I took a nice Lady I know up to Gannett Hill Park (Ontario County Park) today. We didn't walk too far as she had a very sore toe (ingrown toenail that she got cut back yesterday), but we did have a nice ride, a short hike and enjoyed the view for the "Jump Off". The hillside forms an almost verticle cliff at the edge. We walked along the trail for a short distance but she was getting some vertigo so we came back to where she felt safe.
Anyway included are a few photos I took of the valley. It was a very clear day and so we could see almost all the way to near Rochester, NY for that spot (over 35 miles)... Enjoy!
If you look closely just right of center you see a V in the hill lines that is lightly filled in between the hillsides. That is a ridge just South of Pittsford NY... 35 miles from where we were standing!
In the center of the photo you see a little line across. That is a two lane highway.....

Ok.... I love using very high resolulion Pro quality cameras.... ;) Here is a very small area of what I mentioned in the last post. This is the little notch in the hills. You can see the ridge between the hills. That is the ridge just south of Rochester (Pittsford) NY. 35 miles away from where we were standing.... (Grin!)

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
We went for a colour drive today. The colours have started to change but there was still a lot of green. We will go again next week, weather permitting.
We saw a very unusual railway on our travels. It was the marine railway at Big Chute near Port Severn, Ontario, which uis part of the Trent Severn lock system. It is one of only two marine railways still in operation in North America:
It had shut down for the day so we didn't get to see it in action. The drive along Big Chute Road to get to the railway is really beautiful, and the speed limit is low enough that you can enjoy the scenery.

Reminds me of the inclined plane railways, some in Pennsylvania, that raised railway cars in a similar fashion.

I have a couple of suggestions: When you are taking a selfie, remember to look at the camera lens and not the computer screen. That makes the pose look much more friendly. Also, don't forget to smile. If I don't think to smile when I am taking a selfie, my consternation about just getting my phone to do what I want usually results in me frowning.

Using a different photo hosting solution. The host that I use for my web site is http:// not https:// least wise unless I pay alot more. So I am looking at software that handles things differently and does us https://
So, I only had three pictures there while doing the test.
Animals and other photos come from google and so are not mine anyway.

Only the second time I've seen ya, I think you were wearing your Kasaya or Civara robe, leaning on the railing outside of the Monastery doors quite a few years ago. A bit younger you were, but so was I back then...

Finally finished crawling around on the floor and I'm glad.
The plywood looks rotten in this picture but it's not. The primer for the quick level RS turns the wood darker.
Drilled masonry holes through the gypcrete 6" on center for screws which exceeds the 8" maximum fastener spacing code.
That self leveling floor crete seeks the lowest point, even screw holes. I forgot that I probed for a joist that wasn't there with a screw over by the closet and the plank floor. I didn't plug them with caulk, so the floor crete sunk 1/8" in the channels.....Oops! ...
No matter no matter! It just caused me a bit more skim coating is all.
Getting too old for these types of jobs as I'm quite tired today. Three 4 1/2 - 5 hour days and I feel like I've worked a week
Glad I got four days off and Friday, Saturday with Judy. I wonder what she has up her sleeve, now that I have some more OPEC CIRCUS money?

News from Kevin is not cheerful.
He is on one of the few streets that has not had power restored. Many of the homeowners are worried about crime and looting, especially in the near-total darkness. STILL no official has made any appearance to offer information or assistance.
He says the odor is awful as many residents have thrown out food that is rotting plus many dead animal carcassas around and just today, nasty sewage has been backing up and spilling out on streets and in houses. His wife is having a terrible time dealing with the stench.
This is the kind of nastyness people have to deal with long after the "news cycle" has left them behind and moved on to other "pertinent" topics. Kevin looked over many of the items from the storage unit and anything wood, paper or the leas bit porous is ruined. All the structures from previous layouts have been destroyed.
He is hearing that it may take a month or more before telephone and internet service may be restored.
What a mess!
Let's hope he has better news soon

During the aftermath of Katrina I remember some of these complications heard from Family.
Certainly doesn't suck any less what our good friend Kevin, his Wife and Family is going through. Hopeful they get their power back and things start improving for them sooner then projected.

I realize I rarely post on the "Diner" but I have a suggestion for you.......
Would it be appropriate for you to start a separate thread on Kevin's situation? That way, non-regular participants in the Diner would be more easily able to keep up with his progress. Kevin has been a major "force" in the Forum for some time, and he needs to know we are all rooting for him and wishing him the best.
For those of you that have never experienced hurricanes/tornadoes/floods, you might find it difficult to imagine what Kevin and his family/friends are going through.

Good morning from the Sunny Pacific Rim.
The weather guy on the tube just said we have had 1/20th of our normal Percipatation this Summer. I watered all our Rodos yesterday as they were looking grim. I rarely ever water anything.
We were driving home yesterday along a little used backroad and came across another beautiful deer lying in the middle of the road. We got out and it was still alive and had no visible injuries. The wife started palpating it and said it had internal bleeding. We sat with it and the wife was about to call the RCMP to come put it down and it passed away as she was getting out her phone. We dragged it off the road into the edge of the forest where the local wildlife will make short work of it. It kind of puts a damper on the day.
Sorry to hear Kevin is having a tough time. I am uncomfortable at the thought of living in a place where you rely on others to survive. Water, power, food, and everything else you need to live, leave you at the mercy of others in the borg cube. Worse case for me would be to start cutting down trees to build a new house. With Kevin's wife not doing well, I wonder if he can get her on a plane to Seattle to stay with their daughter. I think his wife also had health issues.
I bought my first stock when I was in grade nine, my Dad had to open a trading account for me as I was too young to open my own. Sitting here this morning watching oil on my computer screens just makes me chuckle. The world has a ring through its nose. Whether you buy it as a consumer to fill your tank or sell it as a producer, it is the free market at work, and watching the dance just makes you shake your head and/or roll your eyes.
My son is heading over to Vancouver Island for a meeting with the Provincial Government, he has been offered a really good position and is going to interview them. Yep, you heard me right, he will find out how much control he will be given to do his job and if he does not agree with the parameters he will decline the position. He will pick up my daughter on the way home from the University and bring her home for Thanksgiving weekend.
The wife is at a dog show for the next four days, so I'll have another cup out on the patio and take the remaining two mutts on a scoot. The old one is 13 but can still knock off the 7km loop with a smile on her face.

Just got back from a doctor appt. Now seems like a good time for a short after lunch nap.
Harvest is underway. When you run into this on a county road, you put your truck in park and wait. This is far more important than you needing to drive along the road.
The harvest will be late and spread out in our area. Many of the fields were hailed out in June and some were replanted. Those will not be harvested for a while yet.

Getting stuck behind farm equipment never bothers me, but there is always some idiot that has moved into the area or is visiting a local winery in the farm belt and has a meltdown.
On the Uncles farm in Saskatchewan, he has millions of dollars in mostly John Deere Equipment, it blows my mind the investment he has made. He helps with the harvest on neighbouring farms to help pay for it all.
My son keeps phoning me, he is on the ferry and is wanting to pick my brain. I just made a massive plate of bacon and eggs with fresh tomatoes just picked and freshly grated cheese. I am outa of here before the phone rings again.

The worst is behind us. We were VERY lucky. My neighborhood is better off than probably 90% of Lee County, and I am better off than 90% of my neighborhood. All the upgrades to this old house really proved worthwhile.
