Evening, Chloe, how about one of those hot fudge brownie sundaes that some of the crew seems to like lately. Yum! Dinner [dinner]

Paul, I'm glad you dodged the ORF watchdogs - whew! Wink [;)] Getting some good reading in, sounds like fun.

JP, is this the Red Sox game trip you were mentioning earlier? Hope you have fun - and find some nice bargains at the LHS'es. Enjoy!

Gav, good to hear some of this nice weather we were having today. Hope it stays nice for you for a while. We're supposed to have chances of (very) scattered/isolated showers the next 2-3 days, then clear up some by the weekend. On your question, are you talking about a crossing, or like the guard rails in the middle of a bridge or trestle?

Dick, are there that many careless people up that way, or is it super-dry in your area? That does sound like the firefighters are keeping way too busy.

Terry, (as I posted in your topic) those trees look great, but I'm not so sure that I could get nearly as good of results. You had excellent results, I'd say. Thumbs Up [tup]Bow [bow]

Garry, that magnetic rig is very helpful on my kitbash. I noticed that on one side of the (back/hidden) wall (where the 'entrance' doors are) the column at the corner (which I had to glue on, since I trimmed that side from five window-widths to three) needs a reinforcing piece of sheet styrene on the inside. Guess I thought that the cement would be enough for a butt joint (wrong!)...Oops [oops]

Guess I'll finish up my sundae now. Hope everyone else has a great day for their weather tomorrow!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Tall cool glass of water. Thanks!

***Jim, I was a regular at most of the top wildlife art shows from coast to coast for many years, but stopped doing them soon after moving to GA.. I sell some originals through WildWings and of course out of the studio. Just not the quantity of sales I made prior to 9/11. This printer will allow me to make smaller affordable, quality prints of more painting, without investing in large quantity runs. In other words, print them as they are purchased.

***Paul, folks from a nursing home or assisted living facility? Would like to hear more about it and how that works out for everyone. You're a good soul.

Funny news: My wife took her dad "golfing" today. By the 7th hole, following many complaints, management showed up and escorted them back to the main building. Wife didn't know any golf etiquette and was driving right onto the greens where her dad would hit the ball with his cane.Laugh [(-D] The happy ending is they received a private tour (from a most kind commercial Pilot who saw their plight) of the entire course and learned more about golf than they ever wanted to know. And they talked all about Lockheed planes (my FIL was an engineer for them). The day may have cost my wife over $100., but the joy it brought into her dad's life was indeed priceless. Betcha they were the talk around many a dinner table tonight.Wink [;)]

Evening Gang: I put a washer in between the truck bolster and the body on the diesel this afternoon. I then took it on a run around the track and now derailments. This morning I took the tractor with the grapple over and moved a pile of brush that had been dumped at Rio Vista. I had all the brush hidden and things looked pretty good. So I'm going around the track with the diesel and someone had dumped a big pile of brush in the grass area between the tunnel cut and Nussbaum Gorge right along the main. There will be a group of folks from Terry's nursing home coming out tomorrow so I have to get the tractor and go over first thing in the morning and clean that up. I want the railroad to look it's best. I guess that 30 years at Six Flags is still affecting me.

RT I hope that you hear something soon. It's hard waiting.

Well I guess I'll head for bed. For the information of the ORF watchdogs I took a couple of breaks today and did some reading. I picked up David McCollogue's 1776 the other day and am deep into it. A really good book if anyone is interested in the Revolutionary War.

Good Night All

Evening all -

Thought I'd stop in for a spell while I'm doing laundry and packing for the trip to Boston tomorrow afternoon.

Chloe - How about a nice big hot fudge sundae and a tall glass of water? Thanks! Dinner [dinner]

Dick / Ed - I see that Beckett was pulled from tonight's game w/ a stiff neck. Also seems the flu is making a run through some of the guy's ('tek).

I have the camera all set and ready to go on the trip. Of course we'll got some time set aside on Friday for some hobby shop stops and maybe I'll even get a few minutes to gatch some photo's of some trains (time permitting). I just hope the weather stays nice for us while we're out there.

