Just stopped by to see who is still in the Diner, Duke is in the corner reading his Bike catalog, and Fergie is sipping a coffee and checking out his Vermont travel book.

JOHN: Have you considered Balsa wood? You could easily scribe that down to the scale size you need, or you could get some popsicle sticks and do the same. I have a whole box of popsicle sticks that I have saved from all the low fat ice cream chocolate covered things that the wife likes.

J.R. : That is really maddening!!! I suppose it was the Insurance company that recommended the contractor right? They get some low-ball , "D" student in carpentry and figure most people can't tell when the wall is 2" higher, or that they are getting a sub-standard job. Time to raise h** J.R. , there is no excuse for this!!

JERRY: It is indeed a cold night tonight, it is down to 42F here already, so I am sure that by 6am it will be in the mid 30's. By next week the frost will be on the pumpkin.

PAUL: That is not good news, how did the CFO take it? If you need help now spreading the crap, how about asking the people in Washington ( D.C. that is ) to come down and help out, there're real good at it these days.

Time for bed, see you guys at breakfast,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Although a long way off still, wondering what you all think. I plan on using track lighting so time & angle of daylight can be altered, or particular scenes spot-lighted. What I am wondering is, how about painting the ceiling black? The walls will be pale blue (closest to the horizon/layout), then transition to a richer colored blue with clouds (as it raises towards the ceiling).  Do you think with black, "night lighting" might be easier? Or, might this be somehow annoying for viewers? Ceiling is over 9' high, perhaps closer to 10' (will need to measure it, as I forget my own plan). Any thoughts?

Good morning.

It's 62 and clear. The high is expected to be in the mid 80's and it'll be clear with plenty of sunshine.

I made the decision yesterday on the upgrade of my DCC system. Today I'm ordering a Digitrax DCS50 and having it sent overnight mail. The Bachmann system will be going into mothballs should it be needed again. Speaking of which, I have a brand new Bachmann EZ-Command system that's still in it original plastic packaging. It's the transformer, controller, documentation and DVD. Anybody need one? I'll also be stripping the decoders from a couple of Bachmann locos today. I have a couple of Athearn locos waiting for cheap decoders.

Today's Weather for:
Sundown, LA  71446-6114      10/3/2008

Good morning!

FROST WARNING FOR INLAND AREAS TONIGHT

Today: Showers, mainly before 1pm. High near 55. Breezy, with a northwest wind between 11 and 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47. West wind between 5 and 9 mph.

Der, visit a craft store that has a DIY dried floral department, some of the wire they use to support the arrangements might work and save you some $.  They normally have hobby wood far cheaper than the LHS.

Jeff, what prompted your decision to upgrade DCC systems?

Saturday and Sunday is the NMRA DIV 4 Tran show & swap meet in Berea (Cuyahoga County Fair Grounds) doors open at 10 am if anyone is interested.

Mitch, if you're going drop me an email and I'll buy you a cup of coffee.

I need 2x 50 scale feet of rod material.  Evergreen's # 222 is just right, but I don't have any. We are going to the city on Wednesday, so I can get some when I take my Kato RDC to the LHS to have its decoder fixed. However, that's $3.75  + tax, and for far more than I need right now. Toothpicks are just too short, but the right diameter. I could wrap each end in paper glued to the wood, cut the lengths I need, and ModPodge the result when they're installed, for zero outlay; but leaving a sleeve on each end that the prototype photos don't show...What to do, what to do?....

Well John I'm thinking...

Bamboo Scewers from Sobeys

Extra Long Q-tips with wood shafts from the Drug Store

There's a Craft Store in Woodlawn that sells alot of interesting stuff along those lines...

What about home hardware. They sell some interesting stuff I wood imagine, does it have to be wood?

Terry: My thoughts are with you as I can well imagine how frustrated you must be. I'm sure once the treatments are over things will get much better. So please take care!

Cape Jim: That was yesterday... Today is sunny and very fall like so I have to get into the garden and thin it as I have been saying this for the last two years now!

Dick: Yes we have had our share of rain and then some! So I'd best get the gardening tended to as We are headed for Toronto in a week's time. As for the Spline, yes I am working on the math before I start laying as I want to make this section perfect as well as functional. The challenge is I have 4 tracks merging from three levels so clearances and grades are critical. As for the wire through the 1/2"  it's not neccesary as I have plenty of space and don't want to bury something in case I have to go a rout'. Heres the beauty of the hole concept! The pipe spacing is that of the crew mounts on a Tortoise switch machine!Big Smile [:D]

Anyway not much on the go here as the  weather is excellent and I have some thinning to do in the garden.

