What would I use to plug a hole. ?  EZ.. me.. personally I used the Micro Krystal Klear.  Wipes off ez.. and / or with water.. dries clear.  Other than that.. I haven't the foggiest.  Perhaps you don't want to drive down to the LHS and buy a $3 bottle of it.  Perhaps they don't even have it.. and its a wasted trip.  But then again .. using Elmer's white isn't far from my mind... I'm only thinking using something like this.. is not that damaging.  Then you can always try something else.  Putty seems to 'Final'.  Good luck.~

Hmmm

the diner near the bottom of page one, I have to do something about that.

Now that I have over a 1000 posts it is my responsibility now to see this thread keeps going, you see. I have joined hte ranks of the post-watchers, LOL. I don't how I got to that many I don't post every day, and have sometimes gone months without a single post {some people here would probably want to see me take more vacations from posting LOL}

See the DR tomorrow about my back. only 5 mins of doing anything and I am in agony and have to sit or laydown. Of course the muscle relaxers see to it that I spend some time in bed sleeping. THE DR. may not have the MRI results yet, but I have to see him. SOmething is NOT RIGHT for sure!

well have a good evening gents,

Sawyer- I'm with keith on the Elmers. If it doesn't work at least it can be repworked fairly  easy. I don't however see any way out of at least spot painting the top of whatever you use. Oh, or were you referring to the large amount you'd have todo if you used putty.

G- Congrats on the big 1000! Nope, don't want to see you take longer vacations.

Packer
What would be the best way to plug holes left from removing parts on a model? I have a factory-painted Atlas WV caboose that was missing some parts for the roof walkway (a loop grab for the ladder top, and a braket for the end of the walkway) so I decided to modernize it by taking the ladders and roofwalk off (atlas doesn't have these parts, and I have little money anyways).

For little holes like that I use RoseArt modeling clay (I get mine at Wal-Mart). It goes in easily, won't dry up and fall out and I can paint right over it. Only problem is that it never dries out. That's usually not a problem in a small space like a little hole left from a grab. Nice thing is it doesn't cost much. There are 4 1x1x4 inch bars in one package. I use it for plugging holes, doing shortcuts in body work and for adding weight to freight cars when it's not advisable to add lead to them. Usually I pack it the load (transformer, containers, etc).

I got emails today telling me that my recently ordered merchandise is on the way. The two Bachmann covered hoppers are coming from Extreme Hobbies in Kalamazoo Michigan, the three Bachmann tank cars are coming from Coolest Toys on Earth in Milford Ohio. The 50 pack of couplers is on it's way from Tri-County Inc. in Richardson Texas and the Bachmann Great Northern GP30 (DCC of course) is on it's way from Trains and Lanes Hobbies in Easton Pennsylvania. I'll be getting daily email updates until all the merchandise has arrived.

Now, we'll see what item gets here first.I'm thinking the GP30 as it has a 1/2 day head start.

 Good evening,

VINCENT: I'd go with the Squadron putty myself. I've never had a problem with it eating paint, and even if it did...a little weathering can help to camouflage THAT.Mischief  In the past I used the green stuff, but got a tube of the white and like it better. Not sure why, it just seems to w**k easier. Just my half-a-cent of opinion...yours and your results, may vary!

THAT said, I like JEFF's idea with the modeling clay. Think I'll have to get some.

Welp, the big track meet was postponed due to the threat of severe weather. Naturally, I didn't find this out until I got there...Banged Head SoapBox At least I'll get mileage to take the edge off the wasted gas. I met a couple who had driven from Mt. Pleasant to see their kid run. They didn't know either.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I can either do some MRR stuff, or the w**k stuff I "should" do (so I don't have to deal with it Thursday). The joys of an irregularly irregular schedule. I could also tackle some "Hazel duties" around the house, or just be a vegetative lump.

I've got a Johnson County Board of Supervisors meeting tomorrow evening...the flood damaged, historic Sutliff Bridge is again the topic of discussion. Allegedly, the final decision will be made: rebuild in-kind, repair with a "modern" replacement span, or scrap it and use the balance of the FEMA money for "other projects throughout the county." A good time will be had by some. Not so good by others. I'm betting scrapping will be the choice. Give a bunch of politicians a pot of money...watch 'em drool and "find" projects for it!SoapBox

Awwwwwwwwwww heck. I'll do the "responsible thing" and do some w**k stuff this evening.

