Nah, I occupy too much time by dropping in on different forums.  TrainBoard is my main forum home, various of the Trains.com forums are my second place (especially including this thread), and the Atlas forum (where i seldom post).

I also have 3 forums specifically oriented to Mexican railroads and model railroading that I read and occasionally post on.

ED,

In regard to your Blazer at that mileage.  If you haven't already done it, be sure to get your head gaskets and intake manifold gasket changed to the new upgraded ones.  At that mileage the 4.3 Ltr. motors are subject to those gaskets failing and dropping the coolant into the pan.

Down there it might not be as serious unless you do run "Dexcool" antifreeze in it. But up here when that happens, you have just said good-bye to that motor and about $2600.00.  There is no saving it when this new antifeeze hits the bearings. They are gone.  Don't bother asking me how I know this.. Banged Head [banghead]  I have experience and one of my sons is an Automotive Technician.

Night all, hope you all sleep well after that big load of deep fried shrimp that Jeff sent up.

Ed- I became an ORFit about two days after I started my first job back in 1973!

Our main problem is people expect us to do regular life stuff even though we work midnights. And we still think we can! That shift sure do screw you up,man! If we had gotten decent sleep Fri night, it would have been a gloriously different story, as opposed to the sad and sorry one I related.

So does that Warning Tsket go on my Permanent Record, or is that only Written Tskets? And if so, where's my Steward, I need to file a grievance!

You just stand by for my report when we go to the Ft Wayne Swap! Why, I plan on buying and getting and grabbing and....well, you just wait!

I sure hope they have alot of stuff there, or else Ed's gonna laugh so loud, we'll hear it up here!

I have tried 3 times to join the Atlas Forum, but each time, I never can log in! I belonged to it way back before they closed it and changed things, but since then everytime I've tried to join, they still have my e-mail address as already being a member, but I can't log in with my password. I tried to change it, but that didn't help either. Just the other day, I set up a new member profile, I haven't went there yet and tried it, but it sounds like I'm missing some good stuff!

Colby, from what I could recall of your comments on the layout earlier (you using 18" radius and Snap-Track/#4 switches?), I did a little guessing (using my layout software). Looked like a passing track would take a major re-do of your layout. I played around with the basic layout, and came up with this plan that maybe could give you some more sidings for industries. Of course, for the one near the bottom, your loco will need to use the turntable to back onto to reach it, but maybe that will be worth the trade-off...

I can send you a bigger image if you like - just email me if so.

Dick, at least you got a break to take your Christmas lights down. Hope you don't get too much from this next storm.

Got the laptop back today, so tonight I tried it out. The repair tech had said that it would start up from a FireWire (aka IEEE 1394) external drive, and I have a 60GB in such an external enclosure. So I was able to get it to start up (using a key combination to select the drive from those connected/internal), though it seemed to hang when I tried to download some updates that were rather big and took a while. So I may take it to work tomorrow and see how it behaves there. Could download updates there, since they have a fast connection (T1 or dual T1). Now to wait for the replacement motherboard (logic board) and keyboard to get here. Looks like the tech re-seated the keys that had popped up (couple or three), so I may be able to use the keyboard I have coming for a backup instead. Smile [:)] Soon I will be untethered again. [YAY]

Rob, good that you were able to get the heifers (and their driver) on the road and on their way, so to speak. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I think our Great Northwesterners need to carry a bunch of rocks in your pockets to walk, with those winds out there! Shock [:O] Sounds like something else, for sure.

Heartland Division CB&Q:

JimCG ... Good luck with the laptop. If the replacement motherboard won't work, try a fatherboard next time.

Laugh [(-D] Actually, Garry, there are some Macs that have smaller sub-boards (like the one the CPU is on, or power connector boards on laptops, etc. - which may or may not be attached to the motherboard). Those are called.... (ready?...)..... daughterboards. (Really!) Kudos Bow [bow] to your BIL for being in the right place at the right time (for the young lady, certainly).

Philnrunt, I sure hope AmyJo isn't within earshot when you say that about "Work Release". Oops [oops]Black Eye [B)] Funny, though...Wink [;)]

And PC, Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Philnrunt's comments for your wife's progress. Bow [bow] Give her a (gentle) hug from us! And what did you say to possibly tick off the PTB on the Atlas forum? (Probably better email or PM me, come to think of it...)

