It's that time of the month again. That means it's time for a new edititon.

To start it off, here's a link to my new slideshow.

Here's a link back to the old place.

Enjoy!

Well I'm going to be heading off to my LHS to pre-order F45 WC 6654, and FP45 ATSF 90. I wish Athearn would be making ATSF 91 (In the Superfleet Scheme), they are making 90, and 92, but not the FP45 WC got...ohwell, she is going to get patched anyway (I was hoping I could get away without patching her).

Sawyer: Sounds like a good plan. How many times are you going to change it???

[snip]

We won in the Semifinals today!!! We (#4 team) beat the #1 team 2-1. We play in the Finals tomorrow. So far, it's been a great season, and I hope we finish it even better.

umm, well, not likely. this room is better suited to the industrial park. now, if I get the attic, I'll go back to the mountain RR plan.

congrats on getting to the finals Tongue

Good call for Hockey and Basketball.

as for football, I believe that football is america's past-time, not baseball. for one, there's good lord knows how many MLB players from other countries. The NFL is ALMOST all american born (there are some palyers from other countries. The Cardinals punter is an Australian, I tihnk Samkon Gado is from another country, and I'm sure there's more). Another; aside from the CFL and the failed NFL Europe, there aren't too many major football leagues around the world (but they are out there).

Jordan: Yes, I will definitely sand the edges of the cork roadbed. I did that in the old Concord yard and it made a huge difference.

I spent all weekend on the layout... The cork roadbed is all laid and I'm halfway done with the track. Dooley has all the track done up to the Stude border on the east, and is connected to the old finished track (the pass) to the west. And the Stude crossovers are in and connected to West Formanek to the west. To the east there's still one double track stretch till the mainline is complete again. Here's some photos.

Those boxcars are on the siding for what will be Agrawal Paper. The track to the left will be street running (the right main will be uncovered because of the switches). Only a few of the buildings I used to mock-up the scene will be used; the rest will be used as trade fodder (I have a friend modeling the early 1900s, so they'll fit in) for more modern-era buildings.

That small yellow building on the close side of the tracks with the abandoned siding out front (or is it the back?) used to be the ice house, but is long abandoned. The abandoned siding will be partly buried in the road.

This is the farm (only New Englanders will know what I'm talking about, it's not a crop farm at all) just west of Dooley. That old road you see (it'll be covered over with scenery) was actually the railroad's "Signature Scene" which is no more...The hill is extra foam I had broken up and covered with plaster cloth.

...And Dooley is connected to the rest of the layout! These are where the mainline comes off the pass and up onto the new cork roadbed.

Yup... I did manage to save all the buildings though! One of which was my great-grandfather's which I permenently attached to the layout with ground goop (a la Lou Sassi) and had to literally cut off the layout... And I got rid of the pool! It was still warped and scratched from the gravel hopper and over-weighted boxcar incident... Not to mention it was unrealistic in the first place!

Was it one of those bachmann pools that's really just a piece of plastic that's painted to look like a pool?

Good to see that cork is being put to use. I though you were going to use flextrack for most of the layout. Looks like you have quite a bit of sectional track still there.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well, to be honest with you, i would have to disagree. I know there are many sides, (just as there are teams in football) but here are the reasons why i agree to disagree.

  • First off, how long has football been around? Baseball has been around for over 135 years.
  • The NFL was almost doomed if it had not mergered with the original AFL.
  • The thing about the players from other countries is not bad, but it is good. It shows how many countries enjoy baseball, one example of this would be the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Its not just a national pastime anymore, but a global pastime.

But dont get me wrong, when august rolls around and college football gets started up, good luck trying to get me off the tv. But i know this is just one guy telling his opinions, and i know many people would back up just about every other sport.

But anyway, back to modelrailroading, i still have not gotten my church, but i did go ahead and make a gravel road to it. Things seem to be going as slow as they could be.Sigh

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, or maybe ballasting some track.

Yeah, there is a lot of sectional track there... The big curve was built with sectional after someone suggested using that for fixed radius curves. It sure works better then trying to get good joints with flextrack on a curve that big! And the straight sections were built with straight sectional track since I already had that and I never had any problems with that.

I was (and still am) going to use flextrack for non-fixed radius curves and other short sections. The main problem with sectional track that I had before was from the little filler sections and the slight curves (which were a jumble of short straights and curves), not the long straight sections.

