Modeling the Southern Pacific in the 1960's-1980's
Hello, everyone:
Hey, it doesn't have to be Friday for clam chowder for me. I'll do a big bowl of the New England variety, thanks.
Read about George Carlin, answered it on your post. He'll be missed.
Well, it's supposed to be about 88 today here in Sunny NorCal, but the air has been absolutely foul in the Valley from a big fire over toward the coast in Solano County. We had a freak series of dry thunderstorms here in the north state that according to the news reports, has set off some 640 fires up and down the north end of the state. And yet ANOTHER one in Santa Cruz, this one presumably started by some idiot tossing his cigarette out the window. Yah, dry grass makes for a PERFECT ashtray, duh! Hey, smokers--the ashtray is in your CAR!!
No progress on the Buttes yesterday, couldn't get out and breathe, but it seems a little better today. I'll see if I can get anything accomplished. However, I stood back and looked at them and I'm HALFWAY there! Yay! Still got a lot of work to do on what I've installed so far, but that's the messy fun of doing scenery--you can always go back and add, later.
Of course, if my layout were in a basement (in California??) or an attic, I could be puttering away like mad. It's a real downer sometimes to be restricted in a garage by the air quality outside. Yuk!
Hope everyone is well. Terry, how are the radiation treatments coming along? Hang in there, buddy, we're ALL behind you.
Well, think I'll go outside and see if I can get any work done while it's still a little breezy around here. Once those Delta Breezes stop, I have a feeling that the smoke from the Solano fire will start creeping in again. Hoo boy, we're just STARTING Fire Season here in the north state and already it's turning out to be a disaster.

Chainsaw smainsaw. Give me a good old Fashioned Anti-Proton multidensic machine gun any ol' day. Or better yet, how about a molecular rearranger. From chainsaw weilding rabbit to paperweight with matching book-ends barring one of those, I'd take UP #1996. Thems is good fer wascaly wabbits also.
Whoops! How'd that get in there!? (I kid, I don't eat rabbit)
Hey sunsetbeachry I don't think I know you.
JPowell: Now see, your tracking granules in! Check the boots at the door (so we can hide them and trap you here!) Good to hear from ya and keep coming back.

Cute widdle baby buny! I;ve heard steam engines "say" a lot of things, mostly from videos, but rabbit gumbo wasn't one of them. I'm pretty sure I heard the Daylight swear once when she lost traction on wet rail.

Coffee in a Union Pacific mug, please & thanks! (and a side order of novacaine)
Dentist was working in Atlanta today, so didn't even get to see him. Have an appointment for tomorrow, but being a new patient he will not do the extraction(s) same day. As long as I get something for infection and pain, then I won't be tempted to jump in the path of an oncoming train. On a scale of 1 (no pain) to 10 (suicidal thoughts), I'm up from a 5 last night to about a 7 now. Would rather have a broken hand anyday. Heck, would rather nailgun my hand to a board than have this kind of tooth pain. Sure gets bad in a hurry...back into the nerve I guess. OK, finished whining now.
Left the pickup to get tires, brakes & oil change. Even the cheapest tires will cost us over $500. Next up will be the wife's car, way overdo for a brake job.
Left Millie (indoor kitty) and Jambo (outdoor cat) for spaying/neutering.
Have a good day all. Rob
Evenin' y'all. Coffee for me please. Just woke up a couple of hours ago.
Boy oh boy was last night fun. Comin' home from Enola we ran into a little problem. 130 loads of coal, 17000 tons, two engines. We came all the way down the Port Road from Enola to Perryville no problems at all. Then bells and whistles start going off in the cab and our D9-40CW displays a "Load Limited, Low Water Pressure" error. Great...We have 30 more miles to go with a limited engine. I had to spend the next hour and a half reseting the computer system so it wouldn't completely die on us. One engine was running in Notch 8 putting out about 1200 amps, and our leader was putting out maybe 250, then would serge and die and be reset...
We made it down Amtrak to Baltimore's Bayview Yard. The yardmaster said that if we thought we could get around the branch to the coal yard we were clear to go. We stormed the hill at 13mph and losing speed...When we hear over the radio "We'll be moving in about two minutes..." The coal train an hour ahead of us was now clearly in our sight and the engineer stopped the train. We would've made it up the hill too...but no, the other engineer felt like getting overtime and started dragging along (very common out here). So we sat there for an hour waiting for the switching crew to come pull us up the hill...
We would've had an early quit if it hadn't been for that...Was quite the night...
And now I'm waiting for my call tonight, I'm first out and wanting to go make my money. Sarah is in France and I can't get a hold of my friend, so I've got nothin' to do.
Later y'all.

Howdy Scott!

