Hi Gang:

Lee thanks for the photos and video. The F's are hauling taconite from the ore dock at Taconite Harbor back to the plant for use there. Cliffs is going to do some nuggets and build a furnace there to use them.

Well I've got to run. It's over 100 again and I have to check the pump at the creek. I set it up around 1:20 so it should be about due for some fuel. It only had 1/2 a tank. I don't know how much good this flood irrigation will do, but it can't hurt. The pump can move 18,000 gals a hour so I should have about 30,000 gals on the field. You got to figure for the length and rise of the run will reduce the amount some.

See you all later.

Afternoon folks-I was figuring the diner was going to move soon-I figured I'd better check in before anyone thinks I died or something.

Been an interesting last few weeks-I got the promo at work, & now I work 5AM-12PM instead of 1-9PM. A little bit of a raise, but at least it's something. Granted, it's going to take awhile to get used to the schedule change (in bed by 9-up at 4) but at least I don't have to deal with the public anymore!

Lee-thanks for the F9 pics. Anytime I hear about an F unit still operating somewhere it does my heart good as they were always my favorite type of loco.

Speaking of, along with a few other projects, I've been trying to make lemonade out of some of my "lemons", namely old almost useless locos & cars I've had for years. Currently I'm working on an old Athearn BB F7B dummy I got when I was a kid. Originally a B&O unit, I eventually painted it back then (I should say slopped paint on-ugh!)

Anyways, I've dug it out, stripped it, & it's to represent a static unit sitting on a siding of my planned loco rebuilding facility on the future layout. I'm painting it to represent a unit that was supposedly a unit used on my RR in the 50's & 60's, then downgraded to MofW service. I'm finishing up painting it in an old "passenger" scheme, & then plan on painting it HVS MofW orange, with the old scheme coming thru in places. I'm also detailing it with various parts to brush up on my loco detailing skills. We'll have to see how it comes out.

Hmm-talking about that is giving me the itch to hit the workbench to see what I can do with it today for awhile.

Have a good afternoon/evening folks-I'll be back soon!

Afternoon, Flo - I'll have a ham sandwich and a root beer float, please.

Thanks! I was considerably tempted to go with some of those chili dogs that Jeff was having (I think he was - only got a brief glimpse before he wolfed down the last bite of 'em), but I forgot to bring my Tums with me...Whistling [:-^]

Jeff, I'm guessing that the plug door boxcar is the (formerly) UP one in the kit? Good job on the 'light' weathering. Thumbs Up [tup] Will the boxcar be lettered for the Midland next? Oh, and nobody asked, but we could hold the 'Welcome Home' party/picnic in your park, if the picnic pavilion isn't reserved already. You already have a suitable ball diamond there. Yeah!! [yeah]

By the way, I heard back from JP in email - said he was delayed on day, but would be heading out and be back either late Monday or early Tuesday morning. So our morning crew of Diners may be the lead contingent in the greeting party (until the rest of us get some coffee in our veins...).

Lee, that's something with the RR resurrecting the E-units for that run. Now, if we could get our government to think as clearly as that about more efficient ways to transport stuff....

[rant] ...This morning, our pastor's message (not political otherwise) was titled 'Get Going,' (something Congress isn't well-known for) and he even challenged our U.S. legislators to contact him and explain (even to just the couple of thousand people who attend here) why exactly they felt okay with doing nothing on passing an energy bill before checking out for their 'summer recess.' SoapBox [soapbox] [/rant] (a local TV carries the service in this area)

PC, hope you were able to prepare some more for your class today. I'm guessing that you were able to send the crews out to do the actual hands-on checking of the lines/equipment, right? Thanks for reminding me about who Cliff was - hadn't seen Cheers in a long while (not carrying cable and our local on-air channels don't have it in reruns - closest they carry is the Frasier show).

Good to see you in again, DerJohn - oh, and trust me from what I've heard, you do not want to see Vinnie like the second picture in DerJohn's post (especially not in the alley out back of the Diner...) Shock [:O]

Alex, what you should've done with those bills would be to just ask Vinnie to 'collect' for you. The commission he charges (I hear) isn't much, and after he calls on someone, the word gets around and everyone else starts paying up promptly.Oops [oops]

Packers#1, have fun at the beach (and don't get too sunburned). We'll see you after you get back.