*sigh* dontcha just hate being a "mature, responsible adult" some days??

Evenon folks!

Flo I'll have a tuna sub (yep, with lots of mercury), American cheese, lettuce, onions, some dill pickles and extra Mayonaise.  Oh, and a cup of decafe to go along with THAT.

Went over to the high school to help the 2 guys doing sound for the High School musical a bit of help setting up.  Knowing that 1/3 of the $1700 Sennhiesser radio units don't work, I took my 2 Shure radio unit over for them to use.  They should have a dozen or so units that will work for them.  Showed the path through the 2 boards to get everything running for them.  Neither of them has used a digital board before.  They are graduates of the Community College Audio program so they should do fine once they used to the equipment.

Anyway, I am on call if needed for the next couple of days.......  I will try to get over to see the show for the Sunday Matinee.  I can then rescue all my equipment as soon as they are done.

Catch you in a bit!

Evenin all, just checking in for now.  I've got the drunk chicken on the grill (should be ready to come off in another 15 or so minutes).  The taters and eggs are boiling for the tater salad, and the macaroni is getting ready to be cheesed.  I accomplished what I wanted to do today which was cut the back yard (2.75 acres).  It wasn't horrible since the wind was blowing a little, but I was still pretty warm when I got done.  I also got the charcoal pencils run over the SD40-2 and was able to take some pictures of it.  Here they are, comments, critiques, or other are welcome.

And one of the top:

I know that its not on par with either Jeff, or Robby, but I figured I'd give it the "used, not abused" look and just make it dirty, not rusty.

Oh well, that's it for now, gotta go get ready to pull chicken off the grill, get tater salad going and cheese some macaroni.  I'll bring left-overs in here for y'all if I can.

Didn't do to much today.   Tomorrow I gotta cut some grass, and then the rain comes.  I'm off tomorrow, and I hope to get some train hunting in.

Bama.......Not bad.   Plus CSX does have some clean engines (note to self).  I took these last year.

Thanks for the congrats on the videos everyone! I'm real tired though (drove the last hour and a half of our drive home) but we had a great day in Charleston. I got an AJ Hawk rookie card, new shark-tooth necklace, and a new pair of sunglasses.

Robby, thanks man! and nice CSX pics; gotta keep that in mind myself; not every loco is seriously dirtied up.

Todd, yeah. I use it for paint and weathering handles for shells. absorbs the flat coat so it doesn't get messed up. What do you mean in your second post? If you're referring to the ground work the paint should have it covered pretty good, then the ground cover adds another, and the lichen just adds in another layer of depth.

Ulrich, thanks, can do!

Keith, thanks. that's what I like having the tutorials for; people learning my techniques and maybe using them or adapting them. or just getting a kick out of it.

Well have a good one folks, I'm tired out lol. And I have a neighbor's yard to mow tomorrow.

Good evening all: The weather held for another day, so Job1 was to clean the woodstove chimney. Looks like we are in for a top section replacement sometime this summer. THAT will leave a mark, as they say. The top section is very rusted - I'm doubting the quality of the stainless steel it was supposed to have been made from. Rust and grunge have left their mark on the roof shingles, that's for sure. The mail was late arriving, but it did have the package from the LHS I'd been expecting.Thumbs Up

Ulrich: That loco was at the Robert's Bank coal terminal outside Vancouver, and as I understand it over-ran a de-rail. Dick sent me an email with the pics. See the end of this post for another view! Here's how the photos were headed: Never try to run a engine thru a coal dumper.  Canadian National 8017 got jammed into the coal hopper Dumper 31 at the Roberts Bank Bulk Terminal in  Vancouver . Looks like it went past the derail. Probably went in a lot easier than coming out!

