Ryan, saw your post on the Allied Rail Rebuilders, good kit. I'll have to post mine on the web once I get the yard tracks laid (maybe this weekend). Mine will be the car shop rather than a locomotive shop.
BOP? I know a BOF is (basic oxygen furnace) what is a BOP? I have a 4x4 corner section behind my roundhouse that I want to do a back drop (half building) BF & BOF.
PC, excellent news! Sorry you had to miss class, but I'm sure the family appreciates your time.
RT, good luck on your tests for the VA. Is this a GS position?

Well, it's not the switch. It's this 1/3 18 radius curve before it, where the locomotives and or cars will ride up and over, and hit the switch's straight track, shorting out.
But that's not important, becuase...

Lee, feel free to add your post to that thread if you want. Always interested in how others model similar kits. A few years back there was a great thread on the New River Mining Kit and it was full of great ideas on how folks did thiers on various layouts.

Bob K., was that like that song - with all those "color glossy 8X10's with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back, describing what each one was, to be used as evidence..."? (Any Arlo fans out there like me who memorized the entire lyrics?)

RT, I'm sure you'll pass the PPD with flying colors. I would keep an eye out for the opportunity to upgrade the WG to a GS position. More money and benefits with a GS position. If you have questions please feel free to ask, I may not have all the answers but I know where to find them.
Hoople, I'm an articulated-aholic I would love to see pictures/movie of your challenger and Big Boy in operation.
Garry, very cool, one of my jobs is a pollution investigator, so I get to wander over the local steel mills once in a while. The plant in Cleveland produces slab steel and the plant in Lorain produces tube steel. The slab steel is hauled on special cast iron flat cars and if you go down at night you can see them glowing orange as they head for the rolling mill.
Here are the pictures of the Mittal Steel locomotive at the Cleveland plant. They now have two locomotives dedicated to the military.

The side of the locomotive says: The Cleveland works sends you a letter from home, you are not alone.
This steel plant was Ottis, then LTV, then ISG, and then called Mittal.
Evening Gang:
PC: I'm happy to hear that your son is home. I'll bet he is really happy to be in his own bed.
Lee thanks for the pictures. I went on and looked at some of the other pictures of the Sam Laud and the stock piles. It's sad to see the remains of the Hulets. Too bad that at least one couldn't have been saved intack.
Not much here today. I cleaned up at the well site so I can mow the grass and get it ready for letting the cattle in. I also cleaned up at the winter feeding site. How about manure a foot deep.
Well I guess I'll hit the sack.
Good Night All

I know all about the dreaded S. Hard to fit one on a 4x8. It's off the diverging route on a #6 turnout, and it continues to the left. (I hope that made sense...)
LSWRR, http://youtube.com/watch?v=omLz8fIupmM is a link to my challenger. I will get video of the big boy... WHEN IT GETS HERE...
Jim: I know, I'm never excited over anything...
Good to see PC Jr. is free of hospital-land...
Well I see that we got some great news for today.
Philip, Wonderful that your son will be sleeping in his own bed tonight!
Jeff: Did you get the "flux capacitor" to work before that F unit went through the backdrop?
Ryan: Don't remember that song, but I sure do remember some of the co-eds (some beauties at that), streaking about UMass Lowel back in '72.
Paul: Don't blame you for being sore. My days of breaking concrete or swinging a maddox are long gone. My back won't hang in there for more than a few minutes.
J.R.: Missed your post yesterday. You must have been writing the same time as me. So how did Sebring go? I did catch one post about the new trailer. That clothespin mansard is something, are they holding the roof supports?
GARRY: I thought so. I have backdrops very similar to those. They will need to be cut and mounted on foamcore. The backdrop is going to need some airbrush blending for the smogged, smoke look on the club steel mill. We need to be careful about shadows from the track lighting.
The club steel mill fills the inside bend and about 7-8' of backdrop. No pics of the rest of it.
Jim: Well I don't know if anyone was doing any singing on this one. There have been many other wrecks with substantial damage, entire 20+ cars stringlining (from someone ??, tagging/ coupling the caboose- I take credit from that one last year) over running thrown switches and just trains plowing through stopped trains (another one of mine). But all these other wrecks looked like model train mishaps, this one involved 3 trains and from track level looked like the real thing. Now this happened 5 min before the close of Sat show, but still had about 100 people watching. Think I could get away w/ the excuse of operator fatique? Had been running all day. God, I love those Stewart/Katos, 14 years of long hard running and still can knock anything off the rails!
This is just one pic that a member sent. The other views are better. Will get them from others later.
There's much more of the wreck in the tunnel, The B&O Fs are mine (the culprit), the derailed train was waiting to enter the yard around the other side. I didn't even see it and dispatch never gave me a clue. The hit threw cars every which way and the derailed ones hobbled along into the tunnel. Seconds later, 3 B&M RDCs emerged from the tunnel and he had no chance at all. Careened into derailed box cars and continued across the grade Xing and sideswiped the Tomar crossing gates and just about took out the shanty. The guy in the middle of the pic (holding the DT400) is the owner/ operator of the Budds. He's looking for the nut running that B&O passenger. Who me? Hope to get the other pics soon.
Hoople: Gee, maybe Sue can pick it up for ya, and test it and break it in for a while. No wait, I don't think it will make the turns. This big boy is taking so long, you could have scratched built it by now.....
Lee: That some serious paint and airbrush work on that switcher. Heck of an artist did that baby.
Sue: Yes, I really do have a great relationship w/ my kids. April and I saw to it to be involved in every aspect, school, church, Habitat for Humanity, scouts, sports, projects, arts and crafts. They're a joy to spend time with. I guess you reap what you sow. April was an unbelievable wife and mother. I even reasured her as one of the last things I said to her. And promised to take care of her "babies"
Well wish everyone a good evening, 'til later,

