It's so dark I can hardly tell the blue from the black. I can't read the text at all.

***Ray, cool pic of the steamer.

Thank you Rob!  I like the circus wagons.  Hope that snake doesn't get loose in here, we'll lose all the waitresses.....Laugh

I finally stared to work on some Telegraph/Signal line Poles for the layout tonight.  I had bought some small white insulators that I had hoped to use for these a year or so ago.  After spending an hour trying to locate them, I finally found them in the last place I looked.....Whistling   Tried one out on the scale crossarm and it is grossly over scale for that use.  So looking around the net, I found a place that makes them.  Any of you ever do business with Sierra Scale Models?  The owner is supossedly an NMRA Master Model Railroader so I would think these ought to be the right size (and they are advertised for line pole crossarms....)

I have been ready to crash all afternoon, and did for about 2 hours earlier.  Laid down on the floor near the nice hot wood stove with a book on trackside details.  The next thing I knew it was 2 hours later.  Sometime during my nap, the power went off for a bit.  Never even heard the alarm on the Battery backup for the computer system.  Must not have off for very long as the battery back up kept the computer and needed peripherals going.   Did have to reset several clocks in the house.

Luke I like your logo.  Very classy!  You might want to try a lighter shade of blue to give it a bit more contrast....?????

Have a great night everyone!

Evening y'all, I'll just take a bowl of vanilla ice cream with a little hot fudge over it (dunno why but I crave ice cream more when its cold than any other time).  The daughter is in bed, the wife is getting some things ready for the daughter for tomorrow, and I'm about to go and stare at the back of my eyelids for a few hours.  Pretty uneventful night overall, I think that I'm going to do some railfanning tomorrow, and see about getting some super-detail parts for two of my engines (Athearn blue box GP40-2, and a Life Like GP38) and some new decals so I can probably start to repaint process on both of them.  Other than that, this is Bama, signing off!

Hello everybody....

It looks like several of you are getting a lot done with your layouts and trains. Great!

Ray. I like that nicely detailed and weathered 0-6-0 on your S L O W RR.

I am progressing with my corner-of-layout, village scene. Now it will have 10 houeses, a church, a cemtary, and a covered bridge over a stream. The doubled main line of the railroad will cross over the stream with a pair of girder bridges.

Thanks for kind remarks about BIL Nick. Fortunately, his speech is not badly impacted. The P. T. should correct most of the problems due to the stroke.

Has Inch or anyone report on Jerry lately? Also, I think of Ed when I run my N de M boxcars, and I wonder if anyone has heard from him.

An article in the local paper shows it just does not pay to be a deer anymore.  A deer jumped through a large glass window into a local landromat. In a state of panic, the deer ran around in circles between washing machines. Finally, somebody held a door open while people got it to run out the door. That is when the deer ran into a road and was killed when hit by a car.

Happy Model Railroading.

I redid my logo. Here it is:

Luke:

Neat logo, I like it.  Now I'm going to become the teacher I've been for the last 150 years and correct your spelling:  It's CaliFORnia (don't forget the 'R') and 'WHERE the railroads meet'  not WERE.

Or did you know that all along and were just trying to test us? Wink

Otherwise your 'redo' is really impressive. Tongue

Howdy, I think I’ll try some of that chamomile tea Barry is so fond of I hope it’s hot.

I just walked off my supper walking around the neighborhood and discovered I’m a lone wolf. I was also pleased to see so many others are the same.Yeah!! Once again I’m impressed with the way everyone gets along on this forum. Oh I ’m sure there is a tussell every now and then, but mostly everyone respects everyone else’s enjoyment of the hobby.

Robby- Great video. I’ll chime in on the train comments . Looks very real.

Luke- I like it. Good job. I can’t create anything without seeing it first.

Rob- you know I’ve seen circus stuff before but since you’ve been talking about it, boy I see more stuff than I ever have before. Maybe I just never noticed. I can see how your budget may be stretched with all that stuff available.

Everybody (whispering so Rob can’t hear) He didn’t give a list…..The super secret couch potato protective formula spiked pie worked. Wonder how long til it wears off?Mischief

Ray- I often keep looking after I find something just so it isn’t always in the last place I look.Laugh

I’ve been piddling with my layout and I’ve come to the conclusion that one of the difficult things for me is selective compression.. I always want to say something like, “no that’s too close to the tracks, or no there isn’t enough parking space or a semi truck couldn’t make that turnaround. But I’m getting there. I look at all these layouts and say wow that looks great how did they do that. Gotta keep compression, within limits of course, up front in my mind.Banged Head

Oh my look at the time gotta go. Prayers to those in need.

