Jeff & Fergi, thanks I'll try a new spring or some weights on those pilots.  The challenger is a Rivarossi and the Northern is a Bachman.  I'm going to LHS today and look into those 50' tenders those look very impressive going around the layout.

Since you guys are on a roll; I have a few used #4 turnouts in my yard.  They have the points that are riveted to the traveling bar that operates the turnout.  The rivets are a little loose and cause rolling stock to pick the switch.  How can I glue those points in place without gluing the whole darn thing to the layout?

Could be a couple of issues

1. Check your wheel spacing with an NMRA guage

2. Is your Locos balanced Locos should be balanced right dab centre (Midships)

3. How much play and down thrust spring is in your Pilot Wheels? Some wheels have no spring and stay on the track under their own weight. To do that the have to have ample play and bounce ability. If they are spring loaded the spring should be forcing them down with some umph but still allowing for lateral play with little if any resistance.

Hope this helps... Are they Bachmann's?

Is it possible that there's not enough weight on the pilot truck? Placing some lead weight on the top of the truck may work or placing a spring between the loco body and the truck may work.

Good morning.

It's 74 and clear. The high today will be in the mid 90's and it will be mostly cloudy. There's a small chance for rain this afternoon.

Yesterday was dominated by work on the layout. Some scenery here, a repair there, that sort of thing. One thing that had to be addressed was a SPST toggle switch that was in a bad location. If I had to lean across the layout there was a good chance the switch would be broken, and several times it was. I replaced it with a half inch diameter push-on/push-off switch which seems to be working out rather well. It's purpose is to turn track #2 in the maintenance shop on and off.

Here is the view at this very moment from our property to the boat dock on the other side of our bay.

A person has drowned. Police, the coronor, an ambulance, and a hearst are telling are indicatrions of a tragic story.

It is time to remember the importance of water safety.

If our resident lifeguard (me) had been there when the person was in the act of drowning they wouldn't have died.

Evening all -

Just got back in from dinner. It was good food and fun times.

JimCG - the Soo Engine was in the switching yard as was hooked to a CSX Engine that was doing some yard shuffling.

Galaxy - Being in Binghamton, you get to see more than NS. CP and NYS&W go thru there as well, don't they?

Take care!

Evening Gang:The weather here is still hot with a capital HOT. It's also dry. I think that we're in worse shape now then a couple of years ago as far as grass is concerned. I noticed that the weeds are dying from lack of water. Would you believe that the grass burs haven't come out? There is some rain coming tonight. There is a TS supposed to be here in about an hour or so. I'll take any rain even from a TS. Tomorrow I'll have to put out hay again. There just isn't alot of grass.

Lee I see the the Toledo light was vandalised. I hope that they can catch the jerks.

Evening all,

We had a good turnout today for running the railroad.  Dale, Alex, and J stopped over for 7 hours.  Dale finished building the Northern Light and power and 2 dock cranes for the layout.  Alex worked in the yard and found a few problems with some of the turnouts.  Dale scored big on the bay last week with a Bachman HO-Scale northern with a 50ft tender for under $30, new in the box.  I actually got a few things done; the mallet and the challenger will haul up to 30 hoppers each.  That's not too bad.  I'm working on laying more tracks in the yard and locomotive shops.  Hopefully by this weekend I'll have the cab track and RIP track installed.

We had thunder and lightning all around us this morning, but no rain.

Jeff, that magic jack sounds cool.

Well, rats, Jeff - When I went to their website, they indicate it's only for Intel-based Macs - the newest ones... (which would mean I'd have to buy a new computer to go with the jack...) Sigh [sigh]

You're using an older MAC I presume. I see there in the FAQ's where they say 'Intel based' MAC's. Too bad. If you had a pc running XP or Vista there wouldn't be any problem.

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a salad (with some grape tomatoes, if Galaxy's plant will let you take 'em...),

some beef stew,

and a chocolate chip yogurt concrete, please.

(that'll be my beverage and my dessert Smile [:)]) - Thanks!

