RT, sorry to hear about your move again, but you're right - you have to be able to cover the rent and electric (and MRR) bills. Hey!  Good Morning!

The rain has finally moved out of Indiana but not for long.  Temperatures will be much cooler today with highs in the mid 40s.  This is still about 10 to 15 degrees above our normal high of 34.  Another weaker storm will approach the region on Thursday.  This will bring a good chance for more rain Thursday afternoon and night.  Right now, it appears rainfall totals should be under .50″ in most areas.  Colder air will return behind the front Thursday night and Friday.  Rain will change to snow showers by Friday morning.  The moisture will be leaving as the colder air returns so any accumulation of snow should be under an inch.  Never a dull moment in Indiana!

In more personal news, the wife walked 100 feet (assisted) yesterday!  She also skipped a couple doses of pain meds!  After the walk she took some, but thats a huge improvement!

Also, I've been honored as the team photographer for my sons basketball team!  They are using my pics for the covers of the weekly game fliers and also the yearbook.  I'm humbled!

Well, gotta go do the work thing today.  How about you?

Good Morning All,

I'll have a regular and a donut please. Model train night at the museum lsast night so we did some maintainence on the Nvisible gauge and picked up around the O gauge and added some weathered cars to the yard on the HO. A good evening all in all. Trying an 8 car passenger consist on the Npossible set up we'll see if it lasts through tonight as the N gets run more than anything.

Monday I get to go to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and pick up some donated G gage stuff for the outdoor trains we're planning. They have an extensive  layout with all scratchbuilt buildings  and it's supposed to be very impressive.  I suppose that also means I should get after the radius former I need to make for the outdoor rails. It's much easier to form curves in 1:1 scale - just spike it down as you please and trim to length.

I hope everyone got through the run of lousy weather ok and didn't have any unplanned home relocations. Lots to do today so I'd better get on with it.   CUL,   J.R.

Morning!

Scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast for me today!

We broke an all time high temp yesterday at 73° F, normal high for this time of year is in the low 50's so it feels like spring already, the bulbs are going to get confused when it freezes again in the next week or two.

Here is Today's Lunch and Dinner Specials

I heard that the Norfolk Southern F-7's and executive cars will be making a run through North Carolina this month, these are beautifully restored with resemblance to the old Southern tuxedo style, here is a link to a image of the head end of the executive business train: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=59172

Hey Rob, good luck with the cows, maybe if you put in some nice stinky cow chow for bait! I don't know the first thing about rustling bovine, so don't listen to me! But hey, there is some old stinky cheese in the back cooler; maybe they would like some of that!

Morning, Diners - how's your day going? Zoe, a glass of Ed's OJ,

some waffles (we've got plenty - anyone else want some while Zoe has the waffle iron going?) Dinner [dinner],

and some coffee to fill in any gaps left...

Laugh [(-D] Yeah, RT - that, or maybe it's closer to 10,500? Hey, Philnrunt, how much of that is train stuff? Wink [;)]

Well, I'll be working on my waffles for a bit before I head out. Looks like that storm made it through several of your backyards last night/this morning. Of course, it might turn into more snow for Colby and Dick and our Nova Scotians by the time it gets further east. Shock [:O] Nah...

Blessings on your (probably cooler) day,

Wowwww.  Jim's waffles on Jim's tab.  Chloe, I will have an order of those with my coffee before I head to work.

Maybe I will get some layout time tomorrow.  Too many work days in January.

I have climbing tonight so I may not check back in until tomorrow.

I just had to do the part of my job that I hate the most.  I had to fire a guy.  He was a decent guy, but just not a good fit for our company.

I hate having to do that.

On the other hand, I guess it's best if I hate it, huh?

Afternoon Gang: Just a quick run through.

Colby you take care of yourself. It's no fun being layed up.

RT: I'm sorry to hear that you will have to move again. Too bad about selling off your collection too. At least you don't have anything that you are really attached to.

Rob: Good Luck on loading the cows. We have a curved chute leading to our loading chute that really makes it easy.

