Good Morning, Zoe - I'll just have a go cup for now, though I'll probably swing by a bit later this morning. Thanks!

Jeff, your mail arrived yesterday. With the temps you've been reporting, I think I might be jealous of them lately. Wink [;)]

Sigh [sigh] Oh, darn, Philnrunt - but then again, the folks south of here in New Madrid might not want to turn loose of one of their prime tourism features. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] I was wondering about that SD90-whatever, and was about to ask if that was reflective tape, since it didn't quite look right for neon. Big Smile [:D] Guess on that offer for Johnboy, CN Charlie and our other Northwestern Canadian neighbours, we could send 'em some of our Missouri mosquitoes (to go along with their Canadian horseflies? Think I'd best get moving - it's only 19 F (-9 C) with a wind chill of 8 F (-13 C), but the power's been holding up, so I'd best at least go see about getting to w**k today. Otherwise, those retardment checks might dry up on Dick and our other ORF's! Shock [:O] Just kidding, Dick! But I won't have all the ice I had to remove from my car yesterday, at least. (Whew!)

Prayers for everyone's heat and power to continue working properly today, and for all our ailing Diners (and family members) on the mend.

Blessings,

Good Morning All,

What Lee said above goes here too. Snow last night turned to rain early this morning. We worked until 10pm on alignments and then shoveled our way home to return in the slush this am. Oh and the back wall of the shop has sprung another leak. I'll have a regular and a donut to go please.

Hope the rest of you made out ok through this weather. Catch you later.   J.R.

Good morning,

Well the snow turned to rain and now we have .5" of ice on everything.  The drive into work was an inconvenience if anything. Yea yesterdays 10" of snow isn't much and I don't mind driving in it, but I hate all the idiots that drive 60 mph through 10" of snow it becomes a nuisance trying to drive around their spun out car. I enjoyed driving in WI, everybody knew how to drive.

Phil, give me a heads up about 3 weeks before you come out and I'll put the list together for you.  I think the RR HOF is $15/person I have more fun walking through a flea market.  The science center handles the Mather, oh and there is a shop right next to the Mather rebuilding the old trolley cars.  They want to start a vintage overhead electrified rail service around the stadium and downtown.  It's open for visitors.

Hello all- and THANK YOU ED!!!!! You don't know how happy I am to see one of my pics -FINALLY- here!!!! I'll be sending you 5 tank cas of cold air, so you won't need to run your AC anytime soon!

Cederstrand- I believe it is one of UP's SD90MACs, only now they are SD9043MAC's or something like that, due to EMD's inability to crank out 6000 HP from their prime mover. Either that or an SD80 MAC, I guess I could look up the number on the UP roster site, but it's one or the other.

About that pic, I showed it to the officer I work with last night and joked " This is one of the few neon light equipped SD90's" and he took it seriously. Had to explain it was just (very good) reflective tape. And, ED- I found my other pics today, and here in a bit will be (trying) to upload them to the same albumn, these will be the ones with the KCS de Mexico units, with a few interior shots. Please check 'em out. I thought I had lots of train pics developed, but there are only a few, all of the rest of the rolls are our trip to Mich, with shots of USS Silversides, USCGC Bramble and McLane, so maybe PAUL would like to see those. And PAUL- Great news about Lara, sounds like shes gonna be fun to have around. Kids sure are great for getting you off your duff and doing something, no matter what.

GMT- Good to hear about your BLI engine, and as for PC's color scheme- I HATED it growing up. All we had around here was PC black, N&W black and C&O navy. But today, I love those old, dirty, black engines. I remember seeing a consist of ALCo C-628's, SD40's, F-3's and a GP40 or two hammering east bound out of Anderson, and have to admit, even then I knew they were pretty neat. What I'd do to be able to go back with a digital camera and get shots of 'em. They shipped my SD today, so we'll see just how much sound adds to this hobby. I feel it's going to make me want more sound equipped units. Oh welllllll.

Inch- You forgot to include the fact that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knows how to hot-wire any and every vehicle made, from '65 Chevy's to the Space Shuttle. Good list. I actually saw an officer absolutely DESTROY a credit card one night trying to open an entrance door to an apartment. He was standing there, sadly holding a mangled Visa, and said in all seriousness- I swear this is true- "Well, it works on TV." I laughed till I cried.