Rob, got your PMs and have sent an email off to check on that. Thumbs Up [tup]

Terry, your station is coming along very nicely! I look forward to seeing the rest of this project. Yeah!! [yeah]

Fergie, I like your mugs - are those two different sizes, or is one of them sitting on something? Thanks for the link, by the way. Thumbs Up [tup]

Aw, Galaxy - go ahead with the garden RR. I'm sure the Franken-Tomato would like some iron for its diet...Whistling [:-^]Wink [;)] That is one crazy tomato plant! Are the tomatoes going to be just the size of grapes? I'm sure Rosie the cook can make some fine pasta selections, and Ryan probably can give Rosie a few recipes to use up more of those 'maters, too.

Oh, this morning I (amazingly enough) won a DVD RW drive (Panasonic UJ-850) on the Bay, for only $21.50 with shipping. Yeah!! [yeah] I'm going to put it in a drive bay housing for my laptop, and use it for data backups, mostly, plus viewing DVD's and listening to CDs as well. I was amazed that the drives were listing for so little on the Bay - it was around $5 (plus $10 shipping) when I found it, with about 7 minutes to go on that auction.

Duke - those Northlandz bridges are fantastic! Wow!! [wow] So, now that you know those eyelids don't leak, does that mean you're going to stop checking them? Wink [;)] And since I'll be on vacation for the next week, I may join you on the other side of that booth...Zzz [zzz]

TrainsRMe1, your weather makes a good case for finding one of those big blocks of ice - and parking yourself on it for the day! Sheesh! How many days like that have you had in a row so far? Thank Heaven your humidity is low - particularly since it's 93 F out there now (only 28 percent, at least). Just do like they did in the Phoenix area a few years back when I visited out there - don't touch any metal until well after sundown.

Jeff, that's really nice on your phone - wonder if I could talk Charter into only connecting up my broadband and getting one of those phones? Hmmm....

JP, good to see you're still keeping up with some railfanning. Nice pics - I was trying to figure out if that Soo Line diesel in the yard was being worked on, or torn down. Have a good dinner tonight with your sweetie. Smile [:)]

Ah, back to my dinner, and figuring how much (or little) I want to get done this next week...

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good evening, of course we had yet another TS today, we are pushing towards a record for August. Making good progress on the re-building of the front of the former garage- under doorway. I ran into a kingsize problem with the siding of all things. Our house was built in 1967/68, and at that time and for 20 years thereafter, Insulite ( Hardboard ) was the main siding material used. However, no one is carrying it anymore, at least not up here in our neck of the woods. It is 8" wide, 7" to the weather, and 3/8" thick. So believe it or not, the cheapest way to solve this problem was to have a lumber yard plane down 1X10 pine boards to 3/8" thick. Cedar was too darn expensive. I couldn't believe it!!! I can't get stupid siding !!!!!!

Afternoon all

Rob

do you have any photos of some larger bridges to share
Maybe this next set will do the trick, but the pics don't give them justice as to their size.

Lee

That was an impressive layout, was that your basement?
Oh,don't I wish. Tongue [:P]They are all from Northlandz in New Jersy.

seafood gumbo or a chicken gumbo?
For me it would be the chicken as I am not much for sea food.

Garry That's a shame about the drowning and it seems that around here with all the inland lakes we hear about 2-3 a month and most of them for lack of water safety.

Ok here are some more bridges upon Rob's request and after looking at some of the pics,I need to play with this digital camera more.

Afternoon / Evening Gang!

Hope all is well with everyone. Prayers to those in need of them.

Not much to report here. Still house hunting. Saw a few Tuesday afternoon and going to see a bunch tomorrow afternoon.

Today was a slow paced day - store for quarters so I can do laundry, dd for coffee, atm for cash (we're going out to dinner tonight w/ a bunch of my co-workers) and then haircut. After that, a drive by the CSX yard to the main entrance showed me this...

My next stop was back at the east end of the yard to the pedestrian footbridge over the tracks where I got these from -

  Hope you all enjoy them!

Take care!

Hi guys (and gals who frequent such places as this!)

I'm having meatloaf tonight. My own speciality du maison.

To those who refered to what I call "franken-mato".....

The tomato plant has just taken over the front of the house. It is scale 1:1 and as big as half a 40' boxcar! that wide and deep and  6' high. And it is still growing. I will have thosands of yield. I may have to learn how to can them! Sometimes I have a green thumb, but this "franken-mato"....

