Good Morning from Tipton IN !
Bill Tidler Jr.
Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Hello everybody ...
Tom ... that' really interesting about the Rio Grande 2-10-2's .....
John Boy ..... My Chapel Car book arrived. Looks like lots of interesting reading. I appreciate your posting a review last week...
I've been running GN trains lately. I should get back to building the layout. I've got the next area's plans firmed up now. I have so many old HO locomotives, it does not seam feasible to change to DCC. However, the farther I go on this layout, the more complex the wiring gets. DCC would simplify things.
We've had a lot of church stuff going on lately. A lot of time spent on that. ALso, our church friend with cancer is having a rough time with the chemotherapy.
Happy Model Railroading......

Good evening Crew,
Thought I would stop by on my way to bed.
I just found this photo on a site called "Somewhere west of Denver" it is a really great site for western railroad photos.
I thought you might like this one. Who said that Mom and Dad Alco didn't teach their kids to smoke... A couple of old SP&S units working the Keddie yard for the WP.
All for now, sleep well ya all.

Evening Gang: I haven't said much in the last few days. I've been but too pooped to write.
Tom Lowel is getting some great care. I guess you will spoil the heck out of him. I'm supprised that he puts up with the IV every day. He's a good kitty for sure.
Jeff: After looking at the park and the ball game I'd like to ask; Who's on first. OK gang take it from there.
Fergie I think that soldering the wires back on the motor may help. Electrons don't like to jump those gaps. Lazy arn't they?
Well I've been spending the last couple of days pumping out the frack pit. I couldn't see wasting all that water by letting it evaporate. The water isn't very deep so moving the pump is being done often. That is hard work in the 100F weather. The pit is lined with black plastic that really helps the evaportion rate. Also the sweat rate since the pump is on the bottom.
I'm going to hit the sack.
Good Night All
Time to pop in for a little snack before this place slides onto page 2. A Dagwood special please!

Garry--
If Robert LaMessina wrote it, then I'll BELIEVE it, by golly! I've got his book on Rio Grande steam locos--RIO GRANDE, SUPERPOWER OF THE ROCKIES, and in that book at least, he's right on the mark. I like that guy's writing and his research. That Rio Grande book really opened my eyes as to what the road wanted in steam locos (and pretty much got from Baldwin and Alco), and where they wanted the locos to assign to particular divisions for the most power for the money. For instance, I always wondered why the huge F-81 2-10-2's had such short Vandy tenders--well I found out that Rio Grande ordered them from Alco in 1916 specifically for service over Soldier Summit on their Salt Lake division between Provo and Helper, (a relatively short distance) and didn't need great big tenders for the length of the route, but they wanted a big brute of a loco for the then 4% (later reduced to 2%) grade. Makes sense to me. They worked that section of the division very successfully from 1916 to 1955--a pretty good life span.
Besides, that cute little Vandy is a real attention-grabber every time I run my F-81, LOL! One of my friends said, "That tender--it's a joke, right? I mean, where's the REAL one?"
I just grinned. "You're LOOKING at it, buddy." He shook his head. Still doesn't believe me.

Tom, I'm confused too about the GN Z-6s.
Division Point's website says they were leased (in one spot from the SP&S, and another the NP).
This other site says they were purchased from the SP&S and then later resold to them:
http://www.steamlocomotive.com/challenger/gn.shtml
One thing for sure, Division Point's version of the loco will cost much, much more than Sunset's.

