Good Afternoon Sports Fans!

Think of it this way... It doesn't matter who's on Base if you don't have a batter to bring'm home! Just ask the Blue Jays!!

 LSWrr wrote:

"His sailing vessel was on its way to the Azores islands in Portugal when it overturned while being buffeted by winds and heavy waves from the storm" Sounds like he needs to sit through one of my NAV classes.  N.S.  And Azores don't even look alike.

You can't complain to me about 20' seas.  I drove a 44' MLB in 35+ seas for 13 years.  You're in a 200'+ ship Smile [:)].  The gondolas were everything from New Jersey Rail to UP so I painted a few of them in L. S. & W. colors.  It really doesn't take long to apply decals, but I found it's hard to get started applying decals.

251B engines are used in our 210 FT Coast Guard Cutters.

Lee: I'm not sure what he was thinking, Wafi's are like that. Wether or not he was trying to get into the Gulf stream and take advantage of the 2-3 knot current or whether or not he was trying to take advantage of the prevailing Winds I'm not sure, regardless the winds prevailed!!

He's lucky as all he had was an 406 EPIRB and a VHF radio. Don't even know if he had the right radio to get Offshore Forecasts.

Ya I hear ya I did a 3 month stint back in 85' on a 44'. That's when I decided I was a "Big Boat" kinda guy. Hudson is the perfect size for this trade as she's 300'. She rode the 20' foot seas very well. Talking to Port Met Officer yesterday, he was telling me some waves were being measured by the offshore Wx buoys, not too far from us, at 35'. Still considering how bad it could have been I count my blessings. PS you can never have enough "Gons". So which DCC system are you looking at?

JR: As you can see by the above post things could have been a lot worse. All in all the outcome was a positive one so I'm not complaining one bit. Always a good feeling one we get one for the "Good Guys" regardless who is first on scene.

Terry: we heard some places got 6" plus. Too much too quickly. I know there was flooding in Halifax with Cristabol. According to my Mrs. we got about 2 1/2" of rain in a day.

Garry: Though everyone is shaken by the ordeal at least no one was injured and the creep is in jail. Things could have been worse. Though if it had haoppened to my family I'd be very upset too. That's why we have a big dog with very big teeth. I wouldn't be as comfortable being out here without Miss Molly. She loves 99% of the people that have entered our house and for some reason there's been the 1% she's wanted to rip the throats out of... Makes ya wonder.

Rob: There's been some articles on "Compression" and from wht I've seen it works providing you only give the "viewer" one angle to look at the scene with (from the front) It works well with both scale of buildings and the smaller scale being elevated and to the back above the larger scale.

Now for the Answer on my Quick Quiz! And you'll hate me for this!!Big Smile [:D]

The Answer was furnished by our Chief Engineer who got the answer from the ALCO rep.

2= February, 51= the year of the beginning of Production and B=2nd generation

So simple! Even I wouldn't have known

in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Garry, that sounds like a crazy fella alright. Hope something bad happens to him so he can't do that again.

***CN Charlie, enjoy that Arcam player, (and amp if you get one). Not cheap stuff by any means. Thumbs Up [tup] Good to hear Pippa is well cared for. But please don't mention "pulling teeth" again.Wink [;)]

***J.R., with every new section of screened porch, door, extra pad poured, etc. that my wife adds to the project, I see the funds for trains, new speakers and other enjoyable extras dwindling away.

***Jeffrey, really looking forward to seeing that baggage car transition.

***Philip, nice pics. Are they just replacing old ties or upgrading rails as well?

***Tom, how's Lowell holding up? How long will those IV injections be necessary?

QUESTION: My wife discovered the Hawthorne Village On30 Civil War train sets. IF she had them in the forground as a "reenactment scene", might it work to also have her standard HO on the same table a bit further away, or is the difference in size too great? Any thoughts?

Have a good day all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Morning, Diners! Zoe, a cup of coffee and some of the breakfast buffet for me, please. Thank you, ma'am.

Garry, glad to hear nobody was harmed and nothing taken by the... creeep. Once you figure how he got in (window, door, whatever), beef that up (for example, a deadbolt that has to use a key on both sides - I've heard on the ones with a knob inside, the crook will break a nearby glass and reach in to undoo the lock). As others said, beef things up.

Jeff, that baggage car looks good. We will await seeing what you will  (to borrow Calvin's phrase) 'transmogrify' it into... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Lee, you're just churning out the decals there. Thumbs Up [tup] I'd better be careful, or I'll catch the decaling bug and get the data sets out that I've been meaning to put on some undecorated box cars I have...

Paul, how'd you do in your area? Any outlying rain come your way from Dolly?