And yes, the pool was a Bachmann model; the water was actually printed paper glued to the bottom of the plastic pool rim...

Lucky! That type of thing is what I'm basing my town after, except a bit shorter... Track 1 is buried in the street like where the tank cars are in the 1st photo, and Track 2 is next to the street like where the engines are in the 1st photo because of all the switches...

Of course, I'll have to test the track and get all the bugs out before I pave the road in plaster and make the track immovable... So it'll be a while before I have street running...

Tyler, well I shouldn't say I AM going to Bellevue, but it's likely.

Also, can't you make a double track street running using Styrene? I think if you used styrene you'd be able to get around the switches better. Plaster or dry compound is a pain in the butt to make look nice along the tracks. It can be done, I've done it. but I recommend using plaster as a base to get to the ties, or very close to the rail height (While not touching the rails), but then cover the road surface with styrene. If you make any mistakes you can rip out the styrene, and not spend hours ripping out plaster. Your locomotives should also run smoother over styrene. If you go for all plaster for the road surface, I would highly recommend using styrene between the gauge (The space between the rails), as plaster is a REAL pain to get cleaned out of the flangs. Again, knowing from experience, at least use styrene for the gauge. Your locomotives should run smoother over styrene compared to plaster.

BTW Nice sig...although that scene is now gone Tongue.

 Guilford also has street running!

That line also has the sharpest curve on the system.

No, the hopper is not derailed, and yes, that is a continious section of track.

One of your points is one of my points that football, not baseball, is the national past time.

Baseball is no longer solely American, it's branched out, even to India (was on outside the lines on ESPN Sunday), but football is still centered in America.

As to the AFL/NFL merger, it was actually the AFL that was going to fold, not the NFL. They actually sued the NFL, claiming it was a monopoly (sorta like what probably would have occurred w/ the SPSF merger), and won, but got like $5, not the huge sum they sued the NFL for. Was on ESPN around a year ago. Yes, baseball has been around longer.

You do make some good points, lol. Guess you're also obsessed w/ sports as well as trains, lol.

also, don't really like College football. The BCS is a pain in the you know where. Only college football games I care abt. are the Carolina-Georgia game and the Carolina-Clemson game. Pull for the Bulldogs and Tigers every time. Only college game I watched this season was the Clemson-Carolina game.

As for my model railroading, absolutely nothing to report, except a little ballast down in the yard on my shelf layout.

Ya, Packers#1, your just about right. I guess this topic could go on just like a round table discussion on which locomotive was better, the Big-Boy or the challenger. To be honest with you, everyone has there own oppinion and just about everyone is correct, except for that weird kid down the block who thinks he knows everything about sports, but we all know he dosn't(Ex. "Hey, guys, can you belive that Brett Favre has been playing for the New York Jets for his whole carrer. Wow!). Hope that didn't offend anybodySmile

Well, I am back...

The past week or so has been really busy...

So, the old TMRP is closed down...Happy March! My birthday is this month...which means it is a good month, lol.

Tyler- Good work so far on your layout.... looking forward to seeing more progress.

Well, I hope to be in and out the rest of this week.... we'll see. Nothing new from me, unfortunately.

Story time!!! So, it was a few days before the superbowl. This kid in my class comes up me and a few other people, and says "Did you know that superbowl sunday is on a saturday this year?". We tell him that its not and to shut up and leave us alone. So he says, "Trust me, my uncle invented the NFL!" We were about to kill him. And yes, he lies about EVERYTHING.- True story.

Also, I forgot. In addition to liking the Devils, I am also forced into liking the Canadiens. My Spanish teacher's cousin is Georges Laraque, so I have to like Montreal during 1st period.

Tyler: Looks good! You would probably be better off following Jordan's suggestion of using styrene rather than plaster. I used the Woodland Scenics stuff for my roads, and at the crossings, it was hard to avoid getting that stuff in the flanges. Good luck finishing that up.

I put down the tape for some more roads yesterday (I need to get more plaster to pave them). I also painted some N scale cork to use as sidewalks. I couldn't use it for anything else, so why not.

I think I'm going to dump the idea of using the passenger car as a station. I found a piece of balsa wood that I can use for the platform. It will be about three feet long (enough for three 85 foot cars) and they will be high level platforms, since that's all NJT's building these days. Just need to figure out how tall they will need to be.