Mark:
I'm a little unclear on that, myself. Perhaps a GN/NP expert could let us know. I'd heard that GN bought them outright then didn't like them and sold them to the SP&S, where they were so successful that SP&S turned around and bought some Z-8's when Alco produced them. I do know that GN visited Alco very seldom, buying most of their steamers from Baldwin, or building their own at the Hillyard shops. Maybe someone on the forum can clear up the confusion. But that Z sure looks like a pretty lil' thang . And it's from Sunset, and I've had good luck with my Sunset models (SP 2-8-0, AC-6), so I'm not too worried about the running qualities. And frankly, considering the prices I've seen used Z-8's going for in the brass market, the price is almost a steal. Actually less than my PSC F-81 2-10-2, and that baby is a JEWEL!
Good afternoon, 3H weather here again today, this has been a summer like we haven't seen in years here. Tomorrow, the Berkshires are due to get flooding rains, 4-5" and we get about 2-3", then on Thursday, the ever so slow cold front moves east and we get the flooding rains. I was checking the reservoirs, lakes and ponds around here and they are all at max, and the water table is fairly high, so we might be in for some real flooding in lowlands. I am on a hill, so unless the hill slides away, we are safe, but Cherry Valley may be in trouble.
I was noticing in an email today that Trueline trains has just delivered a line of real nice CN and CP box cars. These cars look great for detail. I think Luc, Fergie and John are moving quickly to buy them up, cornering the market.
FERGIE: I think the Hudson can outrun the storm if she has to. Still bears watching though. Any MRR construction this trip? When are you due back in port?
JERRY: I heard that you finally completed your green power vehicle, she looks good. Methane powered, very clever. How many miles per Diner meal do you get in that speed demon? Rumor has it that the Weather Channel wants to do a special on your design!!! Congrats!!! I will be sure to watch the show.
ED: I see you are headed inland just as Dolly hits the Mexican east coast north of you. I think you will be well away from the rains.
MRR progress: Once again on hold. We have a split level ranch set into a hillside. Originally there was a single car garage attached to the house on the lower level right side with an open deck on top used as a playpen for the kids. The open deck later was made into a dining room addition as the family grew larger. The single car garage ( 14' wide ) became far too small to be practical, so we converted the garage to a storage room and closed in the front with a door and a window. The problem is, that front wall is 2x4 and faces the cold northeast in winter. The door is non standard height at only 75" due to the former header over the garage door. So, we are removing the wall and rebuilding with 2x6 construction, a new window that is low E, argon gas filled double pane will be installed, and the header will be cut to allow for standard height heavy insulated door. Of course the 2x6 walls will allow for much thicker insulation as well. We picked up all the wood and the door at HD today, and the window is ordered, due in a few days from Marvin Mfg. Might this room make a MRR room in the future.......???? The Shadow Knows hehehehehehheehehehe ( How many of you guys remember the radio program, "The Shadow" with Lamont Cransdon?
Later,
I can resist anything except temptation.

My excuse is that GN didn't like them very much, so they've loaned it to the Rio Grande because Rio Grande desperately needed to supplement their own L-105's, and the UP clone L-97's weren't cutting the job and the Z had about the same TE as the Rio Grande Baldwins (actually, a little more). Besides, I've got a couple of GN brass 'on loan' that I run fairly often, so it's not that the Z will be an 'orphan.'Tom

STOP THAT, LOL!!
Actually, I ran into a used 4-10-2 at Roseville Hobbies, the last time I was in there. Forgot the mfgr, but it sure was a handsome devil. I know that UP had some 2-8-8-0's working on the Shasta Division right after WWII, but (and don't throw things, guys) UP steam power just doesn't do anything for me, for some strange reason.
But those BLI's just take too much voltage for me.

And WHY, you ask, if I model Rio Grande and SP, am I getting a GN Z-6 in October, LOL?

Because they are irresistable. However, you'd be better off getting UP 2-10-2s and 2-8-8-0s which the SP leased after WWII. They ran in Nevada and Oregon, respectively. Or maybe you should save up for some SP 4-10-2s which Division Point plans to produce.

