Even the rear could get some blue paint...

I was thinking that too, maybe some Chevrons. A big rear nose of Blue Wouldn't look right, I have done that before and it doesn't look super nice.

Or just a thin line of blue around the long hood, just to break the ice. It would look fine on the rear too. Maybe?

Yep. Maybe we're getting too complicated. Would that be hard to do? I don't know how, decals?

WCfan, where'd you find those head-on drawings? What's going on the nose is either A)a blue circle w/ a white palmetto silhoute (however that's spelled) or B) A blue palmetto tree. I'll google BN White Face Scheme.

EDIT: Reading the next page, I now see what you're saying. I wanted to keep this really clean and neat. Might add that blue stripe, though.

EDIT 2: Here's the SD40-2 w/ a blue palmetto tree on the front and the blue stripe. Might also make front of cab blue like the BN white-face scheme.

The front View I got my Mr. Eby, the guy does the drawings I post.

Maybe you can do 2 schemes. A Blue Face and a normal one. I would also recommend Painting the Trucks and Fuel tank Black, Silver, or Grey. Yes RRs can paint there trucks a color, but IMHO it looks kind of weird. Other wise the paint scheme in a whole is nice. I would also Ditch the stripe. The Tree on the back balances it.

EDIT:

Ok so the WIN hasn't died, I'm just letting it Run. Basically WIN bought 4 Ex ATSF SD45-2s from NREX, 4213 has gotten replaced with one of the SD45-2s. aka SD40-3s.

4213 and 4220 have Been Painted. 4218, and 4219, along with 4214, and 4215 are unrepainted.

4220 has been called the City of Chicago. They named her this because all of the SD40-3s work in Transfer Service in Chicago for there High Horse Power.

This is also an older locomotive, 4210, the WINs 10 anniversary, one ion the few non-DB SD40-2s.

This is the WINs First Anniversary SD40. Now she is a pretty tattered locomotive.

I'm gonna try blue, and if I don't like it, it'll probably become black. Yeah, I think on my layout though, most would be normal all white because it's a branch line w/ a small yard (prototype for yard is upstairs on my 4x8, it's 7'xabout a foot or 2. Pics in a few.

GG!

Did you know about this? I don't even know if it's your area or not, but...

My commuter railroad in Montreal is getting 6 engines and two trainsets from NJT for long term lease!

Were getting the rebuilt Arrows...

and some GP40's, the cowl ones I think.

and some F40CAT's.

Should make it a bit more interesting now...

GP9's, F59's, F40's, F40CAT's, GP40's... all on a commuter line!

I'm gone for 2 days and it turns to this?!

Ugh, I've been on trains 13.5 hours out of the past 48 hours...

Sawyer, a shortline nearby has covered the grills and above black. If you were to make the top half of the unit blue like so...

http://photos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo=200708261622137621.jpg That may look good in blue on your loco...

I got a package from walthers today... need to run to the hardware store tomorrow and pick up some alcohol... The primer was a little thick, and I want the best for the unit Tongue [:P]

Still waiting on the dull-cote and plastic putty to arrive via standard mail.

Good luck on the SDL39 Jordan, as for the GP50, I'm too tired to think in depth on a kitbash.

The cowl units? You mean like the first unit in this video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1QAsujp380
That one's owned by Metro-North (another commuter railroad serving mostly North of NYC) but I'm pretty sure NJT has some too.

Yep!

After a re-review of the document, we might get both kinds of GP40FH-2's:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=244563&nseq=2

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=241653&nseq=22

There is only 4 active cowl units left, kinda interesting!

And the F40PH-2CAT's:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=222114&nseq=8

And the rebuild MU's, the Arrow's:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=237874&nseq=0

These things are in storage somewhere, and have not seen service as commuter cars yet. I don't know if they were earlier versions or not, but apparently, they were in service for 10 years before they crapped out and were rebuilt into coaches.

Here's what I've been up to the past few weeks:

roundy-rounder moutain layout:

The mountains are made w/ pink foam, blue foam, and styrofoam glued together w/ hot glue. The foam will be covered w/ plaster cloth.

And here's the prototype of my the yard I'll be putting in on my big layout:

Since this will only be servicing 2 locomotives on my next layout, I moved locomotive servicing to the other end of the A/D track and put it on one long track (an H-15-44 and a medium road switcher can't use a whole lot of fuel, right?). The gP30 is parked in what was locomotive servicing. I've almost finished ballasting, and still have to wire it (atlas terminal rail joiners).

And right now I'm bidding on a GP35 on ebay. if I lose it (and I'm not opursuing it that hard), I'll get some plaster cloth and terminal rail joiners for my current layouts.