It's something I've been thinking about for the last year or so. I've taken my Bachmann system as far as it can go. I'd like to have the capability to program CV's. I've been playing around with a Zephyr one of my friends uses to control his yard but I've only done little things with it.

How to wash a toilet

This was simply too much of a time saver not to share it with you.

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

 2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

 3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times This provides a 'power-wash' and rinse'.

 6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

 7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

 8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Yours Sincerely,
 The Dog

Just read all those kind comments and suggestions about the rod material.  While I was typing that post last night I was actually describing the blow-by-blow construction I was doing, getting the solution installed and avoiding any $s at all.

Thanks for the tips. I actually used a smoother-sided-than-bamboo wood cooking skewer for another part of the structure, Fergie. It doesn't haveto be wood, I'd prefer plastic or metal, since the wood has to be ModPodged to hide the grain. It's a matter of using what's on hand.  Maybe this afternoon I can get the cable house worked out and built. TTFN

in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

Any thoughts on painting train room walls starting from pale blue, then transitioning into black for the ceiling? Might make for easier night lighting, spot-lighting of scenes, but not sure overall if it would look alright? Ceiling is well over 9'. Thanks for any suggestions.

Have a good day, all.

Morning, all:

Well, we're actually going to get RAIN out here in SunnyCal today and tomorrow!  Wow, forgot what the stuff LOOKS like, after 2 years of drought and a summer of burning up half the state.  The storm's supposed to move in this afternoon and they're promising about an inch here in the valley, 2 to 3 in the foothills, and maybe up to about 8 inches of snow in the higher mountains.  Now I know an inch of rain doesn't sound like much to a lot of you, but for us out here, it's going to be a God-send.  Hope this is a harbinger of Things To Come this winter.

Well, had a setback in the recuperation--seems all the antibiotics they pumped into me to tackle my Staph infection turned around and gave me a pretty violent reaction.  Lets just say that I was living in the bathroom for a while.  And on top of that, I got a HUGE case of Hives, which meant about four days with no sleep at all.  The Doctor took me off ALL the antibiotic medication, but it still took about four days to get it all out of my system.  Had a blood-test, and my white count is normal, so the Staph is completely gone.  But man, what a KILLER of a cure!  Oddly enough, the knee-which was what this whole thing was about to begin with--feels better than it has in about 20 years.  Still doesn't look too pretty, though.  Hives are gone, and I got the first good nights sleep I've had in a while, last night.

Lowell's doing pretty well, still eating me out of Gerbers five times a day.   Unfortunately, I've neglected Spooky during all of this, and being the Maine Coon that she is, she's decided to get her Winter Mats early.  So far I've combed enough out of her to build another two cats.  She looks better, but still kind of like a four-legged dust-mop.

Have to move the patio furniture padding into the garage this afternoon before the rain, which also means moving the new cat--Gizmo--in with it.  I think she'll be okay in the garage, since she doesn't like to climb on things higher than two feet.  She's a real 'ground' cat.  She's adopted the outdoor couch padding, so that'll be her garage bed.  Just hope she's not another caboose-thief, LOL!

Der:  That toilet-cleaning joke was HILARIOUS!  Especially the tag: "Sincerely, the Dog."  That one is definitely a KEEPER!

Terry:  Just hang in there, buddy.  Keep it slow and steady, and it'll all come back.  Think "Cheeseburger."  Always gets me going, LOL!

Jeff:  Really LIKE that photo of the gravel crossings.  Also like your idea of turning the AC into a building.  Actually, it's never bothered me in your photos, because it's always reminded me of some of the buildings I see in Anaheim, every time I go to Southern California.  In fact, it looks a lot like the Anaheim Convention Center.

Well, time to take Lowell to the vet for his daily injection.  And maybe--JUST MAYBE--spend some time in the garage on the layout, today.  Tomorrow's St. Francis Day, and also the 100th anniversary of the building of St. Francis Parish, and we're having a HUGE Mass with the Bishop, plus Blessing of the Animals (you bet Lowell's going to be there!) and a big reception after.  I'm playing the Mass, and we've got all of the choirs together for this one, over 100 singers.  So it's going to be a BIGGIE!  Really looking forward to it.

Take care, everyone.  Blessings to all and prayers for those in need.

Hello...

Hey Der John.... by chance, do you need a toilet plunger after conducting the proceedure you described?

JR ...Sorry to hear about your reconstruction problems. It's hard to understand poor workmanship. You'd think people would take enough car to see they don't loose there job.

Tom W ..... Sorry to learn of the side-effects bottom effects of your meds. Hope you feel better soon.