Morning all--
Well, we're due for another heat-wave by the end of the week--triple-digits. Today is supposed to be about 94 degrees--farewell Delta Breeze. Oh well, as long as the smoke's gone!
Read in the local paper that UP is being sued for $204 MILLION by the Federal Government for a 52,000 acre forest fire that a track-crew caused in the Feather River canyon several years back at Storrie. It's the largest Federal lawsuit for a forest fire in history. This should prove to be interesting. The government is not only suing for the cost of putting the fire out, but also for the cost of loss to timber and habitat. Now that's a CHUNK!!
Makes me think that it's too bad that the Forest Service couldn't sue the Feds in 1960 for the fire that broke out on Donner Ridge during the construction of Interstate 80 that burned 56,000 acres, was thirty miles long and five miles wide and burned to the outskirts of Reno. Tit for tat, guys, LOL! Of course, the Feds (Forest Service) suing the Feds (Interstate Highway Commission) would have been kinda fun to watch in court, wouldn't it?
Well, Lowell's doing fine. Just gave him his morning IV injection, which he took really well. Just muttered when I put the needle in. Have to IV him twice a day--morning and evening-- with a 100cc saline solution to keep what's left of his kidneys operating. First the IV, then the amoxycillin pill (THAT'S fun ), then his morning jar of Gerber's.
Actually, that photo of him was BEFORE the kidney thing started, when he was about 20lbs. Right now he's about 12, and he doesn't want anyone seeing him in his current state. (Later, Daddy, when I look a little better.) Spooky's very glad to have him back, she was getting a kind of cat-cabin fever with him gone.
Fergie: Glad that the grease hadn't solidifiied in the gearbox. See how that Canon works when you get back and put the little devil on the tracks. I've started replacing some of my early Canon motors with NWSL's--they seem to have a little more 'kick' to them, especially at slower speeds.
PC: Love the photo of Zoe. Now THAT is a cat-stare, for sure!
Well, I've decided that I'm going to get rid of my BLI steamers. Since I'm DC, I've gotten tired of pumping all of that voltage in just to get the sound going. I like them, but I've got to thin out the herd, so to speak, and none of them are for the two railroads I model. So I may put them up on E-bay. If anyone's in the market for a first-run N&W 2-6-6-4 or a couple of Pennsy M1's or a UP 4-8-2 in Overland paint or a Santa Fe 2-10-2 and 4-8-4, I may start listing them. They all run fine, but at my age and with my amount of brass, I just can't see the expense of converting to DCC.
Well, Spooky's staring at me over the monitor (Where's my Chicken of the Sea, daddy!?) so guess it's time to placate her.
Best to all, prayers to those in need.
***Jerry, does it have one of those signs on the back..."Makes Frequent Stops"...? In the Drivers Manual, does it warn against making "Sudden Stops"? This could go on and on...
Wife is bringing home lunch following a visit with her folks. Her mom is down with a bad back (happens often) and her dad is just wandering around their place aimlessly. Not much else to say.
After pricing outdoor fieplaces, I suggested to wife we make our own. She didn't have a problem with it. Probably won't get to it this year, especially with all the construction that should be starting soon. The new build should be completed in 6 months time.

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
Hi Gang,
Looks like the diner's full for lunch today, maybe I'll just sit on a stool beside the till so I can look into Chloe's eyes, while I sip on a root beer float.
Very nice day here, lots of sun and I think it will be the hottest day of the year so far. Probably around 33 C. I have some work to do in the back yard but I am going to wait until after lunch so that I will at least be in the shade.
We had a great time in Spokane and a good trip home. The highest priced gas along the way was $1.44/9 for a litre in British Columbia. That works out to over $6.00 a gallon US. Thankfully I had planned it that I wouldn't need to fuel in B.C. In fact I try to not fuel in Washington while I there if I can get away with it as the fuel in Idaho is .25 less than Wash. and it is only a 30 mile drive. So we fuel in Post Falls and I only had to top up once in Washington. Coming home from Post Falls we made it through to Taber, Alberta for fuel at $1.33 and that brought us home. They say that oil is down over $4.00 a barrel this morning and the radio says that the gas is going down some here, so I'll go out later and see where it has shaken down too. I know it won't be much less but any amount is a help.
JERRY, That is a pretty efficient looking power chair. You not only have shade but portability of the pot. I would suggest that you try and work out something for a door or pull down shade that would give you a little privacy on those special moments that arn't "Kodak" moments.
JEFF, Glad your Puter is back up on both legs today, it is really annoying at any time when a person has problems but especially with the server. You expect better service from them that that. Speaking of service...... I still don't see any trailer spaces in that park of yours yet let alone serviced sites. You are never going to get visitors at this rate.. But you old Fox, maybe you planned it that way. But CN Charlie and I need a place to park when we come down to try and catch some of those Louisiana Crappies and get away from the snow flakes.
Glad the pets are all doing better and our prayers are still with those who have family members under the weather.
By the way, I took some pictures of that "E" AB units in Spokane Valley that they use as a children's dental clinic. I'll get my DIL to give me a hand to get them on here for you all to see.
Must get to HD as I need some lumber for this yard project today, so I'll sign off for now.
Keep smiling ya all.......
Johnboy out.........
The "Wobbly" has made a couple of short trips since I've been back but no serious work down there. Still anxious to try out the new airbrush.