JIMRC- You could always throw in a ....uh, lets see, Cape Girardeau- Oh yeah, a piece of faultline to sweeten up the deal to keep the cold NOB. How about it, Lastmountain, you folks want 200 tons of corn and an earthquake? Sure, doesn't sound like a great deal, but.....well, actually it sounds pretty lame. Nevermind Jim, guess we'd better just keep the longjohns handy.

LSWrr- Hey boy howdy, it's always good to have someone local to get the straight dope from. It looks like we'll not be up until at least May, that is when Cod opens for tours. My friend is a board member of our Museum of the Soldier, in Portland- check it out, all of you vets, they have a site IIRC- and he would probably LOVE to hit Greys' Armory, he collects military headgear and uniforms. I will give him a heads up on it and see what we can do. And as for the R&R HOF, I've heard it's a bit taken with itself, but still, where else ya gonna go to see that stuff? It's one of the "negotiable" parts of the trip. We are doing this on a budget, so we'll see what the wallet can stand.Let me know more, and as the actual travel time approaches, we'll be a bit more able to let you know what and where, etc. Thanks.

Took Amyjo to Portland today, in a snowstorm that I had no idea we were going to get, she had a meeting at the sheriff's dept, so I dropped her off, went to W-mart and picked up 3 HO scale autos, a GTO Judge, AMC Pacer and Plymouth Fury rag top. They'll look good waiting at a crossing for a PC SD-9 to roll through. Also got a few pics of an NS engineand the D&RGW painted 5391 sitting by the ethanol plant, they looked real fine in the snow.

Thanks again all of you for making this such a great site. Take care.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Had to run some errands in town this afternoon.  While Fran was taking care of something I spent a few moments just gazing out over the view of the river from downtown.  It's actually quite a pleasant view, what with the blue sky, palm trees, and the river.  Especially so on a warm afternoon.  Maybe just a bit too warm.  Up in the mid-80's again today.  Supposed to drop into the low 60's tonight, I hope so.

Not to take anything away from the railroad dining car menu, but adventures in fine dining here today included a really tasty chicken parmesan, which I made with a spaghetti sauce that I made from scratch Chef [C=:-)]  (from fresh tomatoes, that is) yesterday evening.  Man, that's a lot of work.

Northern Phil - nice Photobucket albums.  I really liked this one:

Colby:  The beauty of having a portable layout is being able to easily work on all parts of it.
Like this?  I call this one "Wiring for old folks."  No need to crawl under your layout to solder connections, just flip the layout on its side.

Ryan:  I heard that Arizona Rocks and Minerals stuff was good. Let us know how you like it too!
That's what I use also.  And I like it.  Oh, yeah, just to let you know that I used that recipe substitution that I mentioned to you.  Hard to tell if it worked or not, as I threw so much stuff in there.

Paul B:  Are you guys still planning on coming NOB this April?
Definitely coming NOB.  And still planning on trying to get up to Weatherford.  Current schedule has us arriving in your neighborhood on Friday afternoon, April 25th.  We are planning on staying two nights, heading back towards Houston on Sunday after brunch.  The meet is still the weekend of the 26/27, right?

That's about it for this evening.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Evening Gang: The storms predicted for last night were pretty much non-events for us. Folks north of us did get some real action but nothing to knock out power or cause real bad problems. It has been colder today around 50f for the high. It has also been windy so it felt much colder. Of course not as bad as NOB. We went in to see the baby and found her in a privet room with her mother. Dianne is staying with her for a couple of days and then SHE COMES HOME TOMORROW. Yes. Mary Ann held her for a bit while Dianne ate lunch. Was she ever happy, the baby to. After we left the hospital we stopped at the Borders book store. They had gotten in a book I had ordered on the 32nd Inf Div. My father was in the Wisconsin Natonal Guard 32nd inf div, 126 field artillery headquaters battery. He was the First Sargent. I used to have the batterys guidon flag hanging on the wall of my bedroom. I have an albume of photoshe took during the war. It's very interesting. Unfortunately Dad never really told me alot about the war, just snippets. I guess I never really sat down and talked with him about my war eather.

Rats. I forgot to call Tray at Clark Gardens and let him know that the back orders on my last order to Walthers were OK. I'm going to order a couple of IHC C&NW pass cars. I really don' like to use them because of the work needed to add Kadees and decent trucks. Unfortunately it's the only way I can get a smooth side baggage and round end observation.