Well all, take care!

Another beautiful day here today, really getting things done early this year, and we have another 7 days of good weather according to the weathermen. Still at 72F here at 6:30pm.

We have every fire truck out on fire calls!! One company is in the next town fighting a brush fire, a second company is in the northern part of town with another fire, and company three is fighting a fire across the CSX mainline. The scanner just went off and it was the Amtrak Dispatcher wanting to know how long the passenger train was going to be delayed....30 minutes was the answer. If there is one more fire, we may need Jeff to head north!!!!!

Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Afternoon all,

Looks like I'll be visiting the steel plant every day for a week.   They have some really old diesel switchers running in that plant and it's very impressive to watch the workers service these older units.  I would have to flip through some of my pictures to find the correct class of locomotives they operate down there.

I do have another 0-4-0 on the shelf and I have 14 new electric motors.  I might be able to rebuild this dockside, but the locomotives future may be short lived when I switch to DCC.  The one that caught fire is a Rivarossi, and seems most of the damage was inside the cab.  Regardless of what happens with it I'm sure after 30+ years I got my monies worth out of it.  I'll bet I paid no more than $10 for it.

Duke I might have to look into that dealer; thanks.

Ryan, I have a picture of a flatten tank car somewhere.  They steam pressure washed the inside of the car and it imploded.  I can't remember the cause; I think they closed all the hatches after it was washed.

Hi,all!

Forgot who asked ,but the RH is an atlas model. I picked up 2 of them on the 'bay pretty cheap. Still have to build the other one.

RYAN: nice pic, looks like someone took a bic lighter to a model! Thanks, also for the nice post on my tree building thread, too! Anybody else see it?

JEFF: up here, the DNR has instituted a new program for permits. Used to be you went to the local FW and got a 3 day permit. Now, you get a yearlong permit but it's your responsibility to call when you want to burn. The feelings are mixed. It really doesn't matter to me as all we burn is deadwood and cutoffs from my building jobs in the bonfire pit. Last year there was a "watch" and I called to see if we could have a bonfire. The DNR guy asked if we'd be sitting around it telling jokes and sipping beers.I said that's exactly what we'd planned and he gave us the go-ahead. Probably helps the pit's surrounded by 2-3' boulders, though!(with a hose nearby)Whistling [:-^]See ya later!

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have something different this afternoon, please. A Dr. Pepper

and some cheesey fries.

Thanks!

Hang in there, RT - hopefully they'll call you soon (and hope you get a buyer for the home so you can move, too!

JR, nice job on those buildings - that firehouse looks like it's been around forever (good job on the weathering)!

Well, after hearing about all the burn bans from everyone's area, I don't recall hearing of any in the Cape G. area. Confused [%-)] Hmm, wonder why? Wink [;)]

Ryan, that's one devastated covered hopper there! Wow!! [wow] That is a covered hopper, right (or it once was one)?

Lee, on your Dockside/yard goat, there's the Spectrum 0-6-0T (a la former MDC/other mfr's.) saddle tanker (which I like and had one in the MDC, and now have the Spectrum version), or the Proto 0-6-0 with the tender (which is pretty sharp, IMHO). Actually, somebody (Model Power?) still makes an 0-4-0, but not sure how well it runs and such.

Rob, looks like first I got Sue hooked on RBF's, and now you're going for those hot fudge brownie sundaes, huh? Can't say as I blame ya. Hope you get enough for your printer soon and can use that to market your work. Will you take prints to shows to get orders, or what?

Storm front moved through, dropped a bit of rain, and now it's sunny (but not too humid, thank Heaven!). We're at 73 F (about 21-22 C) now and headed for 76 F (or did we already hit it before I got out for lunch?). Busy morning here, but the afternoon has been pretty laid back. Yeah!! [yeah] Makes me think about doing like Dick or Ed and practicing my Zzz [zzz]Zzz [zzz]...

