Anybody got any idea what kind of loco drive this is?

It had what looked like an Atlas RSC body on it when I got it. The frame has 'Made in Japan' on it, the trucks are from China and the motor is from Austria. Does any company make something like this or is it a kit-bash from someones junk box? I got it in the mail. No indication who sent it, no return address, just a note that said I hope you have as much fun with this as I did. This drive is what I'm using in my GP35/S6.

Good evening Diners: Quite a productive day, all in all. The blackened rails are now installed on the dock, ready for the crane to be delivered. (Insider information tells me that the manufacturer hasn't even got the drawings done, let alone begun construction, so there could be a small delay!)  I began typing this while the glue dries to hold the end stops to the dock, prior to painting concrete. Photos when that's done, after dessert I suspect.

On a technical note, I see that container cranes don't run on train type rail, and the wheels are double flanged. Too bad, as all I have is the code 55 (Z?) and Z Scale wheelsets.  I'm going to have to cut those down to yield eight individual wheels for the "inline skate" type trucks the crane runs on.  I also see that the rail is mounted in a poured concrete casting.  This is fortunate, because modelling that has allowed me to cover over the slight mess (sorry Fergie) my contact cement for the rails made along the edges of the rail. I've made the casting out of strips of Evergreen Plastics .010x.188" strip, cut lengthways to give me 1 scale foot wide pieces to glue on top of the rail foot, both sides. I used super glue for that, after first painting the strips. Since I didn't seem to be capable of cutting the Evergreen strip exactly in half lengthways, I ended up with four thicker and four slightly more narrow strips.  Making a virtue of necessity, I put the narrow ones along the further of the two rails, thus giving a little forced perspective.  I followed that up by putting the two slightly thiner of the four "identical" end stops cut from blue Styrofoam on the further track also.

Time for tea and dessert.  I'll have an Earl Grey please, and a banana chopped in milk, with a sprinkle of ground Cassia, some Toasted Oat Os, and strawberries and blackberries to top it off. Thanks Zoe.

Garry: Sorry to hear about Diane.  I've put her and Wayne on our churches' National Prayer Chain. Could you let them know, by way of encouragement?

Paul:  Were you able to get that nap?  Hope you sleep better tonight, those allergies are no joke.

Rob:

Wife is taking a break from nursing to pursue writing. Will need to seriously tighten up the belt for a while, but I think it is worth her giving this a serious effort. This is not without outside/professional encouragement. She is VERY talented in this area. Wish her (& us) luck!
...We do!, and Kris says that your wife has a better chance at making a go of it in the US than she does here in Canada. The publisher of her novel has defaulted on the contract in the matter of royalties...things are in a flux at the moment, and we are waiting to see what next month, "the month of promised payments", brings. It looks as if the publisher may have been taking trips abroad at the expense of the authors. Wish us luck too!

Well, dessert was delicious, the glue's set and the paint's dry.  So here's the latest.  I've had a go at adding bumpers to the dock yesterday.  They are a bit undersize, no doubt, but what I had on hand were the plastic covers from the levers of Radio Shack switches. (The ones with the black plastic cube mechanism and contacts) I used truck bolsters for the retainers, as they fit nicely into a 5/64ths hole drilled in the dock, and thus hold the rope or chain or whatever that is.  I painted them yellow, but left the bumpers plain white. If that isn't known to marine science, then I can paint them, open to suggestions. I've seen pics of grey, blue or sickly yellow, none of which turn my crank, but I could live with blue or grey.

and a close up of the stops...

Jeff:  Considering the note, I think your guess is right, that drive's  kitbash.

Trains: Sounds like you had a great trip. I'd like to see the Jim Henson exhibit , but not enough to actually make the journey!

That's about it for me. TS Kyle later tomorrow by the sound of it, but I expect it will be quite windy and raining most of the day.  We have broken the back of the outside work, finishing up chipping a pile of rose branches and old spruce boughs that has been sitting unattended to, growing slowly for about 3 years! Now it can rain and fill up the well again.  The fish in the pond won't mind either.

Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort, and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening Gang: I left out a word in my last post. That word is frost, very important. I did go back and add it.

Der Mary Ann and I had a nice nap but still felt bad after. The kids brought us a couple of humidifiyers. We set one up in the bedroom. It has a sensor for humidity and it read 33%. No wonder our moths and throughts were so dry. It's been running for an hour or so and it feels better in here already. The morning will tell.

Well I'm going to hit the sack.

It responds with breaking now.