Well I guess I'll cut out.

Ed are you guys still planning on coming NOB this April?

Evening, Chloe! I'll have a grilled salmon (smaller portion since I had a late lunch and also I want to go easy on Jerry), glass of milk and cup of coffee, please. Thanks, Jerry!

Well, I spoke too soon on the power - about 3 p.m. this afternoon (after flickering 2 or 3 times) it went out on me. I went back by Panera's and got a soda and waited a while until I decided to see if the power company had restored power yet. Turned out that they had, a little before I got home. So I'm hoping that they're making progress more quickly than they had expected, and may get the power back on for the rest of about 10,000 people in this area. Both Cape G. and Jackson (just west of here) still have 'warming centers' for people to go rather than be cold at home. However, one of the 3 in Cape has power out in its area, and they're having everyone else go to the other two. Shock [:O]

I'll be at the table by the stove, warming up, if anyone comes in, Chloe.

Blessings and stay warm,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

My truck needed new breaks so I dropped it off last night, I just called and they said still waiting on parts, seems the last 2 delivery trucks dispatched with my parts have crashed on the way to Euclid.  Downtown Cleveland is grid locked with fender benders.  I ran the snow blower twice today (I have a big multi-stage blower)

Called LHS and ordered 5 milk trucks, Dorothy found them in the W sale catalog on page 39 for under $4 each.

Morning & almost afternoon folks-since it's almost lunchtime I'll have the burger platter off Ryan's menu & Pepsi please.

I know I'm not usually here much in the daytime but I have a SNOW DAY!!!!! Doesn't happen often but I relish them when I do & make the best of it-today I'm going to be doing work on the train cars, only having to stop to run Dawn to work since the heater switch in her Focus isn't working. Dead [xx(] Here's what we're looking at for today weatherwise:

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EST THIS EVENING...

THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE ACROSS NORTHERN OHIO AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA THIS AFTERNOON...AS A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES ACROSS OHIO. AN ADDITIONAL 2 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON...WITH THE HEAVIEST ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED TO BE SOUTHEAST OF A YOUNGSTOWN TO MARION LINE.

THE SNOW IS ALSO EXPECTED TO BECOME MIXED WITH OR CHANGE TO A PERIOD OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. WITH THE BEST CHANCE ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST OHIO AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA. NORTHEAST OHIO COULD SEE UP TO A TENTH OF AN INCH OF FREEZING RAIN OR SLEET..WHILE AROUND A QUARTER AN INCH COULD ACCUMULATE IN THE VALLEYS OF CRAWFORD COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA BY MIDNIGHT.

HEAVY SNOW AND/OR ICE WILL CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL IN THE WARNING AREA YOU SHOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION.

There were a couple inches on the ground when I got up this morning to let Magick out-2 hrs later when I let Logan out, Magick's paw prints had disappeared so it's building up rapidly.

Mom & Dad are still on the mend but slowly. Mom's back in the hospital she started at & receiving her therapy to get her strength back, & looking forward to going home soon. Dad's still trying to take care of himself by staying indoors.

Ryan, glad you're feeling better. I have an old (1993) portable scanner in my truck-it no longer works with batteries so I got an adapter from Radio Shack that lets me power it from the cig lighter. I used to have the police/fire freq. dialed in, but got tired of the chatter when I was trying to listen to a song on the radio so I locked them out. (I know I could just turn it down, but it's under the passenger seat out of the way) I keep the RR freqs on though-I hear occ. W&LE chatter here, but need to go north to pick up CSX's New Castle Sub stuff. I may look into getting a better base unit down the road with a tall & permanent antenna here so maybe I can listen to  CSX here, as it's the line I railfan the most. (still haven't gotten any NS or Ohio Central chatter-need to re-check the freqs)

Well, I better get busy & accomplish the things I want to with this extra time-everyone stay well, warm & safe!

Morning folks!

Anyone have a frequency scanner? I just bought one last week and been listening into the local chatter around here on the way into work every morning, seems there is a local Amateur Radio group that has the "Early Morning Show" with check-ins  on a 2 meter repeater and sounds like a bunch of motorcycle guys too.  Duke you got a Ham radio on your Goldwing? Question [?] Got the heads up from local fire dept on some brush fires burning one county over, but the main reason I got it was for rail fan adventures. Any of you use one to track down locomotive activity in your area?