JR, are your contractor folks to the point of a guesstimate yet on how long your house's rework will run? Though I know you want it done right, I'm sure the sooner you can get back into your own home, the happier you'll be. Yeah!! [yeah]

CN Charlie, good to hear you have a good local audio store, and a good owner and crew there, too.

I'll be at the corner booth, if I can slip around dozing Duke there. Zzz [zzz] That guy can sleep through almost anything but dinner call. Whistling [:-^]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Blessings on your day-before-the-weekend-starts,

Good morning.

It's 74 and very cloudy here and not a drop of rain yet. The high is expected to be around 90 and there's a chance of thunderstorms. That'll probably be a bunch of dry rumbles, again.

A friend sent me a smooth-side baggage car. It appears to be the same type as the 1:1 baggage car on the edge of the KCS yard in Leesville. I'll have to make a couple of modifications to it, such as cut away the diaphragms and remove the glass from the doors (the real car has none). Then I can get started on painting it to look like the one in Leesville. That'll give me the derelict railcar I want for an abandoned spur.

Good Morning All,

68F and raining again this morning. It has rained on and off for the last three days but not as long and hard as north of us so no flooding yet. We do have up to 6" predicted. Just to clear up any misconception, we are in a rental house until ours is done as the entire second floor is gutted along with most of the downstairs walls and all the ceilings.

Fergie - I know fighting the wind and waves is no fun especially when you end up standing down half way through but the work is much appreciated especially in an emergency.

Jim - It can't be any fun dragging pumps around in 100F heat but it's also no good letting perfectly good water go to waste.

Jerry - You've really gotten that layout in good nick. Good to see you making progress. The pics look better all the time.

Inch - Any new railfanning or did I miss it all in the posts I haven't caught up?

Rob - the three most expensive words in the English language are "might as well". We're going through the same with some upgrades we've put off on the house since we have it all apart anyway.......

Anyone heard from Ed down Mexico way? Hope he and Paul make out ok in this latest storm.

Tom - how did Big Sur finally make out? Are most of the fires at least under control in the hills by you? I'll get to see for myself next month as I have two races at Laguna Seca coming up. If things go ok, I'll stay out between weekends and get a day or two to play tourist.

Well - gotta go - I'll catch ya'' later.   J.R.

Good Evening Diners!

Guess what? It's raining here again and we're still waiting for delivery of some hot air from Dick. If he can't deliver then some warm air from the Gulf would be good. How about it Jeff? After all we send you all that nice cold, crisp air in winter so it would just be neighbourly to send us some warm stuff in summer but please hurry as we only have 5 or 6 weeks left of summer.

Tom, Great to hear Lowell is doing fine but from what I've heard cats often don't take kindly to injections. Our vet has a special box made out of plexiglass into which he puts the cat and it has a hole in to to give the cat the injection. I've never actually seen this box but was told by reliable sources that it exists. Perhaps I heard it from one of our dogs as they just stand there and don't even flinch when they get injections and for Jamie that is twice a day for the past 7 years. I liked your reply to the clerk in the store, good one!

Speaking of vets we had our other Westie, Pippa, at the vets today to get her teeth cleaned again even though it was done just a year ago. She had 4 pulled but doesn't seem to be bothered much.

Today the wife and I went to listen to a couple of CD players to replace the one that died on the week-end. We went back to the same store where we bought our system and I was amazed that one of the owners remembered my name and I haven't purchased anything from them for over 10 years. That is one thing nice about small indepedents. We bought an Arcam player as it sounded the best and it was on special too. I set it up tonight and was amazed at the improvement over the old player which we thought was a good one. Now there was a deal on the matching Arcam amp so I think I'll call the store tomorrow and see if they'll take my old one in trade. One thing just leads to another.

I hope to get out to the boat this week-end but it will be for a clean up. We've heard that the fish flies are really bad this year and that local businessmen in Gimli are cleaning them from the sidewalk with a shovel. Not sure if you're familiar with fish flies but they are a harmless insect that hatch out of the water and live for only about 24 hours. They sure do smell though when they die and start to decompose --just like rotting fish, hence the name.

Well it's getting late and I need to take the dogs out again before the rain starts up.

See you soon,

 CN Charlie

Here's some really disturbing stuff. As I have said, Shelley and I have 5 kids, and 2 have blessed us with grand kids. One son and his wife live in Cincinnati area. They have 2 girls, a 7-year old and a 4-year old.

This afternoon, daughter-in-law returned home from shopping with the 2 granddaughters. They entered their house. Seconds later, Daughter In Law was looking face-to-face with an intruder. There are some really evil people in our world. Girls are OK physically. As it stands now, the perverted, 18 year old male sicko is in jail. We're all very upset.

Evening all,

Just finished decaling hoppers 1401 - 1445 tonight, and hoppers 1401 - 1422 are in the spray booth with their first coat of dull coat. Now I'm starting to swap out couplers.

