah.

Like something magical is going to happen......

My imagination runs wild when I do that.  If I think hard enough it will appear!

Like enough room for all my industries, each on their own spur? (Hey, a fella can hope, can't he?)

Garry, would that vehicle they're working on be the (ahem...) 'Magic Bus'? Smile,Wink, & Grin Sounds like your trip includes some enjoyable times with your family members. Thumbs Up Any LHS stops along the route for you (just wondering)?

Chris, I just got into the Diner a bit ago, but I heard a rumour that maybe, just MAYBE, you might like the JAWS - is that right? Just one other question - does your wife let you run the electric canopener in the house? Laugh  I don't know how well (if I were married) that I could be focused and impartial if it were my wife in a car I got called to, though. My hats off to all you EMT's and emergency crew people who do that on a regular basis. Bow Hey, but you're in HO scale, right? So that'd be a piece of cake for DerJohn (if you could bribe him enough for tips on how to scratchbuild such a critter, or if he can stand to work on something that huge...).Smile,Wink, & Grin

Mark, hope your practice went well - you mean, you don't just improvise it as you go? Knock their socks off at graduation, by the way. Yeah!!

Jeff - that fence looks great, which means you probably took three times (or more) as long as I might've spent on that.Thumbs Up Blush

Lee, I love those MOW cars - did you scratchbuild/kitbash those, or who makes them?  Okay, saw your later post. Wish I could find one of those sets - the two I have now, I picked up at a train show. Wouldn't mind finding a bunk car and some of those other ones you have in your pics. Man, on your train show, you made out like a bandit on those prices (and, our Prez would be proud of you, stimulating the economy like that! Whistling)

Sawyer, good to hear you got the (chainsawing) job done at your volunteering - and came home with the same number of parts that you left with. ShockThumbs Up Now, does that mean you're ready for acting in some scary movie now? (Nah...)Smile,Wink, & Grin

Gee, I'm glad I'm not a Steelers' fan in the Diner this weekend. Whistling (Actually, football doesn't do it for me, but that's another story)

Barry, you must have got the leading edge of the front I was seeing on our weather channel this evening - it was still out in Kansas, but looked like it was heading Chris' way, with a lot of red and orange on the radar (and that ain't good!). Todd, Inch, Jerry - watch out for yourselves (and I think it may get around to us some time Monday). Ah, springtime on the Midwestern prairies...Wow!! They're predicting rain most of this week here (and of course, that is subject to change at a moment's notice)...

Rob, the 'drive-in' is coming along - good job with the parking area. Now next all those posts and the speakers, right? Wink Maybe you'd better feed that PD more often...Confused

Oh, some of you said you had your cable out (and phone/internet), we had power blink this morning (when I was at church, it went out for a brief while, but came back on (all this before church was ready to get started). When I got back home, I realized the power had been off at about 3 hours earlier (I figure it was around 8 - something a.m.). Crazy thing was, it was kind of windy, but no clouds or rain going on. I figure either fricasseed squirrel in the substation, or else a couple of lines got blown together briefly. Haven't seen the news yet today, so I might find out on the late news tonight.

SaronaTerry - hey, you have my permission to come do the clouds for my backdrop - anytime you want to! BowThumbs Up I'm trying to place where this new section is - did the track used to go left about where the curve 'out' (to the left and back) is? I am sooooo envious of all that space... Sigh Ah, well, my time will come, right?Yeah!!

RT, glad to hear you're finally feeling better. On the carpet, does Kadee make O scale couplers, or are the springs on O scale couplers less likely to go flying like the Kadee ones? After enough tales (and a couple) of Kadee springs flying away and getting lost on the floor who-knows-where, I'm about ready to conside white linoleum or tile for my future train room.

Nik.n, I'd agree with Jeff and Lee, unless the 'LifeLike' is actually Proto 2000/1000 (which is completely different than the regular LL's). I picked up some of my P2K locos on the 'Bay, but if you get to train shows in medium or larger areas, you possibly could find some bargains on other good brands (at prices closer to the 'new' LifeLike ones). Is there a price range you want to stay within? That could make a difference, as the other guys said.

Well, I'm about caught up, just in time, 'cause it's almost time for the evening news. Want to see what made the power flicker on us this morning. I'll check back in the morning. Prayers for healing for RT and Jeff, (and any others needing it), for jobs and better weather, and a good night's rest for all you Diners out there. AngelAngel

Blessings,

Nik, in HO avoid both of them. In N, the LL stuff is decent. Check Ebay or trainworld for stuff. Usually you can get a good quality engine for what the MSRP is of one of those LL junkers. Some of the newer Bachmann is pretty decent.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Nik, I whole hardly agree with Jeff.  What do you consider a budget?  Are you running DC or DCC?

Used, I've had good luck with the Athern blue box, matter of fact I have a 29 year old GP7 that still pulls like new.

I did pick up a new Bachman HT a and b set. The  A unit was $26 and the B unit was $24 they are good pulling units, but only one truck picks up the power.  If your on a tight budget there not bad locomotives for the price.

The Model Power locos I've had in the past were good but on the light side. I had to add weight to all of them. The drive on the ones I had was 8 wheel drive and 8 wheel pickup driven by a can motor.