Still coughing and a sneezing around here, Monique got back from the doc and has bronchitis, gave her a prescript for a Z-Pac antibiotic, I put a call into the doc and still waiting to hear back if they are going to give me something else. Just thankful we don't have anything grave and serious. (Fingers crossed) Angel [angel]

Happy B-Day [bday]

Mike yea that bell and headlamp do look prototypical on the 40 n 8! And ya snuck in a birthday yesterday now did ya! Well Happy Belated Birthday! Nice quotables too from the movies!

Just to vote in the poll, yes, I can easily rotate my layout!!

Is that like rotating crops? Laugh [(-D]

Colby I like sprinkle the ballast on top of the roadbed and track with a spoon. Then using a ½" wide brush I gently smooth out and spread the ballast into the position that fits well between ties and down the roadbed. Once the ballast in the position, I use a fine mister with wet water and I lightly spray it onto the ballast without disturbing the material too much. I will allow it to get saturated then I slowly drip my 1:1 white glue and water with a drop of liquid detergent into the wet ballast. I soak it liberally with this glue mixture from the inside of the rails first and then along each side of the roadbed. Allow this to set up overnight then check for any areas that might need another application of ballast or if all looks good I clean up the rails and rail flange way and run trains to test it out.

Morning all!

Another busy morning around here.  Just glad the weather the guesser guy was calling for never happened (again).  The 3"-7" of white stuff turned into 1".  We did get a little ice though so that we all wouldn't get too lazy behind the wheel.

Oh well, I'm off!

and now for model railroading. for those of you who have ballasted their own track what is the best way to lay ballast, or the preffured technique?

This is one method I use for laying and securing ballast. The track is in place and you're ready for the next step.

Now is the time to make sure that all your track is in gauge and all gaps between track sections closed. If you don't, you may have serious problems later on. These include derailments, uncouplings, shorted turnouts, blown power packs, etc, etc...

For ballasting, I use an 80/20 mix of fine and medium ballast. If you use fine only, the ballast starts to look smooth and boring after a while. The medium ballast adds some bigger pieces and makes the ballast look better. For securing the ballast, I use a 50/50 mix of white glue and water. Don't use matte medium. You'll destroy your track trying to take it up later. Don't ask me how I know. With the water/glue mixture, you can reclaim your track by soaking the ballast with water. The glue in the ballast will soften and you can pull the track up. When putting the ballast and glue mix down, be very careful not to get any in the turnouts. This could freeze the moving parts solid. I suggest moving the ballast into place with your finger, followed by a light brushing with a small paint brush, like a brush for painting models. This moves the ballast away from the sides of the rails so your locomotives and rolling stock don't ride up on it and possibly derail. Be sure too, that the ballast doesn't lay on top of the ties. This could cause problems with coupler pins. when you've finished smoothing the ballast, spray the entire track with a solution of water and a few drops of dish washing liquid. This will insure that the water/glue mix goes through the ballast and glues it tight to the track. When you've done that, apply the water/glue mixture with an eyedropper or old glue bottle. Do the entire track, being very careful not to get it in the turnouts. Let this dry for at least 8 hours, better for 12. When the ballast is dry, clean the entire track with a bright boy or similar eraser. A rubber school eraser works well, too. If you don't do this, the glue on the track will insulate the rail from the locomotive. Be sure to clean the top and inside top edge of the rails. When you're finished, wipe the rails with a soft cloth that's been wetted with liquid track cleaner. Wipe off with a dry cloth. Don't use paper towels.

Frosty Good Morning to you, Diners! Zoe, I'll have some of Ed's OJ,

a cup of coffee and one of Bill T.'s chocolate donuts, please.

Thanks!

Well, it's all the way to 29 F (-2 C) in Cape G., which is almost our predicted high of 30 F for today! The town just west of us (Jackson, MO) has a lot of people without power due to the ice taking down some tree branches (and then some power lines). They were mentioning on TV which places were 'warming places' for people in the Jackson area to go take a lawn chair (or some other seat) to sit and warm up a spell. The broadcast had a city official there saying it might be nightfall before power is restored in some parts of the city. Cape G. is fortunate and we have power (d'uh!) but I don't know yet if we'll be open at w**k today.

