Morning all,
a round of HOT coffee for everybody!
Reminds me that the day after Thanks Giving sale at Home Depot they passedout hot coffee to all of us early bird shoppers because it was chilly. Nice gesture on their part. Warmed my gloved hands and my soul.
It is, as many of you already know, cold here. We are on the plus side of zero, but barely. I don't think it's actually going to get as cold as they thought here though.
RYAN I gather your father has prostate cancer. I must have missed your posting on it. My father is now a 15 year survivor of prostate cancer. He had his removed through Cryo {sp?} surgery whereby they freeze out the cells and extract. So there IS hope. Since your father has prostate cancer, I hope you will be getting checked regularly by a urologist as well! Heredity can be a nasty thing. I have been getting checked since my father's cancer and even in my early 30's had benign elargement episodes. My father's father also had prostate cancer. We shall set up a prayer candle for your and yours.
I can't wait for spring. I'm itching to go to Steamtown to watch them play with the steam locos. *Alas*
I can only watch some Utube vids of steamtown and other railroads running steam until spring comes....including some of the excursions we have been on. Anybody want some links to Utube steamtown vids???
Have a great day everyone and stay warm!

Good morning. It's a balmy 25 and partly cloudy out here by the lake this morning with a wind chill of 17. Glad I'm sitting here in a nice toasty 70. I got very little done on the layout yesterday. I had all these plans about what would get done but as usual other things got in the way. With these low temps coming through I had to do some things to prepare for it. I was busy sealing up whatever gaps I could find. That 'Great Stuff' gap filler is great stuff. I had one window (32''w by 17''h) that refused to quit being drafty so it got filled in with the stuff. Ain't no draft there now! I also took the precaution of changing out the antifreeze in my car since it hadn't been done in a couple of years. That's all I'd need is a frozen block. As for what to do today, yesterdays plans are now today's plans, and just you watch! Old Murphy's gonna snicker! Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 1/16/2009 Wind Chill: 17°F (-8°C) Humidity: 66% Dew Point: 15°F (-9°C) So Far Today High: 29°F (-2°C) Low: 25°F (-4°C) Rain: 0.00" Rain Rate: 0.00"/h Gust: 10mph ENE Hard freeze warning in effect until 10 AM cst this morning. Good Morning Diners!
There's a cool -44C windchill this morning so I'm leaving late for work so I can give my wife a ride. We live very close to the Uni where she works but we are the last bus stop and often they just don't stop. Good news is that it is supposed to be up to -7C by Sunday and zero Monday. Remember what I said a while ago about the forecast of +2 Sunday? Oh well, it is certainly better than the -25 for today.
Ryan, my thoughts are with you and your Dad. Comments by others are true in that it is very treatable these days. I know that my uncle was treated very successfully for it. I am enjoying your RR menus.
Think I'll actually run some trains tonight. My little Consolidation needs a good run.
Keep that hot coffee coming Chloe!
CN Charlie
Good morning!!
I'll have the biscuits and gravy Zoe.
Last night I added air compressors on the front of my Bachmann Spec. 2-8-0. I'll post pics later...
See you all later!

good morning all! It's as cold here as we've known it -20C (that's a bit below 0F) and here's what that does to the sea ...
that's ice fog, with which Fergie is all too familiar.
Have to get ready for Kris' mom's weekly hairdo appointment run to the Harbour. Hope the van warms up well.

Biscuits and gravy please.
It was a lovely -18 this morning when I got up! Factor in the wind chill and that dropped it to -33. Needless to say, it was a "might" brisk out there! Had to go out and let the car run for about 20 minutes before I took off today. Didn't want the radiator to freeze up on me, ya know?
Good Morning!
Just trying to get started today! The coffee is flowing, so I'll be OK.
It's supposed to warm up through the day, and even into this evening. They're saying that we should actually be near 4 degrees at or around midight.

Currently a nice warm 7°F outside here in the Finger Lakes although thye say it fells like it is -13°F. High will get up to around 10° so other than bringing in wood for the stove, I will find indoor stuff to do today.
Mark great work on "Watermellon Man"! One of my favorites! I see your director's ax is trumpet. Our local Middle School Band director is also trumpet major and a rock/soul musician. Plays lead trumpet with these guys: http://www.thelegendarydukes.com/ (He is Nick) You might like their stuff, they have several CDs out.
I see my breakfast is off the grill so I'll be by the window watchin' the trains!