Well I really need to get going and get to doing something productive. Mary Ann went to the hospital to see the baby so I'm home alone. Hee Hee

Good Afternoon Ya'all,

Zoe, I met your mother this morning and she said you had come in very late last night. Do you have something to tell us ??Evil [}:)]Censored [censored]

I'll squeeze in again at the counter, can't stay long today.  I'll have an egg salad sandwich with green peppers and a bowl of potatoe soup. Swish with a Dr. Pepper.Dinner [dinner]

I feel like I finaly kicked my cold (I hope), but had a bunch of tests done the last two days. Have to keep an eye on things after that internal bleed I had mid-year in 2007.  But everything looks like I should see 2009 and then some.  So thats good news.

PHILIP:   really glad to hear your wife is working at walking as diligently as she is.  Thats the secret, keep at it, but don't over do it. Also congratulations on your new "Press Photographer" position. That is a nice recognition for you.Yeah!! [yeah]

RT:  I don't like moving and fortunately I haven't had to do much of it.  But, go at it with a positive attitude, keep the spirits high, show enthusiasm and you will be surprised. You will not have to accept anything less than what you deserve and require.   Best Wishes.........

LEE:  Well at least you don't have to shovel it.  But too much rain can spell trouble as well. Hope you can handle what you get.   Maybe you could borrow Rob's rubber boots after he gets those cows loaded. He would probably even wash them off for you.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

ROB:  It is now that you try out those new steel toed rubber boots.. Traction and protection. hope the heifers are cooperative today.Cowboy [C):-)]

JERRY:   Why "matte medium" inside the caboose ?.  I don't get it.  Good find with the new work table, I'm a big proponant of re-cycling.  It's amazing what you can recycle in model railroading.

RYAN:  That great looking loco is an F-9.  Very Classy, would like to see it with all of the cars ready to run.   Do you know how the cars are painted ??

Colby: It's lousey feeling tough. Get lots of rest, drink lots of water (not soda) eat quite a bit of Yoguart and before long you'll be up to speed again.Zzz [zzz]

Jeff:  How much to ride on that "Tourist Train" of yours ?.  It is shaping up great.Wow!! [wow]

ED:  So sorry about all the warm weather, I feel so bad for you.    Yuk, Yuk Yuk...Sad [:(]  Send a little extra OJ. to Colby, he could use some  Liquid Mexican Sunshine..

Well the soup was good and the sandwich was great, better get back to some serious railroading.  Here comes the "Wobbly".

Everyone have a great day.

Colby: If you get another left-hand turnout you can make that spur double-ended so that a train can just pull straight through instead of having to back in.

Evening all,

First thing in the morning work is sending me to the local rail yards to find information on bridges in our area, yahoo!

Colby, the building in the lower right corner of the picture with the red roof; is that a brewery? I might have the same model.  Everything looks good, thanks for sharing the pictures.

RT what type of work will you be looking for?  Would you, could you, work for Uncle Sam?  If so I can steer you in the right direction on that, maybe even keep you in KY.

Jeffery, I'm jealous, I don't have any decapods in my fleet yet and here you are flaunting yours all over the diner, LOL.  Looks good. you wouldn't want to swap a pair of FP's for it would you?

The rain stopped with a minor leak in the basement.  Another project for me to do, find crack and patch it up. The winds tore my bird cage off the chimney, glad it didn't hit anyone or anything when it came down.

***Philip, CONGRATS to the wife on her accomplishment. That is great. Keep it going!

***Colby, hope you get feeling better soon. Nice layout progress there.

***Jeffrey, really neat pics today. She's a beauty and such great ground work, as usual.

THE GOOD: Heifers loaded quite smoothly with the gradual moving of panels, a soft reassuring voice and lots of cookies.

THE BAD: After instructing her to stay on the gravel and go easy on the pedal, she comes flying way over into the mud and ends up totally jack-knifed with the truck facing uphill and the trailer with cows stuck in the mud. No way she could go anywhere. Using my little JD & some fold-out snow tire thingies (have no idea what they're called), I got her straitened out heading uphill. Moved her in 3' increments. Then got behind the trailer and assisted pushing her up the hill. Then had to reconnect the front ropes to finish the job, because she again drove off the gravel. Poor girl was clueless.

