Jeff - sorry to hear about your uncle...  I can now say I know what it's like to lose someone...

I think LHS's have something in the air that makes you buy stuff.  I have so many kits upstairs that really have no place in my plans, but I buy them anyway..

Eric

Ah, TOP.  Dinn.. excuse me, Supper for those west of here.  Dessert for us Easterners.  Whatever your pleasure!

What burns our butt is racing to a call to find the 'unknown medical emergency' waiting with a suitcase to go to the crisis center at the hospital. Cheaper than a taxi.....

Eric, that's pretty universal my friend...and part of why I got OUT of healthcare. I got fed up with the BS.  Well, stay SAFE as you continue to battle the Reaper, and my very belated condolences on your loss.

Condolences also to Jeff.  That's a pretty basic statement, doesn't sound like much...but know there is much more behind it. For a guy who makes a living with words...sometimes it's difficult to find the right ones.

Good evening everyone,

this looks like a nice friendly place to stop in and have a nice hot cup o' coffee. I've been "drivin" by here alot lately, see all the same cars in the lot. Is this a private, invite only type of place, or do yuo welcome newcomers? Any way I'll just take my coffee at the counter and keep to myself, so as not to bother anyone. BTW I'm new to this model RR stuff, just started to build a small layout ofr my son and me.

Young lady give everyone a refill on me. You all enjoy!

Bob!  WELCOME!!   I'm fairly new myself.  Invite? No!  Come on and sit down!  Great bunch of guys and a few Gals too.  We're all modelers to some extent, some pros others.. well, we do what we can.  The diner is a bit different from the other threads, we talk about our hobby and... we talk about our lives.  It's not for everyone but we never exclude anybody.

Ain't no private party here. Come on in and sit a spell. Take your shoes off and get comfortable.

Evenin' folks!

Just got home from Deacons.  Long meeting tonight as we were all trained in emergency procedures for the church.  Then we had the regular meeting after that.  The training session was well received by the members.

I see the dining car got moved again.................  Lucky it didn't go too far away from the old track and was easy to find.  I see the pies made the move with the car this time.......

Rob, sorry to hear about your FIL falling.  Hope everything turns out OK and he recovers well.

Jeffrey, I guess that explains where you have been all day.  Very sorry about your Uncle.  Please know we are thinking about you and keeping you in our prayers.

Garry if we are going to vote on steamers, I want to enter this one:

She gets my vote as I think the plain old Mikes have a certain balance and symmetry that has to rank right up there.  My favorite photo of her:

Welcome to the diner Bob.  Always room in here for more.  Zoe, make sure Bob gets his choice of pie and put it my tab, OK?

My two favorite SILs stopped in at the house this afternoon, so I got another chance to show off the layout.  Neither one had ever seen it except from the photos I have emailed on occasion.  They were both very impressed as they were thinking the toy train around the Christmas tree......... They also had some great questions about the hobby and how I make items.  What I thought would be a 10 minute tour turned out to be over 2 hours.  I also found out that I should be a Great Uncle again sometime in the next couple of days.

Hope all have a great night!  Prayers for all who are in need.

Evening, Chloe - gee, I go back to w**k for a handful of hours and the Diner gets moved! Wow!! Oh, yeah, Chloe, just a cup of hot cocoa (my sweet tooth has a craving tonight...), please 'n' thank you.

Nah, PC, I figure you pastors are about perfect, right? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Nik.n, thanks for helping the twins getting the Diner cars moved on down here. Thumbs Up And nice job on the poles and the hopper, too. (Might want to weather the hopper a tad bit more before Robby sees it)

K4Kid, good to see you stopping by the Diner - I've seen some of your posts in the big forum out there (and you show good manners out there. Yeah!! (Not everybody does, y'know) Looks like you've been whittlin' at the dreaded H-D list today, eh? Thumbs Up Get all that done before the weekend, and maybe you can spend more of it on the MRR'ing! But don't talk about all that H-D stuff too loudly - the other married Diners may start up a lynch mob if they think you're gonna incite their CFO's to expect that level from them...Whistling

SaronaTerry, you can post pics any day you want to - and thanks for the tip on Rob's question.Bow

I'd agree that you have a good start there, Rob. Myself, I'd rather have more potholes (like you have there) to start with, and then you could patch some back in, even do the patch job kind rough (like the real thing...).I've also heard that art supply places or some LHS's have a striping tape, but not sure if theirs would be the right color or not. Keeping your FIL (and your wife running to the ER) in my prayers. AngelAngel Healing thoughts, too.