Good morning all,

Looks like I’m way behind on the posts already so I’ll sit in the back and try to catch up. I keep hearing rumors of a bad ice storm heading our way this week.  It snowed again yesterday and topped us off with about 18” of new snow on the ground.

I finished laying the track in the SW corner of the layout last night and ran a locomotive around to test everything out.  Seems ok, but I don’t have power to the #1 main.  I’ll have to do some serious trouble shooting tonight.  I did a quick inventory on my layout and it seems I have 48 turnouts on the layout so far, all but 3 of them are used items I picked up at the various train shows.

Robby, nice video.

 Good morning.

It's 32 and partly cloudy. The high is expected to be around 60 and it will be partly cloudy.

Got the interior background pieces for the Shell station printed up yesterday and spent nearly 2 hours cutting them out. I put them together into a wall last night and installed it in the sales area of the station. Wouldn't you know the wall would warp later on. Too late to do anything about it now. I'll just have to live with it. Today I plan to do some work on mt Walther's engine house. It has two doors that are close together. That's always bugged me. I plan to remove the center section and make it one wide door, then I can lay two tracks in side by side without needing a certain length of track (which I don't have) to clear a turnout to clear the center section. By removing the center section I don't need that run of track. Still need to start work on the foundation of the Midtown Consolidators building as well.

Good Morning All,

Still a bit grumpy about the Giants yesterday but what can you do. Kudos to the Eagles who won but The Giants just made up for the impossible events of last season. SoapBox enought of that it's back to trains. Oh, and I'll have a regular to go please.

Luke I like the second run through of the logo and with the spelling corrected t's a winner.

Robbie, the weathered boxcars are spot on. Love your work.

Ray, the locomotive looks superb as well as the backround. Love it.

Rob, I'll keep my eyes open for any of the old Athearn circus flats when I go wander at Springfield this month. You'll need a fleet to move all those wagons. You'll also need some more heavyweights for all the entertainers and hands to ride in.

Jeff - the interior warped or not makes a huge difference. Nice work.Thumbs Up

Well - lots to do again today better get to it.    CUL, J.R.

Thanks for all of the comments.  Let me see, I will take a bowl of oatmeal, and milk.  I kinda messed my breakfast up this morning.

Looks like old man winter is getting some of us on here again this morning.  Right now we have about a 1in. here, and snow flurries right now.  I believe they are calling for snow flurries all day and 1-3ins. tomorrow.

On my to do list today.  Clean the house up some, and head to the basement.  I would like to start on weathering up the engine, and move some track around.

I will be back in for lunch.  I guess I will start to clean the house up Dead.

Looks like I pay today.  Just leave me the tab.  I will let the wife pay,  since she deals with the money.  So go easy!!!!!!

Jeff, (fuel pumps) I have a few modern fuel pumps.  No use for the more modern fuel pumps on my layout.  You’re welcome to what I have.  I also have a few detail parts for a gas station in my detail parts drawer.  WOW I really like the interior shot of that gas station!  I’ll collect all the Gas Station stuff and send it out this week, give me a couple of days to sort through my detail drawer.

Jim, thanks but I have enough snow to tide me over for a while.  On my decoder address I came up with a numbering system to help me remember who is who. The first number = the number of drivers so a Mikado or a mountain will be an 800 series locomotive and a Pacific will be a 600 series locomotive. The 0-6-0 switcher will be a 60 series and the 0-4-0 will be a 40 series.  The articulated locomotives will be similar however they will be a 4 digit address.  The Challenger will be a 6000 series and the Duplex/mallet will be an 8000 series.  The second number in the series will be how many pilot wheels the locomotive has so if I have two 4-8-2 the numbers will be 841 & 842.

Sounds confusing but I think it will work for me since my friends that use the layout all have diesels using 2 digit addressing.

GMT & ROB, how is the reconstruction progress?  Any new pictures to share?

See what happens when you work on the layout; you get behind on all the diner posts!  I think I spent 16 hours on the SW corner, but I laid, wired and painted 6 turnouts and 30 feet of track.  Last night I sanded the paint off the top of the rails and started to clean the rails with citrus goo gone.  Next step is to seal all the metal with Rail-Zip.  The spurs for the power plant will hold 20 full hoppers and the empty track will hold 25 cars.  The 2 spurs for the steel mill should hold 30 ore jennys.

Mornin' all.  Pretty brisk here this morning.  I'l have a hot chocolate, biscuits n gravy, with a side of bacon please.  Looks like old man winter has come down to visit Bama.  Right now its fairly chilly outside, and I don't think that its supposed to get any warmer.  Plan on doing some railfanning today, so far, I've only heard one set of train trumpets, and they were at 5:40 this morning (didn't feel like crawling out of the bed this morning.  I'll be in and out all day long, as I can.  Guess I'll talk to y'all later on.