Sawyer: Great tutorial man! I admire your honesty with the glitches - like blowing away the green ground foam that came out too thick from the container - great save! Yeah!! The brown ground cover for the forest base - love it! I use what I call "Wood Detrius" - and it's free. The dust stuff from the floor of the wood shed, log basket, etc. Sifted to get a more or less even size, and sterilized on a baking sheet in the oven if you're worried about bug eggs or small creeping things. (hey, if it toasts a little, no prob. - just don't have it catch fire!) Cool and store. A life-time supply from a season's fire wood Cool  When it's on the N Scale forest floor it's dead leaves. We have moss and such under the trees, and lots of rocks under THAT here, sort of a temperate climate rain forest really. Makes for an interesting floor, and very forgiving to model.

Keith:

some sort of piping coming out fo the ground.. going up to the platform.. might be a start. .....but check all the pics .. I'm sure you'll find some idea's.  Everything including shelving, pipes.. various.. 'lay around' stuff.
Thanks a million! I've got that bookmarked. I've bought from franko before - the harbour clutter. It's a one piece casting (I was hoping for some separation - didn't read too carefully I guess) - and when I've got the thing painted up it will land in some house's front yard! My harbour scene is full already! Anyway, I know where I am with his stuff - I especially like the dust collectors , roof top AC units and the roof top duct work. For the service stand details...there's a few things that could be useful indeed.Thumbs Up

Chris:

One "oh crap!" wipes out 100 "atta-boy's."
Ain't THAT the truth!
Two words Pal: DON'T SNEEZE!
...Oh, I didn't sneeze, just joggled my hand holding the plastic they were sitting on.right after taking the photo! Now I've ½ as many as I started with. I thought that the track joiner material might be magnetic, and I'd get them back, but Mr. Murphy paid a visit!  I'm wondering if they are going to be visible at all on the ballast under the service stand. I may have to do a bunch of them and pile them "ready for collection" (the MT is a tidy RR) so they can be seen!
You want I should dig-up THAT article with the bins?
Yes please, if it's not too much trouble...and thanks for the kind words.

Vincent:

Anyone got anything else to try before I attempt the putty?
There are a couple of things I'd try. One is epoxy putty Jeff was talking about the other day for making his vehicle gaskets.(I haven't read on from your post to see if he answered yet)  I use the El Cheepo stuff as I don't need the added quality he does for that application. Second of all, many years ago I bought a small quantity of "Water Putty" and am still using it (as recently as doing the platform for that station the other day) for filling seams, cracks and holes. Pollyfilla could be made to work, I expect, or anything like that which would dry hard and be sandable; however I'd prefer the epoxy really as it in't porous, a nd so the paint would go on without a change of colour from the surrounding model parts.

Bamma:  I like the used but not abused approach too. Kinda what Ulrich has done with his BR loco.

Time for bed again - we were late last night, so an earlier night would be welcome. So, especially thinking of galaxy's situation, I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Good evening all!

Just stopping in for a quick pit stop on the way to the Satin Slopes!

Thank you all for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers!  I passed my verbals, the AC Line Road Foreman is a really cool guy!  Now onto the AC Line itself!

Galaxy- I hope your back feels better, and the Doctor finds what's ailling you.

Jeff- Part of me is in SHOCK, and the other is like "Cool!" about the weathering on the hopper!  Keep it coming!  Sorry about the horn hook couplers, THAT is what has been on ALL my stuff...  Some of my conversions haven't been very successful, so I left it alone, figuring you would be able to handle it better than I!

Vincent (IIRC)- I would use Super Glue with their "Filler" formula added to it, it has worked for me when I was working for Marriott, and had to "repair" some plastic parts for use in a guest room (fancy way of saying "Hotel Room").  The filler part causes the super glue to get "thicker", which helps fill gaps and holes, and a light sanding and some paint will mask it nicely!

Thanks for the help with the "gear lube", I have to write them down...  And about the DVD software, I found a few in which my computer said were trustworthy.  Now I am able to put my movies on my iPod, which will help for me to "destress" while on break at work!

Adieu, au revoir! (hope the spelling is right?)

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Flo just a cup of decafe to help me unwind...

Sam, Congrats! Thumbs UpThumbs UpBow  Knew you would be fine!