I love those flared-radiator GP40Ps! I got really good video of one of those throttling up...yay turbo-charged EMDs! That was one of the only times I remember being aware of the engine noise other than just...noise. You can hear it at 8:10 in the video posted above.

The sound is amazing Ty! Wow, can't wait till they get here!

That will be in December, and they might not be on the road yet at that time.

They'll need paint and FRENCH lettering everywhere!

Shock [:O] You should hang around SD40-2s and listen more often. The SD40-2s have a nice rumble, but a SD45, much deeper. Should check out this video, has to be the best SD40-2 sound I have heard. Went from notch 1-notch 8 in a flash.

BTW: Sawyer, layout looks good.

Thanks WCfan.

Inspired by looking at a few railroads around SC on the web and a map of SC RR lines, my RR is now a 44.something mile shortline connecting Aiken and Edgefield. It's two main locomotives are a GP9 (road switcher) and an H-15-44 (yard switcher). it also has a small leasing fleet, mainly GP30s through GP40s, but a few U23Bs, MP15s, 2 SD39Qs (WC 2500, a Southern Rwy. high hood unit), and several GP38-2s. Also has a frieght car leasing fleet. I might make a small shelf layout showing their leasing yard on the other side of Aiken. Here's the paint scheme:

Sawyer; you could seriously write a book about your different freelanced railroads!

WCFan: Love that SD40-2 rumble. I realize now that I can only hear the rumble while a slow speeds; I also noticed it on this standard GP38 (no Dash 2!Smile [:)]) in Palmer around 3:00 in this one: EDIT: Nice smoke at 3:38 (excuse the sound of the lens cap banging against the camera...)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYwDLZIZbMY

Most of the trains I see are at speed, so I don't notice the individual sounds, as it's mixed with the clickity-clack. I'm now going back and re-watching all my vids to get some throttle sound. I'm trying to see if I have any good video of that M&E Alco that doesn't have my cousins talking in the background... Whistling [:-^]

Jordan,

I found three articles on what seems to be building a SDL39 in HO. I'll get more info on Saturday.

And secondly, I was doing more reading and I found that you could use a Atlas RSD-4/5/12 frame as a starting point.

  1. The frame is short.
  2. They are designed for 6 axle's.
  3. And the axle spacing is almost perfect for the SDL39.

So you can plop your shell onto this frame hopefully...

http://trainiax.net/drawings/cd/cd-cmalcorsd12.gif

http://trainiax.net/drawings/cd/cd-rkemdsdl39.gif

Now what to do about the fuel tank? I guess just replace it? But then you'd have to mill it off, oh, so much work!

I never said anything. You should probably stick to your plan...

I hope I helped a bit...

... Its hard to beat 2 C636's, and a C630 charging up grade with a 32 car train... The sound is amazing...

WRS' Impack's are getting paint... 2 are wearing the old black, 1 is in the shortlived "Blood-Dip" with an entirely red car, and 5 are in the new scheme of a red trailer hitch, and red on another portion of the car(too hard to explain). They are supposed to be decalled later tonight. WRS 1751 was stripped further to remove the old primer exposing the original Santa Fe paint beneath. 1751 needs to have the horn, bell, and 1 ditch light reattached...

Just to stir things up a little...

What kind of modeler do you consider yourself?

For me I don't think there is a word for it. I'm a little arm charish, and a little collecter, and even a little operator. I consider myself as one, that given a picture, can recreate an entire scene, or piece of equipment, but am not as interested in having a huge layout, as I am on working on a diorama or piece of equipment. I still want a layout, but right now only a 5x10ish so I can focus on specific area's, or change out locomotives from a display case(I have a nice list of stuff to model).

Roundy-rounder scenery builder pretty much sums up me, because that's what I love to do. I might enjoy switching (never had good enough turnouts for it), and not enough money for a collector (though I do have 4 engines as of now [had 3 until the ebay action for a NW GP35 ended a few minutes ago]). I sorta like building mini layouts as well (takes less time, and they still work great). I've got three: a 2 ft.x 2.5 ft. oval w/ two sidings, a mountain one w/ a STEEP grade (I'd bet over 4 % in one mountain), and a 7 ft. x 18in. yard.

I like the little extra details, and the behind the scenes stuff, like electronics, making your models come to life I guess...

Yeah, I could spend months perfecting a specific scene, or locomotive... It took me half an hour trying to get the decals to look as good as they were going to look on the WRS car. I like detailing and decalling locomotives a lot, but even more I like making a stage replicating the real thing. Last I checked I was working on a diorama of West Chelmsford Mass. I know where I want each tree...