Good Evening All,
Back from Mosport and out to Mid Ohio Weds am - finishing cars in the shop until then. They started demo on the house today so I'll stop by tomorrow to see progress. Nice and sympathetic bunch of guys as well. Did find three storage boxes of t-shirt collection in the attic on last go through behind a pile of burned debris so I have a start on a new collection once I sort through and see what's salvageable.
Good to have you stop by Scott. Sounds like you're working your way nicely up the ladder as well and we'll all be able to say we knew you when. I'll have a coffee to go and see y'all around when I get more than a moment to sit and talk. CUL, J.R.
***Scott, thoroughly enjoyed reading about your last trip. Hope you have a smooth one tonight.
Tooth is getting worse by the hour. Found some pain meds but they hardly touch it.
While I'm here, a coffee refill and a bowl of stew, please & thanks.
Wife & I are working on house contents lists tonight. Lots more work than it sounds like. Just imagine one room of your house and listing everything in it without being able to look and times that by an entire household.

Good evening.....this is the first time on the computer today.....we have had non stop violent TS's all day. The front dies over central New England and one storm after another "trained" along the front heading NNE. My neighbor's house got hit by a ground strike, no damage luckily, the fire trucks were there for over an hour checking the whole house out. On clap of thunder this afternoon was so loud out back it sounded like a howitzer went off out side the bedroom window two feet away. Things have finally settled down until tomorrow's round of storms. 2.18" of rain fell from 9am until 4pm, torrential downpours and hail in some areas.
We were lucky here at the house, we never lost power, many people in town lost Cable and phone lines.
SCOTT: Good to hear from you, happy to see that life is "exciting" on the job !!.
If I am still on the air, we will see you guys at breakfast.
Evening Gang: Not much here a gain. We started cutting hay today. We got one field down and about 3/4 of the field across the creek before we called it a day. It was after 8:30 and getting dark.
JP: Holly Smoke 124f. We've been bumping around 100f here the last week or so. They humidity is in the 60 to 70 % range so it feels hotter. You take care now.
Rob take care of yourself. I know that tooth pain is bad. Been there several times.
Dick hang in there. Since it's not a new deal to you you know what to expect on the root canel.
I'm beat and my back is acking. Gee is there anyone in here that isn't in pain?
Good Night All
Well, I'm gonna turn this censor on it;s ear. If the posts here tomorrow, I'llf ix it then. But for now, I just need to put it down.
Dad's damned stupid cancer's back. Again. Why the *oops, paint spill* can't life leave us alone. I haven't gottne one decent god-damned time with him, there's always something happening, Always something monetary. We never get to have any time without there being sonmething on our mind. We need to replace the roof. We need to get the *** air conditioner repaired. Both are required for the railroad. We need to clean the *** house that's never had the chance to be formally unpacked because he had to be working to keep the stupid house. And now we're most likely screwed cause Insurance is gonna brand it *Pre-existing condition* *** IT. Your supposed to help us. Why the hell can't we have a normal life? yeah, look at me, worrying at too young.
Thanks guys, that helped. And sorry Big Guy. I hope you understand typical human fallibility.
Good Morning from Tipton IN !

What a prolific bunch we have here!
Phil: Glad to hear your son is going great guns! Nice to hear about the success stories as it's a terrible affliction that to many children have to endure.
Chuck: At least with all the strife inn your life you are finding the time to keep busy. Sounds like a good project you have going. Hopefully your wife's recovery will be a quick one~ Thoughts and prayers.
Flash: I know all too well what you are going through. Unfortunately it's one day at a time and make the best of the time. hateful I know and yes you scream at the top of your lungs and it seems no one is there. But you'ld be surprised. Take her tame and go easy on yourself, yes easier said then done.
Dick: Thanks!!! Iwas going to stain the deck today... Can't with all the rain you're sending my way. May see TS's today.
JP: hovered in the upper 70's here yesterday... Perfect! Sorry, I don't envy you in the least That kinda heat would melt me away in no time.
Der John: You must be getting a lot of fog these days. We have it in the morning, it's disapears and comes back again just before Lisa get's home from work.
... Not happy as it's too cool to sit on the deck.
Scott: Wow! Sounds like you are having too much fun there, Can't have that it's work!! Can't have fun and work at the same time. Glad to see you're getting good experience. That's what breakdowns are all about. Though you may want to Shhh on the comments about your co-workers regarding OT on the internet. These things have a habit of getting back to the "wrong ears". Internet has made the world one very small place.
Anyway Guys I have work to do.