Ed, you're right, you don't want to lose that ORF membership card. Get those Zzz [zzz]Zzz [zzz] in. Take one for me, while you're at it! Smile [:)]

Better wind it up for now - about time to start getting ready for bed. I've wound up getting to bed after 11 p.m. last couple of days, so I need my beauty rest. Zzz [zzz]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

Nope it's a hotel. 90% of the buildings you see are made of paper. I got these from and old model railroader mag that I got as a reward when I practised every day between gutiar lession. I don't take gutair lessions anymore because trains have taken up the space.

Colby.... good layout and it will be fun for you. Jeff might is suggesting a change to a turnout. Normally, it works better to have the mainline passing through the straight part of the turnout, but don't worry if you are not able to do that. Also, don't get sick, okay? ]

Having the mainline go through the straight part of the turnout would mean that I would not be able to do switching opperations at the mine. The switch for the TT is so that when the train come onto the main it's heading east literaly. My room is like a compas. my bed is in the north, my desk is to the south, the toybox is to the west and my dresser is to the east.

Der- that Atlas TT came ready to roll (used). and right now I'm in study hall. cause my mom kicked me off the home comp.

Jim- oringaly I was planning to have the single main become a double main going behind the turntable. as for the indusrty coming off the turntable track that takes out the parking lot for the passenger station. and possibly a part of main street.

The coaling track could be move closer to the Turntable to allow a second mainline to go behind that turntable.

thanks for the complaments!!

Morning Zoe, I saw Chloe's truck pulling away as I drove in. I'll have one of Bill T.'s donuts and some coffee, if NJ Bob didn't finish off the pot. Oh, you made another pot? Great. Thanks!

Our weatherguessers here are saying and lightning today ("isolated thunderstorms"), and warming up from our current 40 F (4 C) to 52 (11 C) by the afternoon. We'll see.Wink [;)] We have SE winds at 7 mph (11 kmph), wind chill of 35 F (2 C). Good day to chill your bones this morning. Hopefully, the warming later today will help.

I'll be over at the booth polishing off my donut and savoring the TH coffee if anyone comes in, Zoe. Ah, only today and Friday until the weekend. Smile [:)]

Chilly out there this morning, though it's warming up now.  It's a whole 38 degrees right now.  Supposed to hit 48 though.

Just hangin' at work today and have basketball tonight.

Whats up with you?

Colby .. I smiled a bit when you mentioned gutar lessons. When I was a teen, my parents bought me a cheap one out of a Sears catalog and I took lessons, too. After ten lessons, I had earned ten gold stars on my chart. That entitled me to one model airplane kit. I took the model airplane home and assemebled it on my bed getting glue on my sheets. My mom made sure those sheets were on my bed thereafter. Soon after, the guitar found a spot in the attic and stayed there for a few decades before it was finally tossed out.

On your layout, my one concern about the switch is the one on the top center of the drawing. A train traveling clockwise from the upper left corner will enter the turnout and abruptly change from curving to the right to curving to the left. Next it curves back to the right again. A moving train will zig zag through there and could uncouple while doing that. I'm thinking the turnout should be located elasewhere. Have fun!

Looks like another nice day but forecast calls for rain later today and tomorrow.

Jim- Did you get the e-mail I sent you? I see some of you were talking about cars the other day. My brothe-in-law has a '66 Ford Galaxy 500 with a 7 liter motor. It's real sharp. He got the car when his father passed away a couple of years ago.

Here's somemore pics that I want to share with everyone.

Thanks for the replies-

Cox47-for the weathering,I first wash the car in warm soapy water, rinse well and let air dry. Then I use cheap acrylic craft paint (Delta ceramcoat) black.I make a wash out of it and brush it onto one side then with a paper towel start wiping it off until I get the look I am after. I repeat this for the whole car. If your wash is too thin just add some more black. Before the black dries I use the same towel that I wiped the car down with to add some heavier black areas. You can always re-brush and re-wipe an area if it doesn't look right. Once the black is dry I then use terra cotta to simulate rust. This I dry brush onto the car.Just dip a little of the brush into the paint and then wipe off excess paint. You can also add any other colors you want. Once you are done and if it looks good spray it with dull coat. If you don't like it just take an old tooth brush and run it under warm water and remove the paint and try again.