I'll try to get some pictures later.

Ha, true.

Also, i wonder how many people know that Favre was drafted by the falcons? And that if the falcons hadn't of gotten him, Ron Wolf and the Jets would have. Favre hated Atlanta, and then wolf went over to the Packers, and traded for Favre, and  you know the rest. Wink

Yeah, agree to disagree.

Joe, nice story.

Happy B-Day OzarkBelt!

Styrene? Ehh.... I've used styrene for roads before and while it turned out okay, I think plaster would work better. And keeping it out of the flangeways shouldn't be too hard; I'm planning on applying the plaster, cleaning the flanges out with an old freightcar truck, then putting something in the gap to keep the plaster from coming up to the rails. Once it's dry I'll clean out the flanges with an old hobby knife with a broken blade.

Alright, I can't wait to see pics. Another thing, to cut back on plaster, and drying time, a cork base would help. You can use the strips that you used for the track. Again you don't have to do this, but it helped when I did my "street running".

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OB!!!!

Well, I'm not sure how to go about planning my next industrial layout. Of course, I might want to wait and see how much space I'll actually have, lol.

It is starting to take shape in my mind though. I can sorta visualize how I want it to look. Now to figure out how to make that work.....

Happy BDay Ozark!!! (belated)

I put down some more sidewalks last night.

I think I know what to do for the extentions. I just need to finalize the plans. Here's what I'm thinking:

  • Three track yard in North Morris (2 for layovers and one for extra equipment/ non-revenue
  • One team track, embedded in old, cracked pavement for freight cars in North Morris
  • One track in Watchinson for station (one train will layover here overnight.)
  • One team track in Watchinson

In North Morris, it will become a double track main. One of these tracks (EB track) will go downgrade, because it will eventually duck under the M&E Lines before joining with them just east of Morristown Station.

Sounds like a good plan, Joe! Photos would be great once you've got some progress.

Here's the photos of the roads, a la Jordan's suggestion. It gives a pretty good image of where they will go.

Then last night when it was just too cold to do anything in the basement, I worked on a small project that I've been putting off; a new snowplow. My old one is a bit lobsided with lousy paint. It was my first scratchbuilding project, so what did you expect?

The new plow is built from an old 40' bulkhead flatcar I had on hand. I'm going to add a (non-working) headlight, possibly ice breakers, and if I'm feeling really ambitious, non-operating "wings" like on a Jordan Spreader...

Here it is unpainted (it will be black and yellow) and unfinished (still need to add a lot, plus trim parts of the plow) next to the old plow.

Well I picked up 2 books from the LHS yesterday and boy am I impressed!

http://www.soeeborg.dk/books.html

Both are very complete, and I didn't expect them to be so complete! They are packed with detailed information, especially Done in a Day. There is an endless amount of information on weathering, and it is really easy too. I really recommend that you pick them up.

And Ty, the road looks good, and keep us posted on the plow!

Crap!! My entire post just got deleted! Here it goes again (in a much shorter form).

Tyler: Thanks! But I don't think there will be any progress any time soon because lacrosse starts tomorrow, and it's six days a week. The road and plow look great!

I don't know if anyone remembers my World History project that I did back in December (on Alexander the Great, and I used modeling techniques on the scenery). Well, I have another one, this time on the Middle Ages. I'm going to build a Medieval castle (I was thinking about a Cathedral, but it would be too complicated). I'll scratchbuild the structure from styrene, use model stuff for the scenery, and Realistic Water for the moat. Should be pretty cool.

Ty, looking good so far. I have a couple of questions though;
1. On the track leading to the tower by the station (1st and 2nd photo) is there a trasition between the cork and the layout surface?
2. Does the track in that area go through the middle of the road or off to the side?

OB, happy belated Bday.

Nothing new for me. I mooched of a friend's Walther's order for shipping. I got a BN box (can't remeber if it was a 60 or an 86 foot car) and a CNW covered hopper. Pics when those and my U33Cs get here.

Vincent: Yes, there is a transition between the cork and layout surface. I just haven't filled it in yet. Trains run fine and don't flex the track at all, so filling it in is less of a priority than getting the rest of the layout running again.

And how is the rolling stock I sent you running?
