Ack...
Speaking of computer problems... The Gateway laptop I've been using to write my PhD dissertation broke. I mean it broke. The metal hinge on the left side of the screen broke when I opened it this morning here in the lab. The broken hinge then peeled up part of the keyboard cover.
It still works, of course (I'm on it now). But it's going to cost me $225 to get it fixed at Gateway. That's $225 I don't exactly have lying between the couch cushions this time of year. Dang.
Of course these things never happen during the warranty period.
This afternoon I'll need to do a full backup of this system. I have a 500 GB external drive I've been using for my research data; there's enough room to backup all of my papers and graphics too.
Not what I was hoping to deal with today.

Trackside Diners: A cold one here, but not as horribly windy as forecast, so the wind chill isn't as bad as we had thought it might have been. Sunny and clear, which is good as we are off to town this p.m., as soon as we've rescued Kris' mom from the Thursday day clinic (It's her not-such-good-company-as-the-other week-is week) after lunch.
Dee Dee: Welcome! Glad to have you aboard. Virtually anything you desire is on the menu, and our kindly and efficient staff will be only too pleased to fill your order. (But then Lee has doubtless filled you in on all that )
Garry:
Der John..... yesterday you said you went to Canada in 1967. Where are you from?
Greg: back! Glad you made it in. Now gang, who's heard from Noah lately?
Mitch: So that's your pin oak? Our oaks keep their leaves pretty much all winter. Not that there are many on the island here, but there are a few small ones here and there. I don't know the exact variety. A G Scale track around your tree would be great, but raise it a bit so the neighbours can enjoy it too!
Johnboy: Looks like the cold you sent has finally got here!
Jonathan: Your loss of radiator reminds me I've got to get some card to block the radiators in the van and the car. It took a while to warm up the van this morning for my MIL.

A very big to all for the advice on Norton etc. Kris' computer is now working so well that we are spared it's repair or replacement, by the look of it. I may yet change the anti-virus from our ISP's to the one that I now have working on my machine. I've also got some programs to help speed up the inner workings of my PC, and done some maintenance that should have been a regular item. Much happier campers on Sober Island!
Some small mrr progress in all this. I've begun to fill in the ground cover across the river, on the last remaining bit of blue desert before I tackle the whole of my upper level yards area. (The tracks are not even painted there yet. Only about 2 weeks of effective time left before New Year...will the 2007 resolution be kept?...await further bulletins, but don't make a book on this one!
Got to go. TTFN.

Good afternoon everyone, remember me? I know, it's been forever since I posted last but I saw PC's post about the Mennonites and just had to chip in.
I grew up right next door to a Mennonite church and attended Sunday school and church there for years. My mother still attends church there even though we are not Mennonites. If the Mennonite folks in Indiana are anything like the ones here, you won't meet a nicer group of people. They are among the precious few who truly live their faith. The ministers at the church I attended visited with our family regularly, even my aunts who lived nearby and didn't attend the church. Everyone was made welcome there no matter their beliefs. The church has a community picnic every summer and you see every type of person there from old order Amish to folks riding in on Harley motorcycles. It was kind of funny to see an elderly Amish gentleman checking out the motorcyle with the guy that rode in on it. Their services aren't much different form most other Christian faiths they just some slightly different beliefs in the way people should dress and behave. I suspect you will rather enjoy your visit.
Yeah, I think I'll take the opportunity to go see the Mennonites. Supposed to be a snowstorm this weekend and they're way out in the country, so I might wait and go the following weekend (weekend before Christmas.....Ooooo, that'd be cool!). We'll see!
Later all!
Hello Attaboy and Phillip. Let us know if Mennonites have Lionel trains under their Christmas trees.
Reminds me for some reason..... has anyone seen old photos of rolling churches that were converted from old passenger cars and once traveled in lightly populated areas?
Hey, PC - thanks for posting the photo of your Christmas lawn decorations!

Evening Gang: I went into town by myself and got Mary Ann's Christmas present or at least one of them. I payed for it out of my train money so she won't get a clue from the credit card. I also went by and talked to my doctor. The more I thought about it the less I liked the dr that I had seen about the stress test. He didn't really set down and talk to me about what he saw in the EKG. I'm going for another one with another doctor. We're still digging through the Part D business. A friend of ours who is a pharmisist ran our drug lists through the computer and came up with 3 good choices. It looks like Mary Ann's drugs will run around $5000 a year with premiums. It really costs to get old.
I went out to Clark Garden and visited with Mr. Clark. He's has some ideas for a 7.5 inch gauge railroad that we will look at after the holidays. I also ordred the Milwaukee Road Milwaukee depot kit with 2 extra train sheds from Walthers. It will take the 2 extra to get a decent looking train shed. Actually from prototype photos I estimate it will take 5 but I'll try with 2.
Garry I talked to Terry and he would like the drawings. If you will drop me a line with the cost and shipping I'll get you a check in the mail.
Dave the locomotive is looking good. I'm sorry to hear that your lap top broke. At least you didn't loose the data.
Well I think that I'll head for bed.