Robby, apparently you impressed those kids in your wife's class, all right. What'd you do, take some weathered freight cars along the last time you went?Wink

Thanks, Duke - I hadn't realized Fergie'd gone out to play 'Bobber' and "Feed the Polar Bears". Knowing Fergie, he's got some MRR projects out there with him to while away the time between sea swells...Oops

LSWrr

Curves he used a french curve with a pice of tape to hold the curve off hte table so the paint didn't wickunder the curve.

Lee, I recall that trick from my freshman year of college (Engineering Drawing class)! Smile

Eric, you'd love one client I have seen in the ER a time or two. She developed a taste for ambulance rides to the ER when she didn't get her way in the nursing home...OopsBanged Head I think the last time I saw her, she said the staff had cut her cigarette ration because that money was being used to pay for the previous trip's ride. Oh, and I can definitely understand your comment on an abundance of kits finding their way home from the LHS.Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jeff, sorry to hear about your uncle. AngelAngel From what I've seen of that Walther's enginehouse, I think you'll really like that one once you have it built. Not very familiar with that MP town hall, though.

Bob (ColesDad) - nah, half the people in here have come in the past year or less, and there're others just lurking who've been here much longer. Only 'private party' is the one you might have with Vinnie (he's related to Zoe and Chloe, our twin servers) if you get too wild when we have one of our occasional Diner parties (swinging from the chandalier is okay, but pinching the help is a definite NO-NO!) So, what scale are you and Cole w**king in for your layout? Tell us a bit about it (or your plans for it).

Oh, Ray - like your Mikado there! Thumbs Up

Well, I've finished my cup, so I'll be heading for home. Prayers for those in need of comfort and healing, and may the rest of your week be better than the first part!

Blessings and Prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.

***Jeffrey, sorry to hear about your uncle. My condolences.

***Bob, Welcome!

FIL was released from the hospital and is back at the facility with MIL where they reside. My wife is spending the night there, just in case.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, links and encouragement. Much appreciated.

Only 1 week left before that store ships our model rr order. Once that key section of track arrives, I hope to "go to town" on my layout and make some quick progress, mainly getting track laid so I can start running trains. Really looking forward to that. The rest will be slow going, especially with all those carnival rides to assemble for the wife's layout. (I kinda dread that)

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Have a good night y'all. Cowboy Rob

Jeff.... that's terible news and I;m sorry to learn about it.

Ray.... That CN 2-8-2 was really clean when its photo was taken. I bet Fergie would vote for that one.

Duke.... Yes, you really seem to be set in your ways. You won't even consider anything but the PM Berk. Wow. I can only imagine waht Tom W, the Yellowstone king might say. Do you know there is a C&O Berk in the KY Ry mueseum?

Another missing diner is OJ Ed..... Has anybody heard from him?

Rob- Jim had a good idea on the patches. Glad to hear your FIL is home.

Bob- Sign - Welcome I'm Todd, one of the not so professionals mentioned before. Just like a local diner in a small town, this is a great place to get help and make friends with a great bunch. They won't put you down or make you feel not worthy if you don‘t do something the way they would. . You'll see. Oh and I'll go out on a limb here and say you have a son. Bragging is allowed. You may get a pie air mailed to you. Don't take it personal. Happens to us all.Laugh

Kid- Loved the videoThumbs Up. Thanks for bringing it by. Stop in again any time.

Church meeting went well. Green room is back to green. (long story).

I don't post for one day and you guys add four posts to the last thread, and four to the new one?

Wow.

Spent today at my dads, so I was able to bring out the Les Paul and jam a bit. Worked on Dead or Alive some more, then I figured out how to play most of Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin. My index finger was bleeding from holding down an A power chord for so long... I want the callouses to come soon.... Ah well, I've got a weekend chock full of guitaring. During that time, I hope to be able to play at least ONE of the songs at the proper speed, all the way through. (Minus the solo... I'm no Jimmy Page yet, lol.)

I guess that's all for now.

I don't know about you all, but I think I'm going to have a talk with God about this weather.  Lately, the only time it gets in the 60's and 70's is when it rains.  When the sun is out, it's in the 30's and 40's.  Kinda backwards, don't cha think?  Now mind you, we haven't seen snow for a bit, so I'm good there (though the weather guesser said we might see some Monday night!  BTW, Monday will be dry and 40 degrees.....point in case!).  It's just that, see, I'd like to ride my bike in something other then 47 layers of clothes for a change.  I know He'll warm it up eventually, but it's just so hard waiting for eventually!

I too ran out of grandparents a long time ago.

Thank you one and all for the prayers and condolences for my uncle. He was a minister in northern Arkansas and would have appreciated it very much.

Good morning.

It's 63 and very foggy. The high will be in the mid 70's and there's a good chance of thunderstorms. There's a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until noon cdt today. A lake wind advisory is in effect until 6 PM cdt this evening.