Rob ... You wanted train room suggestions. My train room has pale blue paint on drywall, but I have a backdrop blocking the view of much of the wall. Enjoy the in-laws!

Jeff ... I will be interested in how your new DCC equipment is working. I'm still thinking of converting, but it will be a while if I do.

I'm holding down the fort today doing "honey-do's". Shelley and a church lady are visiting our cancer patient friend in hospital in Nashville, TN.

I've been using a Bachmann system for the last couple of years. I've been thinking about upgrading for about a year now. I was torn between the Zephyr and the Prodigy. Since one of my  friends has been letting me practice on his Zephyr a little I decided to go with Digitrax. I just had to wait for the money to be in place so I could get it.

Ahhh Yes I know this joke all too well...Disapprove [V]

You see when I worked in the office several years ago, one of my co-workers was an "avid" catlover, where I was a dog lover. So one day I got this joke by e-mail and of course sent it through to her at the end of the day. Of course, as luck would have it, when I went to her desk the next day to "rub" salt in wounds she wasn't there... She took the day off because she had to put her cat down the night beforeShock [:O] And I couldn't retract the email before she read itBanged Head [banghead] Funny how life can beWhistling [:-^]

She took it well ... Thank God! Boy did I feel rotten over that one.

 Good Afternoon,all!

Just got back from having a late breakfast at another place with my family, (sorry Zoe Chiole Flo and Janie and Laurel,) I still love the food here, espcially when Ryan has his famous gumbo cookin', anyway I hope to find out if I won the garage makeover contest soon, that would be so awsome!!!!! the weather here is well umm er, I thought I saw Noah buiiding an ark next door, in other words, it's raining cats and dogs!!!!  we have company from out of town this weekend, so I might not get to do some MRR work, but then again I might sneak in some time, like I said awhile ago,"it's not the gettin' time it's makin'time!" Jeff I use the Zepher, and it's cool by me, I'a still lerning some of the features it has, and I'm QUITE satisfied with it!

Take care all, I'll talk to ya later tonight-trainsrme1

Well found out more today but first the great news! They will come to my house and drive me to Augusta, GA. They have gotten me a motel room at the Quality INN in Augusta. There is transportation aranged for me to be at the V.A. by 6:30 the next morning. Then when all is done in Augusta, GA. they will drive me back to Colunbia, S.C. to my house and drop me off.

I'm going down for a heart cath but while I'm there there going to try and check my difrilator out and if they deem it necasary there going to change out the one lead that is on recall by the company.

Ran my trains again tonight no wrecks, I still have to get it to a acuall layout not just a big loop on the floor.Sad [:(]

Okay first things first the ride there and back got dropped and had to drive my self but I still got motel room for free. They ended up keeping me overnight basicly because they wouldn't let me drive home as didn't want me driving for 24 hours.

Now for the part that gets interesting if we go back about 3 coffee shops and dig up where I went in the hospital because I went into Lower Dibrilation we'll come up with the statement that "the doc did a heart cath on me and found a small blockage where an artery conects to a main artery and couldn't put a stent in because of where it was as it wouldn't hold that close to the joint" Well heres the real interesting part the heart cath I had done yesterday showed that my arteries were clear no build up at all. Blockage doesn't desolve with or without medication only way is for them to operate and remove it.

I've been taking medication for about 2 1/2 years that probally didn't need and I probally also didn't need the defirilator as I found out that my papatations and probally my lower defibralation was brought on by all the caffine I was drinking/eating. prior to all this which was never brought up od asked how much I was drinking or eating until I moved and saw the cardiolgist in Knoxville, TN although I had stop drinking cokes as trying to loose weight and the amount of sugar in them in fact I stop drinking sodas completely at that point.

I have an appointment with my new cardiolgist on the 3rd of November. Then I'll find a lot out.

RT - that's great news. You may not have gotten the ride to and from, but if I read what you related correctly, you may just be getting the proverbial new lease on life. Our hopes and prayers for you.   J.R.

Hey, PC - wanna treat me to a brownie a la mode, and a cup of coffee? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Okay, thanks, Ryan - I see you're covering for PC this afternoon/evening. Dinner [dinner]

C&O Terry, don't overdo - get your rest as you're healing up. Thumbs Up [tup]

Jeff, I like that Ezra's 'doghouse' trailer. Might just get one of those sets next time I'm by WallyLand. Or, I think maybe that Model Power may still carry a set with a trailer like that one. And do let us know your thoughts once you get the Digitrax system in and installed and test it out.

