I learned to fly the computer planes before I could drive.  Although back in those days, things were less complex for the flight simulators.  I mean, it was 1992 when I was the whole of ten. Of course, if I were to time travel to back then and tell 10 year old me something like "just be sure you're starting your descent at the CIP transition because you'll be cleared to cross GRACE at 5000 before you're vectored direct to the EWC VOR to begin your RNAV approach to runway 8" my head would explode.  But tool around in an F-18 or something, hey I could do that well enough.  Put me in a real one and I'd look like this guy:

I remember doing the Pinewood Derby three times.  My first one was pretty lousy in every way.  The second was also not so great but won third place in show.  But the third one, well, it won races but I eventually got eliminated (my brother, though, one first place and got to go to some sort of regional derby).  I, however, managed to get first place in show, despite an incredibly simple design.  I had made the racer in the form of a bobsled.  It was likely the most aerodynamic one in the derby, but apparently that's not really that important with such small vehicles and short runs.

 PC -

I remember doing those during my days as a Scout. My dad, uncle and I would all gather in the basement at my parents house for a evening, and cut out the design and add the extra weight (a melted nickel I think is what we used) and pour it into 2 small holes we'd drilled into the bottom, between each set of wheels. Best to do the drilling before you start cutting so as to not ruin the sides too much. Let us know how it came out and how he did in the race(s)!

Enjoy!

Howdy,

Last night we had some bitter cold winds and power kept going out, right now we are at a brisk 16F.

I cut the pavement expansion joints last night for my road and put a coat of dark grey down for the main street and a light powder grey on the sidewalks.  I'm using project board for the road and evergreen sidewalk sheets for the sidewalks.  I laid about 9' of cork roadbed on the downtown module for the 3 mains and a passing track for the passenger station and a short spur for the REA building. That accounts for 95% of the real estate on the 36" x 48" module.

Compared to what I used to do, that's not detailed. That's just stuck down and grass sprinkled on. I used to build very realistic dioramas and layouts that would make the veiwer think they could just walk into them. But to all things there must be an ending.

Any thoughts on making it one big urban area?  I think the scenery might work better that way, but then what do I know.  I'm one of those N scalers!

I did them in scouts too, but that was eons ago.  I hadn't thought about polishing the axles.  Hmmmm............

Morning folks!

Got to below freezing again last night, just when I thought that was all over....

I'll have a tall glass of Ed's OJ this morning!

Yesterday was full of excitement running errands with Ben:

Truck did not pass the annual inspection, so now I need to get that rear-view mirror put back up on the windshield. Just wish it would stop falling off, that adhesive only seems to work for about 4-5 months.

Then I took Ben to Best Buy so he could get the Flight Simulator 2004 for the XP PC, seems he wants to learn to fly before he learns to drive. Any who, I buy a bag of corn nuts for a quick snack and then I chipped a tooth. Ouch! So, now I already have a dentist appointment lined up anyway on the 29th, guess I ought to let them know what to expect when I show up.

Spent about 4 hours in the train room yesterday and worked on the roundhouse roof, installed some new windows that I printed out on transparency film. I created the windows using Excel spreadsheet program on the PC to make the frames. I also worked on some details and weathering a new water tower I bought last week.

Hey Garry and Jim, we might have raised the culinary standards a bit in the past few days, but this is still the same casual Diner I have come to know over the years. But, hey, if you want to wear a tie you will not be refused any service at all...

Jeff thanks for the night light shots again! You coulda fooled me that you can't detail anymore, that shed is great!

Jerry sounds like you had a good time at the show!

John Powell and speaking of tax refunds, we aren't getting one this year, so April 15th will be the filing day for us. Guess I need to have more $$$ taken out of my pay check. Yep, you got a keeper there; I just saw some video of Steamtown on PBS last night.

Lee that is quite a procedure for turning aluminum into chrome!

Rob you up late/early again? Sounds like you got half the equation taken care of with the pond water level rising, now Spring needs to happen sooner than later. We finally got about 4" rain over the past week, but still only have about 120 day supply of water for the area.

Jim the track plan really looks great and you solved that problem with the passing tracks!

Morning all!

It's a brisk 9 degrees out there this morning.  Throw in the wind chill and it's basically -11.  Yeah, that'll get your attention!  Walked out of the house this morning with damp hair and by the time I got to the car (10 or 20 steps) my hair was frozen.  Got the coffee brewing here now though.

Well, my son is still selling those pizzas.  He's sold a ton of then so far.  He has to turn in his sales on Saturday, so he's knocking it out.

He's also decided to do the pinewood derby at our church.  He got the kit last Saturday night and we're going to start carving tonight I think.  I have to find out what the rules are as far as adding weight as he'd like to be as competetive as possible without breaking any rules.  I figured we'd go with some graphite on the axles and such too.  And if any of you have any speed secrets for these things, we're all ears!

Oh well, I'm outta here!

Later!

Jim, I meant to tell you the other day, that is a really nice looking plan you have going there.  It's a good use of space and the track arrangements are well thought out.

Tall cool glass of water, please & thanks!

***JP, sounds like a great gal you have there. Definitely a keeper!

***Paul, sounds like a great day to me. Moving dirt is fun. The other day (ahead of the rain) I dug two new burn & burry holes at the edge of the backyard. Not only functional, but makes for good stress relief, too. If you were my neighbor, I would have offered to help move those mounds of dirt. Cool [8D]

***CN Charlie, I sure don't envy your temps. Yikes!

Going to fix up the old cabin with left-over building supplies from the new studio/house. Will be a bit of work, but nothing major is required. A little sheetrock and one pipe to the upstairs is pretty much it. Oh, and a bit of paint. Still cleaning up over there a little each night...it's a mess. Once done, we will look at renting it out.

