I bought ten gallons (37.854L) of what is known as "off road diesel" around here. There's no highway tax added and the fuel is dyed purple. It plugged up my fuel filter within an hour of filling the tank of the tractor. Not worth the savings.
A rather cool but sunny Saturday here. At 0400 I have to get back to the Cleveland Amtrak station to pick up granddaughter and son-in-law.

There is very little damage considering the massive quantity of model supplies I had stored.
Most of the damage was to a collection of structures I had salvaged off of local modeler's layouts for 20+ years to use on my next layout. This was a tragic and irreplaceable loss. I was kind of the caretaker of what was left of these great layouts, and now it is lost.
Brass locomotives: 100% OK
Fleet of nonsense: 100% OK
Passenger car kits: 100% OK
Freight car kits: 100% OK
The structure kits mostly had damaged boxes. My Magnuson and Lunde kits were the worst, but the resin wall castings are all 100% OK. That is what really matters in these kits. No real loss there.
I have a habit of putting kit contents in zip-lock bags after I inspect them when new. This turned out to be a real great idea.

drgwcsHad water get in a storage unit once and wiped out a lot of books and NG Gazettes and my copy of Up Clear Creek on the narrow gage plus about three boxes of theological books plus damaged other stuff. We did not realize until it was badly molded. I feel your pain.
I lost thousands of photographs to water damage 25 years ago when the A/C unit is our duplex failed and leaked water into a closet. That was a much bigger loss than this was.

Shame about the buildings that were other modelers legacies but good most all stuff made it through. I had several of my late Dad's books that were destroyed. One that was apparently destroyed was one of my favorites. I did buy a replacement copy but it wasn't the same. Then when we moved here I found his book much to my surprise.. Apparently I had the dust jacket on another book but never figured out what was destroyed (it was all stuck together)
Good thing you bagged the wood kits or they likely would have suffered the same fate as the other structures. When our storage unit took on water there was a wood dollhouse that my wife had as well as a 1/12 general store that I scratchbuilt the shell for and she detailed that absorbed the moisture and molded beyond salvage. Thin wood parts seem to wick up the moisture.

Good morning everyone. I just made a pot of coffee for the first time in over a week. It is a nice new taste of normalcy.

John: The very first free ice I saw being given away was about four days ago in a parking lot. A church from Nebraska sent down four semi trailers of ice in 20 pound bags. The give-away was smooth. You just opened up your trunk and they threw in a bag. Very quick.
That has been the ONLY charity I have seen so far. I assume the Red Cross and Salvation Army are in areas harder hit.
Still only 50% of Cape Coral has electricity, so I know I am lucky.
Kevin, happy to hear most stuff is ok. How is the neighborhood doing?

My neighborhood is doing very well, all things considered, and compared to others nearby.
When we bought this house we were looking for something storm resistant. This one has a low-pitched roof, few/small windows, and is up on an elevated lot. This, plus the 200 Amp main service panel were all considerations. We chose well.
This is what the street looked like the morning after the storm. You can see how high my lot is graded compared to the rest of the street.
It was not very bad at all.
A few days later, and everyone had piled up their debris for pick-up. It actually looked worse.
You can see in the above image, this house has already received the badly needed temporary tarp roof.
I probably should not have ventured outside to take photographs during a category IV Hurricane, but I am a photographer at heart.
The dead birds were removed from my yard today. I have never seen dead animals following a storm before. I guess that is a difference from Category III to Category IV. All of Cape Coral was littlered with dead birds.
During the storm this egret was really struggling. I hope he made it. He really gave it all the effort he had to give.
I took these picture while we were in the eye of the storm.
The eye of the storm is nothing like they make it look in movies. It is much more calm than the bands, but it is not blue skies and paradise. It is cold, windy, and the low pressure makes it hard to breathe. There was no rain, but winds were still at least 30 MPH sustained.
This is the debris pile in front of my house.
It is not as bad as it looks. Most of the black plastic bags are filled with the moist and musty cardboard boxes from my storage locker. Almost none of that debris is from my house. It just landed in my yard. Hurricane rules are that if it lands in your yard, you need to clean it up. Don't go looking for the house it came off of.
My beloved Royal Poinciana was nearly stripped of all of its foliage.
I really hope it comes back. This tree is almost twenty years old.
The loss of my mature Mango Tree was the worst part for me. That tree made the most sinfully delicious fruit. The new Zill Hybrid Mango survived, but it is a few years from fruit production.
The roof damage to my house was no where near as bad as most other houses nearby.
I patched the roof with rolled roofing material and Garner's Wet-Or-Dry. This is the same temporary repair I made after Hurricane Charley. It worked well then, so I am hoping for the same results this time.
The house across thew street was holding up really well, but then the worst of the storm kicked in as the eye wall passed for the second time.
It ended up losing some siding, and there was some fence damage. The roof was still intact.
The clean-up at my house is done.
Things look a lot better a few days after the storm.
The patches on my roof make it look kind of like a Fine Scale Miniatures model! If I would have left all the debris around, I could be living in a G. Selios world.
As I have said before, I sure do know how lucky we were. Not even 1/2 mile from here in one of the older neighborhoods (built in the 1970s), everything was destroyed and the residents lost everything.