I use a similar method for my buildings.

Hope this help.NJ Bob

Good afternoon folks:  Blood sugar's a bit high today, so I'll just have a JR Regular please Zoe.

NorthernPhil:

5997! (Sure hope I got that number right, it was from memory)
..it's from my memory too...the #s part of our phone when I was a kid. (The other part was the exchange DERwent), so although it looks as if it could be RR related, it's not really.Big Smile [:D]

Ended up loosing about 3 scale miles of ballast through that oversight!
...hope you didn't lose friends too!  Didn't anyone notice???

Thanks to all for your kind comments, this last month has been fun.

Garry:

That's some track plan Wow. Good thing you're not a G guager!
...It's got serious flaws, like the bottle-neck at that viaduct coming off the upper yard.  There's no place for trains to pass until the passing track in the upper tunnel.  I needed the only piece (down PC!) that might have done for interchange storage track.

NJBob:

when I get to building mine that it looks half as good.
...can't wait to see that Bob. If the cars and buildings you've shown us are anything to go by, it will be spectacular! Bow [bow]  Thanks for the weathering tutorial. It's filed under Trains in "My Documents"!

Lee:

Der, I see you added the "Time Saver" on your layout,
...yes, I've wanted to do that sometime ever since I read that old MR artiticle "One of my towns is a TimeSaver".  The two left hand tracks will service a pair of linked chemical plants, the short right hand one is storage, and the long one serves the Fish Oil plant. Lots of switching, but on my tod, as I get no visitors...not complaining, because running an operating session would raise my stress level.

BTW, the photo next to that one in my Photobucket album is the centerline track cleaner as a made over caboose.

Colby: I'm sharing Garry's concern about the S curve introduced by the left hand turnout for switching the mine.

I also appreciate that you have to work with what you've got.  Could you shorten the straight below the water tower, thus brining the long curve in from the edge of the table.  The inside of that curve would then be close to the turning handle of the turntable.  Do you have straight track that could swap out for some of the curved? The top end of the curve might then line up with the curved leg of the mine turnout.  I'm just eye-balling it, but the S curve is potentially trouble.

Here's a card-stock village (mainly genuine New England houses including John Quincy Adam's birthplace, that I built for an out and back traction section on my layout in BC.

Here's another part of the same layout.  All the buildings here are card except an Atlas crossing guard tower.

Jerry:  That Bobber is looking real nice. I had one on my HO layout, but couldn't get the weight/tracking right, and it ended up as a shed!

Ryan:

Der John - With all the progress on your layout when do you have time to eat, sleep, and visit the Diner?  Amazing what a little glue can do huh!
...It's time spent not watching the non TV these days! Also, I've bee's wax in my ears so as not to listen to the Siren song of any other Forum places than the Diner; and not even here when I've a project on!

A clear and still mild day today, an d Rosie-the-dog will get fed shortly in the daylight.  That's a very welcome change!

Maybe more ballasting tonight, if my spray pump repair #3 is effective.  Push fitting the nozzle didn't work, neither did crazy glue.  This time I've used epoxy.  It's a fairly slippery plastic, that's the trouble.

Anyhow, TTFN.

Evening Gang: Not much going on today. I put out hay this morning and drove the new tractor to the truck stop to fuel it up. It only took a bit over 16 gal but that cost $54+. That was at $3.33 per gal. We have to get our ag exemption back this year. I hope that Daisy the dog dosen't wake me up tonight to go out.

I see that a bunch of you are really getting some stuff done on your layouts. I really need to get at it myself.

Started the train systems and have the table done and the track laid out and about half the cork down.  for now its just a flat track.  No mountains etc just yet.

Well after the coffee I will be off laying down caulking so I can get all this cork down.

Thanks for the coffee.  catch ya around.

