I'm one of the most famous monsters of all time.

We were painted in a rainbow of colors through history.

I'm a massive, eastern mainline passenger locomotive.

My career spanded over 30 years.

What am I?

Has to be a Pennsy GG-1

(or at least the clues fit!)

I didn't know that Pennsy wasn't the only railroad with GG-1s. Which other railroads had those monsters?

Penn Central, Amtrak, and Conrail owned some. But I was refering to all the different schemes they came in.

Everybody thinks of me as a minor player, a minority passenger unit, but I predicted the style of the greatly admired "no 2" unit, and was in service before them! I don't even have an established "model number", however!

Nobody has tried to answer this question!

It's not that hard! We've even started putting diesel and electric units on the steam quiz!

Try a unit with an introduction date of 1945!

As we (former) Rugby players say, Good Try but No Conversion!

Something that looked a lot like a PA! (as much as any purely passenger unit did!)

Well Done!

Yes, A Fairbanks Morse "Erie Built" 2000HP Passenger Locomotive!

Because the PA-1 sold more (but not that much more), and because of the better styling, people forget that the Erie Built arrived the previous year. Sadly, despite having an engine that had powered the great majority of USN Fleet Submarines, it wasn't as reliable as needed for railroad use. (The Proto1000 model works well, however!)

OK, someone else's turn - I thought that one was dead easy!

This should be easy.

I'm one of the weirdest lookin' GE units.
Only a handful of us were built.
I'm an old-school passenger diesel built for a major Western line.
I'm unique to my line.

A U30CG, built for the Santa Fe for passenger service.

It looks a lot like an F45.

Here's an easy one: [:D]

I was a unique passenger diesel in the 1970s, but my sleek body styling resembled one of the last passenger locomotives used on the Santa Fe. My big chassis was basically old school. Only a few were built but we ran well into the 80s. One of the passenger trains I pulled was VERY LONG. [;)]

Don't insult me; I'm not an EMD! [:p]
I worked hard but as far as popularity among railfans and even the magazines, I was not mentioned very often! What am I?

Antonio,

Must be a pooch (sorry, GE P30CH)

I liked them, and got some shots in Chicago and in New Orleans

Here's one:

I'm a big diesel bought by a famous road.
I was basically a prototype for my successor, of which my home road bought 20 or so of.
I was made by EMD and was the first EMD diesel of my design.

What am I?

Okay.

I am a demonstrator for a line of locomotives that was never produced. I have a carbody, and a turret style cab for visibility in both directions, as I was built as a road switcher. I served for twenty years on the same railroad in the South, near where I was built, before I was traded in to a different locomotive manufacturer. Who am I?

OK,

I can't remember the model number, but the loco was built by Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula.

I'm pretty sure it worked for the GM&O all its life.

What was that, ten minutes? And I went through a book to find something obscure to make people think awhile. ;) Maybe I should have found some obscure facts about a common engine instead.

Yeah, they called it their "4S", and it was a 1500 HP road switcher built in 1945 as a demonstrator for a whole line of engines they had a catalog for, but it never got off of the ground. It couldn't have been too bad if it ran for twenty years before it was traded in to EMD.

'Kay Peter, you're up!