It seems my gondola collection has grown out of control! I have a total of 39 now.  I think some may go to the Bay for reassignment.

More good news: I received a letter in the mail from Ford Credit; it's proof that I've paid my loan in full! This is one of my top economic achievements since I bought the truck and then 11 months later I got divorced.  Some money will go towards a DCC system; the rest will go to savings.

Morning all--

Well, we're due for another heat-wave by the end of the week--triple-digits.  Today is supposed to be about 94 degrees--farewell Delta Breeze.  Oh well, as long as the smoke's gone!

Read in the local paper that UP is being sued for $204 MILLION by the Federal Government for a 52,000 acre forest fire that a track-crew caused in the Feather River canyon several years back at Storrie.  It's the largest Federal lawsuit for a forest fire in history.  This should prove to be interesting.  The government is not only suing for the cost of putting the fire out, but also for the cost of loss to timber and habitat.  Now that's a CHUNK!!

Makes me think that it's too bad that the Forest Service couldn't sue the Feds in 1960 for the fire that broke out on Donner Ridge during the construction of Interstate 80 that burned 56,000 acres, was thirty miles long and five miles wide and burned to the outskirts of Reno.  Tit for tat, guys, LOL!  Of course, the Feds (Forest Service) suing the Feds (Interstate Highway Commission) would have been kinda fun to watch in court, wouldn't it?

Well, Lowell's doing fine.  Just gave him his morning IV injection, which he took really well.  Just muttered when I put the needle in.  Have to IV him twice a day--morning and evening-- with a 100cc saline solution to keep what's left of his kidneys operating.  First the IV, then the amoxycillin pill (THAT'S fun Whistling [:-^]), then his morning jar of Gerber's.

Actually, that photo of him was BEFORE the kidney thing started, when he was about 20lbs.  Right now he's about 12, and he doesn't want anyone seeing him in his current state.  (Later, Daddy, when I look a little better.)  Spooky's very glad to have him back, she was getting a kind of cat-cabin fever with him gone.

Fergie:  Glad that the grease hadn't solidifiied in the gearbox.  See how that Canon works when you get back and put the little devil on the tracks.  I've started replacing some of my early Canon motors with NWSL's--they seem to have a little more 'kick' to them, especially at slower speeds.

PC:  Love the photo of Zoe.  Now THAT is a cat-stare, for sure!

Well, I've decided that I'm going to get rid of my BLI steamers.  Since I'm DC, I've gotten tired of pumping all of that voltage in just to get the sound going.  I like them, but I've got to thin out the herd, so to speak, and none of them are for the two railroads I model.  So I may put them up on E-bay.  If anyone's in the market for a first-run N&W 2-6-6-4 or a couple of Pennsy M1's or a UP 4-8-2 in Overland paint or a Santa Fe 2-10-2 and 4-8-4, I may start listing them.  They all run fine, but at my age and with my amount of brass, I just can't see the expense of converting to DCC.

And WHY, you ask, if I model Rio Grande and SP, am I getting a GN Z-6 in October, LOL?Blush [:I]

Well, Spooky's staring at me over the monitor (Where's my Chicken of the Sea, daddy!?) so guess it's time to placate her.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile [:D]

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a small steak, some veggies, and a glass of wine, please.

Jerry, is that chair your one for the blazing sunny days? Should be good for some shade; and how 'porta-potty' is that? Wink [;)]

Tom, good to see Lowell's back home and getting fat and sassy again (or would that be fatter and sassier?...Whistling [:-^]) How long do you have to keep his mouth shut to get him to swallow the amoxycillin, or do you hide it in his food (though I've heard about pets finding anything non-food and spitting it out/leaving it in the dish)? That is one whopper of a lawsuit on UP, all right. Oh, you had me worried there for a minute when you said you were selling off some locos ("The YELLOWSTONES? Ohmygosh, Tom's gone bonkers from the heat!"Shock [:O]). Then I saw that it was your 'smaller' locos. (Whew!)

Rob, good to hear you're getting ready to have 'em start up on the house. An outdoor grill sounds good, yep. Dinner is in how many months?Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] If you have enough rocks, maybe you could build the outside of it with them and line the inside with fire-resistant bricks. One idea, anyway. But that's only after you stop tearing yourself apart, fella. Got to take better care of your body, Rob. They might not have all the spare parts you need.