Zzz [zzz]Huh? Oh yeah - Dick, I checked my paystub today, and they took out your Social Security (or a part of it), so your check should be arriving before long. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Paul, you're working entirely too hard for an ORF - if you're not careful, the union will pull your official ORF card. Oops [oops]

Anybody else post to the topic on how many of each kind of loco you have? When I got mine posted, I was surprised at what I already have (especially for the size of my current layout). Yep, definitely need more land for those critters to run!

Time for me to get back to my fries. Zoe, could I have another Dr. Pepper, please? Thanks!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Lee   I picked up a Proto 2000 w/sound and DCC  HO 0-6-0 from Dallas Model Works for about $192 and that included shipping. That was with a member price and it doesn't cost to become a member and the service was good. I haven't tried it yet because I don't have track down but it was the best price I have seen and I have looked at quite a few sites. He has also posted out in the main room from time to time. The detail on it isn't too bad either.

Hello everybody...

I like the buildings I see under contruction. Jim CG, I'm glad the jig works out for you. JR, I really like the urban buildings you are making.

Jerry asked about wethering reefers. Yes, I did look at prototype photos of reefers while weathering.

Ryan mentioned the photos I had in WPF, and asked if soemthing was new. The E5's are new ro me, but old engines.

Here's depot I have under construction. It's a replica of Burlington's Highlands station. I'm still working on paint and weathering.  The benches were made by gluing scale luber between the cast metal end pieces.

As you can see from the prototype picture, the Zephyrs did not stop at Highlands. They passed by at 90 mph.

Rob,

We get lots of kids at the museum and the four layouts are all timer button actuated so they are going from opening to closing. We get a real good idea on the durability of stock in a hurry. I think we have three O scale Thomas' in rotation now to keep one and a spare running. We have a lifetime supply of broken down Lionel steam and an ever growing yard of Proto diesels in HO. The G scale logging railroad is Bachman powered and is awaiting the return of its' star Shay. Until then we have some Swiss diesel electric shunters doing the pulling. The N locomotives we have are Proto N diesels, a Kato and an Atlas. The Proto N's work best/longest. The Bachman steamer is the only N scale steam runner just now as the 4 - 10 - 2 threw its rods into a tangle.  J.R.

 & a , please & thanks!

***Paul, Yup, a Shay & a Berk. Only cost me letting go of a vintage Bigboy, Challenger, Juicejack, a bunch of track, and a few cars to do it. That being said, I think the upgrades will be well worth it, especially since my layout will be a small one, at least until art sales pick up. Speaking of which, I've been tucking away a portion of money (including some from my train fund) for a higher end printer, so I can offer prints of ALL my work. Might generate a better trickle of income compared to the few I offer now. Not ready to buy one yet, but close.

***JR, do I take it that the locos at the museum see a lot of run time? Sorry to hear about that Bachmann with the faulty tender trucks, although I'm not entirely surprised. When I finally have a layout, I'll get to test out two newer Bachmann steamers (2-8-0 & 4-8-2) and see just how well they hold up. What I ordered is all N. I forget, you run HO at the museum?

***Ryan, that is a wicked looking pic. Are you going to model one after it? Actually, would look cool sitting in a RR grave yard.

***Lee, sorry to hear of your Docksider loss. I actually think those things are very cool looking. Have parts to 2 or 3 but have been unable to make 1 decent running loco out of them yet. I wish Bachmann would retool and offer them. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Haven't burned here since the drought started. I'm a little concerned that it is not raining often enough to keep things going. I don't think anyone in the valley pays any attention to burn bans, but having a backyard right up against the forest (timber company land), it is never worth the risk. We've been burying the past year instead.

Have a great day, all.

Here in Ohio all outside burning is strictly prohibited! (unless you are burning natural refuse).  Kind of a dumb way of wording the law.

Suicide by train is a popular past time here; the rails north of I-90 are in my jurisdiction (100 miles of 4 track main) so I get to go on the investigations.  Thanksgiving - St Patrick day is my busy season for those.  Not a hard investigation unless they use a car.