Looks like may get the railroad uncovered today...
Ray...Checked out the Legendary Dukes Nice sound...The Jailhouse Rock cut has some nice Trumpet work...I used to play some..Played 2 seasons for a feller that had been band leader for Ringling Brothers and He had many of their old charts Had to sight read some...
You all have a good one....Jerry
Morning all.
Howmus: He tends to play the trumpet the most, but he can play just about everything... Guitar, Bass, Saxophone, Drums, Piano... all sorts of stuff.
GMTRacing: For the most part I am self-taught also. I've had two instructers, one of them told me how to do the single stroke roll, paradiddle, triplet, and flam. The other taught me how to play a basic jazz beat... Everything you see here is 2.5 years of my studying and playing to Led Zeppelin, and other classic rock bands.
Mark
Howdy all, Brrrrrr was it cold yesterday. Thanks for the coffee. Tastes goood and hot. Would have been here sooner but somebody abandoned a hunk of junk in the middle of the road. Looked like an old Pacer.
I hibernated yesterday. Started to get in a good day in Toddavania, of which I am King, but a friend of mine called and said another friend of ours needed our help to get her father into the truck as she thinks he had another stroke.(Why not call the rescue squad???) He seemed fine when we got there for just having a stoke last Thurs also. Anyway then my bud asked if he could come over and download an Anti-virus program for his new computer as it was some big number and on dial-up it would take three days or something. So I said OK, I have cable, how long could this take? NINE HOURS LATER!!! He’s leaving. When he gets here he decides to shop around some more. Then check out Youtube videos about some human slingshot. Then download 497 Mb of Vista updates and on and on. Never did get an anti-virus. I’m not mad or anything , this guy is like a brother to me, and this is typical of events he gets involved with.
But… I did get to run my Amtrak over the new addition. This is a mix of old Bachmann and Atherrn (I think) cars I got off of the bay that need some wheel work and will de-rail easy, real easy so if they make the round, you’re good to go. So far the only problem is on the old section. One is a 3 axle job and the radius on the inner loop is too tight for it. It’ll go but sloooowly and as it is around a small town it should go slow to the station anyway. “Tuck and roll grandma!” I’ve also developed a hump over a culvert and I’ve put a joint there (yeah I know and I did it anyway ) so I have to re-work that. This time I’m gonna split the track so the joint isn’t on the culvert.
Today it’s still cold but not to be as cold so I’m going to take a caliper back for core and stop by the other LHS to pick up some metal roofing for a couple of building projects and then hopefully get that last 4 feet of track laid so I can complete the loop and can just let the trains run. That seems to be the section I’ve had the most trouble completing. Something always comes up.
Bama- You ever have a truck that just wouldn’t get a good pedal? Man I work on this thing for a week. (Translation: Lost money) Everything is right and no air. They are happy with it, says it’s better than it’s ever been but I don’t like it. I don’t care what the dealer says it ain’t right. Just because it’s 20 years old, with everything new when you step on a brake pedal you should KNOW it.
Ryan so sorry to hear about you father, Prayers for him, you and your family.
Terry in Texas- Thanks for the local of Envirotex was gonna ask that same question. Sounds pretty popular.
Picked up an Atlas Dash 8 40bw on the bay for 30 bucks. Looks like it hasn’t had anything attached yet. But the seller said the motor was sluggish. We’ll see. Even if it has to have a new motor I should still be OK for the price. Don’t know. I was hesitant as I haven’t had good luck with locos or cars off the bay. Hopefully this time….
Sue- does this mean you are a Biker Chick? Or have you been one. (My buddies girlfriend doesn’t really care for the term “biker chick”)
Mark- Excellent job. (applause). Reminds me of the band I played in in high school. Ah the memories. I could just picture……
ICE FOG!! Ho-lee Cow. Move over Terry, I'm headin' back to the motherland
Jeffery- Have you considered maybe putting a cinder block in that hole through the back window? Maybe you could claim vandalism and get some insurance money. Just don’t tell Roggie.
Refill on the coffee please, I’ll shut up now and go sit with the others and watch. No window seat for me. Too cold.

in a UNION PACIFIC mug and please leave the pot close by. Thanks!
The high today is 30F with tonight dropping down to 12F. Not cold compared to some of you folks, but for me it still means breaking ice 1 1/2" think in all the troughs so our critters can drink. A few were very thirsty this morning.
***Mark, that's a real catchy beat. Good job!
***Sue, congrats on the new arrival. Will the 250 Ninja smoke the hubby's bike?
***Lee, on the bright side, at least you didn't have to walk (or skate, ski, snowshoe, etc...) into work the last 4 miles,or did you? Bummer about your truck though.
Might start digging though the scrap lumber for the makings of a train table, or shelf.
Rob
Sounds like Rob wants to wrap himself around the coffee pot to get warm. It's just gotten up to the freezing mark here. 32°.
jeffrey-wimberly gear-jammerJeff, I sure like the interior of your shell station. Great detail.Thanks. I'm not finished with it yet. I still have to scratch together a checkout counter.