John THAT is quite a photo of the loco precariously tilted.  I liked the one with the guy holding it up though......Whistling

I almost finished one of the Engine house walls tonight.  Just a couple more 2x6s to put in place.  Tomorrow I hope to get the windows cut out and the studs glued in place on the other side wall.  Then they will get a paint job and glued together.  May be able to get THAT far before Deacons tomorrow night.

Hope all of you had a great day.

Good evening. Cheese burger and fries please. Add some bllue cheese. I'm not fond of the stuff but lately I've had it and mixed in with other things is not too bad. (The restaurant has a fantastic Blue Cheese pizza. sounds bad but is real good even if you don't like blue cheese.)

Sawyer, I was refering to the putty on the loco. I thought you didn't really want to use it because it may get around the area and would require you to paint more of the top than if you could just fill the holes. Th glue also sounds good. You may get away with just a tibble of paint right on the spot or sme powder to camolage it.

Joe- good luck on the "date"

Sam- Glad to hear you passed!!

Windows are open and the wind is blowing good. I'm gonna sleep so well I may not get up tomorrow at all. I hope Ulrich can do the same.

Prayers for those in need.

Good Evening... a tall RBF please 'n thank-you...

Welp, instead of doing w**k stuff, or MRR stuff, or even just being a lump of non-productive human vegetative matter...I've been tracking storms all night! The most evil line of storms ran a line pretty much from Cedar Rapids to Dubuque...totally missing us (and Iowa City, where the track meet woulda been). Alburnett had a close-call as a large swirly thing was seen in their neck of the woods. We had one little tiny storm pop up near Tipton, and roll on by with only a rumble or two of thunder. The "bigee" for us...just rolled by a half-hour ago. They paged everybody out for storm watch, but other than one gust of wind, I wouldn't even rate at being much over 30 mph...not much to it. Rerun is happy again, the fuzzy lad really, really HATES thunderstorms. He's an absolute bad-a   when it comes to little girls on tricycles...but get a little thunder, and he's a helpless little puppy again. Smile,Wink, & Grin

DER JOHN: When I dig up THAT article, I'll PM ya for your e-mail. I just remembered, I've also got an article about the engine service area at CNW's Butler Yard (Wisconsin). I'll scan it also...it might even be in the same binder. I think the guy made the bins out of solid blocks (in HO scale). Simplicity itself.

SAM: Hey, congrats on passing the verbals!Thumbs Up

Good Morning, suppose to rain with thunderstorms off and on all day today, so who knows what I'll end up doing.

I forgot to mention the other day, that last week things really went uphill for my grandson. So well in fact that Monday he went home. He has to see the doc again in a month, I think, or was it two weeks, anyway for another ultra sound to check the progress of the hopefully continued shrinkage of the cyst. Sounds really good for him, I hope it continues. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.

Have a Great Day!!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the egg on a muffin and a cup of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug if you please.  I'll go sit in the front booth and watch the switcher doin' it's thing....

Todd, so glad to hear that the grandson is home and healing up well!  I worry about the psychological trauma of having been through such a terrible thing.  I hope THAT will heal as well.

Speaking of trauma.....  Got the truck back yesterday to the tune of close to $600.  They replaced the Light Switch and the clock unit which were both fried.  Also unhooked the electric brake unit.  Still use the truck now and then (all of about 800 miles last year) so I guess it is the cost of having the old girl.  It is 8 years old and has all of 62,000 miles on it.  I sent out an email to the School last night.  They still haven't paid me for a load of equipment I sold to them fro the business.  Gave them a deal as well to support the music program.  They got it for about half street value of the stuff (microphones, stands, speakers, etc.).  They are now 90 days overdue.

It is a dark, gloomy day here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 73°F with the threat of thunderboomers this afternoon and tonight.  Need to go shopping so I probably should get THAT done ASAP.

Catch you all later!

Thanks for all well wishes on my back problem. The Dr called me this AM to tell me that the MRI showed arthritis which we knew was tehre from xrays. IT also showed scarred tissue of the muscles from tearing around the back and that perhaps any stimulation { massage, TENS unit, Excersize, heat} may be agrivating it.

He is putting me on Percocet and and Oxycontin another controlled substance as well as continuing the muscle relaxer.