Good night all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

And speaking of freezing, CN Charlie, that's fairly warm for up your way, I'd say. What point in the spring do things usually start to thaw out enough for streams and rivers to run again?

Hello everybody,

That Ryan is just terrific. His menus have converted the diner from the local beanery into a five star restaurant. Elliott's will have to hire a Maitre D'. Next thing you know there will be a dress code. ........ Chef [C=:-)] ...(kiddin', Ryan, Kiddin'.........appreciate the menus.)

I'm moving right along with scenery on the layout.  We have our local model railroad get-together this thursday, and I need to get this section completed before the guys arrive.

Jerry. It's good to learn you could get to the train show. Gald you got some good stuff.

Good Evening Fellow Diners!

I tried to drop in during the day over this past long weekend but never seemed to manage it. Always something to do and little of it RR related but I did get to run some trains. I did a short session with CPR equipment and then due to the magic that is model railroading, I transformed the trackage into CNR as never the twain shall meet.

On Saturday we had a heat wave here as it got up to -2C so we nearly broke the freezing barrier! I actually saw some water running down the gutter. But then it is back down to -30 tonight with windchill warnings and a long range of -20 highs for most of the week. That is decidedly below normal as we should be around -7C at this time of year. It is getting depressing.

I just thought I'd stop in while waiting for my wife to finish her cooking class. Then I get to hear from her about all the great food they prepared and ate. Lucky me. It's not all bad as she did make a couple of the dishes from last week's class- a Risotto and a Tarte Tatan. To make the Risotto she had to make a stock that involved cooking a chicken, onions, etc. for 4 hours. I'm sure Ryan can relate. No wonder meals cost a lot at a good restaurant. The work that goes into creating the dishes is really amazing.

Well I expect to get the pick-up call any minute now so I'll sign off and say good night.

CN Charlie

Evening Gang: It's been a busy day. John, Micheal and I hauled dirt all day. We got one pile moved and got a good start on the other. We did stop for lunch mainly because the battery on my dump trailer ran down. We went to the house and put the charger on and went in to get lunch. After that we spent another couple of hours hauling.

Right now I'm worn out. John and Micheal are going to give me a hand raising the layout if I get the beer, piza and munchies. Good cheap help is hard to find. Has anyone prised beer and piza lately?

Well I'm going to bed.

Good Night All

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Never got above the low 80's today, and mostly cloudy, so the sun didn't make things too uncomfortable.  We actually turned off the a/c last night and it looks like we'll get through tomorrow without it too.  Thumbs Up [tup]  There's a chance we'll get a bit of rain either tonight or tomorrow.  We could use some.  It's not too dry but this is an agricultural area, so regular rainfall is important.

We took advantage of the nice weather to head out to the orange grove and pick some fruit this afternoon.  Today we were cutting oranges of the "Monica" variety.  These are probably our best eating oranges.  Unfortunately this year was a bad year for this variety over the whole region, and the crop is much less than normal.  But we still have enough for the family and to keep the Coffee Shop supplied.  Don't worry.  Wink [;)]

Kept "Little Mo" going today and finished painting the ties in the small section of the layout that I'm working on.  Man I'll tell you, it's a good thing that I have a small layout and virtually unlimited time.  Brush painting ties after track installation is just a bit time consuming.  I still have to go back tomorrow and drybrush some gray on top to give them more of a faded look.  Then it will be onward to try and paint the sides of the rail.  That's going to be a real pain.

Ryan - Shrimp Veracruz?  Sounds familiar..... Big Smile [:D]

Jerry - glad to hear that you made it to the Mattoon show.  Even better to hear that you found some stuff to pick up.  I miss not being able to get to shows.  They had one in Houston this past weekend.

That's about it from down here.  I'll catch up with you tomorrow.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Hi again, Zoe - I'll have that salmon now, please, and a Dr. Pepper. Thanks, Flashwave

Jeff, I meant the station (with the early morning pic) that you most recently posted. I thought that was a kitbashed RR station/office; my bad, if that was the gas station. Oops [oops]

Hi, JP! I just meant that I added a bookmark to the topic Flashwave had posted in here. Once I went by and looked at it, yeah, it would've been quicker just to print out. Got ahead of myself there. Hope you have some TRAIN funds left over after the car stuff. Yeah!! [yeah]

Sunny day today here, and already up to 43 F (which I think is higher than predicted).  Not quite at Ed's paradise levels yet, though.Cool [8D]

Flashwave, I went back and looked, and it was Johnboy who posted about the Grand Central 'freeze' prank. You should go check it out - kinda funny.Laugh [(-D]

I'll be working on my salmon over at the window booth for a while. Dinner [dinner]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

That is wild.

***Hoople, can you do a head-on with two sets of several SD90MACs (or similar locos) at full speed, meeting inside an industrial complex? Pirate [oX)]

ES44s at 74 MPH... I dunno. I'd have to program one of them to be an AI train, becuase I can't drive two at once. Hopefully it will work without signals.

You guys are lucky in here.  Over in the Trains General Discussion forum we were told our Diner was too big at 96 pages and had to start a new one.

Yeah, we've had to do that multiple times.  We started two just last year!  Yeah, we're blabbermouths (if you all want to opt out of that, I'll take the blame).