More small world: Barbara's sister (the lawyer) back in 2004 had many chats with that Gary Hilton fella while taking her dog to the park. She said he seemed eccentric and was very talkative. Her dog loved him. (perhaps that was before he became a killer)

Made another hay run this evening to celebrate the heifers exodus. All the farm is at peace. :^) -Rob

Good evening ........been a while since I dropped into the Diner. Last weekend we were up in New Hampshire ( NO, not for the Primary political scene ) the MBRR sponsored a winter excursion on the Conway Scenic RR. The 1921 0-6-0 ran from the station to Sawyer River, about 30 miles into Crawford Notch in deep snow. There were 4 photo run-by stops on the trip back. I got some really nice shots and will post them here soon.

No MRR action taking place, we are taking advantage of this record breaking heat to remove all the outside decorations now that 3 feet of snow has nearly all melted.  But the end is in sight and now I can get back downstairs to the MRR room.

JIM: We may get snow on Monday, the computer model say a big one, the weathermen don't seem to think so....we shall see.

Prayers for all those in need. I also want to pass on some info, I received a book called "90 minutes in Heaven" from a friend, and I couldn't put this book down, please get it at your library, it is beyond  anything that I ever read...true story too.

Later,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Evening Gang: Nice to see you in here Dick.Don't be such a stranger.

Rob: I'm happy to hear that the heifers loaded easy, too bad the girl couldn't drive as well.

I took my diesel back over to the shop that had worked on it. I ran it last Saturday and it surged all the time. They said it will be ready tomorrow. I'll pick it up and give it a try if the temp holds. Tomorrow is hay day. I'll also have to take the tractor and get it fueled up.

Colby: That's a nice layout. You have done a great job in a small space.

Well That's about it for tonight.

Good Night All

Howdy everybody...

We went to Nashville for a couple of days and I just returned. Brother-in-law there had an experience the night before. He worked late and thought he saw something in a ditch while driving home. It was a teenage girl who had been hit by a hit/run driver and hurt seriously. Another guy stopped. Police found the right side rear view mirror on the ground. B-I-L is a hero. May have saved the poor girl's life. Last I heard police are still searching for the hit/run driver.

RT .. Your story sounds very sad. Keep your faith. You can PM me if you like.

Hoople mentioned 80 mph winds. wow! Batton down the haches Sue and hoople.

Lee ... Hope the leak stays minor.

JimCG ... Good luck with the laptop. If the replacement motherboard won't work, try a fatherboard next time.

PC ... Good to learn about Mrs. PC's progress.  It's neat about your being the official photgrapher. I know what you mean about having to fire somebody. Sorry to hear about it.

JR ... Donated G guage stuff sounds great.

Ryan .. Your assigment is to photograph the NS F-7's and post the pix in the diner. No excuses. Should you fail, we will disavow any knowledege ...........

Jerry ... you got a deal with the dumpser dive. Great!

Colby.... good layout and it will be fun for you. Jeff might is suggesting a change to a turnout. Normally, it works better to have the mainline passing through the straight part of the turnout, but don't worry if you are not able to do that. Also, don't get sick, okay?

John-boy.... I'm glad your cold is better.

Steveblackledge .... Happy New Year to you also!!!!

Rob .... It occured to me that you should have been the driver for those heifers.

DIck ... good to hear from you!!! Glad the NH trip went well. Conway scenic railroad is something I would like to visit some day.

Hello Ed .... keep that OJ flowing, please.

Paul .... hope that diesel is back in shape.

Happy Model Railroading.

Going back to winter here, as LSW and pcarrell  mentioned. Sure do wish it had stayed like it was until it got like it's sposed to be.

GMT- Working with all of those scales, going from N-visible to Gi-normous, be careful. Others have tried this, and, well.... lets just say have you ever heard of Spontaneous Human Combustion? Keep a jug of H2O with you at all times, just to be safe!Whistling [:-^]

Silverspike- There won't be any Wanted Posters sent, they all went to the Post Offices ! Amyjo's dad says he always gets a kick out of telling his friends he's going over to the jail to see his daughter. MIL just cringes when he says it, then spends the next half hour explaining "It's where she works!" to which I always add, " She means Work Release." to which I always get hit. Ahhh, tough crowd, tough crowd!    If you haven't checked your personal messages, do so, I can't send the pics until I get a mail from you. Crummy computers.

pcarrell- One of my friends was a rehab nurse at Ball Memorial, and I always remember one patient in particular he was 19 and in a motorcycle accident, and how extremely happy she was when he walked eight steps. The day he left her floor, she was in tears when she told us about it. Your wife's great efforts and great results remind me just how much we all take for granted. Congratulate her from all of us here, and tell her to keep up the fantastic work.

steveblackledge- Now I know Great Britain does holidays somewhat different than the good ol US and Canada and Mexico, but I had NO IDEA the Brit New Year started on the 9th! Either that or you guys throw some really heavy duty parties!Whistling [:-^] Thanks and Happy New Year right back to you!