Can't wait.

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Looks like I buy. All of you who are waiting for the bike photos get extra (Lee and Barry).
Cederstrand ***Sue, congrats on the new arrival. Will the 250 Ninja smoke the hubby's bike?
Rob, Not even close, but it is peppy.
Todd, Since I ride a dirt bike, biker chick does sound strange.
gear-jammer Hey, those of you who have been waiting with me. My 250 Ninja came in. Larry will pick it up for me on Saturday.

Congrats biker chick! We'll need pics you know! (And you aren't on a dirt bike any more!)

A bowl of KY burgoo, please.
You Canadians will have to tell us if the globally warming conferance is in Canada this year.

Ryan........ I'm very sorry to learn the news about your Dad.
Everybody.... Let's vote. Was Jeff's Pacer more ugly before or after he customized it?

Hey ya'll, winterjam was AWESOME last night!!!!! Got to do a bit of railfanning before it too, the parking lot beside the arena has a CSX line right besdie it, and A train w/ two GEs (a newer one, and an old B30-7 I tihnk) came by. also saw tobymac walking in while we were waiting in line. Hawk nelson rocked the place, but tobymac blew the roof off of it. Also had a few lesser known bands there. Newosng opened it up, but Hawk nelson is the band that really kicked it off.

WELL!
Our pipes have now frozen!!!
I hope this does not happen to others! I have not yet seen anyone complaining about that YET, Just frozen cars.
We have a tub drain frozen and a hot water line {believe or not} in the kitchen frozen. We do live in a mobile home, but To the tune of $3,200.00 3 years ago we had all plumbing replaced and new heat tapes applied. They insulated everything real well, put in new heat tape everywhere. AND we were guaranteed at that time to never again have frozen pipes, regardless of how cold it got! They lied!
Now they say they can't do anything until after 4pm, which is after hours overtime blah blah blah and there is no guarantee that the Pex piping won't freeze, just that if it does, it won't break when it freezes.
WE insist on fighting them over it as it will get colder tonight. We do somewhere have a kerosene bumblebee heater for such things, but where it is and getting to the underside of the trailer is another matter. And with a guarantee of no more frozen pipes, we didnt think we needed it anymore.
I certainly HOPE it does not happen to you others....especially those who live in Mobile homes....!!!
More coffee please!!!!!
UGH!
galaxyWE insist on fighting them over it as it will get colder tonight. We do somewhere have a kerosene bumblebee heater for such things, but where it is and getting to the underside of the trailer is another matter. And with a guarantee of no more frozen pipes, we didnt think we needed it anymore.
Gotta say Galaxy, a guarenteed warrenty is just that. If they don't stand behind it then I'd say you need to take some sort of recourse. Around here, the fastest way to do that is to contact the local TV news station. They eat those kind of stories up. Often, if you let the company know you're going to tell your story on TV, they'll fix it right quick!
jeffrey-wimberly galaxyWE insist on fighting them over it as it will get colder tonight. We do somewhere have a kerosene bumblebee heater for such things, but where it is and getting to the underside of the trailer is another matter. And with a guarantee of no more frozen pipes, we didnt think we needed it anymore. If the guaranty said no more FROZEN pipes then it should be exactly that. Since you have frozen pipes they either didn't do the job properly or you got scammed by a dishonest contractor. Happens all the time down here. People have taken to doing their own plumbing/winterizing work because there are so many fly-by-night companies around.
Well, Jeffery, this is no fly-by-night. They ARE well respected (and somewhat expensive). {They are still here 3 years later}.
They now say there is never a guarantee against frozen pipes for anybody, anywhere, anytime.
BUT, I asked three times about the "no frozen pipes" issue and was assured live, in person, by their plumber who did the work that we would never again have that issue.
What surprises me is that here on the forum more have not complained about frozen pipes. Frozen cars, yes, but not pipes yet.
We will go back to leaving the water running when it gets sorted out.
Have a great *cool* day everyone
Looks like I have several pages to read. Been busy last 2 days putting a new heater duct assembly in the bosses GMC 2500. He melted the rubber on the blend doors so air came out ALL the vents