I was up until 1 am working on the Town Hall kit. It turned out pretty good. Still have to black out the inside. I may start work on the engine house kit later today depending on how I feel. It'll be a pretty complex build. I received a few city accessory kits (Walther's #933-3535) in the mail yesterday. I'll be starting on them in the near future and there's a Gorre and Daphetid boxcar kit on the way.

We lost another Coastie last month.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/03/30/earlyshow/main4902345.shtml

Jerry Avant Jr. died while protecting others.

Doctors said the 39-year-old male nurse was shot more than two dozen times Sunday while trying to shield others from a gunman at a Carthage, N.C. nursing home.

Avant's father, Jerry Avant Sr., told CBS Affiliate WRAL-TV that the doctor told him his son was a hero. "He said he undoubtedly saved a lot of lives before he went down, because he counted, himself, 27 bullet holes."

Avant was a 10-year veteran of the Coast Guard before he became a male nurse.

Good morning,

Saw the diner rolling by yesterday, thought it was some" April Fools" w/ trying to hide it....starting to put some miles on this thing. The staff will have to start using a commuter soon. Well if this one wears out there's some nice B&O bay windows to use

Well, another gloomy day here in the northeast, some sun may peek out this afternoon.

I'd like to put some favs up for a vote. The Berk is such a beauty

But the EM1 is one I really love

Our show and open house was a great success.

Imagine, 2 days of running and no train wrecks, that's a first. Usually I'm the cause of at least one every show.

This was a good one from last year. I did get tagged while backing up in the hole by a CP freight. Not a derailment, odd thing is, one of my P2K hoppers just popped right out of the train and landed wheels down on the floor. The rest of the train rolled and coupled back together again, strange...

Jeff: So sorry to hear about your uncle. You'll have to tell us a little about him.

Rob: Glad to hear your FIL is out of the hospital

Robby: It is such a thrill working w/ those lil' ones, then they grow up..... Figure what type of load for that bulkhead flat? Steel, pipe, timber, machinery?

Not much going on in the way of trains at the workbench except changing out a drive on an Atlas WM GP40 3796 in Circus paint. Doesn't want to speed match that well with all my other Atlas Master series. After 2 decoders I'm taking another route. Must be the dual mode decoders in the other Atlases. I am just switching shells w/ a spare GP38. Really want it to run in consist like this:

This weekend I'm helping out my youngest daughter at the UMass campus @ Amhearst. The art dept and band is putting on a fund raiser. I'll be making some of the props and who knows what else. She has taken well to my new lady friend, "Linda", the kids are doing quite well lately, It's been 2 years since loosing thier mother.  We should all have a good time together make a nice weekend out of it.  Afterwards, I was thinking of dinner at the Steaming Tender in Palmer, MA not that far away. Great place. Usually stop there after the big W. Springfield show every year. http://www.steamingtender.com/gallery.asp Anyone ever out this way should check it out.

Good morning everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome. I'll have a cup of coffee and a corn muffin please, thank you.

So, I have a son thats 5y/o. Been married to the best wife a man could ask for, for 8 yrs on the 13th. Yes the 13th, and we got married on friday the 13th. Had nothin but "great luck". Also have a 23y/o step-daughter, who is a great kid. Lives on her own in NYC. So we travel Amtrak every so often.

I got interested in MRR when my FIL gave my son a train set a couple of years ago. He was only 2 at the time, so we just put it away until this year. He really liked it when we set it up, but I was hooked. We went to a couple of train shows they had in the area over the winter, and iI became kinda obsessed. Started buyin the MR magazine from the newstand, after two months, signed up for a subscription, and internet stuff. Now, I'm not afraid to say that I think I'm more interested than he is, but thats ok. As long as I keep him involved it goes alot smoother with the "CEO/CFO" if you know what I mean.

I won't ramble on any more for now. I come back later and give some details on how we got started with a layout and the space we have. Got a track plan I modified from one of the MR plans.

Have a great day everyone, Bob

BTW I do like the D&H because as a kid they came through my hometown. They had a five bay engine house that still stands today about one city block from my house. Also had a huge brick roundhouse, that has since been torn down.

Bob,  the load will be mainly steel.  I will have some I-beams to about half way on the car, and then misc. steel sheets.  The end of the car will have some rusted pipes/rebar.  So far all I have done is the fade.  I will start on the weathering part today, and tomorrow.  Its a orange bulkhead, and orange is one of the hardest to weather.

I will post some shots of it in here.

Robby P.

If you want to fade the orange, I found washes or airbrushing the lightened body color is a good starting point. Of coarse ant heavy rusting and streaking is done by dry brushing first. The air brushed "fade" knocks down the reporting marks and gives a good overall look to the car. Then all the dirt and grime can follow.