Luke, now you got it!  Impressive!

Mornin' everyone!  I slept in and got caught up on my sleep.  So now I'm hungry.  Zoe, I have the #2 Speacial over easy on the eggs, bacon, homefries, and some of that Sourdough bread toast.  Oh and my usual Dark Roast in a FGLK mug.

It is currently 21°F here in the Finger Lakes with a high around 27°F this afternoon.  Not much else but a few flurries now and then.  It might be a good day to clean out the driveways of the accumulated snow and start moving some of the wood from out back to the covered porch.  Already starting to get low on the Maple I cut and split last summer.  Lucky I got the 2 face cords of Locust last September.

I also have to pack up the bad amp to ship it back, take some posters around to the local schools, pick up a couple Rx at the drug store, do laundry, and find time to work on the layout.  Never should have retires, I used to have a lot more time when I was working! Confused

I'll be in the front booth so I can watch the trains go by......

The herald looks awesome!  Well, I'm off to the bank, then to my little girl's daycare (forgot to take her sleeping mat with her this morning), and then off to probably take in some railfanning down at the interchange track here in Troy.  Gotta see if I can find the camera first though, wouldn't mind getting some pictures of the choo-choo's (as the little girl calls them) as they go by.

Good Morning, Diners! Zoe, I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ and a JR regular, please. Thanks!

Luke, nice logo - my first thought when I saw it was "Is that a police RR?" Wink I'm just so used to when I see that shield shape, it's on the side of a police or highway patrol vehicle. (Picturing a guy pulled over by a Mallet, with the officer writing him out a ticket...Whistling) I like your colors on the newest logo - much more readable, and I like the gold star even better, too. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the link on the interiors, Jeff. Looks like that site has a bunch of stuff. Some of it might be too new for my layout, but I'm sure there will be plenty enough I can use. Smile Nice job on the Shell station interior, too!Bow

Rob, we weren't really jumping on you, the guys were just afraid their CFO's would see that and expect the same level out of them.Smile,Wink, & Grin We know that even the busiest Diner has days when less gets done (rainy downpours, etc.). I think your wife's layout may end up dwarfing yours (in My 2 cents as much as in size..). Nice wagons there. Thumbs Up

Ray, I'd say you must have been either short on sleep, or working pretty hard lately (or both), from your body deciding it was going to take a good ol' nap. I'm sure the book wasn't boring, so that wasn't it.

Robby, my compliments to your wife on the video, and to you on the weathering on your cement plant (and yeah, that loco does look too clean to me, too).Wink

Lee, after seeing your post on the used turnouts, I may have to start watching more closely for used turnouts at the next train show I attend. For 40+ turnouts, that amounts to a few pennies saved. Yeah!!Smile Hope you don't get the ice storm after all.

This morning's weather was saying that the upper Midwest was going to get hit with some snow, and then the cold air from NOTB is to follow it through. So that may mean that Inch 'n' Jerry and our Ohio Valley Diners may be getting some chilly breezes soon. Brrrrrrr!! But it could be worse - I heard that Fairbanks (Alaska) had -48 F yesterday.Shock

And speaking of Jerry - Inch, where are you, guy? What's going on up your way, and any news on Jerry?

Bama, hope you find the camera and get a chance for some good photos at the interchange track today.

The singles chili supper was fun last night - we had a little bit low attendance for it, but the regular chili still ran out (one guy got the remainder of the 'white chili' (chicken, and white beans) to take home, and I got about three desserts to bring to w**k today so they'd get polished off. Now if I'd brought them in to the Diner, they'd be gone already now...Smile,Wink, & Grin) We had a fun time, and played Catch Phrase (uses an electronic gadget for phrases you try to get your team to guess, before the buzzer goes off - anyone here ever played it?).

We're cold and grey clouds today, but no precip. in the forecast. MRR club tonight (I missed the last two meetings), supposed to be doing some soldering on the wiring, so I'll take my puny soldering iron along. Need to pay my dues and for the two Athearn cabeese kits I got. I was fiddling with my (enlarged, room size) layout plan over the weekend, running my mine track off a passing track in the #2 town (Many Farms) instead of putting the switch on the mainline just at the edge of town. Still need to smooth out the curves on that track as it goes to the girder bridge over the mainline. I'll post a pic of the revised plan later (tonight or tomorrow).

Prayers for comfort and healing for those in need AngelAngel, and for enough wood to keep the home fires nice and comfy warm.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good morning.......

Lee..... You have the right idea about buying turnouts (other items, too) second hand. My opinion: stick with a budget, and the hobby will be more enjoyable. Prototype RR's have budgets and adhere to them, too.

Bama....... I have relatives South of B'ham. I've passed thru Troy to/from FL, and I recall it being a nice looking community. I'kll have to pay more attention next time.