I did read about Ryan's Dad. My Dad, 85, was diagnosed in November with Pancreatic Cancer. He is a candidate for Chemo, but other things keep going wrong. First it was Jaundice, then a blood clot.. My Mom who is 80 has been going nuts balancing Medicare, supplimenatal insurance, the case workers, rehab centers, etc. Maybe someday they will treat the cancer. As has been said, it seems to grow slower with age. This is Dad's third round with cancer of some sort. He 's an ornery sob but he keeps on ticking..
Well, the boss is looking for his truck. I'll try and catch up and join you folks for dinner later.
Keeping the faith, Eric
Mid-morning Lunchtime, Diners - Zoe, how about a roast beef open face sandwich, bowl of chili, and a RBF, please. Thanks!
I forgot to mention last night - Johnboy, you could actually get a bit warmer by moving northwest(?) to Fairbanks, which I heard yesterday was warmer than our Ohio Valley folks' temps. Go figure on that!
We're up to 3 F today (and mercifully, no wind for now). 'Only' supposed to drop to 8 or 10 F tonight, and then warm back up to the 30's or 40's on Saturday.
That was amazing on the plane that crash-landed into the Hudson River in NY yesterday. Nobody was hurt, no doubt due to the good thinking of the pilot and first officer, and the folks on the ground (and in the boats and ferries near where the plane went into the water). They're calling it a miracle this morning on the TV, and rightfully so (IMHO). Bird-strike, they think - a flock of them in front of the plane on takeoff.
And PC? It's
F R I D A Y ! !
Barry, the tilted poles is a thing we MRR'ers sometimes forget to include when modeling power/utility/signal line poles. And I can recall seeing some skewed ones when I was younger, all right.
JR, hope that meeting is lower-level stuff, and the inspector doesn't tell everybody to clear the whole lot and restart from scratch. They need to get moving on your house so you can at least be moving in this spring.
Paul, good to hear your ROF status is not in jeopardy. Hope you have a little flex in today so you can get another one in.
DerJohn, that's good news on your Geep's noise level (and on the decoders, too).
Sue, you sound a little bit excited about your new wheels... Hope you have fun once you and Larry go get it.
Garry, I'd say I liked Jeff's Pacer after phase I of the 'weathering' (when it was silver & rust colored..) vs. the yellow and rust scheme. I just like the silver offsetting the rust better. YMMV...
And Barry, Johnboy and CN Charlie - do let us know on that GW conference if they'll be holding it in Canada - some of us have to book our transportation early (not that many dogsled tickets around, y'know!
Galaxy - simply put, that sucks! Hope you get them to do the right thing (if you use them ever again..).As for others' complaints of frozen pipes, they may just have not discovered it yet. I think Jeff and PC have given you some useful advice. 'Nuff said!
Refill on coffee please. What’s all the hollerin about.? Sorry to hear about that Galaxy. I know exactly what you mean when you say that LATER, they could not have given a guarantee like that. I agree with the others. Um… sounds silly (but it happens, I too lived in a mobile home for a few years) is the tape “plugged in”? I know someone who had their tape replaced and the workers didn’t hook it up. Just a thought. For some reason and the younguns in school could probably explain it, but hot water freezes faster than cold. I remember fillin the dog bowl up as a kid and trying to do the pooch a favor. Some favor.
Sue- Dirt Bikes eh. Your right ain’t no biker chic rides dirt bikes!!
Yes siree bob. Someone was watchin that plane for sure. Odd the way things happen by…..coincidence. Coincidence..yeeeaa riiiiight..
Earl Grey Tea please, and a Lassy Mog. Could you pop the molasses cookie in the microwave for 20 secs to get back that "just baked" feel? Thanks!
Sue: Congratulations on the new bike! Is this going to mean less time to work on the layout? BTW, your dealer seems to have sent you a spurious photo of the Nija, but it ended up in PC's mailbox for some reason. Server problems? Then they sent another, but I got it...so here's the real deal
LOL. Anxiously waiting photos of your stream bed 'though...it should look great! How many pours will it take?
Thanks for the encouraging words about the Cryogenic surgery your father had. I've passed that on to a pastor in one of our churhces who was recently diagnosed.
Definitely treadmill tonight, not walking in these temperatures, wind or not! That's later, for now there's maybe enough time before dinner to see why my RDC stuck on a turnout last night.
Good afternoon guys and gals.
Its another cold day. As of right now (4:00pm), 5deg, and windchill is -13. Oh is it cold. The heater in the house can't keep up.
I worked my one day today. Its like a new job, just working one day a week.
I guess the wife and I will go to Texas Roadhouse for dinner. If any body wants something, I can ship it. It will be safe I am sure, its so cold out!!!
I will be back in the morning for breakfast.