And thanks, Morgan, for using your 'mobile to tow the Diner to the new location. I'm glad we're not right up on the diamonds, with how much that last Yellowstone rumbled my plate, though. Wink [;)]

Got some patching and filling in cracks in the corner joints of my Roberts building kitbash yesterday. Will hopefully this afternoon/evening get it sanded down smooth and masked off for the brick areas to be painted. But I have the DR table to clear off again. Got the vaccuuming done earlier this afternoon, at least. Smile [:)]

We had a bunch of rumbles/thunder this morning when I was in church, but no sign of rain when I went back out to the car, and no sign this afternoon. Some clouds, but nothing out of them.  85 F and 60 percent humidity currently, and they're talking temps of 97 F Monday and Tuesday (with heat indices of 100-107 F!). JP wouldn't know he wasn't in the sandbox if he came here on Monday or Tuesday(!).Shock [:O]Cool [8D]

I'll go sit at the corner booth with Tom and wait for the next Yellowstone to come by.  Prayers for CN Charlie's FIL, Rob's in-laws and all our others in need of healing.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

No Problem guys. Glad to do it. I'm feeling wiped today, so we'll keep it short.

Tom: Surely not! She;s much better lookin, better sounding, and smarter, than the one on tv. Funny what moneyu will get one to do. Least your standards are high around here. Keep our mugs full and we're happy lil campers.

GG: Long as it;s in the family, all is right with the world.

T'was up to the Indy Transportation Museum gettin' oriented today for the Fairtrain. I'm working 330-Midnight Wednesday throu Sunday. Then It;s morning shifts until the end the 17thminus the 14th and 15th for School. Ugh. It;s that time already. No pictures, I wanted to at least appear diginified today. 587's Boiler is near complete. Still need to re-assemble the pistons, and reattach the cab. Soon! By Mid next year.

Did I say Dad's in the Rehab? He is, at Heartland, on the West Side. They're working on his endurance. He can sit up for a while and walk to the bathroom. Any longer involves a walker and an assistant.

Band? Did somebody say Band?

It's been one thunderstorm after another today with lots of wind and lightning, but very little rain. We got 3/4's of an inch this morning.

Evening all,

I see everyone found their way to the new diner.

I installed 10 ground throws and 2 spotlight towers in the yard this weekend, not to mention I sorted most of my rolling stock and started a box of stuff to go to the Bay for reassignment. Nothing I would consider ‘junk" just stuff too modern for my layout.  I might go back downstairs and finish the ground throws.  I found 4 bad order turnouts in the yard, what a pain in the neck to cut those out and replace without destroying everything around them.

Mitch, the "big" train show is coming up at the Berea fairgrounds on 4OCT08.  I'm not sure what I need but I bet it will be there, LOL.  Last fall a guy was selling new in-the-box unassembled roundhouse kits for $2 each.

Toledo and Fostoria train shows are in September.

Jeff, I assume no lightning strikes?  .75" of rain, well that should hold down the number of grass/field fires for you.  When does your rainy season start? November?  Nice weathering job on those cars, where's the locomotive?

Flash, sounds like your dad is making good progress.

Paul, are you a member of the ore group in Yahoo?

Fergie, you don't work ATON do you?  That's my new job down here in Cleveland; I publish the Local Notice to Mariners (LNM) and since we share several waterways with Canada I find myself publishing some of their stuff as well.

Packers#1 is that you on your icon?  Interesting shot, is that a reverse negative or something?

Jim, I hope they have a way to turn those locomotives at each end, what a pain to drive that backwards 200 miles.

OK, back to work for me.

Speaking of busy diners....  None seems more so than Taylor's Automatic Refresher on Main Stree in St. Helena. This hamburger stand has become a landmark, having been established in 1949.  When there Friday for lunch, there was a long order line, a normal situation I've been told.  The prices reflect supply and demand.  A hamburger, blue-cheese hamburger, sweet potato fries, onion rings, and two small soft drinks cost us $27+.