I have a NS SD-80, Chessie System C&O GP-30 and a NYC GP-9

I go in for my heart cath thursday and should be home thursday evening as its now a 1 day proceedure. told I'm not to drive for 3 days and no work for a week probally.

No biggy here thou as I have right at 40 hours vacation time I can use. and the way my work schedule is I will only need like 32 hours as I'm scheduled off the others only kink in the routine is if they find something and need to do surgery on me.

Good morning.

It's 64 and clear. The high is expected to be in the mid 80's and it will be partly cloudy.

Yesterday I mowed my parents yard (if you could see it you'd know what a job that is, even with their huge mower) then did a few odd jobs around the property. Afterwards my mother and I went to El Giro's restaurant in town. It's good that she's able to get around again and we want her to get out of the house some. After that I came home and worked on the layout a bit and puzzled over the mystery drive in my GP35/S6 (chop-cut-rebuild) to try and determine where the parts came from in case I need to get replacements. I'm 95% certain the frame is Kato. The motor may be Roco. It was made in Austria. The trucks are the big mystery. They look ALMOST like the trucks in my Kato RSC2 but there are differences. All I can find on them is 'China'. I'm fairly certain the flywheels are Athearn. I can't complain about it's operation. It runs smooth as silk and I certainly have no complaint about it's price (FREE).

Good afternoon folks:  Latest track of Kyle shows it heading straight for Yarmouth, not on the more westerly course predicted this morning.  So, we are in for a windy day tomorrow, with gusts up to near hurricane force, and Fergie and Luc could have a slightly worse time of it. Not too much rain here probably, but we shall see. All this info courtesy of  http://www.stormpulse.com/ (thanks Dick!)  So, I got my walk after lunch today OK, and it was a warm one, with all the Gulf air being pushed up ahead along the eastern seaboard.

Paul: 33% humidity sounds like an Alberta winter! Getting that moisture level up is a way better fix than meds, and a tad cheaper too!

RT: I like the thought of those remote operating couplers, and the back talk sounds very cool. Too bad that sound is a long way down the list for this layout!  Maybe by the time I get around to that, the technology will have advanced to where it's possible for both those features!

Trains:

I did a little work on the layout today, scenery work, tomorrow I'm going to do a little wiring,
...Photos? Enquiring minds need to know!.....Big Smile [:D]

Lee: Thanks for putting up those HO locator sites.  I browsed through and saw Revell, and a pic of an old friend from my A&W Alberta layout, the suburban station. ...so while on the Revell site, I looked some more, and solved a puzzle.  There was a  kit in Horribly Oversized for a freight building I have in Normal. From the way the main building is chopped off, I had thought it to be a kitbash, but no, there it was revealed as Revell!

John, the dock looks pretty good!
...thanks, if you aren't ROTFL, I'm happy, 'cause I'm making it up as I go along!

Tea time, after which I'm doing drawings for the container crane starting with some photos. First, I must find out what a 33" Z scale wheel is in N inches!

***Lee, those magnet rakes look cool, if they really work. Sure could have used one before I spread all that dirt. Going to plant grass and let whatever metal nails & such I missed simply rust away under ground.

***Der, the first N scale freight building I ever had was the same as that one you posted. One day I hope to replace it, for sentimental reasons.

The consensus of opinion so far on the mystery loco drive is that it may be some kind of Atlas variant.

Briefly, thanks to those who responded to my prayer request. It was appreciated by our friends. These people helped us thru the ordeal of the death of Shelley's sister last year, and they helped much when I had my problem in the middle of August.

Der ... I sent you a PM.

Jeff ... The trucks on your loco look a little like Trainamster trucks, too. Not the same though. Have fun!

More later.

Evening, Diners! Janie, just a cup to go, please.

Will write more and post tomorrow, but wanted to respond to your mention, DerJohn, about the Revell freight station. AHM, ConCor, or one of the companies in the later 'Revell lineage' (who got the dies for some of their kits) also put out an HO version of the Revell freight station, which had less of the 'kitbashed' appearance. I'm not at home to look at mine, but I think they had that little office extended longer, if I'm recalling it correctly. Hey, I have several Revell kits (or Revell lineage kits) still to be assembled - for their time, Revell was way ahead with the level of details that they cast in their walls. (Of course, they worked that 2-stall enginehouse to death, in the reincarnations of the Superior Bakery, and the Weekly Herald, but that's just my opinion. When I get to building those, I plan to kitbash a couple of those and add mods so they don't so closely resemble the enginehouse...) Whistling [:-^]Wink [;)]

Good evening, all you Diners!

Blessings and a good night's rest for all,

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please & thanks.