JR, great to hear you're about to have 'em get started on your place, too. Any idea how long that will take, with running things by the code and zoning board, inspectors, etc.? I've heard that building/re-doing a house in town is a tad more complicated than out in the country. Hopefully you won't have any more snags in the process. Yeah!! [yeah]

Paul, messing with the pump and all in 100 degree weather does not sound like my idea of un, but hey, different strokes for different folks... Wink [;)]

Jeff, good to hear that your Internet has picked up to usable speed again. Thumbs Up [tup]

Well, after my trip to the lumber yard about a month ago, a couple of days ago I stopped by the storage unit, and found I have some more lumber there. Hey, I might have enough for my next expansion of the layout after the one I had already mentioned! Cool [8D]

Hadn't seen the news earlier tonight - how's Dolly been doing? One site I checked showed it looking like she was tracking into Mexico more than the US. Ed may have to watch out or he and Fran will get drenched, perhaps. Paul, will you be seeing any rain from the edges of Dolly up your way?

I did a little checking on internet today, and was wondering about broadband wireless, but found out that (for Verizon, who I had thought had a good deal, only offers that price when you have a cell plan with them also. Sigh [sigh] More looking to do, I suppose.

Well, I'll be working on my steak a while. Dinner [dinner] After that, I'll be heading home to crunch some numbers for my spending this year and tuning up my budget a bit. I'll see everyone in the morning.

Blessings and a good evening's rest,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Afternoon all.  Sunny and just a tad smoky out today--high of 92, but it's predicted to be triple digits by the weekend.  Oh, joy, oh rapture!  Smoke is from a grass-fire in the south area, a little 1-1/2 acre job that got put out in about ten minutes, but of course the smoke headed toward MY neighborhood (Hey, Tom lives there, let's bug him!).

Lowell has decided that he definitely does NOT like Daddy giving him saline injections, so I phoned the Vet and they said to bring him in every morning.  Luckily, the Vet is about a mile away, so it's not too much trouble.  He's eating me out of house and home on Gerber's, had to go in and buy a case of the stuff today.  The clerk at the supermarket just stared at me and said, "You're not REALLY a new father, are you?"  I grinned back and said, "I'm a musician.  We can do ANYTHING."  I think she's probably STILL figuring that one out, LOL! Evil [}:)]

Only problem with the Gerber's is keeping Spooky out of it.  She thinks it's for her (she think's EVERYTHINGS for her, anyway.).  But as long as I can tempt her with an ear of corn while Lowell's chowing down (4 times a day), she's happy.  Lowell seems pretty chipper in the morning and evening, I don't think he knows that he's sick.  Afternoons of course, they're ALL sacked out, plotting of how they can mess up the house after I go to bed.

Fergie:  I'll almost bet that it's loose wiring on the motor.  Generally speaking, Major Rebuild and Brass are not usually words I'd use together--as far as electrical problems--unless said brass is recieved in pieces.  And yours looks as if it came nice and shiny-new.  Generally speaking, brass is VERY forgiving to work on.  Even that 'basket-case' Yellowstone I got some months ago went back together just beautifully.  The stuff is BUILT!  However, if that Canon motor of yours seems sluggish (which some of them can get), take my advice, and hike the new loco down to your LHS and look for a NWSL can that will fit.  Those babies have GUTS!   And new cans are easy to install, just use some silicone gel to mount it, and not only are you in business, you're also ready for a DCC conversion if you ever decide.

Jeff:  That A&C routine is still one of the funniest I've ever heard.  And I think I was about 4 or 5 when I first heard it.

Rob:  Hope the shoulder is a simple muscle-spasm, they usually heal up in about a week.  If not, see your Dr, and have him check for tendons and ligaments.  When we get to an--AHEM!--'certain' maturity, our bodies have this certain non-subtle way of telling us, "Not now, Dude.  Maybe later."  Believe me, I know!  Whistling [:-^]

Well, that's about it for now.  Gotta go give Lowell his mid-afternoon Gerber's.  Would you believe that I have a cat that doesn't like CHICKEN?  Never heard of such a thing.  Why, it's positively UN-FELINE! Shock [:O]

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile [:D]

refill, please & thanks.

Just walked around with the contractor to go over the extra stuff wife wants done. Sure is adding up...gulp!

Well, the NSLHS (NS = not so) still has not done the detailing on my two locos, but said he would in the next few days. Not much new to report on.

FERGIE,   I believe that the 251 stands for 251 cubic inches per cylinder.  The "B" will mean second series of engine production.

Sorry you had to take that extra pounding last evening, but always glad to hear you are doing well.

Grayfox,    So glad you liked the picture.  ALCOs true to form, what else can you say?   Fellas, I'm really sorry about the multiple entry for that picture. Not sure how that happened. I guess my cut off fingers were stuttering.

GARRY,     Glad to hear that you got the book,  "This Train is Bound for Glory"  It really does look like a good read and lots of history doesn't it ??

Bluehills,    Where are you? Haven't heard from you in awhile.  Are you on holidays or just soaking your feet at the Spa??

I'm at work, so I can't stay and talk.   See you all later.

I'm confused.

So we have a whole baseball team, and they're spread out over a couple of days, right?

Got it!