TOPIC RELATED is that I was going to try a garden train out there....but I couldn't run it now if I tried....

Maybe sometime I can get a pic of it on here!

I'll ask Rosie in the kitchen here if she wants some....

g'day mates, later boys...

Right here. Magicjack. You need a broadband connection to use it, i.e. broadband, cable internet, DSL, Wi-Fi, WiMax or FIOS.

Jeff when you say a regular corded phone, is that an analog or digital phone? When we used to test fax lines which are still analog we had to use an old regular phone, that's the only reason I ask. I bet PC knows about that!

Digital or analog, it doesn't matter. As long as it has a cord to plug into the jack. As far as I know, cordless phones will also work with it as the base station is corded. The phone I'm using right know is a 25 year old Conairphone that I found in the junk room at my parents house yesterday. It's a handheld touchtone rig that makes me sound like I'm talking through a long pipe.

Well that is good to know! Thanks Jeff! So where do you get this USB device?

in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thank you!

***Fergie, I can see having a couple of those mugs made for gifts. If I could find a real good pic of "The General" (or snap one of it in the museum when nobody is around), that would make a perfect mug for the wife. Thanks for the link.

***Inch, great pics. There is an old similar steam tractor under someones carport that has been there for years, (along with a few of cars). Would love to have something like that, especially restored and running. Very cool!

***Jim, check your PMs. Thanks!

Morning, Zoe, Jeff, Ryan, Inch. Okay, I won't get too loud and wake Duke. Yeah, he's (heh, heh...) 'checking his eyelids for leaks' - yeah, right! Laugh [(-D]

Sorry I've not been making it in much lately. I may have to break down and call Charter today about getting hooked up for phone and broadband; this going to WiFi places is adding up, at their rates even for a soda. Shock [:O] Besides, sometimes (like last night) I'm at home and think of something I'd like to look up online, but don't want to get in the car and head over to a place (if they're still open).

Last night (while I was at a WiFi place) I ordered some freight cars from Dallas Model Works (an Accuaril boxcar - NH, and a P2K NYC 50' boxcar, plus some buildings parts - fire escape, roundhouse doors). They are having a members' special on Intermountain freight cars through the weekend, but all the ones I saw were either not HO scale, or else were too modern for my RR's era (transition). The owner (? - Craig) emailed me back and offered me the same coupon deal if I found some other freight cars I liked. I've been thinking that I need some of the major RR's, including a few of the bigger eastern RR's like NYC and NH. Didn't see any B&M, though, Dick. Sad [:(] Maybe I'll find those later...

Hope it cools down out your way, TrainsRMe1 - you've been having weather almost as bad as BridgeTom had earlier this summer (just without as much smoke). Our weather here has been fairly good lately (60's overnight, and only mid-80's in the days, with low humidity). I think they're talking rain for the weekend, but that's okay - I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow morning! Yeah!! [yeah]Big Smile [:D]

Garry, that's sad news about the drowning. As you and others said, can't be too careful around the water.

Don't think I mentioned in my last post, but at MRR club Monday night, couple three of the members were putting the support 'sticks' in for the backdrop between the two sides, and our architect/layout designer Kevin was laying out the rest of the mailine so we can resume putting down roadbed. Kevin had sent us some pics from his work place (he works as a car/home stero installer at a customizing shop). He found a hummingbird that had apparently got trapped in the building overnight and had cobwebs in it and was all tired out. He carefully got it outside and then put a dish of some nectar that a co-worker made up in a shallow dish and held it where the hummingbird could drink from it. After several sips from the nectar, the poor little thing got enough energy, and took off. Kind of neat!

Inch, sorry to hear about your sad news on school. I know of a lot of parents, grandparents and other family members who let out a big 'Whooopie!!' about the first day that school starts back up. (Even if we love 'em, a whole summer can get long sometimes)

Zoe, I'll have some of the breakfast special, a glass of Ed's OJ and a glass of milk, and a cup of the TH, please. Thanks!

Time to chow down. Dinner [dinner]

Blessings and some cooler weather for those suffering in the heat,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