Luke........I, too, like the logo. I'm trying to imagine it on a boxcar. Car shops used stencils to apply logos.

Cheers,  everybody..............

Flip:  I'm pages behind too, and so haven't yet seen if anyone answered your Peco turnout question. The answer from my experience is that 1) underneath is the scenicly neatest solution unless you have a way to hide the rather large plastic gizmo Peco provides for table mounting to either side. I've used them in buildings, and where my passing tracks are in tunnels (do I hear purists gasp?).

The D10 motor is sitting on top of the plastic thingy here, and this one is hidden in a shed that is itself behind some grain silos.

If your underside mounting is in a spot where the layout is thick, there is an extension of the actuating rod possible through an add on by means of a brass sleeve. It's more complicated, as the motor has to be in one of those plastic things, mounted to the underside of the layout, with the extended rod going up through however many layers of layout and subroad bed and road bed and turnout it takes.  I've used that before, but have no photos.

In mounting, Peco recommend cetering the point rails in the turnout (hold in place with strips of card?) with the throw rod also cetered in the machine.

Hope this helps.

A small, please & thank you.

***Jeffrey, that station is really coming along nicely. Interior touches are excellent.

***Luke, I had not noticed the miss spelling either. Guess the brain sometimes fills in what's missing.

***Lee, carpet should go in shortly and then it's just more little fiddly stuff I'll need to do to complete the project. Getting very close to finished now, thank goodness!

***Ray, what kind of amp?

***Jim, you're right about the wife's layout "growing". I told her just yesterday a 4'x8' wouldn't be anywhere near large enough to encompass all she wants to do. A 4'x12' might come close if the plan maximizes use of that space effectively. Time will tell.

Still have a headache, although not at severe as it got last night. A bit nauseous and the BP is up. When the wife (a nurse) asks you, "Are you dying?", it's probably time to see the Doc again. Takes a lot to get me there, but I'll go. Need to do critter rounds first though.

Have a good day all.

Almost lunchtime already!  How's everyone doing?  How about chicken fried steak?  Don't see that around here too much.  Some onion rings, and 7up please.

My CSX are Blueline sound models w/ decoders installed.  The MODIN Funits used to have stainless grills on them but they fell off.  Tha A units have handrail details etc on Athearn BB units.  DCC would be nice to be able to run them together.  They are powered but where static display with a passenger set.  The Modin A-10 is a Railpower products shell and chassis w/ a can motor I built years (10?) ago.  It has first gen. MRC dcc and yes it still runs.  These were items I keep on the shelf at home.  I have a bunch of stuff at the folks house.  I like setting up diorama's and photgraphing them.  Now I have people to show them to!

Jeff, the interiors really set off the station!

Jim & Garry, I found the right price on used turnouts for #4 and #6 brass is $2 per turnout, Nickel Silver is $5.  WYE’s, curved, and 3 way turnouts in brass is $10. The trick with the brass is to use a stainless steel wire wheel on the ends before you install a track clip and solder them in place, I also run a feeder wire set to every brass turnout to prevent power drop.  Then I paint them and sand off the top of the rails, then apply rail-zip to seal the metal to prevent oxidation.  It’s a little bit of work but every 10 turnouts you save $97.50.  You must use a stainless steel wire brush because it doesn’t leave containment behind that will eventually degrade the brass in the rail. I use a Dremel stainless steel wire wheel ($3 at HD).  Also if you don’t paint them they will turn green in about 2 months where you soldered them.

John, I plan on trying the push rod method for my remote turnouts. Using conduit clamps mounting a dowel rod under the layout to push and pull the turnouts

Cederstrand
***Ray, what kind of amp?

It's a Behringer A500 Studio Reference Amp.  Got it last November and hadn't used it until the Holidays working on a CD for a client.  Gave me a scratchy sound.  Sounded like a blown Speaker driver.  When I changed out the Old Tannoy Near Field Monitor speakers with brand new pair of Alesis Monitor One MKIIs, the sound was still bad.  Hooked up my old Stewart amp that I thought was blown, and it sounds great........  So the place where I bought all this stuff is going to replace the Behringer on warranty for me.

Rob, hope that the headache and nausea are nothing serious.  Get yourself to the Doc though!

Got the snow cleared out of the Driveways this morning.  Think the transmission on the old snowblower is on its last legs. Sometimes it turns the wheels and sometimes everything locks up.  Hopefully it will get me through the season and I can get it looked at over the summer.

My cats are reminding me that it is almost lunch time for them.  Flo, you still serving that Catfish Platter that I saw Jeffrey chowing down on a couple days ago.  Hopefully it is fresh catfish? Pour me a mug of decafe to go along with that will ya.