I know it isn;'t right, but your describing engines climbing up too sharp a radius. A friend of mine;s test oval is 15 inch radiius, and his longer engines (GP ## etc) do what your describing. They climb the rail, get on top, and derail. On the engines: Check and make sure you don;t have something like the brake piston (diesel) binding up and preventing the truck from making the turn. Another friend had one of those, it climbed and derailed, and once I popped off the break cylinder, it was just fine.
I know that can't be it though as it;s a new problem... Try running the trains the other way. Does it do it then?
EDIT: I rered the post. It may yet be that the Challenger is just not able to take an 19 inch radius, despite the advertisements. Try the above and then get eye level wit the engine and watch the drive sets. Id; set the engine on crawl. See if you can spot which set is doing it, and what it might be catching on.
Disclaimer:The above is written by a guy who has worked with a similar problem, and has NO idea what he's doing.
PC: Glad to here he's home, I hope it all goes well. Hate to bwe the speller of bad woes, and it;s great to have everyone back together, but I just hope nothing is too soon. (If that makes any sense at all)
-Morgan
Hello everybody ....
PC ....... I'm glad out young hero is home. If I could post those animation things, I would post a marching band and fireworks to celebrate. Please keep us posted on the recovery progress. I know it will be a long and painful raod. Prayers continue.
Lee ..... The switcher photos almost reminded me of the bi-centential colors in the mid-1970's. it's hard to imagine how a switcher could remain looking so clean in the steel mill. Fancy painting for sure!
Bobk ... Thanks for showing the club's blast furnace. Nice weathering. Now you know the backdrops I used are not tall enough for the balst furnace. you may have noticed I crop off the top of it in my pictures. It's a huge structure. Mine has flickering lights under the main furnace that do a good job of simulating the hot metal. The roof over the main furnace can be lifted to see.
Jerry ... You asked how long I've been building the current layout. It's about six years so far. The dreaded non-model-railroad-stuff often delays progress.
Mark .. I'm glad the big boy is arriving. We'll have to have a celebration for that, too.
Happy Model Railroading.
Just stopping in to say, glad that your son is home, Philip. I will check in tomorrow.
Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Flashwave: I will have to try that. I think I'll head to the LHS, see if they have a decoder for the beasty, and see if there is any 22 radius curves by atlas, along with some rail joiners.
Speaking of ze beasty... Found a video of someone elses big boy, and I realized that the sound is magnificient, and the looks of the big boy... Ooh, when is mine going to come... http://youtube.com/watch?v=GQgeqVT7rxs
PC,, great news on your son getting to come to home finally. Ya'll still in our thoughts
RT, sounds like your gonna get the VA job, we're sure pulling for ya.

Good Morning from Tipton IN !
Bill Tidler Jr.
Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Morning folks!
Glad to here that PC jr and the family are back safe and sound at home again.
I got good news, I lost 10 1/2 lbs. since eating healthier and exercising. My BMI index reading still says I'm obese for my weight and height, getting closer to just being overweight though. I need to be 170 to be considered a healthy weight.
Check you all later!
TTFN,
Ryan
Morning, Diners! Zoe, I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ, cup of coffee, and a helping (small) of the breakfast buffet, please. Thanks, Garry!
(As Tony the Tiger would say) Grrrrrrrreaaaaaat! to hear that your son is home, PC! And Zoe, you say there's someone outside the door for PC and his son?
PC, tell your son a big back home from the crew here at the Diner! Grrrrreaaat! to know he's back home. (Just make sure the benchwork under the foot of his bed is sturdy - I understand those casts can weigh a bit... Maybe some 1X3 L-girders might be in order )
Sunny and windy here today in Cape G. - s'pposed to reach the lower 60's (F) today, with breezes around 5 mph currently. Chance of showers today, tomorrow and Friday, but stopping for the weekend, before it resumes on Monday. Nice that the rain gets the weekend off, huh?
Bob K., that train pile-up looks (I suppose?) very prototypical, huh? Yeah, it'd be Murphy's Law that it would happen with 100 people there to catch it all. How long will it take for the inspectors to get done, before trains can resume rolling?
RT, good that you have the tests done (except for the waiting). Hopefully, they'll get back to you fairly quickly on the job now.
Haven't heard any shouts, so either the Big Boy hasn't arrived, or else Hoople's been too busy trying it out so far. Mark, we expect a review soon, with photos, y'know?
Paul, that's a heap of fertilizer in the winter lot - a downside of farming, huh? Will the cattle keep the grass trimmed down enough from here out, that you don't have to mow as much?
Well, I'd better finish up my breakfast for now - got a 9 a.m. client coming (I hope - Monday, I only had three and none of them showed.
Blessings on your Wednesday (and the rest of the week),
PC: This is wonderful news, Praise the Lord!...and prayers continue, as you know.
Garry: Sorry I don't have the band yet, and most of these came from PC in the first place (IIRC), but here we go...
Ryan: Congratulations! Way to go!
TTFN, I'll drop in when conditions improve in the coughandstuffedupnosedpartment.