Ed, I saw the pics of the Atlantic you posted in WPF. Sweet little engine! I've always liked Atlantics, but sadly won't be ending up with one right now. Money going elsewhere right now.
Speaking of which, I'm going to look at a newer car for my wife tomorrow. She's in a 2017 Cruze hatchback that we bought new in November of that year that has been pretty good to us. Annoyingly though, she started wanting a bigger vehicle again about a year ago. Even more annoyingly, I can understand that desire. There have been several times where it's simpy been too small. Going to miss the fuel mileage though! However, now with our youngest only playing club soccer in the fall (in high school now, H.S. girls play in spring) we are driving a lot less. Looking at a 2021 Blazer. We were very particular on what we wanted if we were trading away a perfectly good car and have been willing to wait to find the right one, which is good as I really started actively looking about February of this year. Finally found one that has everything we wanted and wasn't totally out of whack price wise. Fingers crossed it works out.

This time of year, we have to make our obligated trips with the grandchildren that live about 90 miles away to the pumpkin patches.
These corn mazes are near Omaha. I don't like these. The corn is usually seven or eight feet tall, and I feel a little claustrophobic when I'm in the middle of these things. The artistic part of these mazes is normally lost on the ground, since you can't see what these look like.

Today will be my first day back at work since things went "normal" in the store.
I worked six days in a row immediately after the hurricane. That took a stressful beating on me. Hopefully everything will be closer to typical today.
The insurance representative called today to make contact. We are low on the priority list (I expected that), so it will be a couple of weeks before we see anyone.

We had cedar shingles on our roof during Alicia , if we had not made some quick repairs before the storm the whole roof would have peeled off. We instead only had a few leaks.
The Eye of Alicia came right over our house as well, it was one of the lowest recorded barometric pressures recorded at the time.
Main thing about a hurricane is the sound of the wind never quits and you remeber that sound forever. Alcia was a cat 3 storm.
NOt much else going on in area, we are uner drought here, it has not rained in a long time.

Got some Zicam after I picked up Judy from work last night. I'm not that concerned about me but this Sucks as we're supposed to meet Judy's Sister and my Brother-in-law up at her Mom's in Wisconsin, for the better part of the week starting Thursday. She had surgery a couple months ago and hasn't been getting around very well and needs our help up there. Things she hasn't been able to do for a while and other things that need to get done before Winter. Certainly need to start feeling better quickly here
Could use what rain MLC doesn't take from you David as we've been in a drought here all summer long. Seen the pond at the gravel pit was completely dried up yesterday and the lakes are low.

Well, ...So get this! Judy's a house keeping supervisor and has a management supervisor above her that just adores Judy but is on vacation. The little assistant super in her 20's took her place while she's gone and decided to go on some kind of power trip.
Think I got that all straight but have a hard time keeping track of that soap opera down there. I call it (As the Hotel Room Turns)
The last two days the hotel has been booking out all the rooms. All the girls have been over-worked and stressed-out and then in the meantime, two temps walked off the job. Even though Judy helps out all day when it's like that, the girls were just too overloaded and didn't get all their rooms done even though they all stayed two hours late. There was just a few rooms left.
So this little two of a year old they just made a temporary supervisor decided to talk some smack to Judy about the dropped rooms. OH THAT DIDN'T FLY!!! Next thing you know before she knew what hit her, Lil' Miss Toddler girl was sitting in the GM's office with Judy and two of her staff with seniority.
From what I understand, the GM just loves Judy and thinks the world of her as well. I guess the assistant supervisor's face was beat red with anger and frustration when the meeting was over.
Judy said to me at home later. Try to be a big girl with me little girl, ...I'll sit you down at the office in the big girls chair
Never a dull moment with the stories at the end of day around here And the moral of the story, Respect for your elders

Dianne and I went on another colour tour on Monday. We passed over the tracks for the South Simcoe Railway but that was all that we saw railroad wise. However, the colours were spectacular! They are the best we have see in several years! Unfortunately I didn't stop to take any pictures. Sorry.