No Yellowstones went by, but the Napa Valley Wine Train with its FAs rumbling slowly alongside the street provided us entertainment while in line.

When you next move this Internet diner, may I suggest a move to CA State Highways 29 and 128 in Napa Valley.

Mark:  You lucky person, you, you're closer to St. Helena than I am.  I'm wondering if Taylor's is the place I'm thinking of when I was last there--several years ago--it looks like an old 'ice cream' parlor with lots of marble and the BEST Bratwurst sandwiches I have ever eaten in my entire life, INCLUDING Germany!  It was a little pricey, but OHMYGAW, was it worth every cent!

Love St. Helena.  Reminds me a little of what my home town used to be like before it went all Stupid.  Your suggestion for our next move, should it come, is EXCELLENT!

Jim:  Look out the window, the Yellowstone dropped off four cars of Mexican OJ.  Word has gotten around, by golly!

BTW, thought I'd post this, it was a little late for WPF--my new 'tailings trestle' for the Champion Mine.  The loco behind it is an old Max Gray/KTM Espee MT-3 that sounds like a coffee-grinder but hauls like several dozen Belgian beer-horses.  The loco itself weighs 5 pounds and makes my bridges creak, LOL!  She's due for a trip to the LHS for a BIG NWSL can.  Sure is a sweet loco, though.

Mass went well, today.  Had a substitute Priest from the Franciscan home house in Oakland.  Father Tom.  Ex-Psychologist in his late 'thirties, does Parish and individual counseling for the Order here in Northern California.  Really FUNNY guy--I know him from several retreats.  I knew it was him the moment he walked past me, rubbed my bald spot and said, "Hey, Tom, remember, I'm the one that DOESN'T sing the Acclamations."  It was kind of like Old Home Week.  Unfortunately, he forgot that there's been a couple of changes in the Liturgy, lately, but afterward, he apologized to the Community and said, "I'm a slow learner," and got a huge laugh.  We like it every time Father Tom comes to St. Francis--you're never quite sure of what you're GETTING!  Keeps us young.

Lowell's doing well, in case you're interested--ate like a horse today, and right now is a very Happy Camper due to the fact that Sunday's his day off from the injections.  Of course, I still have to pill him before dinner--THAT'S a trip, believe me!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

No Tom, there is no marble at Taylor's.  It is a small, wood-frame structure so small one wonders how so many cooks and ingredients can fit there to produce so much food, but no Bratwurst.  Eating is outdoors, mostly under umbrellas over picnic tables.

Good Evening All

Well I removed 3 Mainline curves today and will have to order 4 No. 8 Turnouts to get the right  curvature. $$$$$ I fear.

***Jeffrey, excellent job on the weathering. I especially like your work on the hopper.Thumbs Up [tup]

***Tom, very nice work on that mine. Cute little ore car and the big ol' steamer sounds like part of your family. Speaking of which, good to hear Lowell is doing well today.

We now have two cats on the porch "again". Smitty has a bad front leg (this time it's the other side). And Jambo has a bad rear leg, holding it high in the air. Don't know what is going on, but for heaven sake enough kitty injuries already. Can't afford to keep making trips to the Vet. Wife will take a good look at them tomorrow and see if there is something we can do here at home for them first.

Inlaws are back in their room at the semi-assisted living facility tonight. I really look forward to getting some sleep tonight. Running on about 3 hours today.

Here's the locomotive. It's been repainted but hasn't been decaled and weathered yet.

And I know someone here was wondering how the water tower would turn out. I trust this meets with your expectations.

Evening Gang: Mary Ann and I just got back from the creek and getting the cows out of the pasture. The watering is going good but spotty. I'd like to have a proper irragation system but even a small one runs $3500 +. We'll look at the results of the make shift job and see if it's worth it.

Lee I'm not a member of that group but I should be. I'll look into it again soon. What is the url for that LNM that you do? I'm always interested in what's going on up on the lakes.

Tom it's good to hear that Lowell is doing well. Hows the cabeese steeling cat doing? The manger of that mine needs to get after his crew. There isn't any taillings at the bottom of that trestle.

Well the girls want me to take them down to the pit so they can try and rescure some more turttles.