Had planned to spend today taking measurements and marking on walls and doing all of that layout building preliminary work, instead spent it sealing seams on the roof. ALMOST the same thing, if I wanted to run trains on the roof. Hmmmmmm, I do have some G Gauge, do you think it would need cork roadbed to keep the noise down? Laugh [(-D]

Also got my old ('96, 201,000 plus miles, engine sounds like a diesel) Grand Cherokee running again, drove him to work tonight. Great truck, going to have to pull the right front and unstick the brake or re-pack the wheel bearings, or both, but for now, he's doing fine.

Good Evening Diners:  We're having a January thaw, and apart from a bit of wind tonight, nothing too inconvenient about the snow departing.  Foggy, but we're used to that.  Just got back from our Chamber of Commerce AGM.  Some worthwhile projects shaping up, and we are trying to get control of our port put under a Port Authority with local input, rather than the present management contract which has not been, and is not being fulfilled to our satisfaction.

I've had a break through!  I now actually like ballasting!  It's taken years, but now I've discovered out what tools work for me, I really got into the swing of things today and finished the  mid-level ballast in front of the city in one go.   Here's the progress pics.  Looking att he milling / bakery complex...

and looking from the river bridge towards the city...

Now it's back across the river to do the main line up to the upper level tunnel, and the other main down past the container dock, and around in front of the rock wall.  Those are the only parts of the layout left to be ballasted.  One small snag is that the misting pump that worked so well for me today broke.  I just hope that I can fix it.  If not, the second string one, a trombone lubricating pump, is much harder to work, and tends to shoot out drops rather than the desired fine spray.  I'm using Fergie's tip about adding India ink to the wetting water / alcohol mix to get instant weathering of the ballast. Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob:  I guess the "Cow God would be the One who said "The cattle on 1000 hills are mine"! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  You got them loaded OK, but I guess we forgot to cover the driver!!!Angel [angel] Glad you were able to recover things (twice?)

***Der, in your photo (below) it looks like a pretty good grade? Is it, or is it just a trick of the camera? Curious.  -Rob

....It's a bit of a down grade, no more than 1½%, then it's flat on the sceniced part.  So, trick of the camera?

NJBob:

I especially like the grade you put in.
...thanks.  Pretty much the whole layout is a grade, as (see track plan in my answer to Sue, below) it goes from 0 to 8½" over the course of the run around the room.  The mid level (just ballasted) is at 4½" and dead flat at he city portion.  The ruling grade is meant to be 1½%, but I think it averages that overall with some spots worse, but nothing over 2%.

Sue:

That must be a large room.
...not huge by any means. Don't forget it's Normal Scale.  Here's the track plan. The dots are on 12" centres.

First of all, the upper level, that I've shown being ballasted recently.

Then the middle level, the left hand portion of which was ballasted today.

finally, the lower level, the yard section fits under the upper level yard.

I can't imagine how long it would take if one was working alone.
...I've been at this 8 years or so, but not continuously!  Like Ed, (and JR?....) I work in spurts of enthusiasm, or not.

I got my cowboys and horses primered
...

Ryan:

... that roundtable is shaping up nicely!
...you don't know the half!  I knocked the turntable bridge arch off when I was doing the ballast. Fortunately it glued back together again with no trouble.

Great news PC, seems like she is making great strides in progress! And congrats on being given the role of the team photographer for the school media coverage.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]  (and PC, you're right about it being best to not like firing people...but you knew that....Big Smile [:D]

Terry:

Any one else use the Centerline?
...yes, the N Scale one, with an old caboose shell over it, and modified to take a tube for dropping cleaner onto the roller.  Tying the handi-wipe onto the roller is the worst part for me.  Thanks for the site, I'm looking at possibly getting a different one (CMX looks very good, or perhaps Aztec, but I don't know which one to go for.) I'd keep the Centerline to add clipper oil after the track's clean.

