Give me some OJ, and some cereal.  Not to hungry.

Well the same here, another cold day.  The high will be 10, and the low -5.  We got about 3 inchs last night.  I know the snow isn't going to melt anytime soon.

Finally found out what was making holes in the flower bed.  A baby rabbit.  The snow gave that away.  You see little feet hopping all over the place, and back in the hole.  I can't kill a baby rabbit, so I will leave it alone, and maybe it will leave.  This spring I will see about doing something so they don't come back.

I guess I will work on the layout some, and maybe take it easy today.

Well everybody stay warm.  Its a cold one.

Good morning,  Chloe.  I will have a quick coffee on my way out the door.

Lee,  I have only used the WS Realistic Water.  I put the amount that I plan to use is a cup and tint it with railroad tie brown and pour 1/8 inch deep. No skill involved.  Maybe someone else has used another brand.

Terry,  I see that you have been busy scratch building again.  I love the faded white wash effect.

Later,

Sue

Oatmeal and a tea please Zoe.

Feeling a bit under the weather, no pun intended.  Have some chronic health issues that sometimes get the better of me. Looks like a good day to stay in bed anyway.

Ray, I meant to ask.  Do you 'wire' your poles?  If so, what do you use?  On my last HO layout I wired the poles up front using a black embroidery thread because it was thinner than regular thread and had no fuzzies.

Thanks Sue  I'm finished with the houses now

I too started out using WS Realistic Water but found out it never truly hardens and over time

as dust builds up some of the dust sinks into the water then when you try to clean it

it leaves scratches

If i had know that i would have covered it when the lay out was not in use

Morning all, just got caught up on all the posts.  Couldn't really get in here yesterday, twas busy all day long.  Did two tune ups, one brake job, and about three oil changes.  Busy day for me (since I'm a one-man mechanic).  Didn't even get a chance to get down to the tracks yesterday.  Its 9am and I don't have a single vehicle to play with yet, so I might call it a morning and head down to the tracks.  Or I might hang out here in the house and see what I can do about getting some detail parts for my Athearn GP40-2, and for me Proto/Life-Like GP38-2.  Chloe, I'll have two waffles, order of sausage, and a bowl of grits with cheese on top, with a hot chocolate please ma'am.

Mornin' everyone from the frozen Finger Lakes.

Currently at the high for the day of 8°F.  Low tonight will be -3°F.  This is the coldest we have been in 2 years around here.  I remember periods when I was a kid growing up when it stayed -15° for a week or more.  The last time remember cold like that I was living in an 8' x 70' mobile home in Oakfield, NY.  You could see frost near the floor at every wall stud.  That is on the inside of the trailer, BTW.

Dick it will be a "Three Dog Night" tonight!  Last night I got by with just two cats.  One sleeping on my feet, and the other snuggled in my arms all night.

Zoe, I'll have a hunk of that Cinnamon  Walnut Coffee Cake along with my usual mug of Dark Roast Coffee (don't forget the FGLK mug).

I have debated whether or not to "wire" the poles.  If I was in O gauge I would, but in HO I am not so sure.  I most probably go with the advise of many MMRs who say don't.  Wiring them would be very difficult in most of the places they will be placed (long reach) and in other places would be something to constantly knock down.........  If I do decide to wire the ones at the front, it will be while before I am at that point.   I ordered the glass beads for the insulators last night and promptly got a nice e-mail from the guy who owns the business.  He said he would be home in a couple of days from his vacation in Hawaii.  He mentioned that he was able to go due the enormous profit he had made selling beads to people like me and wanted me to know he had spent all $3.50 he had made last year on them......

Time to finish my coffee and get to w**k.

Jeff, checked and replied. BTW, great job with the Pacer! Thumbs Up

Garry, I'd like to do that right now...but work waits until 4:30 PM EDT

***Ryan, you sure are ambitious.

Here is a cheater pic of the stick bug. Still not easy to see it. Nature can produce some amazing camo.

Rob, I like to keep my projects rolling and planed ahead too!

I would have never found that stick bug without the lines. LOL

That's a scratch built shotgun style miners cabin I've built 3 of to put in a row close to the mine on my layout I put studs and floors inside on all of them.

Great work on that building! Thumbs Up What wood product are you using for the wood structures?

Good morning from Icebergville---At this time we are at -24C with a 15kmh breeze---windchill sitting at -29C. We are going to have a 'mix of sun and cloud' with a high of -13C. Tonight clearing with a low around -25C with SW winds of 30kmh ----windchill will be about -35C.

I think you got most of us beat with those temps. Our low of 11 predicted is still 46 + from your predicted low.