Here's the latest acquisition for wife's circus/carnival/train/layout:

Just need to buy more conversion couplers. Still have not come up with the right ones for a couple of the other cars. If gas ever becomes available around here again, we might make a trip out to that not-so-LHS.

Anyone else seeing gas lines and shortages where you live? It is CRAZY here in north Georgia. Only gas left is premium, with a premium price. And you are limited to 10 gallons per visit. Hope I can still drive the truck to get hay this week. Yikes!

Good night all.

Evening,

Rob, I see some of our gas stations running out of fuel, the one on the corner from me is out of everything except REGULAR.  Diesel seems unaffected for us, we have a refinery in Toledo and mass storage tanks in Cleveland, but it's all diesel production and #6 fuel Oil.   OH- and those big magnets on a string work well too, but it's good to use one over the driveway every now and then.

Speaking of older models I just bid on 2 lots of Suydam structures.  I've built these in the past but my ex-wife threw them out while the layout stuff was in storage.  They were always good kits at a good price.

Kile, I'm looking forward to your pictures.  I finally got the lumberyard building and the grain elevator ready for some detail work and legends.  I painted 4 pieces of rolling stock and did some maintenance on my MOW rolling stock.  I also sat a stared at the mess in the layout room and tried to think of ways to clean it up, LOL.

Jeff, that caboose I sent you: That is a COX model believe it or not....

Evening Gang: Mary Ann, John, and I went out and bought her a new bull for the heifers. It is an Angus and around 1400 lbs. I'm hoping that he's as good as the old one. We still have the old bull and will keep him for some time. The guy also had another bull but Mary Ann said not now. I really don't like to have one bull for 24 cows. The poor guy has to have a rest once in awhile.

The humidifier worked well. I woke up without the dry mouth and throat and no stuffed up sinices. I cranked it up tonight so am hoping for the same results.

Der when I was up in Duluth I saw that they were using tires from those very large mining trucks for bumpers along the dock walls. Just a thought. They looked neet.

RT: Let us know how things go. You know how anxcious we get around here. My prayers go with you.

Well I'm going to head for bed.

How about that. It looks real good on an Athearn frame. I used to have a Cox loco. That was back when they were made for Cox by Athearn. The first time I saw the inside of an Athearn loco I thought 'Now that looks real darned familiar'.

Rob ..... That's a neat circus car.

Gasoline shortages?  Not here.

I completed my kitbashing project. I converted a Walthers Budd baggage/dormatory car into a CB&Q baggage lounge car. I have been testing it. So far, I am happy with it.

 Hi Zoe and Laurel,

I'll take a Arnold Palmer please, Hey Kile, I did a little work on our layout yesterday, nothing today though, too tired from our trip,

I like that circus car Rob, that is real nice!!

Jerry, take care I'm real glad you ran your trains today!!

Well so far no gas shortages here in Oregon, I remember back in the early 70's we had the odd-even days, ( if your lic plate ##  ended in a odd # that was your day to get gas,) and the same for the even, I hope we don't have to go back to that.

Good morning all,

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 70. East wind between 3 and 9 mph.

Tonight: Showers likely after midnight. Increasing clouds, with a low around 57. East wind between 6 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Rob, the circus car looks real good.  I use either the Life Like Couplers (small hole) or the McHenry couples (larger hole) they both seem to work well.  On locomotives I spen the extra money to buy Kadee metal couplers.

Good morning.

It's 68 and clear. The high should be in the mid 80's and it will be partly cloudy.

Cable problems continue to plague me so I probably won't be on much today.

I've been doing research on different DCC systems and have narrowed it down to two (in terms of price). The Digitrax Zephyr ($179.98 - Walther's) and the MRC Prodigy Express ($118.54 - Amazon). I'm seeing a lot of complaints about the Zephyr about locos just suddenly stopping and about uncontrolled runaways. I certainly wouldn't want a parked loco on a siding to suddenly start up and charge into the middle of a passing freight, though Gomez Addams would probably love it. This has me leaning more toward the MRC system. The 1.6 amp power doesn't bother me. I already have a 5 amp booster that should work well with the system plus I'll only be running 4 locos at a time - max.

Just get me a orange juice for now, thanks.

As for me today and this week.  JOB HUNT.   They are having a job fair Thursday, and I will see what they have to offer.  I would like to go back to school (being just 28), I still have some time.

I am hoping to get a decent job, so I can redo the layot again.  Just take my time, and do it right.  Just do the works on it.  I know there is a train show coming n a week or to here, but I just won't have the money to go.  Plus.....last time there was ALOT of N scale.  I need HO scale.