Oh, I got the originals for my mini-seminar printed off last night, so if we're open I just have to make some copies once I get there. But as for the exact order in which I cover stuff, I may be 'winging it'.Wink [;)]

On the layout rotation survey, I could (theoretically) rotate mine, but since I have a bunch of stuff under it, I'd need to move that first (and have someone else help me with the other end of the layout). Sort of a 'yes, kind-of' vote from me... Whistling [:-^]

Inch, I like your "Things we wouldn't know without movies" list. Laugh [(-D]

If any of you use Yahoo, watch out for a phishing email like I got today, claiming that you need to update information with them. I suspected it was 'phishy' from the mediocre English grammar used, but the long headers showed it didn't come from Yahoo, and the actual link in the email (supposedly a yahoo address) on close inspection goes to some site in Germany. I forwarded a copy to Yahoo and AT&T's abuse addresses. So don't fall for it!Shock [:O]

Did some looking on the Caboose Hobbies site last night. Oh, and my first order from them came in yesterday (some Arizona Rocks and Minerals scenery stuff). I will need to get some additional AR&M rocks and ballast and such, but have to wait for next paycheck on that.

Better get myself ready in case I have to go do my seminar and other w**k today. Everyone stay as warm as possible (in the case of our Western Canadian neighbours, that means only -20 F, I'd guess). And puhleeeze, please take Philnrunt up on that offer to trade off some of their corn  for redirecting the next Clipper or two somewhere else - say northeast, instead of a southeasterly direction. We'd all appreciate it. Or else, if you want to send part of it to Ed to keep him cool down SOTB, he might like that. Wink [;)]

Blessings and prayers and keep those longjohns on,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Things You Wouldn't Know Without Movies

It is always possible to park directly outside any building you are visiting.

-A detective can only solve a case once he has been suspended from duty.

-If you decide to start dancing in the street, everyone you bump into will know all the steps.

-Most laptop computers are powerful enough to override the communication systems of any invading alien civilization.

It does not matter if you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involving martial arts - your enemies will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around in a threatening manner until you have knocked out their predecessors.

-When a person is knocked unconscious by a blow to the head, they will never suffer a concussion or brain damage.

-No one involved in a car chase, hijacking, explosion, volcanic eruption or alien invasion will ever go into shock.

Police Departments give their officers personality tests to make sure they are deliberately assigned a partner who is their total opposite.

-When they are alone, all foreigners prefer to speak English to each other.

-You can always find a chainsaw when you need one.

Any lock can be picked by a credit card or a paper clip in seconds, unless it''''s the door to a burning building with a child trapped inside.

-An electric fence, powerful enough to kill a dinosaur will cause no lasting damage to an eight-year-old child.

-Television news bulletins usually contain a story that affects you personally at that precise moment you turn the television on.

Sleet and freezing rain have made all local roadways slick this morning. Areas of light snow, sleet, and freezing rain will continue today with accumulations staying light but slick spots staying numerous. Temperatures will warm into the upper 20's with light northeast winds today and cloudy skies. Temperatures will drop to around 13° tonight with mostly cloudy skies, cold northwest winds, and cold wind chill temperatures near zero. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with temperatures topping out near 30°.

I personally like to lay down a lyer of glue on the roadbed, then attach the ballast. After its dry i will soak it with watered down rubbing alcohol and then spray it with diluted light glue.

Think I'll grab a donut and some choffee. see ya'll later!

Phil,

When are you coming up?  I hope you are waiting for the temperatures to rise above the freezing mark.  We have an operating B&O Roundhouse, 2 good LHS, if you want to travel 45-60 min (West side) outside of town there is a large N&W outdoor museum. Downtown we have a passenger vessel that gives guided (narrated) river cruises that allows you to get a close up view of several historic RR bridges and sometimes the steel plant.  I'm good friends with the manager of the Grey's armory in downtown and I'm sure I can get you guys a private guided tour of the place, they have military uniforms and hardware from mid 1800's-2003.  In my humble opinion the R&R hall of fame is a waste, but maybe you guys will enjoy it.  Again let me know and I will chat with my friends and put a list of places to see and a hotel list.  I'll get you the info on the COD and Mather.