AL I know is doing anything that isn't sitting down or laying down for more than five minutes and I am in agony. I can't even do basic household chores anymore.

Uncovered the winter insulation from the A/C as at 10 am it was already 72* outside, and it's damp since it rained so much. Ah, the pleasures of A/C.

Anybody heard from Jeffrey W yet?

Prayer candle is up for anyone in need, including myself {for once}.

Have a great afternoon guys!

Good morning~  "Coffee .. and keep em comin"

Yeah Todd.. I was wondering.. I always hate to ask.. so thanks for the up-date.

Jeff~?  I know you went to get x rays yesterday.. and / or last week.. but I didn't hear a report from yesterday.

Don't think I not watchin.

Well I woke up this morning at 7:55 AM.  The weather person said.. (Jeanne said).. its gonna be a hot one today.. be sure to open all the windows when you get up"

Well I did.. and the heater came on, turned that off,. so I checked the outside temp gauge.  50 degrees.. yeah.. a bit chilly.  The house seems like it gets there oh.. in 3 minutes.. yikes.. felt awful.

Now.. a few minutes after 9 AM.. and the wind has picked up.  Went for a sunny spring morning to a 'Spring Zephyr'.  Even my husky came in.. I guess she could tell.

What am I talking about?  The Santa Ana Winds.  Often mis-called the Santana Winds but in spanish.. that was the word to desribe them.  Santana means 'Devilish' Winds  and they get HOT.  All of a sudden the wind at 9 AM picks up with furry.. right now.. its still a chilly wind.. but maybe I'll report back when it gets blazen hot.. yeah yeah.. I know.. hot.. well remember .. its a HOT wind.  Kinda creepy.

Jim,  I was laying cork yesterday.. no no~ not to the layout.. I'm not even close, besides I'm still waiting for you to tell me.. what I am forgetting... lol.  But in layers to obtain a multi-level, I've been laying out.. and giving different levels to each parts of the track. That is,  Newest main has highest level, then the old main.. lower.  The the freight line.. aka yard line.. is the lowest.

So Jim,  I know why you moisten or wet the cork... lol. >> IN dry climate where I live.. where single digit humidity is not un-common.. well cork dries out fast.. brittle.. hard to work with.. you can't even uncurl the 1/8 inch roll.. without something happening like cracks.  Learning how much water.. and how to use it. is a nack ... well I can see even soaking cork bed a bit with water for making some turns.

Anyways.. I've got some posting to do elsewhere here .. maybe about building a Steel Mill.  LOL.  In the meantime .. I'm off to go close some windows.. and keep the cook air in now. Bu Bye~

Hey ya'll. Just on taking a break from studying from between classes. I have a test in the next class, and have a good feeling I'll ace this one.

Kieth, Jeff, Chris, John, and Sam; Thank's for the suggestions. I'll try what I have that was suggested (clear parts maker, putty, epoxy, fillers, and superglue) first before I buy something else to try (clay; although my sis may have some).

Chris, what do you mean by work easier? I'm curious as to if it dries faster, is stronger, and easier to work with. I'd have to pick up some paint at the LHS, so it wouldn't hurt to pick-up a tube of the white putty. Don't you just love it when you find out something is canceled, after you get there?

Bama, it looks pretty good to me. The loco itself doesn't look to bad. Guess I'll look for some of their SD40-2s, since I need SD40-2s BADDDD!! (along with C30-7s)

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

 Hi Folks,

just wanted to stick my head in here and join you for a nightcap. I have a sore back from carrying all that stuff up into my son´s flat. Must have been a ton of weight I moved. Now my back is hurting like h*ll. I took a painkiller, but without the expected result. I will go to see my doc about this, tomorrow morning.

Sam - congratulations on passing the verbals. I had no doubt at any time that you would not be making it!

See you all tomorrow!

Sam - I too would like to offer my congratulations on your oral exams. I have been following your postings and know the effort you have put in, and that is what it is all about. When you reach your final goal, you will be able to sit back and take a lot of pride in what you've achieved because you earned it through your own efforts. Best of luck in the next step.

Then  9 Am  60 degree's

now.. 10:45  one hour 45 minutes later.. 80 degrees.. but the house .. is still cold.