Sorry Lee: No I'm not a member. Though I should be as I 'm a firm believer that GPS and DGPS is not the "great I am" as some Bureaucrats and Technocrats would have us believe. When we came into Halifax Hbr last week and the fog was so thick it was actuallt rolling in the Bridge Window it was a nice feeling to hear the Bell buoys as we passed them. We've put far too many eggs in a basket to save $.  Ooops did I say that! Must be a dinosaur.

Partly cloudy skies will move in tonight and tomorrow with a 40% chance for scattered T-Storms Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will drop into the lower 70's tonight and warm up into the upper 80's on Tomorrow.

Still been busy round here trying to get summer projects finish up in-between kids n everything else. Well enough complaining bout little things, what gets done is what's done, as great grandpa use to say.

JIM,  School was suppose to start in about 3 weeks, but the rumor is, there was black mold found in the high school from the floods and temporary class rooms have been ordered. It's supposed to be decided soon whether it can be cleaned up or if we need a new school building. It's kind of a mixing blessing really; we've needed a new one for a spell and have been waiting on the state funding that's been promised for a few years. If FEMA decides it needs replaced, they'll pay 75% of it. Bad part is Marshall n Casey schools will be hollering even louder for a hostile take over and close us.

DICK,  We've got some pellets laid in, but not enough for the winter. We are talking about going with a wood stove, even though Mother hates'em. If we can find [or build one] for outside and duct in reasonable, that's what we may do.

JERRY,  Sorry to hear bout your son's troubles. Just as well you didn't make it to Altamont, there wasn't much there this year for MRR'ing and I didn't see any thing for N. Plenty of tractors and equipment, and the threshing with the steam tractor was good.

RT, Watch that diet and good luck with the heart doc.

CHARLIE,  Sorry to hear bout your FIL, we'll keep him in our thoughts, along with you and the wife.

Garry Flash, Rob,  Hope yours and every one else's family members are still improving health wise.

MATT,  sounds like you had a great working around steam [lucky]

Still haven't got the pics uploaded yet and probably won't get a chance again today with 6 or 7 kids showing up soon. Best get ta chores. Thoughts for all in need and ya'll has a gooden.

Good morning all,

Twhite, Nice looking trestle and mine.

Fergi, You need to shop the train shows and save a few $$$.  Most of my turnouts I picked up at train show over the years for between $1-$5. What do you need?  I may have it in my "got-2-have-it drawer".

This day in History, August 4th:

On August 4, 1790, the first Congress authorized the construction of a fleet of "revenue marine" cutters to enforce the fledgling nation's tariff and trade laws and protect the collection of federal revenue. The service received its present name in 1915 under an act of Congress when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Life-Saving Service. The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government and, until the Navy Department was established in 1798, served as the nations only armed force afloat. The Coast Guard has continued to protect the nation throughout its long history both at home and abroad Ð and Coast Guardsmen have proudly served in every one of the nation's major conflicts, including Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Woke up to the sound of heavy equipment, as they were getting ready for the remaining foundation at sun-up. Not sure if they will pour today or tomorrow.

Need to send a check off for an Atlas Turntable I bought yesterday on the-bay. As much as I would love one of the Walthers TT's, they're a bit pricey. Would rather spend that amount of $$$ on more track.

Have a great day, all.

Jeff looks like that TS may deliver some rain to your area.  Maybe more than you need.  Wow that water tower looks good, when will you be getting more steam?

I need to finish remodeling the storage room and closet in the spare basement room so I can expand the layout with a port authority and a coal mine.  I plan on building 2 rotary dumps for the layout (one at the power plant and one at the docks) and upgrading the coal mine to load cars.  If any of you are bored you're more than welcome to stop over and help.

My new couplers came in, so I have more cars to convert as well.

Rob, I bet that equipment running was music to your ears this morning.  How much and what kind of track do you need for your layout?

Matt, great pictures!

It is a 6 chime and has one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. And besides, it is VERY LOUD! Smile [:)]

Next week, I should be riding in the cab and starting to learn the fireman's controls properly (mainly just the injector), so I hope I can get a little bit of video to show how loud that whistle is. Anyone who is riding in the cab must wear earplugs, no exceptions. Wink [;)]
