Ed.  My father was also on the beach at Anzio.  Must have been a day trip.  He spent a little time near Venice as well.

Good very wet and windy afternoon from the soggy West coast.

The wife and I just got back from a 7.6km romp through the forest in the torrential rain and 70km winds with our four mutts. They are now sleeping it off in the kitchen family room with the dehumidifier on.

I had not been out with my buddy for almost three weeks as I had major fatigue and just could not stay awake. Yesterday we got back at it and went for 8km. Made pretty good time considering I have hardly moved for three weeks.

He was so happy to have his daily romp again that he climbed up in my lap at happy hour. Eighty pounds crushing a 65-year-old geezer. Is that a grey hair?

I wasn't feeling great so looked for something on the tube to watch and saw a limited series called "Devil in Ohio". Great I thought, maybe I'll see Ed.Laugh

So I am watching and in the second episode, I realize that this thing was filmed all around where I live more or less. I then remember that a couple of years ago I had stopped to watch a shoot for a while when I was out with the dog, they were shooting in the forest where we walk. I knew it was that show because the woman playing the Doctor came a chatted with me on two of the days I went by and the girl was there as well on the second day. They came over to pat the dog and we talked for quite a while. I thought they were part of the crew, not the actors.Laugh I had kept thinking while watching the first episode the woman looked familiar and then I remembered. Can't remember her name and didn't recognize her as a famous person, but I don't watch much TV.

They were filming her and the girl walking and/or running through the forest. In the show, they come out of the forest into a settlement that is actually 20km from that forest. The wonders of movie making.

Rick, if I ever got to ride in a fighter, straight up from the runway to the service ceiling is the one thing I would want to do. The closest I got was racing for the stars in a Piper 181 when I use to fly.

Bear, I have had quite a few rides in helos back in the day, many in those Hueys. The guy that would take me used to set Hydro towers with his, powerful beast they are. He crashed breaking both his legs and that ended his career and our joyrides. Good times ripping up the valleys North of Vancouver. The bears heard us coming half an hour before we arrived so if we sat down on a mountaintop for a pee break there were no worries.Laugh

We don't get trick-or-treaters as the ROI in time spent going between the homes is not good, it is a loooong walk. The wife used to buy the big Costco boxes of candy and end up eating it all herself and then have to lose five pounds, she stopped doing that a few years ago.Laugh

Speaking of the wife, we have been doing a lot of painting. She is so beautiful I have a hard time getting any painting done, I just can't stop looking at her.Whistling

Jim, I use to go park in Queen Elizabeth Park and read, often at three in the morning if I was heading back to the airport from downtown Vancouver and had time to kill. I would also go for a walk through the gardens in the wee hours, it was so peaceful.

Almost Happy Hour, the idiot box is all I have energy for tonight, but first the guitar for an hour or two so my hands don't seize up.

All the best to all.

David

A bit of Anzio trivia I can't verify:

Who was the first American off the landing craft at the invasion of Anzio?

James Arness, known later as Marshall Dillon on Gunsmoke.  They didn't know how deep the water was, so they sent the biggest guy they had.

I just got the first layer of polyurethane on the workbench top. I stained and weathered it yesterday. It turned out exactly like I wanted.

I will share pictures in WPF next week.

If no one is available to open the November Diner in Italy I could take up the task if there were no objections.

Hi Ed,

I have never been to Italy either, but I'm willing to move the Diner too. You did it last month, and I haven't done it for a couple of months, but I will leave it up to you.

Salute!! Chin chin!!

I'd be glad to have you do the honor, Dave. I was just offering to be a second-string backup if no one else was available for the task.

Thanks and best wishes — Ed

Perhaps I’m biased Brent, but you can’t really go past the sound of the “Huey Whop”!!

Helicopters have always amazed me, and I am quite jealous that you actually get to work on them

To be perfectly honest Dave, fixed wing aircraft structural repair is my forte. Coming up with the appropriate repair scheme, fabricating, if necessary, and then installing the repair parts, and seeing the aircraft fly again, gives me the greatest satisfaction.

A company I worked for carried out the refurbishment programme for the RNZAF Hueys, and I was seconded to that particular section for a while. Later on, I was engaged to carry out a structural repair on a civilianised Huey, and things developed from there. I have more than enough experience on 6 different types of helicopters to satisfy the maintenance licence requirements, but have never really been that enthused to sit the exams. I guess I’m not “wired” properly to maintain them full time, I just enjoy dabbling.

Last year stuffed peppers for dinner and ditto again tonight as they were horrifyingly tastyWhistling

I can imagine keeping aircraft safe to fly must be one of the most rewarding jobs there is Bear.  Would like to have a glimpse of your sense of accomplishment at the end of the dayYes

You asked if anyone has any objection to you hosting the diner in Italy this month Ed?  Absolutely no objections from this neck of the woods as your always the Host With the MostSmile

Have a great Halloween gentlemanWink

Good morning, diners.  Happy Halloween, Flo, and I'll have bacon and eggs, please.

David, I got my flu shot last week.  Normally I don't even feel the flu shot, but this year, for some reason, my arm actually hurt more than the second covid booster I got earlier this year.  Maybe I'm getting old?