Forgot to mention; last night my 0-4-0 dockside I've owned since the 70's died in a glorious flash of sparks, smoke, and flames.  Very impressive, but sill sad, I guess I need to buy a 0-6-0 to replace it as my shop goat.  Investigation is ongoing.

Here a burn ban lasts only until one of the 'good ol' boys' on the police jury wants to burn off the pine needle piles in his yard.

Good morning........61F here already and climbing 0.1F every 15 seconds, looks like 80F today. And the entire northeast can thank our brothers up in Nova Scotia. They have set up a huge Blocking High Pressure system that is NOT moving, and is causing all the storms to go south of us or stall out and dissipate. Of course this is bad news for people west of us all the way to west coast.

We have an outside burning ban in effect, and that puts an end to outside permitted burning for the 2008 season because we have no rain in sight, it is the 22nd of April, and outside burning ends April 30th. We had over 1000 brush fires out of control on Monday for a while. Luckily, we don't have huge pine forests that really fuel huge forest fires like out west.

JIM: I haven't received my SS check yet this month, are you taking another break at work ??? LOL

Later, guys, I need to get outside and enjoy this tremendous weather.

GMT continues with some nice work with your structures! You gonna have a huge city skyline soon... Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Not much happening here today.

Jeff not surprising at all with the burn issue, as burn permits are required here from the local Wake County FD before any brush or leaf burning is done. A heafty fine too if you don't get one or leave the burn unattended.

Good Morning All,

Overcast and damp when I went to the shop this morning but it's supposed to be in the high sixties and sunny today once the haze burns off. Have a run to the chassis dyno today for a misbehaving car if we get our F-350 back from the dealer (puter glitches and a bad fuel pump) in time.

Someone tried to win the Darwin award a couple of blocks away last evening stepping in front of a Metro North commuter train. she got trapped under the locomotive but survived to go to hospital. The train had tripped the warnings and gates so it might be an attempted suicide according to the papers. Of course watching some of the other apprentice morons dart around the gates or drive past the barriers it could be plain old stupidity as well.

Rob - good luck with your loco quest. We've gotten some new Proto N at the museum that work well and an Atlas H-16-44 that won't pull teeth. I had also picked up a Bachman 4 -6 -2 that worked well until the tender trucks fell to bits. To there credit Bachman replaced the trucks free and promptly, but it may be a design flaw.

Well - got to get back to it. See y'all later.   J.R.

Good morning all,

GMT, I like the green on that department store.

Jim, Storehouse 50 PC QUICK SPLICES item #96230

 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?function=Search

The blades are tapered, so all 50 will work with 22 gauge wire

Jim, how are you controlling the clubs turn table?  I wanted the Berkshire Jct motor control kit, but they stopped selling it and now I'm looking to wire my own, but need a little guidance.  I'm not a big fan of the W's little motor kit.

Jeff, that's a nice steam locomotive.

I did a little work on the east end of the yard last night connecting it to the Local main.  I also had to run a crossover to connect the local with the industrial complex (AKA the Time Saver).

Ok time to make more money for the layout, see you all tonight,

Lee

Evening Gang: I got the two gondolas that John has and changed the trucks on one and put on new couplers. That took a couple of hours. Turning a 7.5 inch gauge car over takes two persons and a bunch of grunting. The other car needed a new coupler on one end so it can act as a transition car between the ones with the new type couplers and the old ones. The live steam hobby needs some standards for couplers. The ones I'm putting on now are from Cannon Ball and will work well with almost everything else except the old Back Yard couplers that I had been using. Tomorrow I have to drop the trucks from the diesel and add a washer between the truck and body bolster. The locomotive body has now rocking action at all now and I think that is the reason it's derailing.

I haven't heard from Ed yet. He is supposed to be here some time Friday, I think.

Jerry that's a good looking caboose. I need to get a couple for the 7.5 inch gauge. Well one at least.

Rob so you got a Berk and a shay. Nice going.

I'm still worn out and sore from that switch. Tomorrow after I take care of the locomotive I'm going to chill and do some running. I have to test run the loco don't I?

Good Night All