Der- Thanks so much for the reply and kid words. I hope that when I do get to building my layout that it will do justice to the rolling stock and structures. The only thing that might mess things up is a bad paint job on the track. That aspect of it still bothers me because there are so many ways that everyone does it that it hard to deceide which method is best. Thanks again NJ Bob

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Warm, but not unbearably so.  Breeze picked about 4:30 and it was just gorgeous out.

That was nice as we spent the entire afternoon out at the orange grove.  It's fruit as far as you can see out there.  The oranges (especially the mandarins) are unbelievably sweet right now.  Hope all you Coffee Shop patrons are continuing to enjoy the stuff the FCVN ships up there each week.

While Fran and I worked on general maintenance items, my M-I-L and F-I-L squeezed 5 gallons of juice right there in the field.  We brought that back home, along with what oranges would fit in, and it gets split up between our houses, and some gets sent over to each of the S-I-L's who live close.

No layout work nor OL's today.  But at least I had the "I was working at the orange grove" excuse to fall back on.  Wink [;)]

Johnboy - thanks for the warning.  No, we just use regular (Prestone?) antifreeze down here (obviously for corrosion protection, not for freeze protection) as DexCool isn't available.

philnrunt:  You just stand by for my report when we go to the Ft Wayne Swap! Why, I plan on buying and getting and grabbing and....well, you just wait!
Go ahead!  Since I don't have access to shows or swap meets down here, I have to live vicariously through the stories of those of you who do.  Big Smile [:D]

The Atlas forum is okay.  It's not as big as it was back in its glory days.  That long shutdown and the changing of the software (with associated problems like yours) caused a lot of people to find other forums (like I found TrainBoard).  I do look at the list of new threads each day, but only read a few and post even less.  But heck, even here on the Trains.com forums I only read a small percentage of the threads/posts.  I think that most of the major forums have a decent mix of experienced modelers, and you can find good information and good threads on them all.

Colby - congrats on getting a layout started.

Jerry:  ...Any of that Spagetti sauce left? sounds great!....
There is, oops, make that was.  I think I scarfed down the last of the leftovers for dinner tonight.  Dinner [dinner]

NJ Bob - thanks for the weathering tip.  You've certainly got the technique working well for you!

Dean the HereticSign - Welcome [#welcome]  welcome to The Coffee Shop / Diner thread (at least I don't recognize you as having been here earlier).

That's about it from down here.  Catch up with you tomorrow.

Hasta mañana

Ed

Ed-thanks for the kind words. As I mentioned in my description of how I weather my rolling stock,I use a similar method for all my structures. It's the prep work that differs.

As long as I'm here I think I'll sit a spell. I'm in the mood for something to eat, even at this hour-10:45PM. I think I'll have a BLT on rye toast, fries, cole slaw and coffee.

Not much doing in model railroad land. I just have a couple of small projects to finish. I was hoping to use Peco code83 track on my layout with the short turnouts but a luck would have it they only make the short turnouts in code100 so I guess I'm stuck using that instead of the code83. NJ Bob

Evening, Janie - guess you're taking a shift for Chloe, huh? I'll have a cup of hot cocoa, please.

Thanks!

DerJohn, what about adding a turnout and more track just after coming off the bridge, and use either a crossing or possibly single/double slip switch to get to the staging yard/programming track? See the green part I added to your drawing. My My 2 cents [2c], anyway.

Colby, on your layout - are the outside curves 18" radius, and the switches Snap Switch #4's? Trying to come up with something more in line with your suggestions and others'.

Oh yeah, I checked on my way out from work today about my appointments for tomorrow - and I don't have any(!). Smile [:)] But that'll be good, since I have couple of intakes and a small bit of other documentation to finish up. Next week is our audit, where the state MH auditors go over our records and maybe talk to some of the staff, and then try to find something to change (so they can justify their own salaries). If I get all my other docs done tomorrow, I shouldn't have anything they can fault me for (I hope...).

Okay, time to to wind it up and head for home. Finished up my cocoa while I was making the changes on DerJohn's sketch. Hope everyone gets some decent weather tomorrow and over the weekend. I've not got my Christmas decorations put away yet, so I'll be doing that at some point over the weekend. Getting it done on weekend nights hasn't worked well so far. See everyone in the morning!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