All the LL standard line locos I had were absolute J U N K ! Do yourself a big favor and don't even consider using them. Mine were four wheel drive and four wheel pickup, usually 2 wheels in the front truck and 2 wheels in the rear truck. The power was from a pancake motor on one truck.

Hey Everyone, I was wondering. Are LL and Model Power engines ok for a budget RR? What drive do they have, and how is the quality?

I got a bunch of Craftsman rolling stock kits the sticker price was $27.98 each, but I talked them down to $6.66 each (but I had to buy 15 of them):
(2) Michigan Central  1945 (rebuilt 1936 USRA) covered gondolas
(5) M-53 B&O Wagon top boxcars
(2) PRR 1947 G-27 Auto frame cars
(2) H-34 B&O wagon top two bay covered hoppers
(2) Milwaukee 1939-40 Rib boxcars
(2) NYC 1946 70-ton covered hoppers

WOW!!! That's a haul!!BowBow

Evening all,

Went to the Toledo Train show this morning, here’s the haul

36’ wood side reefer; Brewing Corporation of America, Cleveland, OH
(8) Tyco hoppers.
Some junk yard palter castings
40’ Toronto-Hamilton-Buffalo box car

I got a bunch of Craftsman rolling stock kits the sticker price was $27.98 each, but I talked them down to $6.66 each (but I had to buy 15 of them):
(2) Michigan Central  1945 (rebuilt 1936 USRA) covered gondolas

(2) PRR 1947 G-27 Auto frame cars
(2) H-34 B&O wagon top two bay covered hoppers
(2) Milwaukee 1939-40 Rib boxcars
(2) NYC 1946 70-ton covered hoppers

I spent a total of $140.00 (including lunch and admission for 2 adults)  The wagon top boxcars are a real find.  These craftsman kits (Sunshine Models and West shore Line Co.) are super detailed kits unpainted with brass grab rails, and there has to be 20-50 parts just for the underside details.

not making any promisses here, but send me some specs # of axels, length and width, type and size of sides (solid or mesh metal), length preferred on trailer hitch, colour; that sort of thing, and I'll see what turns up.Whistling

Derjohn--The only things I'd be looking for would be the dang axles right now---if the silly things exist that is---If you find any let me know---Thanks!!Whistling---I'll let you know exactly what later-----

My afternoon went nicely---all the branches went into the pile out back--a few branches are big enough I might get some scale lumber out of the wood we do salvage from 'emMischief--but what got me was all the willow branches that showed up our way---from 2 blocks away--Confused--must've been the wind---uh huhWhistling

Chloe, I'll have a Ceaser Salad with a RBF please----I'm sitting with Ray and watch the trains

Rob- At least PD had something to do while it he waited for you to rescue him.Laugh Drive In's starting to look pretty good!

Got the freezer plugged in and filled and old freezer is cleaned up. Garage got cleaned up and now is getting filled up for the garage sale. Nope no train stuff is going to be offered. Took a break and I just came up from staring, er I mean, thinking, uh no, WORKING, yeah, that's it working in the train room. Beautiful day out just so dog gone windy that it's to obnoxious to be out.Sigh Maybe I'll work on burning some calories.Zzz

WELL!

I tried to get on this morning and couldn't!

Seems Time Warner Cable RoadRunner was out in the Northeast. The nerve of them!

That would explain it!  I haven't had one of those you have to reset everything problems in a long while.  So I guess I wasn't alone.

I have decaled one side of the 2-6-6-2 this afternoon and it should be dry enough later this evening to get the other side done as well.  Got the Bachmann 2-8-0 out of the box (bought it last fall) and switched out the decoder, placed it on the track and....... Nothing!  Hmm.  Not happy so I move it a little bit with the old 0-5-0 switcher and the light comes on....  Seems it was not getting good contact from any of the wheels.  So a little fiddling and a bit of conducta-lube, and I have a nice smooth runner.  Like a lot of the Bachmanns, it likes to do about 250 Scale MPH at speed level 55 on the Digitrax Throttle, so it will need some work on the CVs after I break it in a bit.  (That's why I switched out the decoder that it came with - the NCE one I put in can actually have all its CVs programed......Wink.)

Zoe, I'll have the hot Roast Beef Sandwich special for supper tonight, along with a nice cup of decafe in a R&GV Museum Mug, and a slice of pecan pie for dessert.  Please and Thank You!

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Jeff, its always the small dog thats the mean one.  With her being 25lbs, shes pretty tough.  Now, the boxer.  Well he's 85lbs, and a big WIMP.

Whew!!.. warm today.  Friday was 38 at 6:00am today, 77.  May sound crazy, but too much heat too quick.  Supposed to go back to the mid 50's during the week.  Cut the back yard,i t's bigger (well, here it's big, 100'x50') and had the taller grass, the front yard is small and it can wait.

Got some painting done on the carfloat.... but as I sit here it looks like it needs another coat of black on the one side of the hull and I should have painted the deck....  hmm, the sun is still out... where's that paint can?  Found a bunch of modeling tools I just replaced because I couldn't find them.... typical, huh?

A good time to have one of those popular RBF's, I could use something cool.....