Evening, Chloe - Some chicken noodle soup (big bowl of it),
and a cup of hot cocoa, please, too.
Thanks!
Good to see some familiar Diners dropping by. back, Attaboy! I like that "Amish Lite", especially about the Amish guy checking out the Harley...
Garry, that was neat about those railroad chapel cars - thanks for posting that!
Dave V., nice job on the M1 (so far). And how's the computer backup coming along? Do you have another computer you can use while the laptop is in the shop? Very good that you didn't lose your thesis work!
Jeff, I can understand what you;re saying on upgrading to your level of quality. Even before I was reading your post, I was wondering how much memory (for one thing) the low cost computers come with nowadays...
So Paul, are the Milwaukee Road buildings for your layout or the garden one? I'm confused... I'm thinking you said earlier that the Clark Garden was 7.5" scale, right? Do you have a good hiding place for Mary Ann's gift until Christmas, by the way?
Time to finish up my soup and cocoa. Hope everyone else doesn't have a code in da noz...
Blessings and prayers,
Good evening diners! I'll have some of hot chocolate please Chloe.
Well the home town is certainly living up to its nick-name Winterpeg. Had a small blizzard come through this morning and the forecast tomorrow is for a windchill of -40. Mind you it is a dry cold and it will be sunny. I expect the sun dogs will be out too. Despite the blizzard I took the car in for an oil change today and a new battery later plus front rotors and pads I was ready to go.I guess I shouldn't have asked them to test the battery. Talk about setting myself up but I was worried about it as it was nearly 8 years old and in this climate a good battery is a bit of an essential.
Jeff, Glad to hear your foot is healing up and congrats on the new loco! Does this mean you are going to steam and CN at that! Isn't it amazing that an engine of that size can be engineered to go around 18" curves without apparent protest. I have one of those too and am impressed with how it operates.
The comments on the Mennonite community are certainly true. There is a large Mennonite charitable organization here called the Mennonite Central Committee that does an amazing job helping those in need around the world.
Not much happening on the layout except that I altered part of my service yard. Moved a couple of sidings which helped the operation and also solved a problem I had with roadways, as in too many. That is one advantage of sectional track. It is easy to change for those of us not good at doing track plans.
Hope your cold is better soon Jim. Chicken soup is just the ticket. A couple of years ago I had pneumonia and for almost a month it was my mother in laws homemade chicken soup that kept me alive. Saw an ad once in a New York newspaper that said for a small fee a Jewish grandmother would deliver it. It was called a Bobba-gram.
Well that's all for now,
CN Charlie
Good Morning from Tipton IN !

Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Good Morning All,
Late stopping by this morning as I needed to get some things ready for the crew this morning. We ended up with about 8" total snow accumulation and no power outages so that was pretty good. The city crew did a great job on the roads overnight and things were pretty clear this am.
No MRR to report as i had drama with the thermostat at home last night but new batteries on the backup power seem to have done the trick (milivolt, thermo couple single pipe steam is really a joy after dealing with fuel injection harnesses and CPU's on modern race cars).
Dave - the loco project is coming along nicely for you. Much more ambitious than anything I'd tackle especially with these old tired eyes.
Hope those on the mend are doing well and the rest with issues are finding some peace and progress. This is a stressful time of year to begin with and dealing with additional issues can really get to you. There is solace in prayer and we're always here to lend a sympathtic ear if you need a place to go. Which is my cue to get back to it - lots to do today. CUL, J.R.
Good morning diners. Any way to get eggs benedict and a thermos of coffee?
I started packing away my train stuff last night. I was just going to do part of it, then finish later. Well, I started and couldn't stop. I have it torn down to the plywood and supports. The garbage man is going to be busy this week! I tried to package my supplies in a way that I could work out of a storage tub. When I continue modeling in the future, I want easy access to my old supplies.
We are about to embark on a mysterious adventure. I get to re-plan my life. Where we live, what we live in, what I do, what we spend money on. I even get to start my layout from scratch. There are so many possibilities, it's making my head spin. I can totally rethink how I want to build my big and miniature world. Scary yet exciting!
I hope everyone has a great day!
Mornin' all!
Well, the weather guesser has changed his mind. He was saying snow this weekend to the tune of 4-6". Now he's upped that to 6-10". Now we're cookin'! We already have winter storm watches in effect, and it's not even supposed to start for another 24hrs.
It's all good though....I'll be holed up doing schoolwork this weekend.
So whats up with you today?