RT: back!  Sorry to hear that you may have to move again.  I hope that the job situation improves for you.  Getting rid of everything and starting over makes sense if you look at what moving companies charge.

CapeJim:

is a 'piece of cake,' actually. - No, PC, I did not say the P-word... )
...subliminals excluded?  Take a good look at the word "piece" Whistling [:-^]

and right now I'm in science class and by the open window I can hear the train horn and the engine's engine rumbling. it a sweltering 55 degrees here in Maine.

Hey Heartland- Yeah, tomorrow is a Dr's appointment, so nothing will get done then either, but hopefully on my days off-Fri and Sat, after I snooze the day away, I'll at least get the room measurements taken, and then I can start serious planning.

Amyjo pointed out the cover of the last MR and said "this is what i want to see in the hobby room!" I told her she had better get to building, because my switching layout of Muncie, In.  wasn't going to have a single mountain on it! I think if I built a 4x8 loop with styrofoam Lionel mountains on it, she would be happy, she really wants me to build SOMETHING!

Can't say I disagree with her all that much!  I just want to see some trains running!

You take care, we wii keep everyone posted as to how this goes. And, with Ajo's help, we might even be able to post pics, like all of the rest of you do!

And now, after posting this, I see der has posted some pics of his bakery-mill, and they are very impressive! Good job, 5997! (Sure hope I got that number right, it was from memory)

Looks like it's coming along fine, and it's good to hear you overcame your ballasta-phobia. I remember when I first tried to ballast, it was in N scale, and I can't even begin to describe how horrible it looked. I had never heard of John's Better Wetter, or adding alcohol or detergent, and those da**ed little rocks flowed EVERYWHERE! Oh, and just some friendly advice, don't throw a party and leave black N scale ballast sitting out in a bowl, people put it on their sandwiches! No joke, actually happened back in 1974. Ended up loosing about 3 scale miles of ballast through that oversight!

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Made even more beautiful because I laid around and hardly did anything all day.  Okay, not exactly nothing, it just seemed that way.

I did spend a good part of the morning slaving over a hot stove Chef [C=:-)]  making my world famous spaghetti sauce (btw, thanks to Ryan for the original recipe  Thumbs Up [tup] ).  Okay, so it's not exactly world famous, but Fran and Junior like it.  Well, Fran likes it.  Junior likes the flavor, but spends half his time picking anything that even remotely resembles a vegetable (bell pepper pieces, mushroom, olive, etc) out of his sauce.  Laugh [(-D]

And I did squeeze in an O.N. (obligatory nap).  Zzz [zzz]  "O.R.F." regs are very clear on the absolute requirement to take at least one nap each day.  I'm just trying not to lose my card.

RT - tough break on the job situation.  Hope you find a way to work things out.

Philnrunt - okay, based on your alibi (aka excuse) I'll let you off with only a "Warning Tsket" this time.  But you might want to think about becoming a "ORFit" (an Old Retired Fart in training).  You need to work your way into retirement slowly.  You don't just stop working one day and then start figuring out how to fill your time.  Starting with small cat naps now can be a useful technique for moving on to bigger and better things.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Our car is also a '96, just a Blazer.  About 150,000 miles and still runs well.  Going to try to get a couple more years out of it before I have to spring for a new one (or a newer used one).

PC - I see you had a fun thread over on the Atlas forum.......  Some people just have to complain about everything.

That's about it from down here.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Yeah, one guy seems to have singled me out from the heard and now he's got the townsfolk gathering pitchforks and torches.  It's not even my thread!  I just answered the question!  You know what though?  I'll bet more people have clicked on the link today then have done for the last 6 months!  If just one person listens, it's all worth it!  In the meantime, if the moderators ask me to remove it, I will (they asked me to remove my signature quote here and I did).  But there's not one thing against it in the rules (turns out, there was here and I just missed it.....my eyes kind of glaze over and drool forms in the corners of my mouth when I see a big list of rules, ya know?).  I almost answered your post with an "Amen" on the tender drive, but I thought that might be pushing it.

And BTW, what were you doing over there?  I saw you!  You slumming or something? Wink [;)]