Morning, Zoe - I'll have some scrambled eggs, strip of bacon, toast a cup of coffee and a glass of Ed's OJ, please. Thanks!
Sounds like our eastern Diners (and Jeff, too!) have had a day (and maybe night) of it with the weather. Dick, have you checked if the layout got bounced a couple of inches when that boomer hit close to you? That would've bounced me out of my seat!
Scott, definitely an interesting day on the job for you there. I gather that you had a good engineer you were working with. You're for sure getting the practical training on how to deal with the unexpected, huh? Sounds like you're keeping a good head on ya, even with all that stuff. Have a better day of work today!
Flashwave, sorry to hear about your Dad's and the family's problems. I'd Garry's remarks, and will be keeping you and yours in my Keep hanging in there, and I'm sure the Big Guy understands about your frustrations (and is hanging in there with you all). I'd also add, let us know if there is something we can do (in addition to prayers).
Rob, one more day and you can likely get some partial relief from that pain (and hopefully, a quick appointment for the extraction). May you and Barbara have good recall as you make your list up.
Paul, hope you get a break in your weather while you're finishing up the haying (but no rain!). I worked part of one day right before my first year of college, and that's not easy work at all (I didn't know better and wore a short-sleeve shirt...). Hope things go smoothly for the rest of the time getting the hay cut and baled.
Tom, you are definitely making progress on the buttes, from the sound of it! No doubt, it will feel so good when you have it done and sit back to look at it. [Ah....] I was thinking about your area this morning when they were talking on the morning news about all the lightning strikes up your way. Some rain is sorely needed up there now, so they don't have a bunch of mudslides when the rainy season gets there. I would probably feel really strange living out there, with no basement and all (and not just from living in areas where we get more tornadoes, either).
At the MRR club meeting last night, we got some more roadbed glued and pinned down, and bounced around ideas for the intermodal yard area. We are going to have backdrops between the two sides of the layout, after all, I found out. Had a new prospective member there (2nd or 3rd time, so he's a serious prospect). Seems like a good guy and has a sense of humor that'd fit in with the rest of us. Good worker, too.
Time for me to get back to breakfast before it gets cold. Looks like we have a few Diners in need of prayers for healing and comfort, so will be sending those up.
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Howdy all...Its sunny and warmer here today.posta be into mid-90's by friday...Its fair week and seems like we always have hot weather for it...I'll have a Ham salad sandwitch,Chips and a Diet Coke...please..Thank You...Not much going on the railroad..got a Email today and feller says He will mail out coupler conversion kit for LL GP 16 soon..
Scott..I enjoy your "real" Railroader experiences..Keep them coming...
Flashwave..Remeber the Dinner is always open and you have folks to talk to here...
Rob...If it wasn't for hard luck you wouldn't have any luck at all...Hope you get relief soon!!
Tom...Buttes are looking better and better..Keed the updates coming...
Terry ...Best to you your in your thoughts today....
You all have a good one...Jerry
Morning all--
Well, we're under a Smoke Advisory all up and down the Central Valley because of the fires along the Coast and in the Sierra. The smoke has come down here and settled, and let me tell you, it's no fun. I wasn't able to get out of the house yesterday, and according to weather reports, the Smoke Advisory is going to be in effect at LEAST until this weekend and for everyone to stay indoors unless it's ABSOLUTELY neccessary. And to top that off, I've got my 94 year old mother here for the week. If it gets too much worse, I'll have to take her back home, but one of the fires is about 10 miles from my home town in the Sierra (not threatening), so the air conditions up there aren't any better than the conditions down here. Only way I'll be able to work on the Buttes until this weekend is if I wear a portable respirator out in the garage. Thank God for AC, it's at least filtering the smoke out in the house. The Governor has called on neighboring states to help us with fighting the fires, has called out what National Guard we have left (that isn't in Iraq) to help fight the fires, and some of the fires are just having to be let go to burn because we just don't have enough manpower to cover them.
I've lived in this state all my life, and I've NEVER seen conditions like this! Right now it's about 9:30 in the morning and outside it smells like a weenie roast gone VERY bad. And not a drop of rain in sight.
Flash: So sorry to hear about your Dad. Prayers for you and yours.
Terry: Keep positive, good buddy--remember, you're more than HALFWAY there, now.
Well, have to go out and entertain mother--which means flipping through the Satellite channels to find a baseball game. ANY baseball game, LOL! She doesn't care, just as long as people in bill-caps are standing around scratching and spitting and grabbing their private parts.
Later, guys. I'm going to see if I can get outside for at least a FEW minutes without a face-mask.
Wow, I can't remember when I was last in... lol.
Listenin to some skynyrd right now, and planning train stuff. So far, I've thought about adding two curved turnouts to have two decent sized passing tracks... I just need to find a curved turnout with a 22" radius outside curve... Haven't found any yet.
I did manage to fix the track over the hill and the bridge and stuff, and it's looking good... I just need that backdrop, and we can go to town. I'm having fun running mixed trains, with reefers and some passenger cars... I need more daylight cars, I've spotted some on Ebay... I missed a good one though. That's what happens I guess.
On the drumming side of things, I need new drumheads... The ones I've had are 2-3 years old now, and they came with the kit... Bass drum head has a lovely 1" little indent where the pedal has hit it, lol.
That's it for now.
Mark