Brisk Downright FRIGID Morning, Zoe - I'll have a cup of hot cocoa, some scrambled eggs with bacon strips, glass of Ed's OJ, and a glass of milk, please 'n' thank you. As cold as it was this morning, there was no frost (so Barry - would that mean we had a 'dry cold' this morning? Wink). But a guy (or gal) could definitely work up an appetite just walking out there. Brrrrr! I'm not ready for winter, myself.Thumbs Down

C&O Terry, I remember those miner's shacks now. Thanks for the photo to remind me. Those are really neat-looking. Yeah!! Hey, I heard this morning that Key West has you beat on temps - they're at 63 F already (and as the weather guy said "with a wind chill of 63 F, since there's no breeze yet there." Now, if we could get a few highcube's filled with that air to ship up to the upper Midwest.... By the way, what did you use instead of the W-S water for your water areas?

Ray, the Rix poles and crossarms I mentioned have the crossarm parts separate from the poles, and you lay the crossarms to line up with some small 'notches' on the pole (for the usual spacing, but I'm sure that could be mod'ed), and only glue down however many that you want/need on that pole (one, 2, or a half dozen). You could probably add the braces for the X'es, too. They're not already put together (though I think Rix does sell some that are all together and RTR. I like them because they can be modified but are less bother than totally scratchbuilt. But whatever works for you. Thumbs Up

Jeff, if you put the fence and the tires around that Pacer, you need to find you a good junkyard dog to go with it).Smile,Wink, & Grin I'm still trying to decide which dog to use for my junkyard/transfer track area.

Luke - bummer on the TV, but good that you have another to use and watch in the meantime.

NSJoe - congrats on the goal (basketball?), Thumbs Up and enjoy those easy tests while you have 'em.

Dick, you sound as busy as one of our other ORF's, Paul. I'm reconsidering that whole 'retirement' thing; might not be as easy as I was led to believe by some folks.OopsWink Stay warm up there!

pcarrell
Is it time to hibernate yet?

Yeah, PC, if I get a vote, it is! Of course, my w**k still wants us to come in...Sad I just got in the car and pulled out in about a minute or two - my commute to w**k isn't long enough for the car to heat up much. Luckily, no problems with my apartment's heat, though I could hear it (electric baseboard) expanding/contracting this morning, doing its best  to keep up. I was thinking that if my building's power goes out, I'm out of there - to some friend's place that still has heat (anywhere in town - I won't be picky!).

Barry, if you have to get out, at least you ought to see what supplies for the layout you can score at the LHS, right? Maybe they'll have a sale to encourage people to brave the cold?

Robby P.
This spring I will see about doing something so they don't come back.

Uh, Robby - like sow carrot seed in a neighbor's yard a half mile down from you? Wink

I might just stay after finishing breakfast, with those yummy looking offerings Ryan has for our lunch (and dessert...Whistling). For now, brunchtime!

The only ones I have seen are the RTR ones.  I'll look into the ones you are mentioning.  They might work good for the hard to reach background areas.

Started this a half hour ago and got phone call from my son who wantede to make sure I was toasty warm.....  And of course at the same time one of my cats decided that it was time to climb up on my shoulder and be lovey.

So as soon as I finish "lunch" I'll be on my way.

Morning all from SunnyCal--hit 70 again here, yesterday.  Actually opened the garage door to work a little on the railroad.   And no, I'm not trying to rub it in, because we really NEED more Winter out here.  I have a feeling we're going into a 3rd year drought, and there's no weather in sight for probably the rest of the month.

I really feel for you guys in the Midwest and Northeast--I saw the highs on the Weather Channel yesterday.  Wow, that's COLD!  I sure hope you get a break from that Arctic air.  Actually, you can blame us, because this hugh high-pressure system we've got out here in the Pacific is knocking all of the cold weather over to the east, and right down over you.  I remember going through a couple of what they call "Blue Norther's" when I lived in north Texas, way back when.  Freeze your earlobes off.

Nothing much on the home-front here.  One of my ex-students has returned to Sacramento from New York to start a local professional theater group.  He was on TV this morning, and he's just as smart and funny as he was when he was one of my choral students, way back when.  I'm really proud of him, and I sure wish him good luck.  Really talented kid.  And nice as they come.

'Bama:  On those diesel details--have you tried DetailsWest?  They specialize in all kind of diesel details, they might have what you're looking for.  If you're near a hobby shop you might drop in and peruse their catalogue.  They do for diesel fans what Cal-Scale and PSC do for steam fans--just about anything you want.

Well, Remington just walked across the keyboard and is staring at me, so I guess it's feeding time at the zoo.  Spooky is sitting on the floor staring up at me also, so I'd better open the tuna for Their Nibs.

Have a great day, everyone.  Best to all and prayers to those in need.

AHAH!  I see lunch is on me.  Order up, guys.  I'll have a BLT on toasted Sourdough, Flo.  Oh yah, and some of that German potato salad.  You know, the stuff with the bacon and pickles.Tongue

On the subject of the fence, I'm kinda hung up on whether to use the white fence that's currently around the park (don't think that would look right) or whether to scratchbuild a metal fence like the one around the loco in the park.