Dick, will the state's RR there have reporting marks for their cars? That doesn't sound like your average arrangement when trying to get passenger service, but then again, there may not be that many states that are doing that, either. Oh, I guess if you hadn't have finished up the window work, you would have had (ahem...) 'frosted (oak) flakes'??? (Grrrrreaaaat!! Whistling [:-^])

Rob and Paul, my ex-FIL (now gone home) always used to work on repairing his machinery for his farm during the winter months. I think the only 'cheap' farm equipment is the stuff you've already paid for and have had for several years, from what I had heard. 'bout right?

Rob, I don't know what to suggest on your walls/ceiling, as I've never seen a layout where they used black for either. Saw somewhere one time where someone had holes in the backdrop (minimized visibly by painting, and for 'night' the main lights were dimmed/off, and lights behind the backdrop made it look like stars in the sky. Maybe someone else has seen or tried that, and will have suggestions for you.

DerJohn - Laugh [(-D] I sent that one to a cat-loving friend from church. Now, if I don't ever post again, you'll know that Rae did me in...Shock [:O]Oops [oops] Good to hear that you got your wood rods thing figured out.

Tom, your doctor sure knows the HARD way to get you rid of an illness, doesn't he/she? Congrats on getting some rain (finally), and I hope the hills and mountains don't wind up in your backyard as a mudslide... On Gizmo, just watch out for Spooky and Lowell whispering to her when your back is turned, giving her all their tips on cabeese-stealing.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Are you going to have travelling cages for your cats (and Gizmo?), or are they well-behaved enough while you're playing?

JR, if your insurance company got the last contractor, I'd be speaking up (rather loudly) about my thoughts on any contractor for the real work. Yeah!! [yeah] That's kind of $#%^& - can someone go after the contractor for shoddy workmanship and failing to complete the job in a timely (and even halfway-decent) manner?

RT, kinda great that your body got itself healed (and/or the doctors before messed up on their diagnosis, not that that ever happens with doctors, right folks? Whistling [:-^]). Did (or will) the doctor be un-installing the defibrilator, with all of this new discovery? That'd be even better. Yeah!! [yeah] Sure would simplify your life in a lot of ways!

Well, I need to get heading for home. Want to see a couple of TV shows (one new show, one new season). Everybody take care of yourselves, and Tom, TrainsRMe1 and our other Northwesterners, watch out for the rain flow around your places! Shock [:O] Prayers and best wishes for healing for those who're ailing or recovering.

Blessings and healing prayers for all of ya,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening Gang: I spent the day over at the train meet. I didn't do any running but spent the day on my tractor with the grapple. Terry's hired hands made a trash pile right where the entire world could see it. I spent about an hour moving it to the dump site. After that Terry asked me to clean up the old ballast pile so that area could be mowed. I used the ballast for a gravel road to the dump. The ballast was too full of dirt and grass to use on the railroad. Tomorrow I'll be able to get in some running. I'm leaving the tractor at home.

RT that's great news even if you were put through a bunch of trouble over the year. For that kind of news I'd have driven myself too.

Jeff you keep on doing some great work. I like Ezra's trailer too.

Well I need to hit the showers. There was a bunch of rag weed out there.

Good Night All

Hello Diners!  An Earl Grey tea, and a slice of Wasa crispbread with quince jam, Zoe, if you would be so kind.

Ryan: Most of what you need to know about Cassia is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinnamomum_aromaticum , the lead paragraph of which is:-

Cassia (Cinnamomum aromaticum, synonym C. cassia) is an evergreen tree native to southern China, Bangladesh, India, and Vietnam. Like its close relative, cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, also known as "true cinnamon" or "Ceylon cinnamon"), it is used primarily for its aromatic bark, which is used as a spice, often under the culinary name of "cinnamon". The buds are also used as a spice, especially in India, and were once used by the ancient Romans.

It's the buds we use, buy them dried and grind them up. More on the similarity of Cassia to Cinnamon at http://www.uni-graz.at/~katzer/engl/Cinn_cas.html  I found the time to find out while waiting for the glue to dry on some railing uprights for the catwalk that hangs beneath the cable house for the container crane. I've worked out how to model it, and am about half way through.

Rob:  My experience is that layouts eat light. I'd not be thinking about a black ceiling as that would absorb much of what you really want bounced down onto the layout.  Darker blue at the top of the walls, shading down to pale blue/white at the bottom seems to be the way most folks go for general sky, and the ceiling is left white. Anywho, that's my My 2 cents [2c]

RT: That's great news, and I'm reading things the same way as JR. A real cause for thanksgiving (which for us is when you have your Columbus Day).

Bed time yet again. I'm leaving the railings and suspension uprights to set overnight. I hope they set straight! I can't put on the horizontals and attach the cable house until everything is firmed up. Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]