Bear, I've never ridden in a helicopter.  It's something I always thought I would enjoy, but the opportunity never came up.  There are helicopter rides at some of the national parks, but I've never wanted to pay for the expensive ride.

TF, those cookies look great, and so does your last year's stuffed peppers.

I'm looking forward to seeing the work.  I'm sure it will turn out great.

Have a good last day in the October diner, everyone.  I'm looking forward to Italy.  I'd really like to take a week to get there on an ocean liner, but I guess we'll fly to save time.

I've been to Italy twice, long ago in 1970 as a Eurailpass hippie and then a few years back to visit my daughter who was studying in Florence.  I've never been to Rome, though.

I've been looking for my pictures for weeks, but can't find them.  I'll keep trying.

A wonderful Fall afternoon to everyone (except that guy down under.  To him a fine Spring day!)

I enjoyed the Helicopter stuff earlier!  Last Spring in connection with something called "One Great Hour of Sharing" at my church.  I bid on a Helicopter Ride (donated by a member who owns and operates a helicopter business).  The year before, I got out bid at the last second.  The value of the half hour ride for 2 people is $250.  This time the bid was standing at $215, so I upped it to $230 but waited until there was only 8 seconds let to hit send....  Heh, heh....  This time I won it.

Ever since that, I have been trying to get the ride scheduled. A lady I am friends with will share the ride.  She is my age and physically handicapped.  Has to walk using a walker or a 4 footted cane.  Was told, not a problem!  They have gotten people using wheelchairs into the copter many times.  So we set a date for it.  2 days before that time, I get an email from the owner.  Can't do it as a student pilot (He is an instructor) crashed the copter on his first solo run!  Two months later he says we are good to go!  Make a date...  Drive all the way to the ladies house the other side of Rochester, NY.  Pull into her driveway, and get a text!  He had a flight earlier that day and something went wrong with some system on the copter.  Had to cancel!  I checked with him a few days later and he found the problem, but has to order a whole new system to be safe to fly.  Has no idea when it up and safe to fly again!!!! (sigh!)

Oh well, so much for "Fall Foliage" run.

Here is a picture of a helicopter my son did some of the programming for, it was the first fly by wire helicopter. This was a test flight and the pilots exceeded the the maximum air speed specified by the manufacturer. No fault in the electrical systems embedded programming.

Good Afternoon,

I have been in a helicopter once and that was in 2019. We went on a half hour ride to view Victoria Falls. It was a fairly large one, a Bell Jet Ranger I think. Got sone great views of the falls.

Italy sounds interesting. Have been there once, in 1988. We took a train from Menton which is in France just a few miles from the Italian border. After an hour or so the train stopped in clearing between tunnels. We sat for a couple of hours with no info from the train crew. It was on a curve and I could see they coupled in a new loco. The train started with no warning. We got to Pisa where our car was supposed to be attached to the train to Florence. Some railway works were looking at our car and a passenger started talking to them and was told the car was going straight to Rome for repairs. All passengers got off with luggage being passed out windows. In less than 5 minutes the train left for Rome. We did make it to Florence. We took a train from there to Venice. It seems in Italy departure times are merely a suggestion.

Time to toss peanuts to the Blue Jays.

Good evening.

Had to take two of our grandchildren to a Halloween Party.   The scary outfits were great.

Back to make dinner.    Dinner

TF  Dinner is served.  I've saved as much as you like. Smile  As for dessert, Yoghurt Surprise has been requested.  Yeah  (There is a Halloween Twist to it.)

Helicopters.   Never been in one.  Would like to.   My daughter, Julia has been in one when she was in Brooklyn, New York on charity work.   She loved it.

As for charity work,  she should have gone to India, but because of warring factions there at the time she went to Tanzania to help build a school for children.   Throughout all her work she has kept in touch with the families and children she has helped.  We are so proud of her.

I flew in a helicopter once.  It was a sightseeing trip in Hawaii.  Absolutely magnificent out over an old volcano and the Pacific cliffs.  The pilot pointed out where parts of Jurassic Park were filmed.

At an air show in Florida, they had a few helicopters and us civilians got to climb in.  These were anti-submarine helicopters, so it was interesting to see stuff for sub hunting on board.

Color From the Dome by Don Kalkman, on Flickr

I've always been fascinated by the Huey (Bell UH-1). Those things made their first flight only two months after I was born, 66 years ago! I've seen them land and take off up close but never got to ride one.

Ground Resonance. It's a thing:

Everyone have an enjoyable last October night in the Diner.

Cool Bud Dome with the Fall leaves Ed.  Judy and I got to ride in an Amtrak Dome car on the way to Chicago once.

This year's stuffed Jack-Ol'-Lanterns were yellow as they didn't have any orange ones.

I'll go along with Kevin, MLC and Lion that I'm not too keen on helicopters either.

At least if a plane fails you have a chance to switch into glide and look for a place to land.  Helicopter breaks and the thing just falls out of the sky I sapposeTongue Tied

Only time I rode in one was flown by a Korean or Vietnam Vet at Paul Bunyan Land when I was a little kid.  That was one crazy pilot I'll tell ya! Pirate  It was one heck of a fun scary ride but that was enough for meLaugh