Went to Lowe's this morning and picked up some items. A 15' foot length of water hose to cut up and use for water line patches, some stainless steel hose clamps, a small roll of aluminum screen to cut up for fencing, a couple of cans of 'Great Stuff' foam sealant to fill some gaps in the walls and baseboard, one can of 'Great Stuff' for windows and doors and some accessory bits for my Dremel, EZ-Lock mandrel, Rip/Crosscut blade, a multipurpose bit and a new diamond wheel. My old diamond wheel finally broke after 5 years of service.

Ray, what you want to look for at your LHS (or on the Walthers site) is these two:

628-30   Rix 30' & 40' poles (36 in a package) (About $5)

628-35   Rix Clear Green Cross Arms (36) (About $5)

They'll make the usual, single-post poles; for the double post kind that are found at (sub-)transformers, you may need to either glue a couple of the cross arms end-to-end, or else use strip styrene to make your own. (But you'd like that anyway, right? Wink). Hope that helps ya!

It's looking nice outside in Cape G. today, so long as you're out of the wind. But the wind has an edge to it today, for sure.

Zoe, I'll have that Great Northern Salmon, and the scrumptuous Northern Pacific strawberry dessert that Ryan has on the menu today, please. Thanks!

(Settling back for a nice, leisurely lunch, to be followed by a nice afternoon Zzz...)

Blessings and a nice nap today for you (after work, if necessary),

Tonight (Thurs), I'm going to winterjam ($10 at the door concert over in Augusta. Going to have hawk nelson and Tobymac there, among others).

Tomorrow (fri), our youthgroup is going bowling and out to eat, lol.

I just got home from work---driving N of London is not fun---they're just getting hammered with snowsqualls, expecting up to a foot in some areas---so had to pick my way home. I'll have a ribeye steak, mashed 'taters and corn on the cob as well as a coffee please and thankyou.

JIM; My going to LHS netted me some more HUMBROL paints, and some more scratchbuilding supplies PLUS about 8 40' Boxcars ( 1/2 price off!!---and reason? ---has to find some way of encouraging people to come to the store in this COLD!! Besides---he's going 'stirbats' with no one to talk to---WhistlingLaugh) See what you made me do?

I've been using rounded toothpicks for my poles--mind, mine are very light duty, not those ones that carry 4 or more lines, these carry only 2---because I'm modelling a mainly rural line the powerlines here aren't too complicated, hence these single pole with 2 insulators attached to a wedge stuck to the poles----Audrey uses in her weaving a very thin cotton thread that actually is not at all furry and is quite strong--thank goodness, what with 'Spring' around so I've been sort of checking out how this will work for powerlines---

In the meantime I'm going by the fireplace to warm up----Smile,Wink, & Grin

Thanks for the recommendations for Details West, I'll probably check into them later tonight.  Well, here comes the cold weather for us!  Low expected to be down around 16 tonight, or possibly colder.  Windchills will definitely make it seem worse (glad I've got my -20 rated parka).  I'll be back later to check up on things, and prayers to those in need.

Well, except maybe for you guys NOTB, we gotta be in first place for cold here in NW. Wisconsin. Woke up to -24f with windchills-38f to -48f.There's not a school open in the 5 county area.Tonight's guesses are: -26f and HORRIBLY cold WC's.My furnace sounds just like a cash register.I never quite had the dough to finish the woodstove install, it's an antique Channon-Emory I got off a farmhouse remodel job I did this fall.Owners were gonna toss it and I picked it up for $25. The wife googled it and found out it's worth around $900! Fits right in with our farm-type house I'm building here.Chimney triple wall is about $100 per 3' and I'll need about 18' to clear the roof highpoint(2' higher than the nearest point within  10'. Code.) With a 10/12 pitch roof that's a little spendy!

Ryan, sorry to hear your news.

I'll second Envirotex Lite for water courses. It's all I'll use.No smell and dries rock-hard. Clean it with a Swiffer pad.

Evenin' all!

Zoe I'll have the meatloaf special, baked potato, and corn, along with a big mug of hot choclate this evening.  I know it's a lot but gotta keep the fires burning with this cold snap.

Dick it will be a Three Dog Night here in the Finger Lakes tonight!  Currently 3°F (thats - 16°C) with a predicted low of -1°F.  I wouldn't be surprised to see some local school closings tomorrow as the wind will pick up and cause -15 to -20° wind chills.  Just loaded the wood stove again.  I have already used up most of my wood supply alredy and have enough to go about 3 more weeks.  Then I'll just have to turn up the furnace I guess.

Ryan, sorry to hear about your father.  The only good thing may be that that type of cancer in older men tends to be very slow growing and they have made great progress in treatment.  Most common I hear is "wait and see".  That said you and your family will be in my prayers!

Well, dinner has arrived so I will be sitting in the window booth up front in case a train goes by.
